420R issues  (continued)

Followup to my earlier posting on the subject of a wayward 420R
I've changed the serial port jumpers so they are regular RS232 now, changed the PROM jumpers so the machine 'should' boot from the backup .. checked the null modem serial cable pinouts, left it running for 30 minutes just in case that makes a difference (it didn't). Only thing I have noticed is that the green LEDs on my cable tester change from green to red on DSR / DTS / CD the moment I open Hyperterminal or TeraTerm. The colour change appears to be directly related to Hyperterminal & TeraTerm as it doesn't matter whether or not the cable is connected to the 420R. Red LEDs change back to green the moment I shut the terminal application.
Before starting Hyperterminal or TeraTerm I get three greens (TD / RTS / DTR) from the 420R end & four greens from W2K end (RD / CTS / DSR / CD). None of them appear to be in conflict so in the absence of any information to the contrary, I can only assume that the cable isn't causing trouble.
Tried sending 'break' from TeraTerm but seems it doesn't understand, at least not enough to respond.
Tried every terminal emulation available in TeraTerm including the break signal but no response
Would it help if I scrounged up a VT100 dumb terminal someplace ?? I imagine they are connected directly to serial A without any sort of null modem device ?? My idea is that even though I've tried to make sense of the null modem pinout diagrams, I'm somewhat confused after poring over so many postings etc & looking for a simpler way of bypassing any possible problem in that area.
Tried connecting a common or garden variety & known good CRT monitor direct to the PCI videocard & type 6 keyboard / mouse to the relevant socket but still nothing on screen. I've read about Sun monitors possibly being 'different' but put that down to the peculiar proprietory connection on neanderthal Sun sytems. Aren't all monitors with VGA connections equal ?? One peculiarity ... amber / green light on CRT monitors stays amber, but when I try a LCD monitor, the light turns green (still nothing showing on screen) As well as the type 6 keyboard / mouse, I have an interface box that I understood was to adapt the type 6 keyboard to a PC although I can't understand what would be gained by that. Can anyone enlighten me further ??

APPLE HAS A RECALL for this! READ BELOW AND SAVE SOME MONEY!!!!
Anyone with these issues needs to see this link. Apple has a recall going for G4 15" AL PBs because one of the two RAM slots die. Mine has been "fixed" twice under this program. There's a number to call to get started. Be forewarned, the person on the end of that phone is not the sharpest tool in the tool box. I had to show him where the recall was on Apple's site and how to interpret it. He had to keep putting me on hold to check with a Powerbook Expert (his title was only Powerbook Specialist). They send you a nice prepaid DHL 24 hr turn around shipping box. First time was great. Second time it came back covered in sticky. greasy fingerprints and the metal around the case screws has been badly scratched. I'm still waiting for Apple to address this but since they found 3rd party RAM in my PB, this is my punishment. FWIW, if you let it go in the broken state too long, bad things could happen. • Error 100a --- if this issue continues, please contact HP Support

Hi, got HP DV6-1103AX and did a clean form yesterday. The whole recorvery process had no option to create a new partition besides factory partition - one huge 221GB (system boot etc) and one Recovery Partition. Tried on windows disk management and it could only shrink 9GB that is bit pointless. Then I ran Partition Wizard freeware and apparetly it could shrink 9GB as well. This software requires HP notebook to reboot and one page shows 'no reboot device found'. In that case, I had to restart with F11 and do a clean recovery again. Half way, I was told 'Error 100a --- if this issue continues, please contact HP Support'.
Please let me know what I should do to fix this and how to create the additonal partition (150GB or bigger)  besides the factory 2 partitions (C: system boot & D: Recovery)

Thank you. Tried a partition software, can't remember 'Partitiion Magic' or ' Partition Wizard'. It did partition a new hard hard max size 9GB, same result as 'diskmgmt.msc' in Windows. Anyway, the worse problem is after the partition, HP fails to recover the system and gives Error1000a. When HP has such a message, what shall I do next?

  • "Slow typing in Mail" issue continues in Lion

The "Slow typing in Mail" issue continues in Lion. Has anyone found a fix yet?

Well, when typing in MAIL, the letters manifest VERY SLOWLY. I am know ACE typist, and it can't keep up with me. I type even a few characters, and wait for several seconds for my textual desires to appear.
This was well discussed under Snow Leopard, I see.
Restarting the App often helps for several minutes, but no more.

  • FM8p277: Index issues continue...?

I've discovered that when I include character tags in index markers, the markers are sorted incorrectly-- regardless of the page number, they appear at the end of the entry. Thus, I get something like:
    Topic 15, 92, 277, 150
where 150 is the page with the formatted index marker. This is pervasive to the point where even index sub-entries will come before the formatted index marker:
    Topic 15, 92, 277
    SubtopicA 151
    SubtopicB 16
    150
I assume that this is related to the other problems that folks have noted with character tags in index markers. I don't see any recent discussion of this issue-- are others continuing to have similar problems? I'm running FM8 with auto-update, and have the p277 patch. My FM is the version that came with the TCS, though, and I'm wondering if that could affect the efficacy of the patches.
I'd much appreciate any comments, suggestions, info, etc.!
    Best,
    Melinda

Sure! <br /><br />The formatting for the index serves to indicate, for a given topic, the location where the reader will find the main documentation on that topic. So the page(s) that have the most basic and comprehensive information are in boldface, while entries that reference the topic more peripherally are in standard type.<br /><br />For example, I have an index entry "Plot Setup." I have references to that topic on pages 289, 302 and 400, and for each of those the text of the marker just reads:<br /><br />Plot Setup<br /><br />The primary treatment of the topic is on pages 317 to 332, and those markers read:<br /><br /><$startrange>Plot Setup<Emphasis><br /><$endrange>Plot Setup<Emphasis><br /><br />So in the index, it appeared as:<br /><br />Plot Setup 289, 302, 400, 317-332<br /><br />I'm also getting this with single-page markers, so I know it's not caused by the <$startrange> and <$endrange>.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Melinda

  • Graphics corruption issue continues in Mavericks 10.9.1

Bad news: A graphics issue reported for Mavericks 10.9 continues in 10.9.1.  The drop-shadows surrounding some windows have no gradient or translucency, and in some cases,  Finder windows  show colored pixels in place of the content.  My Mac configuration:  MacBook Pro Model ID 6,2 - Mid-2010 15", Std RAM: 4 GB
Here is a screen shot, taken the day that 10.9.1 was released (December 16, 2013)
A workaround that has been posted in these threads [ System Preferences > Energy Saver > Automatic Graphics Switching (off) ] is not acceptable to me, since it reduces battery life significantly.   Also, it is being reported that this workaround works only temporarily, and/or intermittently.
If you are experiencing this issue, please add to this thread.  There were also reports in the Mac press that this might be one of the issues that Apple was working on for 10.9.1, but apparently not.  Here's one article: http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/15/apple-seeds-first-os-x-mavericks-10-9-1-beta-to-de velopers-with-focuses-on-mail-graphics/
Here are two other discussion threads that reported the same issue with 10.9:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24150281#24150281
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24150278#24150278
Let's hope that Apple is monitoring this thread and issues a dot-release quickly, rather than having us wait until 10.9.2.   Apple: please feel welcome to contact me for troubleshooting, if that can help.
    Thank you.

I'm in agreement with Steve H, on this one.  This is in no way, shape, or form a hardware problem.  This problem was non-existent before the upgrade to Mavericks.  I will be submitting another bug report (translation:  complaint) through the feedback page, and will continue to do so until Apple, in some way, acknowledges that this is a problem and that they are, actively, working to resolve it.  It's beyond ridiculous that there is STILL no fix for this.  I don't know if my problems have been as extreme as other users, but this is still a major nuisance.  The specific issues I, continue, to have are:
Shadows around app and finder windows rendering improperly
Dashboard widgets and app icons in the Launchpad are a noisy mess of "static"
App names in the Dock are just "noise" when moused over.
These will always occur when the integrated (Intel) GPU is active.  If any of these symptoms crop up, both known fixes immediately, and only temporarily, resolve it:
Using gfxCardStatus to toggle to the discrete GPU
Disabling "Automatic Graphics Switching" in the Energy Saver preferences
Both of these fixes have the undesirable side affect of defaulting to the discrete GPU which is a greater drain on the battery.  This is a band-aid NOT a solution.
There are a growing number of threads on this problem:

  • Verizon iPhone 4 Battery Draining issue (continued)

This is not a question or help topic but more of an announcement. Here's my story:
I preordered the phone on it's February 3rd date and recieved the phone on February 7th. I did as Apple instructs when you get a new idevice (drain the battery down till it dies then recharge it to 100%.) I did that and began to use it, and keep in mind this was not heavy usage at all. I didn't have any app store apps installed at all, I set all settings in the phone to the best configuration for battery saving (truning off push notifications, turning off location services for apps you do not need, no bluetooth, no VPN, brightness at 33%, ect.) Now I thought the battery was strange as I had made my first phone call on 100% battery and it was a 5 minute call. I kid you not I lost 10% battery from one phone call. I thought that was rediculous so I went into my local verizon store and had it replaced. I did the same as I did last time and let the battery drain till it died and filled it to 100%. Tried the phone out and still had the same issue. I went back in and got my 3rd iphone 4. Did the same steps as before and drained then filled it. Yet again, I still had troubles with 3 phones in a row. I cantacted apple and got in contact with an apple engineer named Andrew. He sent me a file that they created that monitors what all is being used by the battery and monitors background processes and applications. I let that run for 24 hours and sent the battery loggin file back to Andrew. They reviewed the log and gave me a call the next day. They told me they did find some very significant battery draining and advised me to go to the nearest apple store ASAP and have the phone checked out. I drove 2 hours to the nearest store for them to just tell me the phone is fine (yotta yotta yotta) and they did a hard reset and restore on the phone (which I could have done from home on my computer and save the gas they made me waste driving for a total of 4 hours!) I tried contacting Andrew agiain but Andrew did not reply to any email sent to him nor return my calls. I got the point that he didn't want to deal with me anymore so I then decided to go the Verizon route. I called Verizon tech support and was transferred to a teir 2 representative. I told her my story, how many replacements I had, and how bad the battery life was. I told how my grandmother has an iphone 4 and I sat down comparing the 2 (battery life wise) and she chewed me out saying things like, "How dare you compare AT&T and Verizon!" I didn't want to listen to her chewing me out so I hung up. The next day I gave apple a call once again and they told me things I had already heard several times so I hung up. I called Verizon back and they said ok let's send you a replacement phone. Well the replacement phone came and wouldn't ya know it? The phone still had the same problem and on top of that they only sent me a phone. No box, no headphones, no USB cable, no charger. I called Verizon about this and asked why they only sent me a phone and they said, "Well you get to keep the phone but we want the other things back. The box, headphones, charger, USB cable, ect." I told them no and that they could have their refurbished phone back. This phone was not even refurbished. the reason I kow that is because it had someone's name written in the phone and it was still on 4.2.5. Had it been refurbished they would have done a fresh restore and update as 4.2.5 was deemed obsolete. That was very insulting in my opinion. So I sent that back and contacted apple one last time. I asked what other options I had as I was stressed and did not want to hear the same things I have already heard. they said they could send me a new phone free of charge and have me send back my current phone. I agreed to give it one last shot but I am still not confident that this phone will be any different.
Now that's my story. Now let me go into a discussion. I have been doing my own litle "investigation on this phone to see what is making this phone drain so bad. I took a look at a report from iFixit.com and they revealed some pretty interesting things built into the Verizon iPhone. I am not going into detail about it but you can google it and see for yourself and read the article about the components. They built the phone with not only CDMA tech but also GSM. Now what purpose would that serve? Honestly? That is a big battery drainer right there. Secondly, they found that the phone contained a different model battery that was lighter and had less capacity than the GSM version of the iPhone 4. That's a second red flag. My mission right now is to get Apple's attention that these phones do indeed have aproblem and they need to be looked at because this just aint workin'. I have had several replacements done (all have the same issue), several thousands of people are reporting the same results with their battery on the web, and Apple chooses to ignore it. Something needs to be done and I encourage any Verizon iPhone user to take action and make this issue known. I have a website with contact information of people who work high up in the chain of Apple along with Scott Forstall's contact info. Go to http://idevicesupport.webs.com/apps/blog/show/6441029-update and find a contact you like and call it and deman that apple investigate these phones. We can get this issue resolved if we make it known. Don't be mean or nasty to them. They are very nice people but at the sametime don't let them talk over you. Make your voice heard. Thanks for listening guys. Take care. - Joe

  • RAM issues continued

    Hey everyone!
I was just reading an archived post from around this time last year entitled "Strange RAM issue." I too have had a strange RAM issue and specifically with my G4 PowerBook (15", 1GHz) and OWC. I also wanted to upgrade from 512 to 1GB and could never get the machine to work at 1GB. I am currently in the process of sending back my third consecutive OWC brand RAM to them and they are finally going to send me some TechWorks memory that I'm hoping will work. I just can't believe...every single set of memory they've sent me has tested out "fine" to them either after I sent it back or in the latest case even before they sent it to me. But it never works in my computer and always fails the Rember test.
Their latest take on it is that the Rember test isn't always reliable and that it's probably a problem with the memory port in the computer in that it won't accept outside (aka non-Apple) memory. What are some people's thoughts on this? Is it possible that the memory port could work just fine with the original computer's RAM and not with new RAM? Is there any truth to Rember not being all that reliable of a test? (If so, why would they have you use it?)
I'm really getting frustrated with OWC and I was wondering if that's just me or have other people had this same problem?

My iPhone 6 128GB will still not sync certain songs from my iTunes library after the update.
This is beyond a joke now... I have paid for something I expect to use and can't.
What's more frustrating is that now my iPad keeps saying 'No Sim Installed' after the update.

I'm sorry, you don't say, but how are you being met by silence from Apple? This is a user to user support forum, if you want to contact Apple Care, the method is in the lower right of these pages under Contact Us. If you would like to troubleshoot the issues you are having, someone here is probably willing to have a go at it, but I'm not sure if that is what you are looking for.

  • Site Manager Update Issue Continues

    Duncan;
It appears that the iTunes U Desktop Application update issue has not been resolved. I added new content to a collection (see attached link) on Friday. As of this morning, the tracks have not appeared in the iTunes U Desktop application (ver. 10.0.1), although they do appear in the Quick View Preview, but cannot be previewed in that window.
The tracks have been available for preview and download all weekend on the iPad and iPhone.

    Greetings All;
Just checking to see what, if anything has happened with the Public Site Manager Update issue on your campus or in your office.
I've uploaded content that still hasn't shown up in the iTunes Desktop Application in over two weeks.
Oddly enough, I have added URL's to our site, and that information shows up within an hour of Publishing the site.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a resolution of the issue.

I have purchased the system recovery disks from HP for my dr9225nr pavilion and purchased a new hard drive at their request because my first attempt to install the recovery image ended with the same error code. So I now have a new hard drive the HP supplied image recovery DVD's and still get the same error. When I contact HP they want me to pay $59 for a one time service fee to troubleshoot my problem. Does anyone know what this error is and how I can fix it?
I cannot access the old hard drive at all. I was able to prior to my first attempt to recover with the recovery disks but after that when it goes to boot it black screens with just a cursor or "missing boot manager".
Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated..

I have seen others have problems with Recovery Disks, especially Vista Recovery Disks- not really sure why. Most of your Vista drivers will work in Windows 7. You may be able to explore the disks and find the installers. Or you can download the drivers from your models support page. I looked for it but can't find one for the model you specified-dr9225nr- are you sure that is the correct model?
Once you are sure of correct model number by checking Service Tag attached to bottom you can find your support page by using the button at top of this page titled "Support & Drivers".

  • Microsoft Project - Resource Pool Major Issues (continuation)

    Hi All,
I have followed the the very helpful discussions in this forum under "Resource Pool Major Issues". I have read all the other related discussions as well.
I still have a question on the Resource Pool:- I am using a stand-alone version of Project Professional 2007
I create a Resource Pool; a Master Schedule and then insert several different Project Schedules into the Master.
I have gone through the motions of harmonizing the calenders and all the other good stuff recommended in the blog.
I then share the resources from the Pool.
When I open each activity to load the resources, I cannot see the shared resources except at the Project level (but not at the task level)
The only way I can pull the resources into the tasks is
if I break the links of each inserted Project. (incidentally the inserted tasks are automatically linked option is de-selected)
Even then, I get an irritating message pop-up saying that the calender does not exist.
Has anyone had this experience, is it the correct way to share the resources; and do you have any thoughts, suggestions on this matter?
    Thanks
    FK

    Hard Core,
You indicate you have Project 2007 but you didn't tell us if you have SP3 installed. If not, do so.
Since you indicate that you have "read all related discussions" I will assume that you are aware of the tenuous nature of linked structures in Project and that they are prone to corruption.
Please clarify something. What exactly do you mean by "open each activity" and "I cannot see the shared resources except at the Project level"? Also, which links are you breaking?
We can't really tell you if what you are doing is the correct way, (probably not if you have to break links for it to work), until we understand exactly what you are doing.

  • Problems issuing continuous requests to a server through URLConnection

    Hi ,
I have a URLConnection object 'uc' obtained from a URL object tied to a server URL.
i m issuing HTTP requests continously to this server by calling ' uc = u.openConnection()' everytime
Hence this will return me a new URL Connection object everytime.
After some 300-400 requests, the program ends abruptly , this may be due to shortage of resources to be allocated to the I/O streams of the URL connection.
My question is -is there some way to issue multiple requests from the same URL Connection object ? or is there some other method of issuing multiple requests which does not consume a lot of resources ?
Note: The server accepts only GET method, so i cant write the contents to the output stream of the connection to translate it to a new request every time .
    Thanx

My question is -is there some way to issue multiple

A HttpURLConnection instance can only be used to issue one http request. What can be re-used is the underlying TCP connection, with the keep-alive header (HTTP 1.1 persistent connections). But that should be handled transparently and by default by the servlet engine.
The later is able to manipulate the stream to increase performance, if you do not close the stream, i.e you don't call conn.disconnect() or by specify the "Connection: close" request property
    ( conn.setRequestProperty("Connection", "close") )
So, you shouldn't actually close the steam, just flush it (if you close it, the physical socket connection will be terminated).
All the http persistent connection/keep-alive issues were apparently fixed in J2SE 1.4.1 ....(are you using 1.4 ?)
To optimize further, you could take a look at :
