5200 is benchmarking like a dead snail...

Well, I'm back after a few months, same old sh*t...
My MSI 5200 is being such a bi*ch these days:
I've benchmarked it with 3DMark`03, and there's a lot of stuff I can't figure out...
First of, the only game test that works well is #1, Wings of Fury. The other ones are on an FPS of 3-10!!! Is that possible for an 5200? Is it normal?
The CPU tests are fine, but when I get to the sound tests, all hell breaks loose.
The second test with the 24 sounds starts, and then the 3DMark just shuts down. PC back to normal, desktop and everything... what in the hell is that???
Drivers are NVidia's latest 56.72, DirectX 9.0b, BIOS on latest 1.5 (I have a MSI mobo). Tried every possible driver combination, no luck.
Another thing that is weird, I tried OCing it a bit, and the results in 3DMark were even worse... anyway, I would've posted the scores but I can't as the sound test shuts the thing down...
BTW, don't anyone tell me it's a PSU problem, cause I've just put an Antec 450W from a friend, and it was exactly the same.
And it acts the same in the friends PC, which is pretty much same as mine except the PSU...
Any tips???

O.K. I won't say it's your power supply. Then it's probably your video card! But, if your power supply +12v amps are too low - then you're starving the video card of the power it needs when more stressful areas of benchmarking are applied....hence the crash at sound test. The FX5200 isn't really a bad card, it's designed for light gaming, and it is slightly better than the MX series cards. There are some real good deals on FX Ultra cards right now - the 5700 and 5900 Ultras and XT's come to mind. But, if you install one of those cards, and end up with similar problems - then it all boils down to amps on the +12v.

  • My sound card is working like a dead fish !

    Hello everyone, from France !
Since a few months, I am having totally amazing sound problems with the internal audio of my MacBook Pro core duo 2.
This happens mainly when I am in Second Life (using voice, but not necessarily when I speak). The longer I stay on, the more jerky and corrupted the sound becomes. Yet the whole thing was working perfectly a year ago, on same configuration, a few upgrades earlier.
I posted an mp3 to let you guys hear what my problem sounds like, as I thougt it might help :
    http://wvorg.online.fr/posts/audio-bug.mp3
I should add that at the same time as this happens, the mouse gets very jerky also, sometimes stay blocked at the same place for a second, and the computer in general starts running real slow.
This happens even when only Second Life is open.
I tried re-installing Second Life, I ran TechTool... no problem detected.
I am looking for any suggestion to fix this problem, that right now just make me think that there is a physical problem somewhere. Please proove me wrong !

Hi, there's a current issue with Second Life on MacBook Pro's with NVidia graphic cards. There is no solution as of yet, and if you continue, the program will bring your entire system to a grinding stop.
If you run Second Life in Bootcamp though, the issue goes away, since the Windows driver for the same card in your machine runs fine. This has been the preferred solution currently.

  • No status LED - it's like a dead device

    Hello,
i want to use my old AirPort Express (one of the old ones with no power cable) again.
The orange LED shows (not blinking) while the station boots, but after a minute or so the LED turnes off.
I tried a hardware reset (holding the reset button while it boots until the LED blinks), this doesn't help.
Don't belive that the station is now crap, didn't use it since about 1 year.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Power supply is dead.. they do die after a few years.

  • Does this sound like a dead Time Capsule?

Came home this aft to no WIFI.  Checked and the light was off on my Time Capsule (first generation) but otherwise intenret connectios seemed OK.
Powered the TC off/on; green light came on momentarily, changed to orange for about 30 seconds, then went off again.  Repeated the cycle several times with no difference.
I have noticed recently that the hard-drive in my TC was getting noisy but everything appeared to be working until a few hours ago.
I recall there were issues with the early Time Capsules and sudden death.  Does this sound like that situation?
Welcome advice on whether current generation Time Capsules are more reliable or would a better course be to replace it with a generic router and seprate backup disk?
    Thanks ..donald

Apple treated me well on this.  My TC was 15 months out of warranty when I took it to the Genius Bar.  About the only question asked was "do you have Apple Care on another product?", following which a replacement TC was produced, some paperwork signed and I was on my way.
    Only a couple of reservations:
The replacement TC, according to the Genius, is new "service stock" (not a refurnished unit) but the same model as my original TC; i.e. First Generation.  This leaves me guessing it will have about a 2-yaer lifespan as well, so I I should plan on upgrading well in advance.  I'll be listening carefully for strange noises and watching how hot it gets.
The second reservation is about security of the information on the TC; al the Time Machine backups plus a little bot of other stuff.  The old TC was boxed for return to Apple and I have to trust Apple that it will be securly destroyed.  Trust is a big thing.

Log in to the Developer forum. You will find instructions on how to install the lastest beta. Your problem is the beta you have installed has expired. All of them did on October 5; you will find hundreds of threads discussing this. If you have a beta it is assumed that you will continue as a beta tester, so a simple update using iTunes will not work.
If you no longer want to be a beta tester install the GM 7.0.2 by restoring from iTunes using DFU mode.

  • How would i know if my battery is DEAD

i have a c6 phone and it has a major sickness not even key shortcuts can turn it on so can anybody tell me if i were able to take my battery out of my phone while charging will it die like it wont be able to work at all like its dead because i took my battery while charging? Cause i tried charging it for several hours but still it wont turn on and when i took it off from charging my phone wont vibrate whenever i turn it on. So does this mean my phone doesnt have a problem or is it just my battery being dead already so does that me do i need to change my battery? please help me nokia agents and nokia users please i really need urgent HELP. Thank YOU!

As a replacement battery is so cheap it is probably worth trying this before seeking service and at the very least you have a new spare, although I doubt that this is the underlying issue upon C6-00.

  • I think my PB G4 is dead, what can I do with hard drive?

I'm convinced my Powerbook G4 17" 1.5GHz OS 10.4 (let's call him "Mr. Dead") has died...maybe you can verify my diagnosis near the bottom.  Since I think he's dead, but I think the hard drive might be fine, I'd like advice on what I can do with the hard drive (for recovering data & looking at how I had the old system setup).
RESOURCES:  I have a new Macbook Pro on order ("MBP"), and access to 2 Powerbook G4 17" 1.67GHz, one running 10.4, the other 10.5.  The G4 10.4 is an sometimes-used system (let's call him "Useful"), and the G4 10.5 is one that's freshly-installed but no one is using currently (let's call him "Idle").
I thought of 2 basic options here.  Bear in mind I'm not a hardware guy.  I've installed RAM, that's it.  Though I expect I can manage to follow online instructions on how to pull a hard drive from a Powerbook.  My main worry is buying the wrong thing, which I think would be easy to do, since I don't know much about hardware tinkering.
SOLUTION 1) Put Dead's hard drive into a Firewire enclosure, then he can at least be a data drive to pull stuff off of.  Would I also be able to boot off of his install?  What do I need to know to buy the right enclosure?  Does anyone recommend any?
SOLUTION 2)  Put Dead's hard drive into one of the other Powerbooks, perhaps only temporarily.  Then I can boot it, look at it, put that Powerbook into Firewire Target Disk Mode, etc.  Will that work?  Is it hard?  Are there any issues with the dissimilarities between Dead and the other Powerbooks (the other 2 are faster chips, and one is already at 10.5)?
Are there pros/cons to solution 1 vs 2?
DIAGNOSIS:  Why I think Dead has died:
He's been acting weird the past 2 days or so, freezing, requiring hard shutdowns.  Then Monday, he wouldn't boot...what I could most often get out of it, after resetting the PMU, is to get the POST to give me 3 beeps (bad RAM).  But I've tried the RAM modules from Dead in the other Powerbooks, and the RAM is fine.
Every once in a while it ALMOST acts like it wants to boot...I get a chime, or a chime with a burst of static, but even then, the hard drive then quiets down, the screen stays black, it goes silent, and the system remains dormant.

My recollection is the bad memory slot issue only affected the 1.5 and 1.67ghz PowerBooks with 15-inch displays. However, BGreg's suggestion of RAM swapping should reveal if it somehow affected a few 17s.
Every once in a while it ALMOST acts like it wants to boot...I get a chime, or a chime with a burst of static, but even then, the hard drive then quiets down, the screen stays black, it goes silent, and the system remains dormant.
That does sound like a dead hard drive but my 17-inch 1Ghz has, like almost every other PowerBook, a dead PRAM battery and they are nearly impossible to find other than as "used/pulled." Sounds like buying used chewing gum to me!
If I let the main battery (which is an original Apple replacement and still good) run down the computer will not start from the A/C adaptor alone. If I hit the start button when the main battery is flat, I get similar noises that you describe but it goes nowhere. If I walk away, leaving the charger plugged in, the computer will boot 5-10 minutes later.
So if your are living with a dead main battery and we accept that nearly every PowerBook has a defunct backup (PRAM) battery, you won;t get far without replacing the battery. Apple no longer sells PB batteries so that throws you into the third-party pool where not all batteries are created equal.
If you want to get an new main battery, I'd try these guys first as they are an established Mac equipment vendor with excellent customer service:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple_laptop/batteries/PowerBook_G4_17
Pricey for a pre-2006 machine that may have a dead hard drive.
One old trick is to turn off the computer, remove the main battery and leave the PB on the A/C unit for 24-48 hours, then reinstall the main battery and try booting. The theory: the backup battery is rechargeable and there is the off-chance that it will get "pumped up" enough during that it will help with the next boot. It's a good step in that the only cost to you is 24-48 hours of time.

  • White dot (not dead pixel) on external LCD monitor.

    Hi all,
I recently noticed a strange situation. I've owned a MacBook Pro 13" since October, and usually run it with an external Samsung T260 LCD monitor by MiniDP to DVI. I run the monitor at its full resolution of 1920x1200.
When I arrange the monitors so that the Samsung is on top of my MBP, there is a white dot about the size of a pixel approximately 3 inches from the left and 1/2 inch from the bottom of the screen. I thought it was a dead pixel, but when I move the external monitor to be on the left of the MBP, the white dot moves to 3 inches from the top and 1/2 inch from the right.
    * The white dot does not appear when I arrange the monitors in any other configuration.
    * The white dot appears when using MiniDP to VGA adapter as well.
    * When I zoom using the modifer key+scroll method, the white dot grows bigger.
I've tried using the JScreenFix applet, but as I said, it doesn't look like a dead pixel.
Can anyone offer any other suggestions, that may involved poking around in the Video RAM space?
    Thanks,
    -Tony

    Hi all,
Just returning to provide more information:
While playing around with my screen layouts, I found that the white dot is actually part of the menu bar graphic. I arranged my monitors and captured the screen to show the placement of the dot.

  • EMac HD dead?

I have an eMac 1.25 Ghz that suddenly crashed and won't boot up. I am pretty sure it sounds like a dead hard drive because I hear clicking noise as it tries to access it to boot up. All I get when I try to start is a grey screen and eventually a flashing folder icon. I believe this happened after a power surge.
    Things I tried:
    1. it boots successfully from install CD but the install CD doesn't recognize the HD as existing to repair disk of check permissions
    2. it boots fine from a firewire drive, same, not recognizing the internal hd
    3. it successfully boots target firewire and again fails to see the internal HD
    4. I tried zapping pram to no avail
    5. I even heard of turning the computer upside down and rebooting, although I don't know if that's a myth. I tried it anyway and no luck.
So, any thing else anyone can think of? I know I can just put in a new HD but that is a lot of work to crack open that sucker (to get to the HD) compared to an iMac G3.
Any ideas will be graciously thanked!
    Paul

The "turn the computer upside down" sounds like a garbled suggestion of reseting the PMU using the PMU reset button inside the battery compartment; since your Mac is starting up, just can't find an internal HD, that's an unnecessary step.
Your diagnoses of a dead HD sounds unfortunately accurate. You can replace the internal HD; see Apple eMac Upgrade Guide. You may find it just as easy to pick up an external Firewire HD, format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) / HFS+ (most drives other than those from LaCie come formated as Windows NTFS, which the Mac can read but not write), and install OS X onto the external drive using your OS X Install optical disc. Make sure any external drive has Firewire ports; PowerPC Macs such as the eMac cannot boot off an external USB drive. You can buy a complete drive ready to go out of the box from online vendors (e.g., LaCie drives from Small Dog Electronics); to save money, you can buy a bare (internal) hard drive and put it in a Firewire case yourself (see PT: HD drive replacement tips).
The first time you boot from the external drive (and anytime you boot after doing a PRAM reset; see What's stored in PRAM?), you'll hold the option key down to bring up Startup Manager, then open System preferences and set Startup Disk to the external HD.
With a bootable external Firewire HD, you can see if the one-file evaluation copy of Data Rescue can find the damaged internal HD, which would let you recover any files on the HD not backup up onto other media. Drive Genius may be worth looking at, too.
You'll want to protect your electronics from future power glitches. Be warned that common inexpensive surge protectors use as few as one MOV to clamp power spikes, and are are essentially one-shot protection devices --- the first surge that comes down the line will pretty well remove any future protection from such surge outlets (a green status LED is meaningless). Better surge protectors use multiple redundant MOVs along with inductors and capacitors; they cost more but can provide real protection. The reference surge protector in the lab where I work is the Tripp Lite Isobar line (prices are lower on Amazon than on their website).
An even better choice would be an Uninterpretable Power Supply (UPS), which will protect against momentary brownouts and blackouts as well as power surges. I've used various APC BackUPS models. Connect the UPS to the Mac via USB cable, and in OS X 10.3 and later, Energy Saver will then show a UPS tab where you can set the Mac to shut down gracefully in case of an extended power outage.

  • Dead insect behind glass on iMac

I have a 27 iMac (late 2012) that has what looks like a dead insect behind the glass (Excel is shown behind the bug).
I have no idea how it got there and it wasn't there a week ago.
I was under the impression that nothing could get in there based on this quote from Apple's iMac website:
The LCD itself is 5 mm thinner than before, and we used an advanced process called full lamination to eliminate a 2-mm gap between the LCD and the glass, something that has never been done on a display this large.
I'm still under warranty and under AppleCare.
Any idea on how to rid myself of this bug?  Or keep this from happening again?

If you have AppleCare, definitely call them and have them debug it.

  • IPod 3G dead

Hi. My iPod 3G won't turn on. I've tried hooking it up to my computer via FireWire and to a power source via the power adapter, but it won't turn on or charge. I'm thinking it's the battery, but before I buy a new one, I just wanted to see if it sounds like a dead battery or something else.
If it is the battery, I'm assuming this is what I need to do:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iPod-3rd-Generation-Battery/383/1
    Thanks!
    Brent

    Hey Jason,
And have you've tried toggling the hold switch on the iPod back and forth several times?
See this article, if there anything in there that you haven't tried:
    iPod won't turn on
Another thing you may want to try, if nothing else has seemed to work, is:
Connect the iPod to your computer for maybe 5-10 seconds.
Without ejecting the iPod from your computer or resetting it, promptly unplug it from the USB cord.
Try this several times, perhaps adding variations like resetting intermittently.
This possible method has only worked for a couple of different people on here who had iPods that were frozen, but not the issue of not turning on properly.
So, I'm not sure if that is relevant to your issue, but I'd suggest to still give it a try.
    I hope that helps you.

  • Database Performance Evaluation Benchmarking Tuning

Does anyone by chance have any articles or websites that deal with Oracle (or generic) database performance evaluation, benchmarking, and/or tuning for a STANDALONE PC database installation? I have Oracle 10g installed on my personal machine and I want to find some information that will help me place the performance evaluation into a more professinal context. Any links relating to this would be very appreciated.
    regards,
    John

Why do you expect there to be a difference in evaluating performance for a standalone PC database installation vs. a server database installation? Other than the fact that, presumably, you won't find network events in the top wait events, I'm hard-pressed to think of any differences.
You would evaluate performance and tune the system the same way on a standalone database as on a database on a server box-- you would figure out what operations are important, figure out how quickly those operations need to run, figure out which of the important operations are running slowly, figure out what those operations are spending time doing, and then figure out how to reduce the runtime. Of course, each of those steps can potentially be rather involved. There are plenty of articles and books on performance tuning-- Oracle has a few manuals, Jonathan Lewis's book on the cost based optimizer is excellent, Cary Millsap's optimization book is top flight, etc.
As for benchmarking, unless the intention is to run something like the TPC benchmark on your desktop, which would seem odd, your benchmark is generally closely tied to your application-- i.e. figuring out how quickly the system performs a particular business operation. Generic benchmarks like TPC tend not to be particularly useful in the real world because they are unlikely to mimic your real workload.

  • Example of Aperture dead pixel problem

A lot of people have been complaining about green pixels in their converted output. I noticed a pixel in the RAW image as rendered within Aperture and went in for a closer look. It's more like a dead pixel. I've put up crops of an image mangnified at 300%:
    Aperture:

    Photoshop CS2:

Make sure you're looking at the "Original" size of the file (located at the bottom of the webpage)
This is a pretty glaring example of some major processing problems with CoreImage. I'm going to send a bug report to Apple.
    G5 1.8G SP, 1.5M RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I think this was one of the biggest concerns that I had with Aperture: the reliance on OSX code to decode the RAW files. If Apple were to re-write their RAW file processor or need to tweak it to fix this bug, it would likely need to come in the form of an update to the operating system. A couple of problems with that:
    1) Sometimes, because of other problems with an update, you might not want to update your OS. Say, an update fixes something in Aperture, but breaks Mail. Which is more important?
    2) OS updates are likely to be released more slowly than application updates. This may not be the case since Apple may release Aperture product updates even slower, but there are a whole slew of considerations that developers need to take into account when getting something merged into the much larger OSX train.
Maybe Apple can release small RAW updates that only affect the portion of the OS that deals with RAW. I seem to reall them doing that with other apps. It remains to be seen how well and how quickly they respond to these issues. I know a lot of people are probably waiting to see how responsive Apple is before entrusting their library to a proprietary application.
