64MB Video Ram in Bootcamp?

Why is my Bootcamp's VRAM only 64MB when my Mac states it has 512MB?
On the website 'Can You Run It', this low VRAM is what's making my games fail the recommended.
HERE ARE MY SPECS:
Processor  2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
I can still play games on Bootcamp (Battlefield 3, GTA 4... and even much older games) but they lag upon turning up to even medium settings.
Mac games run perfectly, though.
How do I fix this problem?

it's called shared video memory
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_graphics_memory
your video card have 64MB video memory and can then "borrow" the slower system ram and use it for video memory

The HD4000 graphics in your Mac has a tiny amount of dedicated memory (the 32 MB you're seeing) and borrows what it needs from your system RAM. That's where OS X reports its 384-512 MB. Games should still work fine, just set your resolution and in-game detail options accordingly. Most games should run OK at the MBP's native 1280x800 resolution at low to medium details.

  • Intel HD Graphics 3000 only has 64mb video ram?

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch Early 2011 model (MC700LL/A). It has Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB memory on Mac OS X.
However, after installing Windows 7, I found out that I have only 64MB of dedicated video memory instead of 384MB?
Is it a bug or it really has 64mb of video memory?
    I can't play games smoothly on Windows 7.(GTA IV, TDU2, NFS:TheRun)

  • Missing video ram

    I have a 1ghz Titanium G4 with the ATI 9000 mobility 64mb video ram. OSx 10.3.9 1gig ram
Recently I have discovered that the system profiler lists my total video ram as 32 mb. My overall game performance seems diminished when playing graphically intense games such as Unreal Tournament 2004.
This discovery seems to have occurred around the same time that I had a battery charging problem which I have since fixed. My system has also been suffering increasing freezes upon wake from sleep or screen saver.
I recently perfomed an archive/installation of my OS hoping that might restore some corrupted files in the system, but no luck.
Has anyone else seen this problem or know of a cause/solution?
    Thanks.

Hi, pioche. A 1GHz Tibook certainly ought to have 64MB of VRAM, and if it doesn't, the only reasonable conclusion is that the missing half has failed. It's all soldered onto the main logic board, so the remedy is to replace the board. Of course another alternative might be to avoid asking too much of the remaining 32MB, and thereby save quite a bit of money. That's what I'd do if there weren't any other signs that might point to a larger failure of the LB, but it sounds as though yours may be on its way out. Have you run the Hardware Test CD that came with the Powerbook?

im using my mac for gaming and need some dedicated video ram, I saw other computers like asus or Toshiba that were able to boot into windows bios and change there ram as dedicated ram, bootcamp has no bios so im wondering if there any third party applications of something built into bootcamp that would allow me to change a setting like that.

  • Video Ram loss in Windows 7 64bit (bootcamp)

    Hello Mac gurus.
I currently own the latest edition of IMac 21.5" 2.5Ghz Quad-core processor desktop.  I had partitioned my HD with Snow Leopard and 32bit Windows 7.  While running that, I showed the full 512mb Video Ram on my card.  It even showed upwards of 1Gb whenever I did "tests" at canirunit.com.
I recently replaced the 32bit Win 7 with the 64bit version to increase Ram output, etc... However now whenever i run it through the same website it only shows 229mb of Video Memory.  I also did the "dxdiag" on the start menu of Win 7 and got the same result.
After calling apple support they said to update the video card drivers, and run a hardware test.  Did both (drivers on the win7 side not snow leopard).  Hardware came back ok.  512mb as shown on my video card, however i still am only showing the 229mb available video memory when I run the same tests mentioned above.  I am also noticing quite a bit more pop in and video lag/low resolutions when playing Arma 2.  Graphical issues I did not notice before.
Any suggestions on how to correct this issue, if in fact I actually have one.
    Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have same problem with my Sandisk 8 Gb Ultra. I've tried plenty driver but stil didn't work. Then I found this page: http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/All-SanDisk-USB-Flash-Drives/Sandisk-Cruzer-not-rec ognized-by-Windows-7/td-p/233208. They said Sandisk have problem with Windows 7, and you can try their method to make it works. I'm not yet trying it, but I've tried changing sd card with my other sdcard (micro sd actually, with adapter, branded V-GeN) and it works with original Apple broadcom sdcard driver (from bootcamp assistant). So the problem not with Apple or SD card reader, but with Sandisk and Windows 7. So, do above method, or change your sd card, or change your OS, til solution come up with this.
PS: There is other solution. Just open your sandisk card on Mac, then copy your file to Mac partition, then you can open it from Windows 7 (to modify, you have to copy it to Windows partition first). And vice versa.

  • Is it possible to increase GMA 950 Video Ram from 64MB?

    Hi,
Sorry if this question has been answered plenty of times before, but I am wondering if there is a way to increase the GMA shared VRAM from 64MB?
If not is Apple planning to make this a configurable option in future firmware versions?
The reason I'm worring about video RAM is although the GMA 950 holds up pretty well in OS X animations, as soon as I start using 2 or more desktops in spaces, or 2 monitors, things get choppy. Has anyone else had this problem and if so did anyone find a solution?

That might be a good idea. I started out with an upgrade myself and had a few problems. I then did a new install and it runs much better. You might want to try an Archive and Install.

  • Bootcamp Dedicated Video RAM

    Hey guys,
I have a 2012 13'' inch macbook pro. This has the Intel HD 4000 graphics card. I have upgraded it to 16GB of RAM and and have windows 8.1 installed on a bootcamp partition.
Currently on my windows side it says that I only have 32mb of dedicated video ram.  On the apple side it says I have 512mb.  I would like to increase the dedicated video RAM on the windows side to fully use what my computer is capable of.  Normally in a windows computer to change your video RAM amount you go into the BIOS section, but since this is on a mac it doesn't have one.
I have been through about a billion tech support calls so here is a list of the things I've tried.
    What I've tried:
         1.  Using Refind to access BIOS on this.
-The new version doesn't seem to do much for windows as the only bootup option I am given is to bootup normally
         2.  Force the intel HD graphics driver 15.33.30.64.3958 to download and install
-Forcing it still doesn't have it run properly.  I've contacted intell and they say their drivers don't always work on laptops
         3.  Using parallels
-Unfortunately parallels runs extremely slowly when you're trying to use 512 mb of dedicated video ram for some reason
Any help, or a direction to go in would be greatly appreciated.

You may not need to do all this. Please read http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-033984.htm .

  • Dedicated Video RAM (64 MB?!?!?!)

Could someone explain me what dedicated Video RAM is, please? I have the better MBP 13'' with the Intel HD Graphics 4000.  Behind that information it say "512". I thought that meant I'd have 512 MB VRAM! True?
If I check a game on canyourunit.com (I have Bootcamp Win 7 64 Bit) it always says my dedicated Video Ram would be too low. I would only have 64MB. According to that website I wouldn't even be able to play Age of Empires III, well I can play that game perfectly...
    Can someone help me out?
    Thanks! Passer

The video memory (Vram) on any Intel integrated graphics is dynamic meaning that the amount allocated is dependant on  :
The amount of total memory installed in the machine ie 2Mb, 4Mb etc
The program being used and how graphically demanding it is.
Thus the machine will allocate anything from 64 Mb upto 768Mb, you as the user can not normally change this.
(This is the same for Windows machines with Intel graphics)

  • Allocating more video ram?

ive read the bootcamp only emulates an integrated video card which allows 64MB of video RAM. is this true? im trying to run a game that requires 128MB, my macbook pro is 256MB.
    is it dueable?

VMs like Parallels may limit video, but Windows Vista maps VRAM to system memory and so rather than showing the video card only, shows much more, even with 64-bit and dedicated graphics (8600 GTS PCIe).
As graphics cards get bigger and games hit 2GB application space, games are hitting the 32-bit walls.

  • Increasing Dedicated Video RAM? (Intel HD Graphics - Satellite A665-S6086)

My Satellite A665-S6086 Laptop uses Intel HD Graphics, and I wish to increase the dedicated video RAM.
Through dxdiag, it says I have 1696MB of Approximate Total Memory, but I only use 64Mb according to: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/analysis.aspx?name=The-Elder-Scrolls-V:-Skyrim&id=11231&se...
I went into the BIOS Setup -> Advanced, but was unable to find anything to alter the amount of Video RAM.
If anybody has a solution to this, please share it.
    Thanks,
    Chibichuba.
    Solved!

...But you are not able to with the stock Toshiba motherboard....
Then you still cannot do it unless you replace the whole motherboard.

  • Video RAM... necessary for Audio Programs?

when running programs like Logic Audio, is it significant to upgrade video RAM from 64MB to 128MB? or is this more relevant to video programs?

Video Ram is used for building up the picture on your screen (simplified). When running applications like Logic Pro there maybe (will be) an advantage when adding memory to accelerate your PB.
btw. upgrading VideoRam isn't possible unless changeing your PB's mainboard.

  • Can I change the graphic card on Toshiba Satellite S55-A5295 or add more dedicated video RAM?

Hello, I am wondering if it was possible to change my graphics card. Currently its using the basic (Intel HD Graphics 4000/Family). If thats not possible then I'd also like to know if it was possible to dedicate more video RAM since it currently has 64MB out of the total 1696 avaliable graphics memory. And before someone mentions the BIOS option sadly its not shown there. Please let me know if I have any options!

There is no option to change the GPU on this laptop model. As per memory sharing, it is done automatically by the chipset sharing around 10-20% of the physical memory to the graphics memory.
What will you be using the higher ram?
Is it gaming, media editing (video / photo), or 3D editing?
