A bunch of questions

How does the emulated electric guitar and effects sound? If I were to emulate distortion guitar with a MIDI controller (not a real guitar), does it sound realistic or cheesy?
Can I play notes directly on the Mac  (without an external MIDI controller)? For example, could QWERTYUI map to an octave? This would be if I'm out somewhere and just want to fiddle around without bringing an external MIDI.
Let's say I have 4 layers, and I want to assign 4 physical faders/knobs to control their volumes. If my MIDI keyboard doesn't have multiple faders (such as the M-Audio 88 Key), can I connect a second MIDI device to adjust the 4 layers coming from the keyboard? Also, is it possible to assign mac keyboard shortcuts to adjust volume up/down for 4 layers?
If I have multiple Macs, do I need to buy a copy for each Mac? Or can I uninstall from one Mac, then reinstall on the second? Is there a trial version of MainStage?
Thanks in advance for any answers!

That'd depend on how well you played it, and on the complexity of the intended guitar parts.

Yes

Yes ( you could also use Logic Remote on an iPad)

No

Technically, the AppStore licence permits you to install on as many Macs as you "own or control".
2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
A. Mac App Store License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Product Usage Rules set forth in the Mac App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running OS X (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control; and
(ii) if you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, to download, install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software for use either: (a) by a single individual on each of the Mac Computer(s) that you own or control, or (b) by multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Computer that you own or control. For example, a single employee may use the Apple Software on both the employee’s desktop Mac Computer and laptop Mac Computer, or multiple students may serially use the Apple Software on a single Mac Computer located at a resource center or library.

  • Bunch of questions for 2k+ video editing setup. Please help if possible

Hello everyone, I'm in the process of building a desktop (mainly for video editing -- with some graphic design and gaming here and there). I'll be working with Canon 5D III raw footage (Magic Lantern) and typical dslr h.264 for the time being. Eventually I'll be working with 2.5k and possibly 4k. I mainly use Premiere Pro and syncing with AE, though with this new build I will start on DaVinci as well.
This is what I have OR considering thus far:
(Just purchased) CPU: Intel Core i7-4930K 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor
(Just purchased) Motherboard: Asus X79 DELUXE ATX LGA2011 Motherboard
(just purchased) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Video Card
(just purchased) Power Supply: SeaSonic G-750 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
(already owned) Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
(already owned) Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
(considering) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
    (considering) Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
(considering) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive
(considering) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive
(consdering) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive
(considering) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
    computer tower -- very undecided
My main concern right now is setting up the hard drives. I've been reading and researching on how other editors are structuring their system, but it seems everyone has slightly different setup. So I'm somewhat confused on a smooth and optimal setup. Is this a good setup:
    1) Samsung 840 250gb -- for OS/apps
    2) Samsung 840 evo 120gb -- for project files/media cache/scratch disk?
    3) 2x Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200rpm in Raid 0 -- for meda/raw files?
    4) WD Caviar 3TB 5400rpm -- for exports/general storage/etc
Is that okay? Should I get another HDD to separate project files, media cache, and/or scratch disk? Is Raid 0 necessary? Most likely I'll be using onboard raid option and I never done raid before. The reason why I'm going with the Barracuda is because there's a deal on them right now.
**note: I have 5 external hard drives for backup and backing up the backups. I'm not too worried about the reliability of Raid 0 if it means I can get quicker performance.
Another question, can anyone recommend a tower that's under $150? I've been looking at a bunch and just can't decide. I live in NYC and my room does not have AC so having a tower with good airflow is a must. Also my roommate has a cat and I would like to have dust filters (though not as important as I can just buy aftermarket, but having a tower that comes with some would be nice)
Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance!

All my parts have arrived and I'm all set to put together, but I have one more question. According to Tweaker's page:
Media cache & Media cache database files, created on importing media into a project. They contain indexed, conformed audio and peak files for waveform display.
Typically small files, but lots of them, so in the end they still occupy lots of disk space.
Preview (rendered) files, created when the time-line is rendered for preview purposes, the red bar turned to green. Read all the time when previewing the time-line.
Project files, including project auto-save files, that are constantly being read and saved as auto-save files and written when saving your edits.
Media files, the original video material ingested from tape or card based cameras. Typically long files, only used for reading, since PR is a non-destructive editor.
Export files, created when the time-line is exported to its final delivery format. These files are typically only written once and often vary in size from several hundred KB to tens of GB.
1(media cache) should be on the fastest volume and 5(exports) can be on the slowest. Now I have 3 SSD -- Samsung 840 Evo 250GB, Samsung 840 256GB, and Samsung 840 Evo 120GB... I plan on using the non Evo 250gb for OS/programs. That leaves the 120gb and 250gb (both Evo) for media cache and preview. My question is, which one of the two (media cache & preview) will pile up space faster? Should I put meda cache on the 250gb and preview on 120gb? Or flip flop them?
    Sorry for all the questions.

  • ITunes Crashed & Bunch of Question Marks by Songs

My itunes crashed and the preferences became corrupted. All of my song files are on my external hard drive but some of them show the question mark which means they can't be located.
I have gone into preferences so that the correct file on the external is shown as housing the files.
Do I need to consolidate -- I don't want the files copies over again -- I just want the itunes database to recognize the files in their appropriate place.

If the app itself crashed and corrupted your Preferences, then your Library shouldn't be affected. If you have the question mark it sounds like the Library file got corrupted too. If you have a pre-crash backup of the iTunes Library file, then restore that. Otherwise, if there are a lot of broken links you may need to Consolidate after all. However, if your Preferences already point to the eHD where your Music folder is, then Consolidate should not result in your files being copied all over again.

  • Bunch O' Questions

Ok, Im new to the photo iPod and I won't even try to get into the video thing until I get the photos down but...
Adding ablum art .... Is there a way to make this happen automaticaly or do I have to find each album cover and copy and paste it?
Adding Lyrics ... Same question? Then how do I view it from the iPod?
Adding and Deleting photos ... Is there a folder I need to make for the iPod and sync it? Can I delete photos right from the iPod or can I only do it from my computer?
Deleting Duplicate Songs ... Same question about deleting songs from straight from the iPod, can it be done?
Reseting the iPod ... Holding down the "menu" and the "middle" button ... What does this excatly do and will it delete the songs?
Geez! I know, but I think thats it for now ... BTW I'm running XP and have the 5G 60G!
    Thanks for your help guys!

Album art - if you purchased the song(s) from iTunes, it comes with the album art. If you imported your own, you will have to scan or download album image, select the appropriate song(s) on iTunes, and drag the image to the cover image window on the bottom left. When selecting the songs, you can either highlight a single song, highlight multiple songs, or just highlight the album name on the 'album' menu.
If your photos are all in one library (e.g., Picutes>iPhoto Library) that shows up on iPhoto, syncing is automatic. In iTunes, click the iPod tab on the bottom to show sync options, and under the tab for photos, you can choose to upload everything or certain albums. As with music, you can only control photos that show up on the ipod from your computer.
Duplicate songs - must have the song title spelled in the exact same manner. If so, you can select the option to find duplicate songs from the pull-down menu.
Reseting the iPod will not delete the songs! You'll have to restore factory settings with the iPod updater on your computer to do that.
    Good luck!

  • First 6 weeks with Mac Pro - Bunch of questions for you

I'm a new Mac convert and now after having my 1st Mac for about 6 weeks I've developed a list of questions I'd love to have some help with.
    1) How can I "minimize all" like in a PC
    2) Some programs seem to require an admin status to install. Can I do this without logging into a separate admin account? Some will ask for a name and password, but some just won't install correctly. Can I "run as admin" somehow from the start without logging out or user switching first?
    3) If I'm running a fullscreen app (i.e. game such as Age of Empires) is there a way to get to the desktop without quitting the game?
    4) Is there a quick shortcut way to get to the downloads window?
    5) Can I change my mail so that there is a delay before a message is marked "read" - right now even scrolling past it marks it read.
    6) Can I auto log in to a network drive? I have a NAS that i use for backup storage and want it available evertime I start my computer
    7) How do I control what app opens a type of file - for example for a long time until I installed the full adobe PDF program all PDF files were opening in safari and I couldn't adjust the view
    8) I have a hot swap / Firewire drive. For some reason it won't show up unless I physically unplug it and then plug it back in. Is there an "update" that will update all drives and scan for connected drives?
I appreciate any help with these questions - love my Mac and getting great work from Aperture. Have a project with Final Cut express coming up which will be my first movie project on the Mac - used Sony Vegas on the Pc in the past.

    1) How can I "minimize all" like in a PC
    There are several options
    a-Use Expose ( F9, F10, F11 & F12 keys)
b-with the program whose windows you want to minimise active, while holding the option key, click the yellow window widget. All open windows in that program will minimise to the dock.
c-while holding the option key, click on a running programs icon in the dock and choose "hide others" from the popup menu. This will hide all running programs except the one your working on.
    2) Some programs seem to require an admin status to install.
You should be able to enter your admin name & password to install anything. This will affect where some things are installed sometimes, so you can also consider turning on fast user switching, so you have quick access to each account. If all that is not doing it for you ...
You can go to the accounts panel in System Preferences and set the admin account to auto-log in, or to log into the admin account and wait for you to enter the password. If you wanted to run as admin full time, you would do better to change your user account to an admin account and then delete the original admin account. No need for two admin accounts. While it is good practice to run and admin and a user account, the vast majority of Mac users run as admin.
    3) If I'm running a fullscreen app (i.e. game such as Age of Empires) is there a way to get to the desktop without quitting the game?
Command-H will hide most running programs. Clicking on the programs icon in the dock will restore the full screen window.
    4) Is there a quick shortcut way to get to the downloads window?
I like to keep a copy of the download manager in the Finder sidebar. You can get to the download manager from any Finder window, plus you can drag & drop URL's onto the icon to download files.
With the Finder active, press Shift-Command-G, which will open the "Go to Folder" window. Download manager is in /System/Library/CoreServices, so type /System/Library/CoreServices and hit the "go" button, At the bottom of the list, is an application called Verified Download Manager. Drag it to the sidebar of the open Finder window, placing it in the section below the iDisk/Network/HD.
Be careful not to move the actual program, you just want a link to it in the sidebar.
    5) Can I change my mail so that there is a delay before a message is marked "read" - right now even scrolling past it marks it read.
Not that I've found. You might want to visit http://www.hawkwings.net/ where you'll find a lot of Mail.app tips
    6) Can I auto log in to a network drive? I have a NAS that i use for backup storage and want it available evertime I start my computer
You can, several complicated ways come to mind ... I'm going to skip over them as they probably won't work with a PC type NAS anyway. What you could do, is to mount or connect to your NAS, so it is visible in the Finder, then, open the Accounts panel in System Preferences and click on the login items tab. Click the + button to add an item and the navigate/select your NAS.
This will mount your NAS at Startup, but could cause really slow startups and all kinds of other problems if you're using a laptop, or otherwise unable to connect to the NAS at startup/login. If the NAS is always available, this should work fine.
    7) How do I control what app opens a type of file - for example for a long time until I installed the full adobe PDF program all PDF files were opening in safari and I couldn't adjust the view
Select/Click-on (highlight in the finder) any file that you want to modify, and then press Command-I
This will open a get info window for the file, where you can choose "Open with..." to select what application to open this file with, then, just below, notice the "Change All" button, which, when clicked, will change every file type like the selection to work with the chosen app in the future.
You really should consider using Preview fro PDF's unless you need Acrobat advanded features - it's nicer/faster etc.
    8) I have a hot swap / Firewire drive. For some reason it won't show up unless I physically unplug it and then plug it back in. Is there an "update" that will update all drives and scan for connected drives?
Best way to deal with this is to make an alias (aka shortcut). While the drive is mounted, highlight it in the Finder and press Command-L
You can also add it (or the alias) to the sidebar, just like the download manager.
Both options let you click to mount the drive, which is handy to allow you to unmount it when you don't need it.

    Hi CHIU4,
I use both DSL and dial-up, after switching to DSL, it erased all my dial-up configurations, how do I set it up again?
Connect the dial up connector to your computer. Open Internet Connect.app in the directory Applications > Utilities, click on internal modem and then configure it for your ISP.
Do you know any applications that can display a weather menu on top?
Konfabulator is probably your best bet. It can do a lot more than weather aswell. Check out the link.
Sorry but I don't know about the others

  • FIOS TV/DVR beginner questions

I'm a long time Dish subscriber that is considering switching after 10 years to FIOS TV, but after looking around at other forums, reading the scant info that I can find on the various Verizon sites, and reading the Motorola 7200 DVR manual - I still have a bunch of questions that I'm hoping some of you could answer so that myself and others can make an informed decision.  I've got the FIOS internet and am very happy with the 20/5 service - its solid as a rock and fast as greased lightning.
Signal My Dish HD is quite compressed, and prone to lots of pixelation, yellow screens, and audio drops - and also free of charge you get a loud pop whenever the channel changes from SD to HD signal, along with the unavoidable volume differences between stereo and Dolby 5.1 audio when the signal goes HD to SD.  I'm aware that most reviews indicate that the FIOS HD picture quality is hard to beat, but I'm wondering about the various audio and video problems and whether to expect a couple of dozen instances per hour show like I tolerage now on Dish?  A great picture most of the time can still be ruined by a bunch of audio drops or 5 seconds of yellow screen every half hour.  Does internet computer usage deteriorate the FIOS TV signal if you have a couple of computer users on-line while viewing or recording TV?
Content   Dish has a 100 HD channels, FIOS in my area (Portland) has around 100 HD channels, with over 90% overlap.  Dish has NBAtv, Fox Sports HD, CBC-college, and ESPNWS while FIOS has Big 10, ESPNU, and more of the movie channels in HD.  The big difference seems to be VOD, but I can't find any comprehensive info on it.  The Verizon website boasts of 11,000 monthly titles (8500 free), but you have to have some sort of user password to see the VOD choices on-line.  I don't get the "monthly" thing either, seems like it would just be a growing VOD library that accumulates more titles, but the monthly thing makes it sound like some stuff disappears from VOD over time. Does the free VOD includes the recent movies, etc. or is all that stuff Pay per View and the free stuff is all kickboxing and fishing shows?  Does anyone have a way for a non-FIOS TV subscriber to get a look at the list?  The Verizon site just shows you a couple of titles and doesn't say whether they are free or PPV so it is hard to figure out whether VOD is something that I would use or not.
DVR's  I currently have a 60 hour HD triple tuner ( 2 SAT, one OTA) Dish DVR (722) that I think is considered one of the better ones available.  Besides the large hard drive, the unit also has a USB port that you can hang another 500G external hard drive off of after a $35 activation fee.  I understand that FIOS is not allowed to do the same thing with their DVR's because of the copyright issues with the content being carried over wires instead of beamed from a satellite, although some things I read indicated that it still may be something they enable at some point.  The other big difference is that the Dish DVR has all the outputs "hot" at the same time - meaning you can drive a bunch of TV's, SD and HD, simultaneously.  I drive one SD signal 300 feet and a second HD signal 100 feet.  I know the Motorola units that FIOS leases can only output one port at a time.
I read through the manual for the HD DVR (Motorola 7200)  but Verizon lists the same manual for the "Home Media" DVR (Motorola 7216) so I can't tell what the real differences are between the DVR offerings.
In order to watch recorded or live shows on more than one TV - do you have to have a box (STB) per TV, whether using the Home Media DVR or the regular HD DVR?
Is the VOD content only available via the Home Media DVR, not the regular DVR?  Is the only other main difference between DVRs the remote DVR functionality (internet programming)?  I know there are some other multi-media things, pictures and music, but I'm focusing on TV.  I don't get how FIOS can call the Home Media DVR "multi-room" if you still need a STB for other TV's, isn't that the same whether using a regular DVR or the Home Media DVR?  Does anyone have a link to the actual 7216 manual?
How easy is it to change the output port?  Is it a quick software change?  My thinking is that if I hooked up a TV to HDMI, another to component, and maybe one to SD - how clunky is it to switch the output so that someone could watch TV1,2 or 3 (one at a time, of course).  I'm also assuming that the audio ports will all work simultaneously so that one could send the video to HDMI, for example, and the audio to a receiver.  So I think its only the video that is limited to a single output.
Does either DVR have an Over the Air digital antenna input?
Is the remote control RF or IR?  Does it have the all important 30 second Forward skip button and 10 second Back skip button?
How long is the guide, a week, 2 weeks, etc?
I couldn't find much in either the manuals or the verizon website about the Interactive Media Guide.  Is the VOD included in search functions?  Are there TIVO like "season passes" and the ability to find and record new episodes of a show, etc.?
Are there any good reviews of the DVRs, the Interactive Media Guide, or something with more detail than Verizon's sketchy descriptions or the lousy 7200 manual?
I realize a lot of my DVR questions could be answered by proper documentation on the 7216 and the Interactive Media guide, so if someone has a link to detailed info on these items, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks for any help you can provide.  I've spent a lot of time and effort getting my Dish system all figured out and the way I like it, but the quality issues and cost have me exploring options.

Does FIOS internet usage affect FIOS TV signal quality? (I have 20/5 service).  Negative.  The FiOS signal itself is only affected by physical damage and or equipment failure on our network equipment.  Now if you you are talking inside of your house signal(there is a difference).  VOD on FiOS is a strictly data service and is very bandwidth intensive due to the large size of the file itself.  That is why we recommend you only watch one HDVOD at a time as the MOCA network in your house can't really handle two running at the same time with 100% QoS. So if I understand you correctly, VOD could be affected by heavy home network useage (or simultaneous VOD requests) but DVR recordings or live TVnot, or just less likely? That is correct.  VOD services can be affected by heavy home data network useage.  The live TV and subsequent recordings made of the liveTV to a DVR will not be affected by heavy home network useage.
Are there any futher plans for external hard drives and/or the HD DVR's to talk with each other?  My manager has informed we are actively researching a solution to this problem.  When or if anything will come of the research has yet to be seen.
How hard is it to switch outputs on the DVR (I'm assuming it is a software menu change)?  Could it be programmed into a learning remote (keystroke macro) so that you hit one button for TV1, another for TV2, etc.?  Last time i checked this was IMG 1.3.  At that time all of the outputs were consistently on.  There is no switching the output like there is switching a tuner on a TiVO.  When i tested this in my video lab i hooked up a QIP6416 via HDMI and Component.  Each output would show the same channel on either input ont the TV.  Each output will only display whatever channel you have the STB currently tuned to.  If this is not what you mean feel free to correct me. That is what I mean, my current config is one DVR hooked to SD TV1 via cable, HD TV2 via HDMI, and HD TV3 via component - and all three get signal simultaneously.  I was told by a FIOS tech that only one output is "hot" at a time on the FIOS DVR.  I understand that you can't watch channel X on TV1 and channel Y on TV2 simultaneously, but I'm wondering if you can watch channel X on TV1,2, etc.  I went and tested on our QIP6416 model and unfortunatly you cannot only one output is 'hot" at this stage of IMG releases. From the looks of it the outputs are in a heirarchy hdmi ->component->s-video->composite->RF.
Can the IR remotes be programmed to run just DVR1 or just DVR2 if you put two in the same room (i.e. different code set for remote 1 and remote 2)? I note about 4 different remotes shown on the FIOS website, does the HD DVR have RF capability or will only IR remotes work with it?  No the FiOS remotes are pre-programmed to work on every single FiOS STB.  You could take your FiOS remote to another FiOS user's home and control their STB.  Makes for some interesting fun. But it is all IR, right?  The DVR's won't accept an RF remote signal?  It is all IR.
Can channels be locked out on the guide so you don't see them, both adult and ones that you just aren't interested in? If you can lock them out of the guide, does that mean they won't show up in searches as well?  There is currently no way to remove channels from the normal guide.  We used to support this feature with our old guide produced by microsoft but the feature was left out of IMG.  We have given the option for customers to setup multiple channel lists in guide format under the favorites option.  You can set the guide button to pull up the first of those lists instead of the guide itself.  You can lock the channels out but the titles will still be readable by anyone looking.
The "Welcome kit" PDF talks about being able to resolve timer conflicts for series, but I assume you can also assign priority to one time events and/or access a general recording schedule where you can manually resolve conflicts as well.  Is that correct?  Does the recording automatically pad sporting events with extra time on the end or do you have to set that up manually with each sporting event?  Yes our recording schedule does will recognize recording conflicts.  There will be a marker on the program in the guide informing you of a recording problem.  There is also a section in the menu of the dvr that will show you the entire recording schedule with any conflicts.  Yes you can set priority to whatever you want.  No we do not pad for sporting events.  That is something you will have do manually.  Unfortunatly i do not see this changing anytime soon as it appears to be a limitation of our current guide data producer.
No OTA tuner in any FIOS DVR, correct?  Correct.
The VOD descriptions say movies are "rented for 24 hours", but on the VOD list it shows a lot of older movies for free on top of the TV series, sporting events, etc..  Are these all just previews or is there a good inventory of free movies?  In all honesty the free VOD movie selections are pretty limited and most of them are independent flicks or trailers.  As soon as our HD on demand library is at an acceptable volume i believe we will be working in improving this aspect of VOD.  The subscription based movie packages is where it is at though.  The movie packages have pretty sizeable libraries that you get access to for free with the packages.  Personally, i am partial to the Showtime on demand library(lots of good series).  Please keep in mind though that our VOD library will change very frequently.  VOD content is provided to us by the network that wishes to put it up.  They can also will us to take it down as well.
I'll probably think of a few more, but that's it for now.

  • Question on fixed asset reports

    Hello all,
I work in the real estate accounting department of a large retailer. At quarter/year end we are required to prepare a set of workpapers to support the fixed asset ledger and related P&L accounts. Currently, we are using the following reports:
    To support asset account activity:
S_ALR_87011967 – Asset balances by site
    S_ALR_87012050 – Asset acquisitions
    S_ALR_87012052 – Asset retirements
    S_ALR_87012054 – Intracompany asset transfers
    To support P&L account activity:
    FBL3N – G/L account line items
The problem we are running into is that, for example, impairment losses are processed by retiring all the assets of the company and reacquiring them at the new fair market value. The net difference is the loss on impairment. Unfortunately, it shows up in our reports as a very large retirement followed by a very large acquisition. These need to be netted together on our schedules for the auditors. The problem right now is that we don’t have a good detail report to find impairment retirements/acquisitions, for when we select “list assets” in the retirements or acquisitions report it gives a hierarchical style report, which is almost impossible to export and process in Excel.
So, my question is really twofold. Firstly, is it possible to turn off the hierarchical setting of a retirements or acquisition report when “list assets” is selected? Ideally, I'd like to see all the same data on a single row.
Secondly, my real dream report would be more of a standard general ledger with a beginning balance, activity, and ending balance for the period that I could use for all my balance sheet and P&L accounts. I’ve tried using the FBL3N report for the balance sheet accounts and it works okay, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to get it to show the transaction types from the fixed asset ledger. I read something in another post that talked about using the BWASL field to show the transaction types, but I wasn’t able to locate it in the available fields list. Do I need to do something special when I run the report?
    Thank you so much!

    Hi Andreas,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
I thought a custom query would probably be best. I'll need to request access to the transaction before I can try it out, but I'm sure I'll have a bunch more questions to bug you with when I do!
    Thanks again,
    William

  • Post-Kernel Panic: Various questions on iTunes, mail, stability, help!

I recently experienced a Kernel Panic on my Macbook Pro from late 2010 (2.53 ghz, 4 gb ram, 500 gb OS X snow leopard etc).
First, a quick overview of the Kernel Panic process:
I had a lot of stuff running simultaneously, and the system started hanging for several minutes. I then made a manual shutdown by pressing the power button, and when I started it up again, I entered the wonderful realm of Kernel Panic.
Extended hardware test found nothing wrong.
Disk Utility told me there were a corrupt sibling file, as well as about three corrupt record files (I think they were called that - it looked pretty generic, but unfortunately I didn't write anything down).
I couldn't start in safe mode, a PRAM boot didn't do anything, nothing worked. I couldn't reinstall OS X, as I got a message saying there couldn't be written to my harddisk.
I didn't have any Time Machine backup, so a very friendly collague of mine took my MPB apart, and in short transferred the contents of my harddisk onto an external harddisk. I then formatted my harddrive, reinstalled OS X, and am now in the process of putting everything back in place, as well as I can. But I have a bunch of questions and observations I'm a little worried about, and I very much hope someone can help me.
It must be mentioned that I haven't taken the MBP online again yet; I am currently still at work and am not able to get my Mac online on the work network (it's locked). Therefore there are some OS X updates I haven't reinstalled yet.
    - I have managed to rebuild all my subfolders in the default Mail program; however, my Inbox is nowhere to be found on the external harddrive, and I can't seem to find the location of my new inbox anywhere. Is it eternally lost, or can I restore it? My extemely important mails are saved (software licenses etc), but there were quite a few mails in my inbox that are important as well and i'd like to get them back.
    - ITunes seem to have some issues with handling the import of my entire music/podcast archive (about 120 GB). If I select more than approx. 15 gb to import, it starts hanging, and I have to force quit it and retry with a smaller chunk. Is this normal, or should I be worried?
Note: I did notice that a couple of the folders in the salvaged iTunes archive were completely empty - there's only a picture of a blank piece of paper next to it, instead of a folder icon, and the size is 0 kb. I can just re-rip the music to my library, but I am a little suspicious of this.
    - More iTunes. One of the times I force-quit it and then tried to reopen it, I got an error message saying that I couldn't open the iTunes application, because the files were locked, or the archives were locked, or something along those lines. I got quite a scare, but after restarting the mac, iTunes opened as it should. Again, should I be worried? Is this normal?
    - I am considering getting a new harddisk for the MBP, a Seagate Momentus XT 500 gb, as I am a little wary of the default harddisk after this. I figure that since I haven't put anything back in place yet, it would be the same if I had to format and reinstall OS X once more. The damage has already been done, so to speak. Would this be a good idea, or is it unneccessary? (I have ordered a RAM upgrade, so i'll be running with 8gb instead of the default 4).
    - Why did this Kernel Panic happen? I know I made a force shutdown, but why did it go so wrong? I would like to know what caused it, so I can prevent it. Couldn't it handle the extensive simultaneous processes I was putting it through (my gargantuan iTunes library was running, I was watching a video, had many tabs open in Chrome, it was hot etc)? Will the planned RAM upgrade fix the issue? Is there something fishy about my harddrive?
I hope someone will take the time to answer my many questions, and I am very grateful for any help.

The most important thing for you to learn from the experience is that you'll inevitably lose all your data if you don't make backups. Regard that as a certainty, not a risk. Do no more work with the computer until you have a backup solution in place.
The second point is that your hard drive has failed and you shouldn't continue to use it. Shut down the computer now and don't start it again until the drive has been replaced.
For future reference, familiarize yourself with FireWire target mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
This mode can be used to access the internal storage device of a Mac without booting it.
Some of your files have apparently been lost or corrupted. If you don't have backups, they're almost certainly gone forever. It's possible to attempt data recovery on a failed drive, but the more you use it, the less the chance of success. I have no experience in this area.
As for why the kernel panic happened, that's impossible to say without a panic log, but it was most likely caused by the drive failure.

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    1. I want to replace the Optical drive with a 2TB SATA. can I use this 2.5 inch?
I do not know if it is the same model number, but this one will work in your MBP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SEAGATE%20OWC/ST2000LM003M/
    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • MenuStrip and a Question about Class win32_product

    Hello,
I have a bunch of questions I'm hoping someone can answer.
1.) I would like to add a menu separator and a checkbox under a dropdownitem for a toolstripmenuitem
Similar to what you would see in ISE or Internet Explorer.
I then need to pass the state of this checkbox into a function
2.) I have created a file menu item and would like to create a separator and then add a list of MRU items restricted to only displaying the five previous opened config files.
3.) Can someone propose an alternative to using the get-wmiobject win32_Product class
The below function I wrote to get the Product Version for some VMware products, but it is slow making the initial connection.   Looking at the Uninstall registry key won't work because it doesn't contain the product version.
I know it looks odd.  I could not find a good way to detect which servers the products were installed on.   So instead I pass the servers that would host these products based on our build standards.
    Function get-version($vcenter,$sso,$vum,$credentials) {
Write-Host "Getting Version information. This usually takes awhile. Be Patient " -NoNewline
$Roles = "VMware vCenter Server","VMware vCenter Inventory Service","VMware vSphere Web Client","vCenter Single Sign On","VMware vSphere Update Manager","vSphere Syslog Collector"
    $i = 0
    $output = @()
    $Servers = "$vcenter","$vcenter","$vcenter","$sso","$vum","$vum"
    $ErrorActionPreference = 'silentlycontinue'
    ForEach ($input in $Servers) {
    IF ($psversiontable.psversion.major -ge 3) { Write-Progress -activity "Getting Version Information - Takes awhile. Be Patient." -status $Roles[$i] -PercentComplete (($i / $roles.Length) * 100) } Else { ticker }
    $object = New-Object PSObject
    $object | Add-Member NoteProperty "Role" $Roles[$i]
    $object | Add-Member NoteProperty "Hostname" $Servers[$i]
    $object | Add-Member NoteProperty "IP Address" (Get-WmiObject Win32_networkadapterconfiguration -ComputerName $Servers[$i] -Credential $credentials | ? {$_.IPEnabled} | Select-Object IPaddress).IPaddress[0]
    $object | Add-Member NoteProperty "Version" (Get-WmiObject win32_Product -ComputerName $Servers[$i] -Credential $credentials | Where-Object {$_.Name -eq $Roles[$i]}).version
    $output += $object
    $i++
    IF ($PSVersionTable.PSVersion.Major -ge 3) { Write-Progress -activity "Completed Getting Version Information" -Completed } Else { write-host "...Done!" -NoNewline }
    write-host ""
    $output
    } # End Function get-Version
    Walter

Your code doesn't relay make much sense.
    What is this line for:
    $Servers = "$vcenter","$vcenter","$vcenter","$sso","$vum","$vum"
    Funtion get-version($vcenter,$sso,$vum,$credentials
Why are you using credentials.  Only and admin can call remotely?
Are you trying to get all of these roles? Aren't these produces?
    $Roles  = "VMware vCenter Server","VMware vCenter Inventory Service","VMware vSphere Web Client","vCenter Single Sign On","VMware
    vSphere Update Manager","vSphere Syslog Collector"
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Merry Christmas: Beginners Guide to the Basicest Questions

Merry Christmas Everyone..im sure everyone's got a bunch of questions about thier new iPod ( there's a new thread every 5 secs about adding/removing songs) This is bascially a retelling of a thing called the MANUAL
concept of the " hold" switch
-it is located on the top of the iPod
-when it is showing the red part, that means all the buttons are disabled
-when it is showing the white part, that means all buttons are functional
-this is used to prevent accidentally pressing a button on the iPod
    Turning it on and off:
to turn on: press any button
to turn it off: hold the play (>) button untill the screen turns off
-notice- the click wheel may still click after it's off, don't worry, the iPod IS off
-to prevent accidentally turning the iPod on, move the hold switch to show the red
To add a song from CD:
    1: insert CD
2:on the top-right, press "burn disk"
3: let the songs be added to the iTunes library (this step is automatic)
4:assuming software has been installed, attach iPod
5: iPod icon in the source list (left side) will appear
6: the mp3's from the library should automatically sync with the iPod(all the music in the library will be copied unto the ipod)
7:press the eject button next to the iPod's icon and disconnect the iPod
    8: listen to the music!
    To remove a song:
    1: go to the library
    2:select song to be deleted
3: right click ( control - click on a one button mouse in mac)
    4: select clear
to fast forward a song in the iPod, go to "now playing" (shows up if you're playing a song) and press the center button until you get to a bar with a diamond. Use the scroll wheel to choose where to fast forward or rewind ( this is also applicable with videos)
-the thing to remember (if you selected the iPod to autosync with your library) is that anything in the library is what will be in the iPod-
    video part coming soon...
if there's any inconsistensies to fix or anything you want to add, go ahead

-lastly, please, don't overcomplicate yourself, the answer to your question may be REALLY, REALLY basic-

Please help...this is going to sound so stupid:) But here goes---I just got my first IPOD--30GB. I'm so excited but trying to use the extras is a bit frustrating. I really did try to read how to use this but I am uncertain. Is there the calendar option through ICAL or is it through ITunes? Hope you can help. Also the contact option. I think it is just a matter of someone telling me a few things and then I think I will be fine. Thanks for any help you can give. Loved finding this site...it really is helpful to know others struggle also.

  • Hard drive failure! New hard drive/Time machine backup/iPhone questions

    Hello,
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro who's hard drive failed (rather acutely too, I do use disk utility to check it's health regularly) and I bought a replacement to install (SSD!). I have a bunch of questions but have only found partial answers in searches. Maybe it's best to list them:
    1. I'd like to do a fresh install of the OS X using OS X Recovery because I'm concerned my Time Machine backup is partly corrupted. I hadn't updated to Mavericks, will I be able to install Mountain Lion? If not: will this be a problem with my backup files?
    2. Say the OS X Recovery works, how do I use Time Machine to restore things like my iTunes library/iMessages/email/iPhoto library etc? In other words: just the data I can't get any other way (I hope it's not too corrupted). And/or should I use my iCloud backup on a few of these (iMessages/contacts)?
    3. Do I need to set up the new OS X install with the same account names/home disk name etc. for the restored backup files to function?
    4. Is this going to f'up iCloud or vice versa?
    5. Finally, how do I sync my iPhone to the "new" computer without erasing the iPhone (which had an iOS update since my last backup to Time Machine). Or do I have to restore the iPhone too.
    6. How come Apple doesn't have a mobile theme for their website yet?
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Matt

Do you still have the original System Reinstall DVD set that came with your Mac?
If you created that Lion external drive you have from YOUR Mac, when Lion was installed on it, and it also contains a Recovery HD partition you can use that to boot to the Recovery HD and reinstall Lion on the new drive. And or Clone that external to the new internal drive you installed.
Right since your Mac came with Snow Leopard you can't use the Online Internet Recovery system to reinstall Lion, as your system didn't originally come with Lion, but you should still be able to boot to it to do diagnosic things like using Disk Utility, going to the Net to get help and even Restoring the system from a Time Machine backup. But you will get an error if you select Reinstall Mac OS X. The firmware update is usually applied with system updates.
If you created a New Time Machine Backup when any of the Download Only version of OS X were installed on your internal drive Time Machine, the system, Copies over the files needed to boot the system from that backup drive. If it was a care over backup from when Snow Leopard was installed is might or might not be bootable. Only way to tell is to connect it and at startup hold down the Option key to get the Boot selection screen, IE The Boot Manager screen, and see if it shows up as a Boot Source. If it does thenn it contains the files needed to get to the Mac OS X Utilities, IE the Recovery HD files.
What you should do is Boot the system from either the Time Machine backup, if it is bootable, or your External that has Lion on it, The Recovery HD if that drive contains a Recovery HD, or your Original Snow Leopard reinstall DVD that came with your Mac and then try to Restore from your Time Machine backup drive.
If that fails to restore your system properly then nyou should reinstall Snow Leopard and the iLife Apps from the Original Discs then upgrade to Mt Lion which will be in the Mac App Store under your Purchases area. Then maybe you can restore your files from that Time Machine backup.

I've had a bunch of issues with my computer (you can look at some of my other questions on these forums) which, to my mind anyway, seemed to be finally given a diagnosis when my HD crashed. It may be paranoia but there have been enough problems that I'd rather do a clean install to be on the safe side.
I have an early 2011, shipped with Snow Leopard.
I was under the impression that Time Machine can't be used as a boot drive and the OS X Recovery is a firmware update (on my computer) or hard wired in (on later computers).  I might be wrong. I was planning on using the internet recovery, the HD failed right after I got some password protected files unencrypted and onto an external drive (was that necessary?) but wasn't sure if it's a problem if it installs Mavericks.
So Setup Assistant will configure my accounts the same and I don't need to worry about that? That's a relief.
    Thanks for the lengthy response.
