A little something.

i have a week 32 white macbook. i love it. everything is GREAT! :] but one minor thing....that's kinda annoying. this is most visible in a totally dark room.
anyways, when im in a dark room i look at the bottom of my display where the text "MacBook" is displayed and i see a "line of light" from the display that goes across 1/3 of the bottom of the display.
kinda hard to explain....but if someone could tell me if they have this with their WHITE macbooks it would be great. also, are you/would you do anything about it?
thanks-
mark :]

thank you eythandamico for your help! i will definitely visit the apple store for this issue! you've solved my issue....unlike mr.tomtommac whatever, the ******* who thought he was everything, said that a simple solution would be to keep the lights on or close my eyes! ha. what a loser.
ok sorry for that but thanks!

  • Just a little something I found out

    While designing a book, you can actually angle the photo without having to angle the source. Move the mouse the bottom right or top left toggle button and it changes to the hand. Move it slightly out and it changes to crosshairs. Click and hold the mouse button and you can now angle the shots.
    Not sure if this is covered in the manual or not (haven't quite got thru it yet) but hey I thought it was neat for some variety.
    Enjoy.

    This is very cool, a feature I really was hoping to
    see.
    However, I am having a LOT of trouble getting it to
    work - my cursor doesn't change as you describe. I
    did manage to get the rotation to happen once, but I
    can't seem to do it again, my cursor blinks for a
    brief moment and then returns to a normal pointer, I
    never get the hand or crosshairs no matter what I do.
    It's weird - any idea what might be going wrong?
    I didn't know about this either for the longest time until I read someones post - the way I found to get it most conisstantly is start at a corner, then keep moving slowly diagonally away until you see the crosshair. It's a longer distance away from the actual image than you would expect.
    Also on my computer the cursor does not always change to a crosshair - but it still works. So if you see the cursor flickering a bit away from the edges of the photo from the corner, try clicking and dagging.
    The reason I said to try moving diagonally away from a corner is that the rotation zone seems to be something like a small square where one corner just touches the corner of the photo itself. The edges themselves do not seem to offer rotation zones.

  • Just a little something

    hi all,
    in my LOV's (6i) i notice that my column headings are not in alignment with column values. Is there a reason for this.... have i missed something in the wizard ?
    Thanks,
    N.

    You must be using numeric columns. Numbers are right justified, while the column headings are left-justified. Set the column width just wide enough to display the largest number possible, and add spaces in front of the column title to slide the text to the right.

  • A little something for my troubles...

    Alright so i bought an ipod about a month ago, brand new 20gb, i expected an iPod photo, i got a 3rd gen, no big deal there, so i plug it in, nada, the thing didnt work, so i send it back to apple, they replace it, still monochrome still no big deal, so ive had this one like 2 weeks and now it wont hold a charge and is finnicky with my comp and charger, so i gotta send it back too. now i'm a pretty reasonable guy but this is rediculous, so i was thinkin they should upgrade me to a color iPod or something, not too much to ask, so how should i go about talkin to someone to get this done.

    Why don't you call apple and explain your experience and see if you can work something out with getting at least a refurbished color or something along those lines, especially since the iPod you bought a month ago is no longer manufactured...

I did however go to Google Maps and set up a Nav Trip and it ask if i wanted to Use Google or VZ Navigator when i tapped on it that's when it popped up this: So even though at first i may of said it might be free i didn't think it was. I'm human.. i make Mistakes an we all do once in a while but next time i post i will do more research ok And to me i still like Google for it's FREE Navigation b33

  • I am not understanding something...

    Well, actually there are many things I don't understand. Like, for example, how my fellow american citizens can be stupid enough to sign up for another four years of...oh, never mind, what's the point?
    What's really bothering me at the moment is this "feature", which I have been completely incapable of implementing successfully. It seems simple, which is exactly why I am annoyed by my continued failure to do it properly.
    All I want (ok, not ALL I want, but certainly something I want) is to have a real-time list of data automatically keep itself scrolled to the most current entry. You know, kind of like you'd expect it to do in any reasonable gui, right?
    I figured, no problem. A JList inside a JScrollPane. Then a function to add data to the JList and max out the vertical scrollbar. Launch n+1 threads which all reference the "parent" object in order to update the list.
    Well, even before implementing this, I knew there was a small problem. For the "classic" feel, the list should only autoscroll if you aren't using the list at the time - like scrolling up or looking at some other section of the list. But, one thing at a time.
    Immediate problem. It doesn't work as expected. Much of the time, the scrollbar doesn't go all the way to the bottom, but instead stays just above the last one or two lines.
    Another problem. Sometimes the list just flat out goes BLANK - no scrollbar, no nothing. It only comes back when something else is added to the list.
    Knowing a little something about Swing, I figured it was possible the add-to-list command wasn't finishing in time for the autoscroll command to do it's job properly. In other words, the scrollbar was maxing out, then the items were appearing in the list. So I used SwingUtilities.invokeLater() in an attempt to "delay" the scrolling.
    No luck. It might have had some effect, but not enough. I tried putting a sleep timer in the invokeLater(), but that just paused my whole application.
    I'd be happy to provide code etc if anyone cares (originally posted at http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=579946 but tweaked since then), but what I really want is a solution. I.E. I'm not sure I'm even going about this problem in the right way, which is why I defined it in such general terms up above. If it can/should be done without a JList or JScrollPane, that's fine.

    Immediate problem. It doesn't work as expected. Much
    of the time, the scrollbar doesn't go all the way to

    Of course, setVisibleIndex() or whatever should work.
    Another problem. Sometimes the list just flat out

And that might be coupled with a synchronization problem as well, depending on how you are updating the list model.
    No luck. It might have had some effect, but not
    enough. I tried putting a sleep timer in the

    It seems a common enough feature to want in a gui,
    surely there's a common way of implementing it?There is a "proper" way, which clearly you aren't doing. :-)

  • Little Globe Icon in the top right?

    Hello everyone!  First post on the forums here.  I was wondering a little something about my BB.  I have an 8330 by Sprint and I am connected to BES through my job.  I have a little icon up in the top right of my screen that is kind of boggling my mind!  The icon is actually just beneath my signal strength and it looks like a miniature sized Browser icon with a number 1 beside it.  Does anyone have any idea what this could be?  Any ideas would be helpful!
    Thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    It's the icon indicating that you have a "saved search" at some point in time you opened your browser and saved the page while it was loading..if you go into your messages list you should see it there, giving you the option to delete it and then the icon will disappear.

  • Program not registered - RFC to J2EE (local machine)

    I have a local install of WAS on my laptop using MSSQL 2000. I am trying to integrate local portal into a BI system.
    1. I completed SLD configuration of local J2EE
    2. As part of local SLD config I specified a BW7 system as data supplier
    - entered  BW7 host & gateway
    - kept default settings for "configure data supplier targets" (i.e: sld/active=TRUE)
    3. In Visual composer I successfully triggered SLD data transfer
    4. In Visual Composer I specified a JCo RFC Provider to the BW7 system I want to access.
    5. If I go to BW7 and goto tcode SMGW -> GOTO -> Logged on client, I see 2 pair of entries for JCo RFC provider
    with the following settings
    - system type: Registered Server (REGISTER_TP)
    - state: connected
    - LU name & Host Name = J2EE Host name w/ last 4 characters truncated. Only first 8 characters appear.
    - TP Name: 2 entries = SLD_UC & 2 entries = SLD_NUC. So a total of 4 connections. My understanding is that TP Name is supposed to = Registered Server Program
    6. In BW7, I have an RFC w/ Registered Server Program setting and program ID = JCo RFC Provider program ID
    7. In BW7 RFC & JCo RFC the host & gateway settings are the same, they both refer to the BW7. THIS IS THE PART WHERE I AM UNSURE. I would have thought that the host & gateway settings of BW7 RFC would refer to Local J2EE engine. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE GATEWAY IS FOR LOCAL J2EE.
    8. In BW7 when I try to test the RFC, I get errors:
    - Logon     Connection Error
    - program <...> not registered / CPIC-CALL: 'ThSAPOCMINIT' Tran
    - ERROR: program <...> not registered
    - DETAIL: TP <...> not registered

    - MODULE: gwr3cpic.c
    - RETURN CODE: 679
    - SUBRC: 0
    - RELEASE: 700
    - VERSION: 2
    9. I completed step 1 & 2 of RSPOR_SETUP
    - Step 1 <Create RFC Destination in J2EE engine> messages:
    No Authorization to SMGW
    Profile parameter login/create_sso2_ticket is not set to 2
    Check of RFC destination <...> with RFC_READ_TCPIP_DESTINATION successful
    - Step 2 <Create RFC destination to Portal> messages:
    No Connection
    Option Send SSO tickets not active (see documentation)
    RFC CALL RFC_PING, destination <...> failed with sy-subrc =2
    There a little something missing. Hope u gurus can help, lost a weekend over this.

    Hello,
    we get the same message (program ... not registered, COMPONENT: SAP-Gateway) in sm59, when checking the TCP/IP connection. We got it, after we changed the user name in the Visual Administrator.
    Does anyone know with which tool and where the program can be registered. (The connection has no user name (connection by SAP ticket)).
    Best regards,
    Thomas

  • I can't get it working.

    This should be a no brainer, but it hasn''t turned out that way. I Have a MacBook pro and an airport extreme. I also have a cable modem. With the cable modem plugged in and responding, I followed the setup helper thing and was told I was connected. Great! Let's get a webpage, not connected. All bars are roaring. You are connected. No I am not. Reset the modem for 5 min. and rebooted modem like the assistent told me.
    I try again, no. But LAN yes. I'm a bit tee'd now.
    I reset the Extreme and reset the modem about 5 times total. Following all the correct stepsand on the last one I even read through the manual. Yes, all correct. No weird apple propriety. Even tried stripping down everytyhing and manually adding an 802.11 location. Nothing freakin' works.
    All firmware is up to date.
    Network pane shows connection through the ethernet and I get assigned an IP in the correct locations...10.0.0.blah. Disconect ethernet cable, authenticate my wireless password, and IP changes to generic 169.124.blah. Not router address. Not REALLY connected. Can't print either, meaning the connection never takes place as the nice assistant say's. So I go manual and add everything by myself: that does not work. Everything has been done to this thing with all the correct steps taken with regard to cable modems. I really don't think I am doing anything wrong .... Anyway, I could go on. It doesn't work with the MacBook card.
    This may be a challenging one. Thanks in advance to all you people who respond and help out on the forums. Whenever I am here it always feels great that so many people are out there giving knowledge.
    I guess I am looking more for some thoughts on known bugs with the Macbook airport and wireless systems.
    It makes me laugh (and grimace) that I am a Mac sysadmin at 2 rather large companies. I am not saying that smuggly, just to ask that you try not to respond with basic networking protocol suggestions. I might need a little something more.

    Are you using the access control list on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)? If so, turn it off.
    Open the Network preference pane. Drag AirPort to the top of the list. Better yet, disable Ethernet. Can it connect?
    If that isn't it... the list of possibilities is short. The IP address starting with 169 indicates that it is not properly connecting with the DHCP server on the AEBS. Apparently, reading through your text, you have successfully established the wireless connection with the AEBS it is the communication with the DHCP server that is failing.
    Have you been able to try the MacBook on other wireless networks?
    Did you accidently configure this AEBS to use WDS? If so there is an option that prevents wireless clients from joining.
    If you do have WDS enabled, you should disable it since you aren't wirelessly connecting any other base stations.

  • The end of a beautiful relationship (long)

    I purchased a Sony 4K 49 “TV on Tuesday (11/4/2014) in the Palmdale, CA Best Buy. I was told it would be delivered on Thursday with a confirmation call on Wednesday giving me my delivery time. The call did come Wednesday stating a delivery time between 9-11 am.
    I called at 11:10 asking where was my TV?  The CSR in Kentucky stated my TV was on back order. I eventually asked to speak with the Supervisor who also said the TV was on backorder. I stated how is that possible when the TV was in stock when I purchased it and someone called on Wednesday to state they were delivering it to my house.
    The Supervisor transferred me to the warehouse in Chino, CA where my TV was stored for delivery. The person there also said my TV was backordered. I stated how is that possible? Not only did you guys call me the day before, the Best Buy Website is showing the television available in just about all Southern California Best Buy stores except the Palmdale location. This person did offer me a $50 gift card for the inconvenience but could not commit to a delivery date. I stated I did not want a 50$ gift certificate I wanted my TV, Today.
    The warehouse person eventually transferred me to the Palmdale store. I initially spoke with who I was told was the TV dept. supervisor who again stated that the TV was on backorder and it will be a few more days before I can get my TV. I stated to her that she should be trying to get me my TV that was promised to me, from one of the other Best Buy store locations.  She transferred me to the store manager, Lawrence {Edited per forum guidelines}.
    The store manager repeated what was told to me by other employees. I stated he should be trying to work with me and get me my TV. The best thing he said he could do was make some kind of arrangement with one of the other stores and have it to me in a few days. (No date specified) I said why don’t you get one of your Geek squad trucks and get the TV. He said he could not. I said why you don’t get one of your employees (or him) to drive to one of the stores and get me my TV. He said he could not. (Admittedly this is a problematic solution but one I used when I was a theater manager and one Sports Chalet did for me on their own recommendation).
    I told him he was performing no customer service with me and one of his responses went along the lines of he did not like how I was talking to him. I will grant that my tone was “irate” but it was not belittling. I told him I was the one that discovered this problem, no one from Best Buy called to say my TV was on Back order. No one called from Best Buy to say my TV was not going to be delivered. No one called from Best Buy to say when my TV was going to be delivered.
    Finally I stated that I could just cancel the order and drive to another Best Buy location myself and get the TV there, TODAY. Your manager said I could do that but then I would have two TVs. I said I’ll just cancel the store order from Tuesday. He stated that if I cancel the order I have to come into the store for a receipt. I stated why couldn’t he fax or email the receipt. He said he could not. But he said he would look into it and call me back. I told him that it was ridiculous that I had to come to the store to get my receipt and yet he was doing nothing to get me my TV today.
    After an hour of waiting for a call back, I decided to drive to the store and cancel the order and get my receipt.
    After 15 minutes of waiting in the customer service line with only one person in front of me and four people working the counter I finally got assistance. I told the clerk I need to cancel my order and I need the original documentation back. She was unable to assist me and requested help. She went to the back room and was gone for about 10 minutes. When I asked her what was the problem she stated they had to verify that the TV was not delivered to me . . .
    The very same TV that was on back order. The very same TV that people throughout the Best Buy country stated they could not deliver to me today. The very same TV her store manager said I would have to come in to get a receipt in order to cancel the TV. (Who by the way had still not called me).
    So I waited at the counter. At one point the manager came out of his office and did some paper work at an open desk, close to the customer service counter, but he did not acknowledge me. (Admittedly, he did not introduce himself to me, but I could tell by his demeanor he was the boss). The manager went back to his office and I continued to wait. About 45 minutes later I get a call on my cell. The manager is telling me my receipt is ready. I tell him I am in the store at his customer service desk. He comes out of his office, greets me and then shows me the cancellation receipt. We shake hands and I leave the store. I exited the store at 4:30pm.
    I basically spent my whole day dealing with this issue (9-11, and 11:10 to 4:30)
    Here is a little something about me. I am a recently retired civil service worker. I have been a huge Best Buy advocate over the years. Whenever any family members or friends need tech I always steer them towards Best Buy.  When I go in a store and see merchandise on the floor I will pick it up. When I see a bad customer messing with the merchandise I report it. When people talk about using Best Buy as a display case and getting the merchandise from somewhere online, I always mention how the local Best Buy employs their neighbors who need jobs. Most black Fridays you will either see me in line in the early AM or in the store right when it opens. I would guess that I have spent close to 100K over the years at Best Buy.
    Yes, I was irate. Yes, I was demanding. Yes, I wanted my way.  Yes I was obstinate. However, it was I who discovered this back order problem. I never got a call from you people about a TV re-delivery. Except for the Warehouse person in Chino, I never received any type of empathy for my situation. None of your people looked at me as a human being but some mean guy that wasn’t being reasonable.
    Your customer service model is utterly broken and probably beyond repair.
    Today, I have no compunction about going to one of your stores, looking at the merchandise and going on my cell phone and ordering from Amazon. I think I gave you guys a ton of goodwill over the years and overlooked so many of your slipups. (Selling me a Mac for my mother-in-law with no CD slot, fixing my daughter’s hard drive in Aug only to have it crash in September, telling me my motherboard crashed only to have a tech expert tell me it was the power supply).
    But in this most recent incident, not one person in your chain sympathized with my plight even to the extent that when I came in to cancel the order, they wanted to verify I did not get the TV. And get this when I went on the Best Buy site at around 10:00pm, it said I could do a store pick up in the Pasadena store at 10:30 am.
    So what am I going to do now? I will probably never shop at Best Buy again.
    It’s unreasonable and perhaps even delusional to think I was entitled to some kind of special treatment due to my years of loyalty and support. But if someone from the warehouse would have called me and stated there was a problem with my order, and the TV delivery was going to be delayed, I would be upset but I realize stuff happens. And if someone would have said to me, “Wow, that sucks, let me look into what we can do to make things right.” But alas, that is not even in the mindset of your vast work force.
    Here is something else to consider. The reason I wanted the Sony 49” 4K was because it was a test TV so that my wife could see how great the new TVs are. We are in the market for getting a 70+ incher for the family room. She wants just a big screen, I want to make sure 4K features are part of the discussion.
    As of now, Best Buy will not be in the discussion.

    Good afternoon Dajjer,
    Welcome to the forum, and thank you for being a loyal Best Buy customer as is evident by your Elite Plus status. Buying a new TV is an exciting event, and when my husband and I have decided to purchase one we make sure it's a model we will both enjoy for several years to come. I am very disappointed to read about your recent experience purchasing a new TV. It is certainly understandable that you would be upset after not being notified that it would not be delivered as previously scheduled. It also sounds like no one was very helpful when you called or visited the store, and I sincerely apologize for such a poor customer service experience.
    I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to post your feedback here on the forum. I assure you I will be forwarding your comments to the leadership team for review and further employee training. It is our expectation that each and every one of our customers receive no less than stellar customer service. It is truly disheartening that this experience has caused us to lose you as a valuable Best Buy customer.
    Once again, I am very sorry for any disappointment this has caused. I hope you will reconsider, and give us another opportunity to offer you a much better experience in the near future.

  • Can ayone help with the best way to restore my software function?

    Hi, I'm running OS 10.6.8 on an intel iMac.
    I haven't done a software update for a while, due to poor connection speed, but last night, as the 'net was zipping along nicely for me, I installed all the latest reccommended updates, some via software update, but iTunes I downloaded from the apple download page.
    When all the updates were installed, I restarted the Mac.
    Now a large proportion of my applications, both native and non-apple, will not run.
    I should add that I use firefox, and updated that last night as well.
    I ran disk utility, and verified and repaired permissions. (A lot of repairs needed there!)
    I tried to verify the hard drive, but it showed as needing repair, so I rebooted from my snow leopard install disc and ran the disk utility repair from there, successfully.
    After I restarted in the usual manner, my software still won't run.
    All I get is the "iTunes (or whatever app) quit unexpectedly" box. Hitting reopen from there just gives me the same again.
    Do I need to go back and reinstall everything from scratch? OSX? Just the non-functioning apps?
    The current hard drive is the third in this machine (iMac originially purchased at the start of 07).
    Last time we replaced the drive was about this time last year.
    I restored from time machine  - the last saved back-up from there was from July of last year, as for some reason, time machine had not worked properly in the interim - I think because the drive was too full, or some such.
    Anyway, I was in the process of doing a complete reinstall, update and overhaul after getting the new hard drive.
    We managed to savage some of the data from the old drive, so I was going to replace what files I could into the system, then erase my external hard drive and start time machine fresh. Trouble was, the family (and there's a lot of us) all jumped in and started using the machine before I got through updating everything and I got fed up trying to sort it out. I never started time machine again. I've backed up anything I wanted kept safe on an portable external drive and a couple of USBs. Therefore my more recent data is safe if I need to go back to that time cpsue back-up from last July.
    Not sure about everyone elses. My external drive probably has enough space on it to copy pretty much everything from the main hard drive, but I can't use it via time capsule. It's the wrong format, and I dont want to lose the data I have already copied to it. I could just ignore the fact the others will lose their files, but I'm not that mean spirited, so will try to back up for htem if I can, before I do anything drastic.
    If I have to erase and reinstall, is it possible first to just to copy the whole drive manually to the space on my portable drive, or should I just copy everyone's user files and the cntents of the shared folder?
    I'm not hugely experienced in this, so I'd be grateful for any useful suggestions.
    Thanks, in anticipation.
    ~ Betty.

    Thanks. All your help is really appreciated. I wish I could report a better outcome.
    I gave it a try. Got this:
    while ! curl -C - -O 'http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Appl e_Software_Updates/Mac_OS_X/downloads/041-4966.20110725.gt5tv/MacOSXUpdCombo10. 6 .8.dmg'; do sleep 10; done

    curl: (33) HTTP server doesn't seem to support byte ranges. Cannot resume.
    So, no luck there.
    Sleep is always nice, but I don't find I need it ar 2.28 in the afternoon! I'm in Western Australia, so I'm guessing we're in vastly different time zones.
    I'm currently attempting to get 10.6.7 combo via speed download. Thus far, 1.6% received in around half an hour. CUrrent estimated time remaining approx 33 hours!
    No ethernet cable.
    DSL is not available to me. I'm on a pair gain, so the only way for me to get broadband is via my wireless modem.
    I tried to do network diagnostics when software updated kept failing.
    It's very odd. External modem, which is what I'm using, is greyed out, so I can't select it.
    No point checking the other options. Ethernet just tells me I'm not connected to ethernet or DSL, which I know. Airport wants me to select a network to join. What? I'm connected to the net NOW, via my external wireless modem. Airport is turned on, but that's only so that the other folks in my house, should they choose to do so, can connect their laptops via airport through this machine.
    I've never had a problem with software update until I did the first download of the 10.6.8 combo, following the instllation of which, everything went kablooie.
    I guess I'll just wait however long it takes for this speed download (not speedy, due to my currently restricted to dial-up speed isp account - but at least I can resume if interrupted) of 10.6.7 to finish and see how that goes. It could be another couple of days before I know.
    Failing that, I think my next step is to go to my local Mac expert (shop 30 minutes drive from home) and see what he can suggest. It occurs to me that he may be able to give me the 10.6.8 combo on a disc or USB drive, so I can give it another try before we proceed to costly investigations. He may or may not charge me a little something for copying the .dmg file for me, but I really dont want to have to get into paying his hourly service rate for further work, if I can manage to sort it for myself. The thought of spending more money on this iMac after already replacing the hard drive (TWICE! - we're on HDD #3) holds ittle appeal. The machine is almost 6 years old. I really wish I could afford to upgrade.
    I'll let you know if I have a breakthrough.
    Thanks again.

  • Firefox 17 always opens the tabs that were open the last time I closed it. I do NOT use restore history.

    This has started happening since I upgraded to v.17. I close Firefox either with the Red X or the exit button on the dropdown menu. The next time I open, it displays whatever pages were open when I closed it.
    I have always had Firefox use my Google account as my home page. It will not display.
    It seems to me that in your quest to keep updated (how many this year...?) that you've lost a little something. This is very bad behavior and I'll just stop using FF altogether if it isn't fixed soon.

    Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that there are no hanging Firefox processes left in the task manager.<br />
    It is usually best to use the Exit item in the Firefox or File menu to close Firefox.
    See:
    *"Hang at exit": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs
    *"Firefox hangs when you quit it": https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Firefox+hangs
    You can check for problems with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
    Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    *Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • I need to send this email now!

    My story starts wih me trying to scan a picture from the printer to my computer. The printer scans: Photo to email. After ten minutes a new message window pops up with the scanned picture in it. I tried to copy it and paste it into my other email so that I could send it from there and thats when I started having problems. The computer started freezing up with the rainbow swirl. I tried to just send it from the origanal pop up email window, although it kept buffering and wouldn't let me send it. After at least 9 hours now I still can't send it! My computer is not buffering as much after I restarted it, but it still won't send the email with the picture! The email is in is in my outbox and each time I try to send it it just ends up in my outbox again! I've tried this multiple times already! I tried to just send an email to my iPod that just says: "Hi." ,but that won't work either! I need to send the email by the end of today because the contest ends today! It is for an art contest! Please help! I am only thirteen so if you try to explain and help me please don't try to use complicated words!
    Thank you so much!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    This will take a while to read.
    A very VERY long while.
    That's good, because in the meantime, your computer MIGHT fix itself and the email MIGHT send successfully.
    I know, I know you have this contest deadline...
    I. First things first.
    If there is an adult (parent, grandparent, teacher, nanny, caregiver, or college student) nearby, ask them for help.
    Now.
    Even if they CLAIM to know nothing about computers.
    They probably know a little SOMETHING about computers.
    That might even be helpful.
    Ask them.
    Now.
    II. Second, IF POSSIBLE print this whole message thread before continuing.
    Now.
    WHY?
    At some point you're probably going to turn your computer off, or at least quit the Safari browser app, (the one you're using right now to read this information), and then you won't be able to read these instructions to know what to do next until you turn the computer back on and re-open the Safari browser and return to Apple Support Communities and find this message again.
    If it doesn't print, don't panic.
    If there is another computer or iPad or iPod touch or iPhone or other smartphone nearby, locate this message thread Apple Support Communities in the browser: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4165033?tstart=0
    If not, don't panic. You will probably be able to print later.
    III. So what is the problem?
    A. The 'rainbow swirl' as you call it (I call it a 'beachball'), most often happens when the computer gets really REALLY low on free RAM memory. RAM is the electronic memory chips located inside your computer. Those computer chips lose all their information when the computer power is turned off, IF the information isn't saved onto the hard disk first.
    To make more RAM memory available the first thing is to quit any other running apps that you don't need right now in your system Dock at the bottom of the screen.
    For example, if you have iChat or iMessage running, and Mail, and iTunes, and Safari, and iPhoto and your printer/scanner app, all you really need in order to scan and send your picture is your printer/scanner app, and Mail. So you can 'quit' all the other apps running.
    Command+click-ing (also known as 'right-clicking' if that option is enabled on your mouse or trackpad) on the running App icon in the dock will bring up the option to Quit.
    If the app is open on your screen, Command+Q will 'Quit' any app. If the app asks if you want to save unsaved information, choose 'Yes' to be certain that you're not deleting important information.
    If an app is 'stuck' (spinning rainbow swirly thing), the option MIGHT be available to 'Force Quit'.
    Quit all the other apps you don't need first.
    Do NOT Force Quit any apps just yet.
    B. It's possible that you are (also) very VERY short of hard disk space. That's the mechanical drive inside your computer that stores your Apps and your music and your pictures and emails and lots of other 'computer stuff' important to how your computer runs, magnetically, so you can bring it back later. It is where your apps are stored and your 'stuff' is saved.
    You think you MIGHT be able to erase some files to make more space available, but that's very VERY risky if you don't know what you're doing, so I don't recommend THAT.
    First, see how much free hard disk space you DO have available. Open Finder (the 'face' icon probably located in the system Dock at the lower left corner of your screen, and click on your hard disk drive name in the upper left column. (It's probably called 'Macintosh HD')
    At the very bottom of the Finder window there should be two numbers, one showing some number of items (not important) and another number showing how much hard disk space is available (important!):
    If you have less that 15.00 GB available, you are very short of hard disk space.
    That makes your system run slow or very slow, and can cause 'rainbow swirls' even if everything else is working correctly. We cannot do much about that right now if you're almost out of hard disk space.
    You will need some adult help to decide what could be erased to make more space available.
    If you share the computer with a parent or sibling, it's very risky to start deleting stuff.
    So don't delete anything now.
    C. It's possible that the file size of your scan exceeds the allowable maximum file size your email account can handle and has things all jammed up. On Hotmail.com, for example, the upper limit is 2.0MB (megabytes). Apple Mail (iCloud, .me or .mac) seem not to have that limitation.
    You said it took '10 minutes' to scan your picture. That sounds like your picture is scanned at a very VERY high resolution: 1200 or 2400 or 4800 or even 9600 dpi (dots per inch).
    That's great for working at home and for retouching photographs and for professional artists, but most likely, it is much MUCH too large to email to your contest.
    300dpi is probably a good maximum number for email. Check the contest instructions. They might want some other smaller number like 72dpi (internet web images) or 96dpi (Windows on-screen displays)
    A high dpi number means the scanned image takes up a LOT of space in RAM memory and when stored on your hard disk.
    That also means that it would take a very VERY long time to send that scanned file in email, although 9 hours is probably way WAY longer than it should take.
    D. READ THIS ONLY IF YOU ARE USING A "DIAL-UP TELEPHONE MODEM" to connect to the Internet.
    (Your adult should be able to help you determine this):
    A dial-up connection typically sends and receives information at up to 56Kbits per second.
    Most people have something faster today.
    On my DSL internet account (pardon a bit of technical jargon, it's 3.0Mbit downloading (me downloading a music file from iTunes) and 512Kbit uploading (me sending a picture via email), sending one 2.0MB file can take 5 to 15 minutes. Sending the same 2.0GB file on a 56Kbps dial-up modem could easily take almost 10 times longer, or 50 minutes, up to maybe 2.5 hours. But that's still nowhere close to 9 hours.
    IV. OK. Got it. But my computer is still sitting there with spinning rainbow swirlies, and I have this contest deadline quickly approaching...
    What do I do to SOLVE this problem and get my picture emailed today???
    A. You've 'Quit' every unnecessary application?
    The only ones left should be the printer/scanner app, and Mail.
    Sometimes, that frees enough memory for things to begin working 'normally' again.
    So,while reading all of this, has your spinning rainbow swirly stopped and the computer returned to somewhat 'normal' function?
    YES - Check your Mail, Sent folder to see that your message finally got sent.
    Is your message with the picture in there?
    YES - Great. Problem solved. Have a great day. And next time, don't wait until the last minute to submit contest entries!
    NO? Check Mail, Outbox folder (Outbox is only visible and has a number showing IF there is something in the process of being sent, but not completed yet.)
    Is it in the Outbox?
    YES - It could be 'stuck'. You'll probably have to Force Quit the Mail program. That still MIGHT NOT clear your 'stuck' email with the email provider program though.
    B. Were you able to Force Quit all remaining programs?
    YES - Great. Now it's time to click , Restart.
    That will clear memory and reset things to get ready to try again.
    NO - If Force Quit doesn't work, then it's time for more drastic action:
    C. It's time turn the computer OFF.
    Why?
    Because there's likely other no way available to you to 'fix' what's still 'stuck'.
    WARNING: Turning the computer OFF shuts down EVERYTHING, and throws away ALL unsaved information in all apps that are still running but 'stuck'.
    THAT DOES SOUND DRASTIC!!!
    It is. But you have this contest deadline...
    D. If the adult you have nearby is NOT comfortable with you doing this, then STOP!!!
    You're going to miss your contest deadline.
    It isn't the end of the world.
    You're thirteen.
    There will be other contests and other opportunities.
    You're done until someone who IS comfortable helping you is there with you.
    Sorry.
    E. With your Adult's permission to turn off the computer, and with them standing or sitting next to you, hold down the computer power button for up to 10 seconds, until the computer screen goes black and the computer shuts off completely.
    WHEW!
    Take a deep breath.
    Tell your adult to start breathing again, too.
    (Blue adults passed out on the floor from a lack of oxygen aren't nearly as helpful as breathing ones.)
    V. OK. Now what? I still have this contest deadline and now I have XX minutes less because I've been following your long drawn-out instructions.
    HELP!
    A. Turn the computer back on.
    B. Wait for everything to come back up, and then log back in as you usually do.
    C. If you have a lot of programs set to start automatically, like iMessage or FaceTime or iChat or Safari or Mail...
    Use Command+Q to 'Quit' all of them NOW.
    Why?
    They all take available memory from the two programs you probably REALLY need at this point:
    1. Your printer/scanner and
    2. Mail, and
    3. maybe Safari, if you need to refer to these instructions again. Now you should be able to PRINT them, if you couldn't do that before
    If Safari normally opens with a WHOLE BUNCH (3 or more) of Tabs opening things like Twitter and Facebook and Instagram and Google and...
    Close EVERY open Safari tab except 1.
    D. Next, check to see if your printer/scanner app has saved your previous scan.
    I can't tell you how to do this, because I don't know what software you're running. Sorry.
    E. If you KNOW the filename**, locate your saved scanned image and open it using Preview and refer to the ADDENDUM below
    F. If you DON'T KNOW the filename, try re-opening the printer/scanner app.
    G. If you CAN'T FIND the file in three minutes or less, it's probably quicker to re-scan your picture than to spend more minutes looking for the last scan.
    H. Use your printer/scanner software to scan the file AT 300 dpi
    AND
    I. SAVE THE FILE TO YOUR DESKTOP, because it's MUCH easier and MUCH FASTER to find a new scan at the right resolution saved to your desktop than to 'fix' some huge image saved at the wrong resolution* in some file directory called My Computer/My Documents/My Printer/My Scanner/My Scanner App/2012/Aug/1/jpg/miscellaneous/Image_2952.png
    J. Don't let the scanner program TRY to automatically send it via email again.
    Do it yourself:
    K. Open Mail (assuming it's all set up). If not, open Safari, and navigate to your email site like Yahoo, Hotmail, GMail...)
    L. Select New Message or equivalent
    M. Enter the email address you're sending your contest entry to.
    N. Enter the Subject name the contest rules tell you to use.
    O. Enter all the information you're required to submit for the contest.
    P. NOW, attach the scanned image you just saved
    Q. You saved the scan to the Desktop.
    W. You might need to click Desktop icon in the left column to get the list.
    X. Click on your image filename and click the blue Choose File button to attach it.
    Y. Double-check everything to be certain you've included all the needed information AND your scanned picture.
    Z. Click 'Send'
    Check to be sure the message goes. On my MacBook, I hear the 'jet flyover' sound when mail goes out successfully.
    You can start breathing again.
    (And nearby your Adult helper can too.)
    You're welcome!
    ADDENDUM:
    ** THE "YES, I DO KNOW THE FILENAME AND DID FIND THE FILE AND OPENED IT WITH Preview..." instructions
    THIS is how to 'FIX' your huge picture file scan so it will be smaller, and send faster, and not get 'stuck' because your email account cannot handle a huge file, so 'OK, I'M REALLY DESPERATE HERE', BUT LIKELY TO CAUSE A LOWER-QUALITY IMAGE:
    A. Find the scanned filename in Finder.
    B. Double click on the filename.
    C. That should automatically open the file in Preview.
    D. Select Tools, Adjust Size.
    E. Scroll down to the bottom of the menu and select the Fit Into to largest size image available.
    On my computer it is 1920 x 1280 pixels.
    F. Now set the Resolution to 300 dpi.
    You'll have to type in the numbers.
    G. At the bottom left of the Resulting Size box, you should see two numbers, the 'was   MB' (original scan file size to the right), and the new   KB to the left, in both pixels and KB/MB.
    H. Your goal is to adjust the size to make the new resulting file size listed at the bottom left about 1.0MB or LESS. In my example, I reduced a 5.7MB photograph to 615KB (nearly a 90% reduction in file size, but with some loss of image quality).
    I. Then, click the OK button to make the change.
    J. Now in the top menubar, click File, Save As. That saves your changes, but still keeps the original file unchanged, so you can go back to it and try resizing it again without scanning it again, if you don't like the results.
    K. Now another screen pops up, asking you the name of the file
    L. Add 'resized' to the name of your file, so you know which one is the original and which has been changed.
    M. Notice that there is a slider labeled Quality.  Right now, it is probably about 3/4 of the way to the right.
    Sliding it all the way to the right will increase quality AND increase the file size.
    N. Try moving the slider to the right, and release it to see the change in file size.
    O. Remember, our ultimate goal is a modified scan file SMALLER THAN 2.0MB.
    P. When you're satisifed with the file size and the quality slider, click the blue Save button.
    Q. Now, try emailing the 'filename'-resized image you just saved.

  • Can I use ExtendScript to store info about an Illustrator document externally and recover it later?

    What I want to do is this:
    1. Iterate through all the layers in a document (recursively) and discover each layer's NAME, VISIBLE, and LOCKED properties.
    2. Create an object that contains those properties.
    3. Push the object onto a second array.
    4. Store that second array somewhere, preferably in a file (text?) in the same directory as the AI document.
    5. Load that file at a later date as an object array.
    6. Use the object array to iterate through the illustrator document to conform the current state of that document to the stored states in the array.
    Ideally I would like to be able to store a number of separate states in the same document and refer to them somehow.
    As you may have guessed by now, this is my attempt to make a LayerComps feature for Illustrator that I could use to turn visibilities on and off and then export the result, moving on from one state to the next until all the states I am interested in would be exported. I would settle for being able to do it one at a time.
    I can already do steps 1-3 (shown in blue).
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var docName = doc.name;
    var layerStates = [];
    var layerCount = doc.layers.length;
    var count = 0;
    function addLayers(layerArray) {
            for (var i=0; i<layerArray.length; i++) {
                // create an object representing a layer state
                var o = {};
                o.name = layerArray[i].name;
                o.visible = layerArray[i].visible;
                o.locked = layerArray[i].locked;
                layerStates[count] = o;
                count++;
                // if this layer has layers of its own, iterate through those
                if (layerArray[i].layers.length > 0) {
                        addLayers(layerArray[i].layers);
    addLayers(doc.layers);
    // show that we did something, incomplete though it is
    var s = "";
    for (var i=0; i < layerStates.length; i++) {
            s += layerStates[i].name + ": ";
            s += (layerStates[i].visible ) ? "visible" : "invisible";
            s += ", ";
            s += (layerStates[i].locked ) ? "locked" : "unlocked";
            s += "\n";
    alert(s);
    I don't know if it is possible to export that data as XML or even a text string and save it as a file on the file system for later parsing. Anyone have any thoughts about this? Is it possible?
    Currently I am using a restrictive version of a LayerComps script I created, which iterates through a top layer's sublayers, turning each on and exporting as PDF, then turning it off and moving to the next. This is more convenient than doing it by hand, but it really forces me to compartmentalize all "views" of a document in a way that does not lend it self to efficiency and forces redundant copying of pathItems between layers.
    Thoughts?

    Also good, and thanks again for your help. I wasn't sure if ExtendScript implemented the eval() method, necessary to re-objectify a JSON string, because I can't find it in the documentation, but I do see it used in some examples elsewhere. I've successfully written XML files at this point, and when I get a few minutes I'll work on the reading/modifying/exporting part. In the long run, XML files are easier to read, manipulate and maintain, so I'll probably go that route.
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var docName = doc.name;
    var xml = new XML("<root></root>");
    var layerStates = [];
    var layerCount = doc.layers.length;
    var count = 0;
    function addLayers(layerArray, xmlObj) {
        for (var i=0; i<layerArray.length; i++) {
            // create an object representing a layer state
            var lay = layerArray[i];
            var x = new XML("<layer/>");
            x.@name = lay.name;
            x.@visible = lay.visible;
            x.@locked = lay.locked;
            xmlObj.appendChild(x);
            layerStates[count] = x.toXMLString();
            count++;
            // if this layer has layers of its own, iterate through those
            if (lay.layers.length > 0) {
                addLayers(lay.layers, x);
    addLayers(doc.layers, xml);
    var xmlFile = new File();
    xmlFile.open('w');
    xmlFile.write(xml);
    xmlFile.copy ('C:/Program Files (x86)/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS4/Presets/en_US/Scripts/data.xml');
    xmlFile.close();
    All in all, the documentation for this stuff leaves a little something to be desired. My original question had more to do with how file read and write text streams was handled. The answer was actually much simpler than I anticipated. All this stuff is, once you get a handle on it, but the docs are so stingy on particulars — does it really help us to know about the XML class merely that it "wraps XML into an object" or that XML.attribute(name) "returns a list containing all attribute elements matching the given name"? I finally worked it out for myself that the XML object may be manipulated using dot syntax (x.name, x.@name), but that was certainly not mentioned anywhere.
    Ah, well. The journey is the reward, right?

  • How do I fix the FPS in my platform game?

    Hi everyone! As part of a course in Gamemaking in school, my team created a platformer with a colission-map instead of tiles. This has worked out well for the most part.
    My problem is that we have a loop that updates and draws everything to the screen ( this is in windowed mode by the way ) . The game runs and the gameplay is ok.
    But it runs with different speed depending on the hardware. On my computer everything is slow, but on new computers the objects race back and forth like mad. Furthermore sometimes as the player dies and the level restarts, the player dies on the spot!
    From what I have read this is due to the fact that we haven´t fixed the FPS. But Im at a loss as to how im supposed to fix it. One sollution tells me to use a timer and then place logic inside actionPerforemed, but since I am using a loop inside run() this cant work.
    The program is divided into several classes, but the main logic residen in the class main,java
    public Main(){
              super("Mimic");
              setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
              setVisible(true);
              this.enableEvents(KeyEvent.KEY_PRESSED | MouseEvent.MOUSE_DRAGGED);
              setSize(1280, 720);
              setResizable(false);
              setLocationRelativeTo(null);
              requestFocusInWindow();
              AudioPlayer.loadClip("transform", "sound/transform2.wav");
              AudioPlayer.loadClip("gameover", "sound/gameover.wav");
              AudioPlayer.loadClip("ambient", "sound/test.wav");
              AudioPlayer.loadClip("jump", "sound/jump.wav");
              //Cursor - 1x1px
              Toolkit toolkit = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
              Image transparent = toolkit.getImage("images/empty_pixel.gif");
              Point hotSpot = new Point(0,0);
              Cursor game = toolkit.createCustomCursor(transparent, hotSpot, "transparent");
              setCursor(game);
              createBufferStrategy(3);
              transformationTimer = new Timer(1000, this);
              transformationTimer.setInitialDelay(0);
    geyserTimer = new javax.swing.Timer(1000, new ClockListenerGeyser());
    geyserTimer.start();
              mimicTimerBarBackground = new ImageIcon("images/mimic-bar-bgr.png").getImage();
              mimicTimerBar = new ImageIcon("images/mimic-bar.png").getImage();
              start();
         }//public
    public void start(){
              (new Thread(this)).start();
         }//start
         public void run(){
              avatar = new Avatar();
         //Ambient sound
         //AudioPlayer.play("ambient", true); Musiken avstängd...

    I figure I got to put a timer to fix the FPS somewhere in here, but where?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Regard,
    Gabriel

    Speed should be 'tick' based. The way I do it, with silky smooth results, is to lock the game to a framerate. That part is quite easy, all you do is calculate at what interval you want to update. Say you want 60FPS, it becomes:
    interval = 1000 / 60 (interval = 17ms).
    So if you want 60FPS, you have to update and draw every 17 milliseconds. That sounds like a short time, but for computers it really is not.
    Okay, so you have your game loop. while(true) { update(); render(); }. The body of this loop should execute every 17ms (it won't be that precise, but it will be good enough). It goes a little something like this:
    while(running){
    long measure1 = currentTimeInMillis();
    update();
    render();
    long measure2 = currentTimeInMillis();
    long diff = measure2 - measure1;
    Thread.sleep(17-diff); // sleep until next tick
    }This will have the game ticking at 58-61 FPS, depending on the timing precision of the OS - you'll find that on Linux OSes the framerate is far more steady than on Windows environments for example, in Java at least. Its just the sleep call that is far from precise.
    Now you will want to make movement based on the framerate - the way I do that is to work with float measurements. For movement speed I say 'every tick, move X.X pixels', where I keep the units in increments of 0.5 pixels. This means that moving game entities can go as slow as 0.5 pixels each tick in my games, which is slow enough for most of them. In the end when determining the actual pixel locations, the floats are rounded down to ints.
    I hope that makes some sense.
