A (probably really) dumb question

...but i can't find the answer anywhere: those temporary files that "self-create" everytime i save a document, they have the weird names which start with a ~ and the icon is a "lock" ?
what are they called, so I can look it up in my ID book and find out what their purpose is/how do i get rid of them. thanks btw, i tried looking up "temporary files" and nothing came up

Those are not temporary files that hold the doc info in case the program
crashes. Rather those are there to make sure that if one user has the
file open no one else can open the file. You can safely delete them when
ID isn't open.

My iPad mail is synced to my private email account, which I organise on my iMac. On iPad, I can only see inbox and sent messages folders, not any of the other folders in my email account I have created on my iMac. How do I get iPad to show my other folders? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there.

If you select a mailbox, you should get an Edit button (easier to see in landscape mode). Clicking the button will provide you with check circles for the messages. You also get Delete and Move buttons at the bottom. Check the messages you want to move and then navigate to the mailbox you want to drop them into. I think as long as you can navigate to a mailbox you can move the messages to it.
In the Mac Mail application and probably Outlook on the Windows side, you also setup rules to move messages to specific mailboxes. If the mailboxes are stored on the server, then you can have the sorting done on the server and they should appear that way on the iPad. If your later messages do not show up, you may need to have the iPad app pulled down more messages until they are all showing.

  • This is probably a dumb question, but I can't find an answer. How do I make the text on my calendar larger so I can actually read it when I print it out?

This is probably a dumb question, but I can't find an answer. How do I make the text on my calendar larger so I can actually read it when I print it out? I am using a MacBook.

Press "Command P" and when the Print dialogue box comes up, towards the bottom there is an option allowing you to choose the text size, i.e: small, med, large.
    Hope this helps,

  • This maybe a really dumb question...

I know this maybe a really dumb question but I do need to ask:
-Do I need to buy a new vista to install on my new mac?
(I have a start up one that was included with my previous pc laptop..)
-In terms of partitioning, how should I distribute space?
    Thank you in advance.

    jlee636:
The Boot Camp installation guide is [HERE|http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp>. It should be able to answer questions related to installation. Of course these discussions have several other information on boot camp/ windows. All you need to do is launch a search on them.
-In terms of partitioning, how should I distribute space?
Too many people make a partition very small and then regret having done so. My recommendation is to have a partition of at least 32GB. It is highly dependent on what your will be installing on Windows XP/Vista.
-Do I need to buy a new vista to install on my new mac?(I have a start up one that was included with my previous pc laptop..)
It is more than likely that the Windows disk that came with your previous PC/Laptop is an OEM disk and will only work properly with that particular PC. This is generally the case with Dell, HP, Sony etc. The installation disk in the cases above are usually branded.
For more information on which Windows version(s) work with Boot Camp then please click [HERE|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11889.html].

  • Probably a really dumb question...but so am I

Just bought a brand new iMac (specs below). Old one? Panther (3.10.9), 1 GHz, 2 RAM, 80 GB space)
Keeping the old iMac. A perfectly good machine. Only reason I bought a new one: kind of maxed out regarding my primary use of a computer...home music recording. Just needed more space, power, speed, etc.
Question: Before I call the phone company (our ISP: ATT), want your advice.
Can I just hook up two computers (both iMacs, one old, one new), on the same telephone line (a land line...this would be the only phone line coming into the house), and have them work? Or, would the ISP, the telephone company, charge us more for doing this? Meaning operating two computers on the same line simultaneously. (Forget about wireless here. Don't use it, not sure that I will anytime soon.)
Why couldn't I just plug in the other computer into a phone jack in another room in the house and have it work while the other one, in another room but using the same phone line, is running at the same time? Both simultaneously. (Sure, I'd need a modem for each machine going into the ethernet port.)
As I said, possibly a dumb question. On the other hand, I'm pretty dumb too.
    Thoughts, advice, suggestions? Greatly appreciated.

It's probably connecting to a broadband modem (DSL or ADSL). That device allows you to get the high speed internet going on using the same phone jack in your house, and connects to the computer through an ethernet cable.
"Old school" or dial-up modems are traditionally built into the computer or plug into a USB port, and then use a normal phone cord (same thing other phones in the house use). Aside from being super slow, your line is usually busy and you're unable to make/receive calls when you're online.
I'm guessing you're connecting to a broadband modem (since you mentioned ethernet cable). With that in mind, the answer is yes, you can hook both those computers up so they can be online at the same time. What you need is what's called a router or switch, and they're not very expensive. One line connects to your broadband modem, then you have 3-4 jacks that you can plug additional computers in (so they can all use the connection at once).
If you want to have the machines in different rooms but don't want to run wires everywhere, look for a wi-fi router, which will usually give you a few jacks for connecting computers that don't have wi-fi but will also let you do a wireless internet hookup for your new iMac, the old one (if it has wi-fi), and even iPhones if you have 'em.
Apple has two products that might work for you. The Airport Extreme Base Station has super-fast wifi plus jacks for plugging computers in via ethernet, and even lets you share a printer. http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/ The Time Capsule does all that, and also has a built in hard drive (you can get with a 1TB or 2TB hard drive), which is great for using Time Machine. We've had a Time Capsule since they first came out and love it - super easy to set up, and all the backup stuff just happens without having to worry about it.
    Hope that helps!

  • Really dumb question re Quicktime Pro

    Good morning . .
My Mac is running OS 10.4.9 and I have updated my Quicktime player to 7.3.1.
Purchased Quicktime PRO, registered successfully but still only get Quicktime Player when opening the program. Any suggestions where to find QT Pro? Sorry for the dumb question but thanks for your help.
    Jon

There is no separate QT Pro application. Successfully registering Pro enables Pro features already present in the Player. Items that previosly mentioned Pro should now just list the feature without mentioning Pro.

  • Probably a really dumb question

I do not have Apple TV but I think I need it. Question: Does Apple TV allow you to wirelessly use your connected TV as a monitor? For instance, while I am editing old pictures on my MacBook in iPhoto can I simultaneously display this on my tv so my wife can comment on dates, faces, places, etc of old pictures I am editing the metadata on?
    Thanks
    K

Unfortunately that isn't possible with the current software.

  • Probably a really dumb question, but how...

Hello everyone. I am new to Mac and Logic. I am doing a one-on-one tutorial with an Apple "genius" once a week to try and get up to speed on Logic, but I need to get something sorted out right now. I am producing a podcast for shortwave transmission and the file needs to be in mono. My question is, how do you set the export to mono? I see no options on the bounce menu to export in mono.
    Thanks in advance
    Message was edited by: king-catt

I'm not sitting in front of logic but I think the master fader has a button to change it from stereo to mono. When it is in stereo mode it has 2 interlocked circles. When in mono, it has 1 circle.

  • Probably a really dumb question, but...

How to I upgrade to the newest version of iTunes? For a while, whenever I would open iTunes a box would come up asking if I wanted to upgrade. I always said no, and now that I'm wanting to upgrade the box won't pop up. So can someone tell me where I can go to upgrade? And would you advise upgrading? I have heard some bad things about it but I'm really needing to get some music and with the whole music store being frozen, I pretty much will try anything to get it working again and I noticed that one of the options was to upgrade. Anyway, thanks for any help!

Apple.com, click on itunes and download the latest version. Simple as that.

  • Fusion vs. Parallel vs. Boot Camp for Windows 7. Probably a dumb question.

OK, here is my question. I want to install Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro. The primary reason is to run Excel 2007 for work. Not intensive games or anything like that. Excel for Mac does not always transfer well to Excel users at the office, and I spend double time reformatting, etc. Anyway, I wanted to know do you have to use bootcamp along with Fusion or Parallels Desktop 5 or can I use one of these independently? It looks like on Parallels website that it is independent. Of course bootcamp is free, but I really am tired of waiting for these drivers (Something we all agree on.) If I use Fusion or Parallels, which do you recommend? Again, all I am really doing is running office documents.
    Here are my system specs:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.47f2
    Serial Number (system): WQ937*66D
    Hardware UUID: 84DA3741-0B85-5107-8281-CE2E623D4A6E

    Thanks again for any comments!!

You could handle it in almost any variation you want. With only 2GB of RAM though, the virtual machine will not be very snappy. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably just do boot camp, since it's going to be just as quick to boot with the option key and select windows to do excel stuff, then reboot back to mac when you're done, since it'd be free and give you the best performance.
If you're not too worried about it running slow (1GB for the virtual machine would be pushing my patience to the limits and i wouldn't run it with any less, nor would I take any MORE away from OS X) then you could go with just a virtual machine, no need to boot camp it at all if you didn't want to, just do a normal virtual machine build from within whichever app you chose. So if that speed issue isn't a problem, just to do MS Excel sometimes in a windows environment, I'd just do the virtual machine only, save having to partition the drive at all with boot camp and such.
Now, there's a lot of back and forth on the current versions of parallels and fusion. I spent a week or so with both when each new version was released testing, because I do have a boot camp windows 7 partition and sometimes do it virtually rather than booting into it (but I have 4GB of RAM so it's a little more usable for me). I found that my experiences paralleled a lot of the people out there. Parallels had a bit better graphics response, but fusion for me boots it quicker, and i have no problems at all running anything I want with it. Parallels I had some performance issues outside of the video subsystem that just frustrated me too much. Both have their flavor of a "coherence" or whatever they call it mode, where you could actually not even have the virtual machine "visible", you'd just see your Excel application running on your dock like any native OS X app does. And they both did a good job of that for me (that's actually how I run my Outlook since I really can't stand Entourage).
So any answer will be a "valid" answer, but you're really the only one who can say whats going to be the "right" one for you.
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • 30G IPOD, really dumb question, but I need help.

I have a question, I need to put some files onto my IPOD, and with my old IPOD I just dragged the files onto the IPOD icon on the desktop, but now I don't that icon and not sure how to get files onto my IPOD. Help.
I told you guys this was a dumb issue.

Thanks for the response, but I actually figured it out, pretty simple. The icon does appear on the desktop, just have to enable the disk preference.... I think thats what you meant.
    Thanks again.

  • A really dumb question

I am trying to add a second page to a really simple website. I can't figure out how to link to the second page. If my first page is (for example) http://mysite.com and I make another page (I'm doing this in Dreamweaver) and I call it myinfo and I place it in the mysite.com file where the index.html file is what do I call the link? I tried highlighting the "see next page" and use the properties box and in the "link" box I browsed till I found the "myinfo" file but when I loaded to the web I get the error 404 File not Found. Any help on this Fri. the 13th?
    Thanks.

This is my website http://ourlccm.com/ now I am trying to make pages to link to it. The second page I made in Dreamweaver but I don't know what address to use. Thanks.

  • REALLY dumb question

PLEASE no laughing -- I've been using PSE6 for a year or more and this has NEVER happened to me ... I'm just getting to where I know how to use most of the tools -- and THEN all of a sudden I cannot "click away" from my active layer. I've looked everywhere in my books, help etc for this and can't find it (probably because I'm not looking under the right word) but I hopeSOMEONE is on line who can tell me how I've locked this up.
I have a layer active, with the four little boxes at the corners and always until today, when I was done with that layer, I'd just mouse click away from it and could then work another layer by clicking on it ... NOW the only way I can get away from the active layer is to hold CTRL and click my mouse. What did I do??? And HOW do I undo it????? Thanks to whomever is the guardian angel who answers this :+)

Click on the tiny flyspeck triangle at the far left of the options bar  for the Move tool and choose Reset Tool, then make sure that auto select layer and show bounding box are turned on,

  • Really Really dumb question

I've asked this before but I'm still getting confused.
If I were to buy this, would it come with a monitor? Or just the tower, keyboard, and mouse?
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9384285&type=product&id=1218096181010

Correct, that item is just the tower, mouse and keyboard. Sometimes, in the ad and on-line, we offer "packages". These are "a-la-carte" items (Desktop, Monitor and sometimes a printer) that are bundle priced together.

  • Really dumb question - sorry!

I purchased and downloaded the upgrade to PS 5 extended to my PS 5 edition last night, but now I don't know whether it really installed it correctly or not. How can I tell if I'm running PS 5 or PS 5 extended? Does it tell me that somewhere in the software?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Claudia1806 wrote:
…I bought, downloaded and installed Extended…
If you already had Photoshop 12.x ("CS5"), then the last two steps you mention were unnecessary, redundant, superfluous.    No need to download or install anything, just pay for the new license, which gives you a new serial number.
Photoshop Extended is actually the very same program you already have/had installed, it's actually just the new serial number for Extended that turns on the additional Extended features.
All you have to do is go to the Help menu > Deactivate… to deactivate and erase your old serial number.  Then activate again and put in your new serial number, which instantly gives you the Extended version of the application.
