A sobering historical perspective

Let me say that I am disenchanted with LR.
That said, I began thinking about companies that tried to combine programs. The one that I remember is Microsoft trying to have a single program for Word, Excel and Access. That single program is no more.
I'm struck by how poorly LR does the complete job.
iMatch as one example is easily better as a file management program. RSP is easily a better workflow converting RAW files. Qimage is undeniably the best way to print files.
So where did Adobe come with the idea that one program does all?
Vaughn

Insight,
I agree that it does many things poorly, but won't rehearse all that--all anyone has to do is get acquainted with the seemingly endless posts on one or more aspects of the problems.
In part the level of diaappointment stems from Adobe making the ridiculous claim that it is a one stop, do-it-all, program. That is marketing hype and nothing more. Anyone that is using it that way (at the present time) has very, very simple photographic needs or is a recent Newbie with little or no experience of other applications to be aware of what is missing or what doesn't work yet. Others who either believed that hype or simply hoped it was true are finding out that it really isn't. Unrequited expectations!
Promise? Sure, given time it may become a mature and very effective application. I too hope it does. But, excusing its shortcomings now because it is V1 is trite and meaningless. It should not have been released prematurely.
The only valid NOW measure of it is workflow comparisons using alternative, existing, established image editing and DAM software--not hype or wishful thinking. Bridge 2 is faster. ACR 4 has a more streamlined, faster working GUI, renaming, and kewording feature set. PSCS3+ACR4 ditto. IVMP as a DAM is faster and automatically updates any folder or file changes. Library won't. IdImager is a vastly better full featured DAM. All these will see, load, and allow editing of same-named images with different extensions--an absolute must for working photographers! LR won't do that. Just look at the endless threads on this ridiculous feature of LR! Just a few examples.
But, these are mature apps--or a lot more mature with far more cohesive and complete feature sets and amenable to faster, easier workflow. AND they are the alternatives that LR must be measured against--not promises!
Having said all this, my view is that the image editing and DAM apps one chooses is simply a personal choice, and that can be based on present day performance or hope for the future! To each his own!
But let's don't delude ourselves that LR is ready for serious photographic work-- by established photographers with bring home the daily bread workflow requirements or amateurs with large well established archives. It simply isn't by reasonably objective, relative measures, and that of course is why I am also very disappointed by this 'advanced beta' release that Adobe has called 'V1' Having been part of the beta process, I did not expect V1 to be this weak.

  • InDesign CS5.5 EPUB export not showing cover image in Adobe Digital Editions

I have a document that I am trying to ensure is reflecting the cover image prior to uploading to several EPUB sites like google and Barnes and Noble. I am using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Firefox (EPUBReader) to do the troubleshooting on the document. Calibre shows the cover image Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) does not. Are their any known problems with ADE not reflecting the cover image that I need to be aware of before I continue working on this?
The ADE help says the following:
"Once the items are in your library, there are two ways to view the content of any bookshelf. You can view thumbnails of your items. The thumbnail is the cover page of the item (or just the first page if it doesn't have a cover page). In this view, you see the set of thumbnails and some information about each item (author, title). You can also sort the order in which the items are shown by author, title, date created, number of pages, and so forth."
Here is basic informaiton. I have a cover page in my export to EPUB but ADE will only show the first page. Again Calibre shows the cover page.
    CS 5.5
The project is a book (indb) composed of multiple documents (indd)
Exporting as book as an EPUB
On general tab I am "Use existing image"
I am rasterizing the first image in Indesign via the "Object - Object export options" but I am not selecting that option when on the general tab of the Export to EPUB options. I am chosing a file from my disk. I thought that maybe the file name was too long but I changed the image to "cover.jpg" and reexported it but it still does not work.
Here are the contents of the content.opf file with all the pointers. I have updated the file as I believe you can tell with guides, creation date, etc....
    It passes the SIGIL check.
The image name is Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg. It is 300 dpi and 1650 x 2550. I could also cut in the one that I did for cover.jpg but it only replaces the file name.

I have also been trying to get this cover image to display on PC for NOOK but it appears that everyone is having hits problem too. I have followed some trouble shooting guides and renamed the jpg image, Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg to cover.jpg but that doesn't seem to work either for NOOK.
Any help you can give would be appreciated. I am new to InDesign (I know you probably hate hearing that, but I have gotten so close to being done overcoming all the new user hurdles). I think this is my last one before uploading to the appropriate sites - PS. I got the cover page to show up on the Kindle but not Adobe's own product.
    Thanks

ebookjunkie, I have just used InDesign to publish two very short "books" (.99 cent variety) and started this thread with the first question. Look to Bob for the expert advice. This is neophyte advice from someone moving from publishing a full book using Word to EPUB/Kindle and now using InDesign to publish to EPUB/Kindle.
First ADE is useless. I say this out of frustration of trying to use it to troubleshoot problems and it has so many problems in displaying an EPUB that you spend a lot of time troubleshooting ADE issues rather than EPUB problems. The problems are not limited to but won't display a cover page properly, text wrapping is iffy, Drop caps a problem, bringing over supported items like drop caps, all small caps, etc.... are also issues as best I can tell. Humble opinion is delete off your desktop. I use the following to troubleshoot my EPUB's/Kindle books on my Windows platform; Calibre, Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC and iPhone iTunes for EPUB (Sigil to look for errors); and for Kindle, Kindle previewer and Kindle for the PC. Even after doing this, I just today saw my book a buyer's Android "Reader" and the pictures did not display at all. So it is publish once and test everywhere! Unfortunately, you just can't test all the possible devices and iterations of readers. (I am from IBM and we couldn't do it, so how publishers are supposed to figure it out is beyond me!)
On the absolutely great news end, you will see a lot of problems about placing images on the iPad with a lot of workarounds. They apparently (Apple) have fixed this as my two publications show images nicely now on both the iPhone and iPad with the iTunes bookshelf/reader. They were "microdots" when viewed previously. I did nothing to fix it and was just not going to publish to the iPAd and just tested them a few weeks ago and they display perfectly. So Apple has fixed the problem. If it looks good on the Nook for PC, it should look good on the iPAD/iPhone now as best I can tell.
    Cheers

    Thanks, Muhammed Thameem. S

    Hello,
"Buffer busy waits" is contention for a buffer (representing a specific
version of a database block) within the Buffer Cache. So, in essence
it is block contention and thus it is most likely something to do with
the design of the tables and indexes supporting the application. A
built-in bottleneck. On indexes, it could be the age-old problem of
insertions into an index on a column with a monotonically-ascending
data value (i.e. timestamps or sequence numbers) which tends to cause
contention on the highest leaf node of the index. On tables, it might
have to do with many concurrent insertions into a table in a
freelist-managed tablespace where the table has only one freelist. It
could also be due to a home-grown implementation of sequence-number
generators (i.e. small table with one row, one column in which contains
the "last value" of a sequence, etc) which lots of people use to avoid
not being "portable across databases" which they think means not using
    Oracle sequences (yadda yadda yadda).
I'd look for any SQL statement in the "SQL sorted by Elapsed Time"
section of the AWR report which exhibits high elapsed time but
relatively low CPU time, indicating a lot of wait time. Of course,
there are something like 800 possible wait events in current releases
of Oracle, of which "buffer busy waits" is only one, so this is just
inference and not a direct causal connection to your problem. But,
once I find such statements I'd check to see if they are
accessing/manipulating tables within the CUBS_DATA tablespace, and then
use "select * from table(dbms_xplan.display_awr('sql-id'))" to
get the execution plan(s), and then look for something ineffective
within the execution plan. You might find the script "sqlhistory.sql" helpful
here as well, to get a "historical perspective" on the execution of the
SQL statements over time, in case the buffer busy waits peaked at some
    point in the past

  • External Monitor Crops Display?

When my macbook is hooked up to an external display (I've tried an HDTV and a Projector thus far) it has a nasty habit of cropping the observable video. Typically, this isn't too large a problem, but when I'm watching something subtitled, I'll get cases where I can't read the first or last words of a line, which is annoying.
To further illustrate... maximizing a window on the ext. display will put all of my window controls out of observable range... So is there any way to fix this? I'd greatly appreciate any info.
    Thanks,
    Justin

This is a condition called overscan. It is a common problem that crops up when connecting computers to televisions. Sometimes there are ways to work around it by carefully reading the TV's user manual and using only the connections and settings designated for computer use. Sometimes there is nothing that can be done. I am linking to a thread that has more information about overscan, including an interesting historical perspective about why TVs overscan written by a poster named John Lockwood.

  • Tracing / Profiling SQL statements in Sybase

Hi Guys, I would like to capture the SQL statements that have been fired from a web app (bit like SQL Server's profiler). Is there such a tool / facility? Please note that I cannot use dbcc commands like traceon as DBA's wont grant me sa rights (in dev...crazy eh).
Is there any easy way of doing this?
    Thanks

General comment about MDA monitoring (tools) ...
If the local DBAs don't have any tools for monitoring MDA tables there are a few 3rd party tools that can provide MDA monitoring (ie, little/no programming required by the local DBAs).
Most of these 3rd party tools cost $$ to purchase, and each one has its strengths and weaknesses.
There is one 3rd party tool (that I know of) that is free, highly configurable, and IMHO does a very good job at collecting/presenting MDA data (especially from a historical perspective): ASEMON
    I personally:
    - use ASEMON for P&T work
    - install/configure ASEMON at my clients when a) they don't already have a MDA monitoring capability or b) they want to free up the $$ they're paying for some other 3rd party tool
NOTE: As Mike has pointed out, MDA collections can grow quite large and rather quickly.  This is true with ASEMON, too.

  • Help an aussie spec a system

    Hallo y'all.
Building a new system in the next week or so, and would like some advice on optimising the value of my build to take advantage of Adobe Premiere Elements 8. The main initial task will be editting some low quality MPEGs of 9hrs/10GB of my grandfather talking about his life and involvement in WWII. It'll mostly be very simple cutting and editting, but I would like to play around with some of the other features without having to twiddle my thumbs too much, and the system is intended to last for at least 3 years.
I'll definitely be getting or re-using:
    - CoolerMaster 690 case
    -  ATI HD 5770 1GB (I'm a casual gamer)
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    - KB/Mouse/23.6" LCD/Speakers/Printer and other peripherals all fine
and these parts may be useful salvage from the existing PC (but am willing to replace if I get a value for money increase in performance):
    - Samsung 400GB 400LJ
    - Samsung 400GB 403LJ
    - Samsung 640GB 642JJ
    - 2GB Transcend DDR2-800 5-5-5-18
    - Pioneer DVR-118L (PATA, so mainboard will have to have PATA if you want to re-use)
Need all other parts. Don't need Blu-Ray. Have a budget of $AUD1,000 for everything (not including the "definitely be getting or re-using" list) and will be shopping at MSY. Price list here - a bit of an annoying format unfortunately, but they're the best priced around and I'm not far from them. You can, if you like, also select things from NetPlus, PLE and Austin, but you'll note MSY are generally a better price and I have to get the majority of the thing from one place to get the OEM Windows license.
I've been servicing computer for a living for the last 8 years, so no need to worry about help physically building the thing.
I understand the program properly supports quad core (in that it'll actually use all 4 cores and max out the CPU if the task requires it), but I'm having trouble finding official confirmation of that and benchmarks to show the actual performance difference. Does anyone have any convenient benchmarks that show performance differences between things like platforms, DDR2/DDR3 at different bandwidths and number of cores? It'd make the process a whole pile easier as I've mostly been going on generalisations based on other programs being benchmarked like Premiere CS4.
From what I've seen of other benchmarks, the LGA1366 platform doesn't give a value for money performance advantage unless you're into Crossfire/SLI and the AMD offerings like the Phenom II X4 945, 955 & 965 don't compete that well with the Core i7 860. In the above linked CS4 benchmarks, the i7-870 seems to be almost twice as fast as the i5-750, which doesn't make a lot of sense to considering they have the same cache and only 266MHz difference. Anyone know why that is? Presumably some kind of i5/i7 architectural difference, but it does seem bloody wierd. It'd also be nice to know what "editting video" as a task means, but hey.
Higher bandwidth RAM doesn't seem to help, as the latency does go up as well. But since there's only a marginal price difference between DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 ($20 for 8GB), might as well get the DDR3-1600.
What I think would likely go best:
    - Gigabyte P55-UD3R $149
    - 2 x 4G DDR3 1600 Patriot-Signature/G.Skill-NQ $125ea $250
    - Intel Core i7-860 $340
    - Antec EarthWatts 650W $121
    - Seagate 1.5TB $141
    Total $1001
Obviously I'd be re-using the HDDs and Optical on that build. The PSU is a little overkill since the system likely won't draw more than 200W for most operation and 250W under heavy CPU + GPU load, but again I save only a little by getting a weaker one (of equal or better quality). I went with the 860 because of the aforementioned wierd Tom's Hardware results, but if someone's certain that's, well, wrong, I can drop to the i5 750 and get a second HDD. I'm uncertain the model of the Seagate though, so will call them tomorrow to check that and to make sure it's a good 'un.
Would you suggest something completely different?
    Bonus question:
What is the best HDD configuration re: fastest drive to each task? e.g. Scratch=Fastest, Media=Second, OS/Program=Slowest.
I apologise for the extended and likely unnecessarally long post.

    A historical perspective.
As you rightly mentioned, at the time I wrote the Lynnfield versus Bloomfield article those price differences were right, but in this very volatile market with daily price changes it may no longer be accurate. The CPU prices of 17-920 and 17-860 are about equal, as are their performances. Of course the P55 versus X58 price difference still holds at around the same comparative advantage for the P55. You also mention the PCI-e lane difference, which IMO is the most important difference.
    And now...
the i7-860 is attractive if you are certain you will not need additional PCI-e lanes and/or will want to upgrade to the Gulftown. Otherwise the 17-920 is still the way to go, because you also have the advantage of 12 GB of memory instead of only 8 GB on a P55 with CS5 being 64 bit.

  • Data Transfer Objects

Is it safe to assume that Data Transfer Objects should be populated by Business Objects that are local to entity beans or whatever is being used to populate them?

So if the point of DTOs is to reduce network traffic, why would you initially populate them using a remote object? That doesn't have anything to do with what I said.Well that was the jist of my question.Your statement has a historical perspective which probably doesn't mean much in current DTO usage.
Originally RMI was promoted as a a 'method' interface. As such you would have had the equivalent of a DTO with setter/getter for each attribute. Each setter/getter would invoke a remote procedure call to the server.
Thus a data object with 5 attributes would cause 5 network calls to 'populate' the attributes.
    That was vastly inefficient.
Consequently the first DTO type (which was not called a DTO) was promoted as a way to avoid that.
If you want you can look up "Remote Procedure Call" (RPC) which would have been the origin of where the 'method' idiom originated. And quite apart from performance, populating a local object from the remote prevents disruption of the local data in case the network connection is (temporarilly) lost.

  • PowerPC Help, WoW Help, MacBook Help??

    Hi Just a few questions.
I am a total geek when it comes to games and computers BUT I am brand new to MacBooks.
Its literally taken me a whole week just to learn how to change some of the settings on it, iv always been a PC guy.
    Anyways....
How come when I go to install World of Warcraft or some other applications that say WILL work on the box they say that its not supported as PowerPC Is no longer supported?
I tried downloading the "TryMe" World of Warcraft from Blizzard and that installed without any problems.
I am just wondering if I am going to have to buy all these games again! and when they are going to start releasing them in this new appstore which has literally nothing worth downloading on it.
I want to be able to install my old games and programs. Is there any easy alternative I could get?
    or
is apple going to release something in the next firmware?
Any input is helpful but mind keep it simple lol

Rather than negative replies and off-topic posts, here is some historical perspective for you:
When those games were released, the publisher did not anticipate that in 2006, Apple would migrate its complete line of computers from the PowerPC CPU platform to Intel.
Apple recoginizing that its existing user base owned substantial amounts of software that ran on the PowerPC platform, licensed a technology from a third party company that it included in its Intel version of OS X Tiger, then Leopard, and then optionally in Snow Leopard, which Apple called Rosetta.  Apple's license to continue to include Rosetta with future versions of OS X (Lion, Mt. Lion and now Maverick) expired and the current owner of the underlying technology, IBM, was not likely to renew that license at a reasonable price.
So there are four established workarounds for dealing with PowerPC apps in an Intel world:
    1.  If you upgraded your Mac to Lion/Mt. Lion, restore Snow Leopard;
    2.  If you upgraded your Mac to Lion/Mt. Lion or otherwise have a Mac that can boot Snow Leopard, partition your hard drive or add an external one and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to run your PowerPC apps;
    3.  If available, upgrade your app to an Intel version, or find an Intel substitute app that will be able to open your data files, modify them and save them; or
    4.  If all else fails (for example, needing to run an Appleworks database on a new Mac that only boots Mt. Lion), install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8 to restore Rosetta functionality and be able to run most PowerPC apps:

  • Time Machine restore point failure - a WARNING!

I have an iMac 21.5", Late 2012, which has spontaneously died three times, so Apple are going to replace it (and good on them for that too!). Usual question from the Genius Bar techo - 'do you have a backup you can restore from, or should we data migrate for you?'
The iMac (10.8.2) in question has had, since it was installed in December 2012, an external HDD, selected as (and exclusively so) the Time Machine backup drive. It has faithfully done its backups once a day daily (using Time Machine Editor to adjust frequency of backups). I've used it to 'go back in time' to restore various files over the past six months no problem. Looking into the mounted sparesimage you can see and access the dailies. This iMac had gone through 10.8.2 > 10.8.3 > 10.8.4 updates before it died.
So, to be able to answer the Genius Bar techo, I hooked it up to my 10.8.4 iMac, booted into the recovery partition, selected Restore from TM backup option for this drive, and found out that the last actual 'restore point' was actually months ago!!! Even though TM had been dutifully and (proven) done the TM backups, it's official 'restore point' is actually way months - so all the data accumulated/changed since then is actually not restorable through Migration Assistant, and would have to manually restored piecemeal from the retsore point!!
Bottom line: in this particular case, the HDD is OK - so a clone from the old drive to the new iMac's drive is OK. However, had the old iMac's drive failed in any way, the daily Time Machine backup would have been worthless as a 'restore-and-go' backup.
So - be warned: check the state of your Time Machine backup by looking to see what it's last 'restore point' actually is. If it isn't your last backup, as far as i can tell, deleting the current TM backup, and starting over again is the only way forward for a 'restore point' backup; if you need the incrementals, then get a new backup drive and harness that.
[Notes: I'm talking from a purely Mountain Lion perspective - I can't say for other iterations Leopard-onwards.
Also, for the record, my other iMac's external third-party backup drive recently failed and was replaced, and the (now) 10.8.3 > 10.8.4 TM backup restore point is today current from that point forward - so I can't give another historical perspective on whether it was a particular update that might have caused the restore point issue].

After checking 'backup folders' in TM, and a few other things, they concluded there was nothing wrong with my system.
But, I asked, what about the missing 'full backup' restore points missing when a cmd-R restart is done.  And how do I get them started again?  "No worries" was the response.  "We have better ways of recovering a full system than by the cmd-R restart method, should you ever need it" were the exact words used.
That's outrageous!   Things you didn't exclude are not being backed-up, and they think that's ok?!?!
There is a different method, not a better one.  It involves erasing your HD, installing a fresh copy of OSX (4+ GB download, unless you saved the installer), then using Setup Assistant to transfer everything except OSX from your backups.
However, if you do have the bug in question, that won't work either:  The hidden private folder, also at the top level, isn't backed-up either, and that prevents Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant from even recognizing the backups as backups!
Is this the problem you are seeing?
    Sure sounds like it.
Here's what I'd recommend:  Start up Migration Assistant (in your Applications/Utilities folder), go through the first few windows, far enough to see if the backups are recognized.  See Using Migration Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion.  If your backups don't appear in the Select Your System window (in the tan box), that's what's happening.
If so, call them back and ask what their "better" method is; if they mention either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant, tell them you've tried that.  Then refer them to any or all of the following:
My thread here:  UPDATED: Serious Time Machine bug on Mountain Lion.
My web page on the issue:  #D10 at http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html Also tell them I have evidence of something changing the Time Machine "plist" on several other Macs running with Mountain Lion with this same problem.   While I don't know how to reproduce it on my Mac, I would be GLAD to talk or e-mail with them to help get this identified.

  • Mono Color Scheme?

Is there a way to configure the colors used by applications running under Mono?
When I run Rawr the application looks rather terrible.  This is because I use a dark theme using black/aqua and the programs menus and such decide to use my aqua text on the light background, making everything a bit hard to read.   I've noticed that using lxappearance to change my theme did help, as now the text is black/white, so I can at least do that for now.
I was wondering if there is a way to configure a GTK theme to work on mono apps.  Or perhaps, a way to modify my rawr.sh to change my theme, start the app, and then change my theme back again.

hmmm... do you have an identity already? logo, etc? maybe
some color in there could serve as the base?

  • DId ERP evolve from MRP.

    Hi
This is something which has been a annoyance of mine for some while now.  Nearly every ERP related research paper I have read indicates the ERP systems evolved from MRP.  But is this really the case?  They have similair abbreviations.
I  would assume that if it was true then some of the current ERP systems would have been an MRP system in a previous life.  From my research I could not find any examples of this in the top tier systems (SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft)  I know many of these systems have now been merged but I am talking from an historical perspective.
The first mention of this evolution was by Davenport in his famous HBR article.  Have academics blindly accepted this proposition without investigating.  Anyway by wait of numbers now it must be true.  I am interested to see some opinions.
    Good luck

    Hi Paul,
In my opinion, as times passed by, I think its an evolution/ manifestation of the paradim of managing companies assets.
Earlier it was fragmented (not integrated) so the finance dept had Accounting package, Production dept had MRP package, Purchasing dept had Inventory package and HR dept had HRM package etc......
And we know that today these departments are integrated as "Enterprise Resource Planning" and not as "Departmental/ Functional Resource Planning".
Infact SAP's evolution in the very early days shows signs of the fragmentation and then moved on to Integration as its USP and now to de-coupling.
The most interestig thing which occurs to me in this discussion is the de-coupling of the integration for the purpose of making the software flexible in the lines of SOA and also maintenance and enhancement of the appplication.
So instead of saying "Functional/ Departmental" earlier, we now say "De-Coupled" to align with SOA. But the Departmental and Functional concepts exist within ERP. So, the ERP has not just evolved from MRP but from other software components within the company as mentioned above.
    This is my perspective.

  • Dmenu_run color scheme

Hey guys i have been searching for ways to change the color scheme in dmenu_run (/usr/bin/dmenu_run) and found the solution.
    here is my dmenu_run file:
    #!/bin/sh
    CACHE=${XDG_CACHE_HOME:-"$HOME/.cache"}/dmenu_run
    IFS=:
    if test "`ls -dt $PATH "$CACHE" 2> /dev/null | sed 1q`" != "$CACHE"; then
    mkdir -p "`dirname "$CACHE"`" && lsx $PATH | sort -u > "$CACHE"
    fi
    exe=`dmenu -b -fn '-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-17-*-*-*-*-*-*-*' -nf '#e04613' -nb '#3b3b3b' -sf '#e04613' -sb '#000000' "$@"< "$CACHE"` && exec sh -c "$exe"
This color scheme matches the Elegant brit theme.
    -nf is for color font
    -nb is for background
-sf is for the font of highlighted text
-sb is for the background of the highlight
    enjoy!

  • BROKE HINGE on MBA Rev.A - Anyone else have this problem?

My MacBook Air Rev. A had the exact problem already reported here - the hinge becomes loose over time, then suddenly catches and cracks from normal use, it's not from undue stress, my collegue have the exact problem, but his MacBook Air not crack yet. Anyone have this problem, I think the hinge becomes loose over time is already reported by MBA Rev.A users, but this hinge will broke sonner or later. If more users have this problem, please report them.
    Thanks.
    Alex

"My MacBook Air Rev. A had the exact problem already reported here - the hinge becomes loose over time, then suddenly catches and cracks from normal use..."
There is a long thread involving this situation and, if you want to read a historical perspective, I suggest that you search the forums. You described the situation exactly. The display hinge becomes loose, which is a manufacturing problem, and should be repaired under warranty IMMEDIATELY. If you don't get the problem fixed and continue to use the computer with the loose display, the hinge will break. Since you had the opportunity to get it fixed, ignored the problem and continued to use the computer until it broke, Apple considers it as "abuse" - which is not covered by the AppleCare warranty.

  • Just bought MacBook Pro on 10/30: Shouldn't Leopard have been preinstalled?

I bought a MacBook Pro this past Tues (Oct. 30)at my local Apple store and was just setting it up (it's my first Mac). There's a Leopard disc in the box, but Tiger is pre-installed (I thought Leopard would be pre-installed). I held off buying in order to get Leopard and now I don't feel like fooling around with installing an upgrade. Any advice for a Mac newbie before I call Apple? Or should I just take it back to the store on Monday? Thank you!!

It's one half dozen or the other, really. They'll both generate the same result. If you go through the entire Tiger setup then you might as well go with the archive/install or upgrade option. On the other hand, if you go with a clean format & install then it seems overkill to go through the Tiger install as you'll immediately wipe out the settings.
From a historical perspective, moving from Panther to Tiger it was a 3-4 week period where computers still shipped after the new OS launch with the prior OS tied to the machine. But in the end, you're still getting Leopard!
