ABAP mapping Vs Graphical mapping

Hi
I have an inbound scenario to R/3 where the purchase requisition has 300 line items. I was wondering if it is easier to do ABAP mapping for such scenarios instead of Graphical mapping as it would be better performace as ABAP mapping is executed on ABAP engine?
I would appreciate valuable inputs.
Thanks,
Arjun.

Hi Arjun
As mentioned above in the comparison Blog between 2 mappings, i dont think it gives clear picture, if you have some specific work which getting Dynamic Configuration stuff for example, then you will have to Look for ABAP mapping Class, my thinking is that it depends completely on the requirment.
For ABAP mapping you can go to
https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/e3ead790-0201-0010-64bb-9e4d67a466b4
Let me know if you want any further clarifications

    Hi Experts,
              I have a question regarding different message mapping options available in XI namely
    Graphical Mapping
    XSLT mapping
    Java Mapping
    ABAP Mapping
    Q1: Which amoung the above mappings is the best and why?
    Q2: On what cases Graphical, XSLT, Java and ABAP Mapping should be used?
    Q3: Is it true that graphical and XSLT mappings are converted into Java class internally?
    Kindly help!

    Hi,
    There is no hard and fast rule for using the mapping techniques.
    Graphical Mapping is used for simple mapping cases. When, the logic for your mapping is simple and straight forward and it does not involve mult hiearchical mapping requirement. and context handling.
    Java and XSLT mapping are used when graphical mapping cannot help you.
    When the choice is between Java And XSLT, XSLT is simpler than java mapping and easier. But, it has its drawbacks.  XSLT can lead to a bad perfrormance if the Source XML is huge.
    Java Mapping uses 2 types of parsers. DOM and SAX. DOM is easier to use with lots of classes to help you create nodes and elements, but , DOM is very processor intensive.
    SAX parser is something that parses your XML one after the other, and so is not processor intensive. But, it is not exaclty easy to develop either.

    Am not sure about XSLT , but , yes graphical mapping is converted into java classes internally and these classes use SAX parsing as well.

  • Dynamic configuration in ABAP Mapping

    Dear All,
    I have requirement to use the filename's name in the mapping to the target message.
    e.g: Filename is Victor.303, i need to take this 303 and map it to the target message.
    I understand i can get that value using dynamic configuration in Adapter-Specific Attributes.
    But all the samples are using Java code used in UDF.
    How to do the same in ABAP Mapping?
    I tried:
       record =  dynamic_configuration->get_record( namespace = 'http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File'
                                                        name = 'FileName').
    But record-value return blank.
    Best Regards,
    Victor.

    Dear Prateek,
    I changed my code with:
      DATA: record TYPE mpp_dynamic.
      CALL METHOD dynamic_configuration->get_record
        EXPORTING
          namespace = 'http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File'
          name      = 'FileName'
        RECEIVING
          record    = record.
    but record-value still return as blank.
    I have doubt in this, do i need to populate the FileName in the dynamic configuration (in the graphical mapping) first before i can get the value in the ABAP mapping? or System should filled it and i just can use it directly in the ABAP mapping?
    How we know what is the available name and namespace in that dynamic configuration-->get record??
    (e.g: my case is FileName, and in the link that you gave is ERROR.)
    Any link for this?
    Best Regards,
    Victor.

  • Java Mapping, XSLT Mapping, ABAP Mapping

    Hi Experts,
                     Could any one explain what is the main features of the following Mapping. How to pick the mapping?
    Java Mapping - When to use and what is the advantage.
    ABAP Mapping - When to use and what is the advantage.
    XSLT Mapping - When to use and what is the advantage.
    Graphical Mapping - When to use and what is the advantage.
    cheers,
    Sunee

    There are 4 types of mapping in XI
    1. Graphical Mapping
    2. XSLT Mapping
    3. JAVA Mapping
    4. ABAP Mapping
    When to use Message mapping
    1 When the logic for your mapping is simple and straight forward, you can use
    Advantages of message mapping
    1)Easy to use.
    2) has GUI drag and drop.
    3) used for simple mapping cases
    4) it does not involve any complex logic
    Disadvantages of message mapping
    1)has limitation in terms of complex hierarchy
    When to use Java mapping
    1) Java mapping are used when graphical mapping cannot help you.
    Advantages of Java Mapping
    1)you can use Java APIs and Classes in it.
    2) file look up or a DB lookup is possible
    3) DOM is easier to use with lots of classes to help you create nodes and elements.
    Disadvantages of Java mapping
    1)SAX parser is not easy to develop
    2)DOM parser is intensive
    3) Java knowledge is required
    4) bit complexer
    XSLT Mapping - When to use
    1)When the required output is other than XML like Text, Html or XHTML (html displayed as XML )
    2)When default namespace coming from graphical mapping is not required or is to be changed as per requirements.
    3)When data is to be filtered based on certain fields (considering File as source)
    4)When data is to be sorted based on certain field (considering File as source)
    5)When data is to be grouped based on certain field (considering File as source)
    Advantages of using XSLT mapping
    1)XSLT program itself defines its own target structure.
    2)XSLT programs can be imported into SAP XI. Message mapping step can be avoided. One can directly go for interface mapping once message interfaces are created and mapping is imported.
    3)XSLT provides use of number of standard XPath functions that can replaces graphical mapping involving user defined java functions easily.
    4)File content conversion at receiver side can be avoided in case of text or html output.
    5)Multiple occurrences of node within tree (source XML) can be handled easily.
    6)XSLT can be used in combination with graphical mapping.
    7)Multi-mapping is also possible using xslt.
    8)XSLT can be used with ABAP and JAVA Extensions
    Disadvantages of using XSLT mapping
    1)Resultant XML payload can not be viewed in SXMB_MONI if not in XML format (for service packs < SP14).
    2)Interface mapping testing does not show proper error description. So errors in XSLT programs are difficult to trace in XI but can be easily identified outside XI using browser.
    3)XSLT mapping requires more memory than mapping classes generated in Java.
    4)XSLT program become lengthier as source structure fields grows in numbers.
    5)XSLT program sometimes become complex to meet desired functionality.
    6)Some XSL functions are dependent on version of browser.
    Advantages of Abap Mapping
    1) A person comfortable with OOABAP can go for ABAP mapping instead.
    Disadvantages of Abap Mapping
    1) Abap knowledge is required
    2) bit compexer

  • When we wil go for abap mapping ??

    Hi,
    As we know there are graphical, XSLT, JAVA mappings are there apart from ABAP mapping. I have gone through below weblog.
    /people/udo.martens/blog/2006/08/23/comparing-performance-of-mapping-programs
    and also help.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/12/05731a10264057badc32d3d3957015/frameset.htm
    None of them says ABAP mapping is either faster or stable as compared to other mappings. Even though it is the case, still when we will go for abap mapping ??
    Is it like that it is totally depend on the available resources in hand ??
    thanks

    About your statement.
    If you consider the field mapping (or UDF) runtime, then you are correct. But if you consider the whole mapping runtime, you also have to "load" the full message in message mapping, obviously. What happens is that it is transparent to the developer, since loading and parsing is done by standard. But message mapping also deals with loading and parsing the whole message (and it is done with Java underneath). Then I don't think message mapping will have a significantly better/worse performance, when compared with Java mappings (performing normal xml processing methods).
    As for XSLT, the performance problems happens because you have a XSLT processor running over Java VM. Then, if you have heavy load on it, the mapping runtime will consume the resources necessary to run the xslt processor (which is, by itself, very resource consuming) and also to treat that heavy input.

  • No restart capability during mapping failures in ABAP mapping

    I am doing ABAP mapping and would like to fail the ABAP mapping (during certain application scenarios) in such a way that message cannot be resent? Is this possible during the mapping.

    Hi Krish,
    My few cents.
    You can resend only the asynchronous scenarios.If you resend you need to develop the logic that in the resend the exception will not generate.
    From my point of view, if you want to throw a controlled exception you should do via UDF like this blog explains Throwing Smart Exceptions in XI Graphical Mapping
    If you work with ABAP mapping you have setting more difficulties if in the future your PI go to be upgraded to PI java only version stack.
    Hope this helps.

  • ABAP Proxy ABAP Mapping

    Hi All,
    The use of ABAP Proxy is nothing but the Adapterless implementation,as per my assumption.But is there any other reason for prefessing ABAP Proxy over the Adapter while the practical implenentation is done?
    Also,for ABAP Mapping ,I have a qustion that when is ABAP Mapping preferred over other Mappings that is Graphical Mapping and Java Mapping while practical implementation?
    Thanks and regards,
    Amol

    Hi Shweta,
        To answer your first question, we prefer ABAP proxies over RFCs due to the reason that the communication happens directly between the Integration Engine of sender sap R/3 system and the IE of the XI system. It elimintes the need for Adapter Engine(On the sender side).
    However, when there are standard IDOCs avaialble, then we use IDOCs instead of proxies due to the various other advantages of IDOCs like monitoring, reprocxesing etc.
    But, in case the sender is not a SAP R/3 system, then obvious we can not use ABAP Proxy.
    Refer this article to choose the best integration option amongst Proxy,RFC,Enterprise Services.

    Regarding your second question,
    ABAP mapping is least preferred due to issues like Performance, Non-Portability (We cannot use the abap mapping in any other Open-source middleware).
    The only time we go for it is if we have people with only ABAP skills..:)

  • Message split ABAP mapping

    Hello everybody,
    for a special mappging I use ABAP mapping -everything fine.
    But I need to split the message with ABAP mapping.
    Does anybody know if this is possible ?
    In the ABAP-class I use the interface IF_MAPPING. This has as a result parameter the parameter RESULT Type XSTRING (no table).
    It only works to add to XMLs in 1 XML string, but my result have to be 2 XML files.
    Alternatively would it be an idea to use multi message mapping (graphical first) AND then ABAP-mapping for special mappings?
    Thanks a lot,
    Florian

    Florian,
    for multimappings in coded mappings (xslt, java and abap mappings) you'll also create a single stream, but in this case, the stream may have the following format:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:Messages xmlns:ns0="http://sap.com/xi/XI/SplitAndMerge">
    <ns0:Message1>
        <b><enter your first message here></b>
    </ns0:Message1>
    <ns0:Message2>
        <b><enter your second message here></b>
    </ns0:Message2>
    </ns0:Messages>
    where <ns0:MessageX> tags refer to each different target message type.
    In the case you have a 1:n split, you'll have only 1 message type, but may have several messages within it.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:Messages xmlns:ns0="http://sap.com/xi/XI/SplitAndMerge">
    <ns0:Message1>
        <b><My_message id=1></b>
        <b></My_message></b>
        <b><My_message id=2></b>
        <b></My_message></b>
    </ns0:Message1>
    </ns0:Messages>
    Also, remember that, when you define an interface mapping as multimapping (meaning, you set either source, target or both interfaces to multiple messages, your input stream will also contain the <ns0:Messages> and <ns0:MessageX> tags, so you need to treat them in your mapping program.
    Regards,
    Henrique.

  • Abap mapping for content conditions routing in a flat-flat scenario

    Dear Experts.
    I have a flat-flat file scenario. Based on the content of the input file, I need to route data to the receiver.The source flat file will have several IDOC details.
    Assume two fields FIELD1 and FIELD2 in different segments of the IDOC. My requirement is if FIELD1 of an IDOC = "XYZ" and FIELD2 of the same IDOC = "PQR", then this  IDOC's details has to be passed to the receiver.
    I have tried to implement the above condition at interface determination in graphical mapping.
    In the graphical mapping,  the problem is:
    Assuming there are 3 idocs in the input file.
    FIELD1 of IDOC[1] = 'XYZ' and FIELD2 of IDOC[1] = 'PQR'
    FIELD1 of IDOC[2] = 'LMN' and FIELD2 of IDOC[2] = 'RST'
    FIELD1 of IDOC[3] = 'ABC' and FIELD2 of IDOC[3] = 'DEF' .
    Now, if none of the IDOCs in the input file satisfy my requirement,the message mapping should not be called at all. But in my case its failing because FIELD1 of IDOC[1] and FIELD2 of IDOC[3] together are satisfying the condition and hence the message mapping is getting called.
    And I need to check this condition IDOC wise. Both the conditions has to be satisfied in the same IDOC.
    The question is very similar to the one posted by SHOBHA HB. (Topic:Receiver determination(or Interface determination) and conditional routing )
    but, due to complexities in the graphical mapping,  we have decided to go for the ABAP mapping instead.
    Kindly help, by mentioning the steps I should follow for this interface, the logic basically. I already have paths to some basic ABAP mapping documents from SDN, so, kindly refrain from posting general URLS for definition or history of ABAP mapping.
    IF you could guide me on this interface, It would be really helpful.

  • Regarding Java mapping and ABAP Mapping

    Hello,
         If I suppose to do Java mapping or ABAP mapping, Is there any pre requisite to perform these two mappings?
    If exist what they are?
    How to perform them?
    Thank you

    Hello jyotsna,
    Java mapping can be used when you have complex mapping structures.
    We can do most of the times for our requirements through Graphical mapping.
    When the structures are very complex to build you can go for SAX (Simple API for XML) or DOM (Document Object Model) parsers.
    Message mapping internally generates DOM parser.

    ABAP mappings run on ABAP Stack and are developed in the ABAP workbench of the Integration Server.
    You normally do not need to use the ABAP mappings and is preferable for someone with ABAP programming background. I should say JAVA functions would suffice any complex scenarios.

    just provide the name of abap mapping program it will work.
    and one more thing you cannot test abap mapping program in integration builer you need to test in abap only.

  • When do we go for ABAP mapping and Java mapping

    Hi friends,
                At present I am working on graphical mapping in XI ,can you guys give me with an example or scenario when do we use ABAP mapping , Java mapping or XSLT mapping.
    Thanks in advance
    Sud

    <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/forums">https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/forums</a>
    I have standard XSLT mapping programs available for my scenarios, so use XSLT mapping. Similarly with Java mapping,  For most scenarios, message mapping does the job too well. Abap mapping similarly is used to leverge existing ABAP base.  If message mapping becomes confusing and hard to follow with too many functions, I go for Java mapping (just my way). I havent used ABAP mapping thus far.
    Discussing ABAP mapping
    ABAP mapping is developed in ABAP work bench. ABAP mapping needs to be transported to integration server and XI does not support this transport and have to do with ABAP transports.
    Customers who can develop mapping program on SAP web AS and can transport them there can use ABAP mapping
    *ABAP mapping programs cannot access the value table
    *Since ABAP mappings are executed on ABAP stack SAP does not provide any ABAP mapping programs
    *ABAP mapping programs must exists with one single version in IS, unlike JAva and XSLT mapping that can have multiple versions of mapping program

  • XML to ABAP - where the ABAP mapping?

    Dear experts,
    I have to do an ABAP mapping which I have never done before.
    I found blog:
    /people/r.eijpe/blog/2005/11/21/xml-dom-processing-in-abap-part-ii--convert-an-xml-file-into-an-abap-table-using-sap-dom-approach
    which shows the ABAP code.
    I use PI 7.1
    Questions:
    - But where in XI/PI do I implement this code?
    - How can I test the code while I write it?
    - Can I pick up the XML file to map from an FTP server?
    Thank you very much for your help!
    Best regards,
    Peter

    Hi,
    I dont think you really need to develop ABAP Mapping , you can achive this requirement using standard Graphical Mapping.
    But let me know which IDoc/rfc or table you want to update information.
    if it is bapi use RFC  IDoc go with IDoc adapter.
    elase try with proxies.
    normally it is not a best practive to implement ABAP Mapping,sometimes you experience perfromace issues.

  • [ABAP Mapping] No output

    Hey,
    try to do a scenario like "How to use ABAP mapping in SAP XI 3.0", but got no output.
    Is it correct that we don't need a namespace for abap mapping? In the "How to" document the namespace field is empty, but in sxmb_moni he says:
    <b>  <SAP:AdditionalText>com.sap.aii.af.ra.ms.api.DeliveryException: error while processing the request to rfc-client: com.sap.aii.af.rfc.afcommunication.RfcAFWException: error while processing message to remote system:com.sap.aii.af.rfc.core.client.RfcClientException: could not get functionname from XML requst: com.sap.aii.af.rfc.RfcAdapterException: failed to read funtionname from XML document: missing namespace declaration(2)</SAP:AdditionalText> </b>
    But he takes the ABAP mapping, because in ABAP code I create following trace node:
    <i>  DATA: l_trace TYPE string.
      CONCATENATE 'Chris Sender Service = ' l_sender_service INTO l_trace.
      trace->trace( level = '1'
      message = l_trace ).</i>
    And in sxmb_moni he got it:
    <i><Trace level="1" type="T">Chris Sender Service =BS_Reisebuero2</Trace> </i>
    In sxi_mapping_test he writes, that the mapping was successful, but didn't create the output structure. Do I have a wrong ABAP code? Could it be, that I have a wrong append_child??
    Here it is (it equals the how to):

    Hi,
    I took a working scenario, that is runnable with java- and graphical mapping.
    Just change it to ABAP-Mapping.
    I just had forget to include the namespace into abap mapping. So the output has to look like:
    <ns1:SXIDEMO_AIRL_FLIGHT_CHECKAVAIL <b>xmlns:ns1="urn:sap-com:document:sap:rfc:functions"</b>>
    That was the missing namespace. Another problem was my created structure. I used the function append_child with a wrong input.
    Your tip, that I'm able to use the debugger in
    sxi_mapping test was great. So points for you!

  • ABAP Mapping Not getting triggered

    Hi All,
    I have implemented ABAP Mapping in my object.My interface mapping contains three mappings, two graphical mappins and the third one is the ABAP Mapping. Data flows from first to second to ABAP MApping (A ABAP Class).
    While testing the scenario, i put one break point in the abap class and tried to test the scenario from SXI_MAPPING_TEST. But the control does not go to the break point which i have put in the abap class.
    Also i added some code to update a database table with a hard coded value. While testing with SXI_MAPPING_TEST, it didn't update the table. While running the class from SE80 (We can not put SOURCE here), the database table was updated successfully.
    What i have concluded is that the control is not going to the ABAP Mapping class. I'm not sure why it is happening. Also I'm new to ABAP Mapping.
    It would be great if you could suggest me some solution..
    Thanks in Advance
    Waiting for reply.
    Raveesh

    It was some configuration issue.

    Hi !!
    refer the below links
    BAP Mapping is used whenever you explicitly need to build your output XML structure . Its entirely depends on your call which approach you want to adopt i.e. JAVA mapping or ABAP mapping as in both the cases you need to explicitly build the output structure . ABAP Mapping however creates a DOM tree in the memory . Therefore it can be a performance issue whenever your source structure is complex . In case you need an idea of how to go about ABAP mapping here is a link which you can refer
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/47/b5413acdb62f70e10000000a114084/frameset.htm
    Also ABAP mappings have the handicap that they are separated from usual development in Repository. Additional there is more (ABAP, DOM) experience required as for example for XSLT or graphical mapping (my point of view). So they are used for special reasons like access to ABAP stack (transparent tables!).
    Refer to following SDN Demo which explains the need and how to do the ABAP mapping.
