I am beginner in oracle standby database.
Can anyone please explain me in steps that what happen in primary and standby side when we execute following command in standby database.(means how new logs identify, transfer and apply on standby side.)
alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session; When you give this command from standby, It will start Media Recovery Process(MRP),
According to the applied sequence on standby which information fetched from controlfile, It tries to apply the next sequence. "ex: elect max(sequence#) from v$archived_log where applied='YES';"
However if connection established between primary & standby without this MRP, archives will be shipped from primary to standby.
If in case archives not exist in archive location, It tries to get archives(FAL) using FAL_SERVER mentioned TNS service. Once whenever archives are arrived according to the needed
sequence it will apply.

  • Your experience about Standby Database (Logical).

    Hi,
As expressed in the subject of the thread, I'd like to get some feedback about Logical Standby.
One of the databases (A) here has a setup with a Physical Standby (B). In order to lighten the workload on A, i want to "upgrade" B to a Logical Standby. The procedure is already defined, tested and functionnal. But as I never managed a Logical Standby, it would be great if you could share your experience about:
1/ A's workload: Will there be a big overhead due to log treatments (and supplemental log data)?
2/ LAS: Will it take longer to apply an archived redo log to Logical B than it takes on the Physical B?
3/ I can't set the hardware on B's host to the same level as it's on A's host.
A has (6cpu, 20GiB RAM, half for SGA)
    Physical B has (2cp, 9GiB RAM, 5GiB for SGA)
Logical B will have (3cpu, 12GiB RAM, xxxGiB SGA)
The load on B will be very very less than it is on A. Knowing A perfs is O.K., will B perf on reporting be O.K.?
4/ my target for backup is now B. When the "upgrade" will be finished, would you advise to continue the backup on the Logical Standby, or to switch to a backup via (RMAN/HotBackup/...) ?
5/ Any other advice you could give :-)
    Thanks,
    Yoann.

    Hi Yoann,
Some time ago I created a logical database for Oracle 9.2.0.4 db on RH Linux then on 9.2.0.6 ver (same OS). It was very tempting to decrease loading on primary database through using logical standby, but It was not moved to production. I stuck with some problems when transactions stopped because of some inconsistency (I used transaction consistency set to NONE because of performance) and there were a couple of them between a hundred of tables. After that I tried to create a database link upon the primary database, but it was not apt to use with the same procedures to execute.
    Regarding questions:
    1. I did not find the big overhead, but a lot of additional actions should be done due to maintenance tables w/o PK on LGSTBY
    2. Difficult to say ...
    3. I had LGSTBY half of power of primary
    4. I will not you advise to backup LGSTBY because of some possible problems with transactions, maintenance etc. better to use RMAN on primary or physical standby
    5. Try to test 10g logical standby (I have read that there is no need to freeze the primary database during logical standby creation)
    Hope this helps,
    Andrey

  • Standby Database 9i

    Hi,
Could someone help me to find more info about "Standby Database" on Oracle 9i? I am interested in using this concept into our company recovery system but I would need technical details about how to configure it. (I don't find anything on oracle books)
If someone has some experience using it as a "disaster protection" its opinion would be very valuable. Thanks.
Definition of standby database "A copy of a production database that you can use for disaster protection. You can update the standby database with archived redo logs from the production database in order to keep it current. If a disaster destroys the production database, you can activate the standby database and make it the new production database."

  • Upgrading Standby Database

    Hello Expert !!
Once again I need you expert advice. We have a production database on 9.2.0.5, which we would like to upgrade to 10.2.0.3. A Physical Data Guard configuration is present for this database. The size of the database is more than 1 TB.
Upgrading Primary database is straight forward but how do I upgrade the standby database and continue the Data Guard configuration.
While upgrading the primary we would startup database with upgrade option and then startup-shutdown database couple of times. While upgrading standby how do I startup-shutdown it? (I mean normally we would normally mount the database and then open it as standby database and then place it in recovery mode).
Thanks for sharing your expertise !!!

Please read it, rather than asking others to abstract it for free.
This is a forum where people exchange their experiences, if you are really looking to make money then please this is not the place you should be in.
If you are not capable enough or haven't performed yourself then its better to be quiet.
Metalink document (Note Id: 316889.1 Complete checklist for manual upgrades to 10gR2) discusses on upgrading from 9i to 10g but unfortunately doesn't mention a word about Standby Databases. So, I was looking for people who has actually performed the upgrade themselves and who could actually point to a URL which discusses more on this issue. I dont want you to walk-in and perform the upgrade for me.

  • About Data Guard - Physical Standby Database

    Dear All,
I have read many documents regading Data Guard.
I am about to setup Data Guard in our current environment but want to clear few tings.
I have a confusion between physical and logical standby database.
What I have read from different documents is:
    -Physical Standby Database in (11g)
    1) It is the most efFicient
    2) I can be either in mount or open state
    3) Select queries and reporting can be done to improve performance of the primary database.
    4) Schema on primary and standby database is always the same
    -- Logical Standby Database
    1) You can create additional tables, indexes, etc.
    2) Always in open mode
    3) Select queries and reporting can be done to improve performance of the primary database
Now our scenerio is, that we have one server at the moment, OS is linux and operating system is 11g. We want to setup an other server in another country, will also be 11g on Linux in a way that it acts as standby/backup server. Schema and data is always the same. In case due to unavailability of primary server, standby server acts as the primary server (This has to be automated). The reason for unavailability could be any like maintenance work on primary server, network or hardware failure at primary server. The last and the most important thing is that users from this country where we will setup standby database will insert/update data on the primary server BUT queries and reporting will be done from this newly created standby data.
Kindly recomend the best Data Guard in this scenerio and kindly correct me where I am wrong.
    Thanks, Imran

A logical standby has various limitations on things like data types. It's also a much more complex architecture, which makes it more likely that something will break periodically and require attention. Applying redo to a physical standby is code that has been around forever and is as close to bullet-proof as you'll get. And you would generally prefer to fail over to a physical standby-- if you do things like create new objects in the logical standby, you may have to get rid of those objects during a failover to get acceptable OLTP performance.

  • Multiple standby database about FAL_SERVER and FAL_CLIENT parameter in DG

    Hi,
I am little bit confused about FAL_SERVER and FAL_CLIENT parameter in Data Guard.
We are planning to configure multiple standby database in Data Guard environment. Let Assume that, i have production db named as 'PROD' and multiple standby name like standby1,standby2, standby3.
    My Environment is:_
    DB Version: 11.2.0.1
    OS Version: OE5LU6
So in this case how to specify above Net service name in spfile on production server and also on other standby server.
    Kindly Suggests me.

AthishFAL_CLIENT is Oracle TNS service of the local system and FAL_SERVER is Oracle TNS service of remote system.
if you have three standby databases of primary , then from primary you must have three values in FAL_SERVER so that archives will be send to the all destinations.
and From the stadnby database, FAL_SERVER should be the oracle TNS service where you receiving the archive log files,
Note:- If you have RAC primary then mention each service differentiated by commas as shown example below.
From standby to Primary RAC:- FAL_SAERVER='PROD1','PROD2'
These parameters are dynamic, so that you can alter them at any time.

  • About physical standby database

We have physical standby database(10g). what are steps to put standby database in ready only mode for time being and then put it back in primary-secondary relationship once cheking is done?

    Cancel the redo Apply
SQL>ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;Open The database
    SQL>ALTER DATABASE OPEN;Do your stuff.
Once done, shut it down, then mount it again and resume the redo apply
    SQL>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    SQL>STARTUP NOMOUNT;
    SQL>ALTER DATABASE MOUNT STANDBY DATABASE;
SQL>ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT;If you use real-time redo apply, you may want to issue the following command instead of the previous one.
SQL>ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE USING CURRENT LOGFILE DISCONNECT;...and pretty much that is it.
Be aware that while running it in read-only mode, no logs from the primary are being applied. Also you may hit some bugs when you open your standby database. So if this standby is your production one, make sure you know how to deal in a situation when you need to resolve possible issues.
Jason Arnell has explained one possible buggy scenario on his blog - LINK.

  • How to delete the foreign archivelogs in a Logical Standby database

How do I remove the foreign archive logs that are being sent to my logical standby database. I have files in the FRA of ASM going back weeks ago. I thought RMAN would delete them.
I am doing hot backups of the databases to FRA for both databases. Using ASM, FRA, in a Data Guard environment.
I am not backing up anything to tape yet.
The ASM FRA foreign_archivelog directory on the logical standby FRA keeps growing and nothing is get deleted when

    delete noprompt force obsolete;
Primary database RMAN settings (Not all of them)
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 9 DAYS;
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default

    Then only it can communicated.

  • Question regarding removal of physical standby database?

We are running a 2 node rac cluster on linux itanium and we have setup one physical standby server. We did not use the data guard broker to setup the standby database we simply set 2 parameters log_archive_config and log_archive_dest_2.
We now are looking to remove the physical standby server and I see that the 2 parameters are dynamic so I was trying to find out if it is as simple as running the alter system comands to reove the 2 parameters?
I gues my real question is more about the syntax of removing the parameters?
    Would this syntax be correct?
    alter system set log_archive_config='' scope=both sid='*';
    alter system set log_archive_dest_2='' scope=both sid='*';
and does it make a difference which parameter is removed first?
    Thanks I appreciate any help.

the standby system is also a 2 node cluster but only one of the nodes has the instance up in a mount state running in recover mode and the other instance is simply shutdown.
    Thanks.

  • Logical Standby Database with 10g+ASM on both sides??

    Hi out there,
is there a known way to establish a logical standby database on 10g, if both
sides are running with an ASM setup?
I've tried to create one out of a physical standby database (which is set up
and running w/o any problems), like a book suggested me to do.
    The procedure was:
    1. switch on supplemental logging
    2. prepare initiation parameters (for archive logging etc.) on both sides for
    logical stb.
    3. shut down the phyiscal standby
    4. alter database create logical standby controlfile as '<path>'; on the
primary, transfer the controlfile to the standby db. Here I had to use RMAN
to copy the controlfile into the ASM System, and modify the initfile/spfile
in order to use the controlfile. No problem so far.
    5. mount the standby database, alter database recover managed standby database
disconnect; -> At this point, the alert log complained about non-available
    datafiles.
    6. alter database activate standby database; --> fails ("needs recovery") due
    to last point.
The trouble is, the controlfile created at point 4 cointains wrong paths to
the datafiles. Since I can not have the same disk group name on the standby
system, and since ASM renames the stored datafiles by its own, the complaints
of point 5 are comprehensible, but nevertheless annoying.
I tried to backup a controlfile to trace and change the paths, but at after
mounting the standby with this controlfile and proceeding at point 5, the
system says "<path> is not a standby controlfile"
Is there a different way of creating a "Logical Standby Database with 10g+ASM
on both sides"? Metalink said nothing about LogStby and ASM.
Best regards and thanks in advance,
    Martin

I'm not sure if this will work but try:
    1. create trace control file (you did it)
    2. change paths (you did it)
    3. recrate control file (you did it)
... there was error occured during mount before
so mount database (not as standby)
    4. create standby control file (from recreated control file)
    5. shutdown instance, replace control file with new standby control file or replace the control filename in parameter file.
    6. mount as standby
    What happend?
Update: Tested on my side and it has worked fine... How about you?

  • Logical Standby Database - Doubts

    Hi everyone,
    I have a doubt about this view: dba_logstdby_unsupported;
This view shows up me 400 tables, so i understand that an operation DML on these tables won't be replicated in the other node?, or only the fields allowed will be replicated in the news record? or new record on these tables will be replicated if these records have NULL value in the fields doesn't allow.
Thank you very much if someone can help me with this doubts.
    Regards

This is what the documentation says:
If the primary database contains unsupported tables, SQL Apply automatically excludes these tables when applying redo data to the logical standby database.Source: Unsupported Tables

  • Running a physical standby database in noarchivelog mode

Primary Database: 2 node rac cluster, 11.2.0.2 GI and RDBMS
    Standby Database: single instance 11.2.0.2
    OS: AIX 7.1
    Hello,
I'm in the process of implementing a data guard standby system. To make this system simpler to admin, I want to run the standby database in NOARCHIVELOG mode. This standby is used only as a mirror of production (to be copied to a 3rd site for separate user activity) and will never be switched to active mode. Maintaining another set of archive logs seems to be redundant to me and another point of failure, so I want to disable archiving. I wanted to ask if any of the DG experts on the forums have ever had experience with this? Does anyone know if this is recommended? I've searched the Oracle Data guard documentation online... it says that the primary obviously needs to be in archive mode, but I'm not seeing anything specific about the standby. Please let me know if anyone has experience with this.
    Thanks

    Hello again;
If this is the case, then I have nothing to worry about here. Does that sound right to you?Yes.
    For this :
    b) monthly, shutdown this system and copy it to a 3rd site to host a separate set of business activityI would consider RMAN Duplicate in which case you may avoid the shutdown.
    And for this :
resync the "mirror" with productionAll you have to do if DEFER the primary to the standby, then ENABLE and Data Guard will catch up.
--- Will post a detailed example here in a moment.
Right at the first of the year they wanted to work on our Primary server room ( Power ). What I did was switchover to the Standby but I kept log_archive_dest_state_2 on the new primary set to DEFER. Then I shutdown
all the databases at the Primary site. At the end of work two days later I started the databases at the Primary site in standby mode. Switched log_archive_dest_state_2 to ENABLE. When the databases were back in SYNC
I did another switchover and it was done. I used TAF and none of the users even noticed.
    Best Regards
