About the volatile keyword

I am learning about the volatile keyword.
Does it depend on the VM whether the threads do cache its member variables into memory or not even if the volatile keyword is used? Because in my examlpe below the variable "b" is not volatile and it is beeing used in an infinite loop till some other thread change the variable to false. When it happens, the loop stops and I expected that the variable "b" would only be read once since it is not volatile and the loop would never stop.
Could somebody explain? :-)
public class VolatileExample {
    public VolatileExample(){
        T1 t1 = new T1();
        new Thread(t1, "T1").start();
        T2 t2 = new T2(t1);
        new Thread(t2, "T2").start();
    class T1 implements Runnable{
        public boolean b = true; // should be read once if not volatile?
        public T1(){
        public void run() {
            while(b){
                System.out.println("true");
                try {
                    Thread.sleep(1000);
                } catch (InterruptedException ex) {
            System.out.println("false");
    class T2 implements Runnable{
        private T1 r;
        public T2(T1 r){
            this.r = r;
        public void run() {
            try {
                Thread.sleep(5000);
                r.b = false; // Here is where I change the other thread´s variable to false
            } catch (InterruptedException ex) {
    public static void main(String[] args){
        new VolatileExample();
}

Thanks for your answer!
So a rule of thumb would be: "when sharing a variable among different threads, it should be declared volatile"?I wouldn't say that.
An absolute rule, however, is, "When sharing a variable among concurrently executing threads, if at least one of the threads will be writing that variable, and if at least one other thread needs to see the writer's update, then you *must* declare the variable volatile or synchronize all access to it."
That is a bare minimum, of course. By itself, it doesn't guarantee your data will be consistent in a multithreaded context.
I don't use volatile all that often, because all it does is make writes visible, provide a simple memory barrier, and provide atomicity for doubles and longs. Usually there are more complex requirements that lead to needing synchronization or the classes in java.util.concurrent, and then these end up giving me what volatile would have, plus more.

    Does JRockit support the volatile keyword? If yes, since what version of JRockit is it supported? Will it also be supported on JRockit for Linux.

    the Linux builds of JRockit.
    However, the actual behaviour of "volatile" hasn't been that well
    defined until Java 5.0, so our interpretation of what volatile should
    mean may or may not have been consistent with SUN's interpretation of
    what volatile should mean.
    Have you been having problems with using volatile? What are you using
    it for in that case? Since volatile might not do what you think it
    does, using locking could be better...

  • About the "this" keyword

    there's something like this:
    public class MainFrame extends JFrame {
    PasswordPopup pp = new PasswordPopup(MainFrame.this);
    what does MainFrame.this refer to? the MainFrame itself?
    if so, what if I use a single "this" instead? thanks

    "this" refers to the MainFrame. It should be no different from jus writing "this". However if that line appears within an inner class, using just "this" would refer to the inner class, where MainFrame.this would refer to the outer MainFrame class.

  • Volatile Keyword

    I am confused with the keyword "volatile". Few questions.
    I have seen two different descriptions for this keyword.
    1) Processors store data in their own registers for more efficient use.In Multiprocessor environments, the "volatile" keyword will ensure that a piece of shared data is always picked up from the (common) memory location and not reused from the (private copy) register for that processor.
    If this is the case, then dont we require to use this keyword for all class level variables(static) ? Or does putting static keyword ensure this? (A static member is supposed to hold a common copy for all instances - how does it internally work in a multiprocessor environment?)
    Is it possible that an instance may be partly serviced by one processor and partly by another in a multiprocessor env? In that case, dont we need to declare all instance variables as "volaile"?
    2) "Volatile" keyword ensures that the data is "sequencially consistent" - meaning
    if we have --
    volatile int a = 5;
    volatile boolean flag = true;
    Then if flag is set to true, then a will already have been set to 5 always (this means this may not always be the case in the Runtime env, if the keyword is not volatile -- so in multithreading env..there can be problems if global variables are not "volatile"
    Am I on the right track? The two descriptions of "volatile" seem very different. Are they both correct? I also read that many JVMS dont implement this as of now..so where do we stand in the use\relevance of this keyword?
    Thanks,
    Mathew Samuel.

    If this is the case, then dont we require to use this
    keyword for all class level variables(static) ? Or
    does putting static keyword ensure this? (A static
    member is supposed to hold a common copy for all
    instances - how does it internally work in a
    multiprocessor environment?)First, lets correct one of your statements. You say, "A static member is supposed to hold a common copy for all instances" It may seem subtle, but a static variable is associated with the class, not any instance. There doesn't need to be any instances of a class for a static to exist. The point is that there is not a 'copy' for each instance.
    In a multi-threaded environment, each thread can cache it's own data. This is for performance. It takes time to keep the threads from interfering with each other.
    Is it possible that an instance may be partly serviced
    by one processor and partly by another in a
    multiprocessor env? In that case, dont we need to
    declare all instance variables as "volaile"?If you synchronize access to variables, you don't need to declare things as volatile. volatile isn't used all that often. Mainly, it's for certain situations where full synchrionization is not required.
    2) "Volatile" keyword ensures that the data is
    "sequencially consistent" - meaning
    if we have --
    volatile int a = 5;
    volatile boolean flag = true;I can't really confirm or deny this.

  • A problem about the policy of RMS which is added more than 500 principals

    Hello specialists ,
        I've a question about RMS , when I added more than about 500 principals (users & groups ) into a policy in the RMS , it will report an error for any operation about the policy , and I find the error message as followed (for theconvenience, I paste all of the logs in the weblogic).
       We have tested all of our environments : Weblogic , JBoss , Websphere , each of them  makes the same mistake . those operations include : try to open the documents protected by this kind of policies , to disable or enable the policies, to look the detail from the "adminui" . when decreasing the principals for this kind of policy to almost 450 (I am not sure the clearly number) with java code , the results will be ok .
       So anyone can help me ? It's really very important for us , becuase our customer refused to pay the left money of this project till this problem is resolved . and I have reported this problem to the Enterprise Support in Indian (the case is :181916446), but , obviously , it seems they are burning my patience  . At the same time , I think it's a problem of the product , I think the SQL is really very bad ,at least , not so good .
       Any help will be very appreciated !

  • Updating the photo count for multiple locations of the same keyword

    Is it possible to use a keyword on a photo but have it update other copies of the same keyword in lightroom 2.4? I would like to have linked keywords if this is possible.
    To help understand this better, here is a rough example or what I would like to do.
    I want a generic list of players which in its entirety will contain thousands of names. Then I also want to break those players down into their respective teams/leagues that they played on. This will make the list of players easier to manage when I only have to deal with one team at a time. I also want to seperate by seasons but that is too much for this example. So in my example I have a player who has played in both the AHL and NHL (Daniel Briere).
    Now when I am going through my Flyers photos, I want to keyword a Briere photo. So I drag over the NHL/Philadelphia Flyers/Briere, Daniel keyword. So this gives that keyword a count of 1. I also would like the Briere keyword under Players get updated with a 1. Right now, it won't. How can I link those two? Also, when I go into my Phantoms photos, I see another picture of Briere, I would want to drag over the Teams/AHL/Philadelphia Phantoms/ Briere, Daniel keyword. This would in return update that keyword with a count of 1 and update the Players/Briere, Daniel keyword with a 2 since I now have a single NHL and a single AHL photo of him. Of course I need this behavior to be hierarchial. So if I have a photo of Briere in street clothes, I would want to use the Players/Briere, Daniel keyword. This would then give me a count of 3 but it won't updated the values in NHL and AHL keywords since the Players keyword is in a higher/different location.
    Can this be done?
    Thanks,
    Bob
    P.S. If I made this too confusing, please let me know and I'll try to explain better.
    example of what my keyword list would look like:
    Players
        Briere, Daniel
    Teams
        NHL
            Philadelphia Flyers
                Briere, Daniel
        AHL
            Philadelphia Phantoms
                Briere, Daniel

    You cannot link keywords as you want. Each of those keywords is independent - they just share the same text.
    You can create smart collections which group all occurrences of that name. This is obviously duplication, so you would do it only when you need.
    I suggest you don't try to get too clever with using your keyword hierarchy to represent teams. Instead, use one keyword per individual person, a separate one for each team.You could have a top level keyword teams, and another for people, but don't structure things as you suggest as it leads to confusion about people. When you need to look at one team, use a smart collection that looks for images with Team X, Shot in year Y - the Library Filter  will then break the items down by keyword.

  • Warning  on use of the 'subtable' keyword

    I have previously given advice on this list about the use of the "subtable" keyword which could lead to kern pairs being unavailable. If you have used this keyword, please review the following.
    Background.
    Class pairs in a kern feature are compiled as a lookup with a single subtable. The representation of the class pairs for a subtable looks like a big Excel spreadsheet, with all the left side pairs as the titles of the rows, and all the right-side pairs as the titles of the columns, and the kern pair values in the fields. As a result, every left side pair you name is kerned against every right side pair you name. Obviously, most of the fields are 0; there are non-zero values only where you specified a class pair kern value. Less obviously, all glyphs not named in a right side class are automatically assigned to right side class 0. This means that every left side class in the subtable is kerned against every glyph in the font ( with most of the kern values being 0).
    If you have a lot of left and right side class pairs, this subtable can get so large some of the offset values in the compiled lookup exceed the limit of 64K, and the lookup can't be built. The 'subtable' keyword is provided to help with this problem. It forces the class pair lookup to start a new subtable at the point where you put the 'subtable' keyword. If you have any degree of order in your class kern pair definitions, each of the subtables will then have fewer left and right classes, and the overall size of the lookup is smaller.
    My advice on using this keyword is:
    a) use it only if you have to because of a size oveflow problem, and
    b) there is not much use in trying to be smart about where you put it; it is usually simplest to put the first keyword more or less in the middle of the list of the class kern pairs. If this does not shrink the kern lookup enough, then put another 'subtable' keyword in the middle of each half of the class kern pair list, and so on.
    However, I omitted an important warning:
    c) any left side class can be used only within a single subtable.
    This is because each left side class in a subtable is by definition kerned against every right side class, and hence every glyph in the font because of class 0. It follows that a program looking for a kern pair will never look past the first subtable with a left side class containing the left side glyph. Moral: any left side class can be used only within a single subtable. If you put kern class pairs with that left side class in a subsequent subtable ( e.g; after a subtable break), those kern class pairs will never be seen by any program.
    My thanks to Karsten Luecke, whose struggle with an exanple of this problem showed that my previous advice on this list was incomplete.

    You say you're extending JTable but I see no hint of that.
    public class SpecialisedJTable extends JTable
        public SpecialisedJTable(TableModel model)
            super(model);
        public SpecialisedJTable()
            super();
    }

  • The this keyword

    I have a vague idea what the this keyword means. Its something to do with inheritance but I'm not sure how this works. For example I've just seen a program as shown below:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.text.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Clock extends JApplet
    implements Runnable {
    private volatile Thread clockThread = null;
    DateFormat formatter; //Formats the date displayed
    String lastdate; //String to hold date displayed
    Date currentDate; //Used to get date to display
    Color numberColor; //Color of numbers
    Font clockFaceFont;
    Locale locale;
    public void init() {
    setBackground(Color.white);
    numberColor = Color.red;
    locale = Locale.getDefault();
    formatter =
    DateFormat.getDateTimeInstance(DateFormat.FULL,
    DateFormat.MEDIUM, locale);
    currentDate = new Date();
    lastdate = formatter.format(currentDate);
    clockFaceFont = new Font("Sans-Serif",
    Font.PLAIN, 14);
    resize(275, 25);
    public void start() {
    if (clockThread == null) {
    clockThread = new Thread(this, "Clock");
    clockThread.start();
    public void run() {
    Thread myThread = Thread.currentThread();
    while (clockThread == myThread) {
    repaint();
    try {
    Thread.sleep(1000);
    } catch (InterruptedException e){ }
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    String today;
    currentDate = new Date();
    formatter =
    DateFormat.getDateTimeInstance(DateFormat.FULL,
    DateFormat.MEDIUM, locale);
    today = formatter.format(currentDate);
    g.setFont(clockFaceFont);
    //Erase and redraw
    g.setColor(getBackground());
    g.drawString(lastdate, 0, 12);
    g.setColor(numberColor);
    g.drawString(today, 0, 12);
    lastdate = today;
    currentDate = null;
    public void stop() {
    clockThread = null;
    Now the line : clockThread = new Thread(this, "Clock");
    What does the this keyword do here?

    Please use code tags as described in Formatting tips

  • Could you please explain about the  chain and end chain and module

    hi experts
    could you please explain about the  chain and end chain and module keywords?

    Hi Naresh,
    Conditions for Multiple Screen Fields
    To ensure that one or more PAI modules are only called when several screen fields meet a particular condition, you must combine the calls in the flow logic to form a processing chain. You define processing chains as follows:
    CHAIN.
    ENDCHAIN.
    All flow logic statements between CHAIN and ENDCHAIN belong to a processing chain. The fields in the various FIELD statements are combined, and can be used in shared conditions.
    CHAIN.
    FIELD: <f1>, <f 2>,...
    MODULE <mod1> ON CHAIN-INPUT|CHAIN-REQUEST.
    FIELD: <g1>, <g 2>,...
    MODULE <mod2> ON CHAIN-INPUT|CHAIN-REQUEST.
    ENDCHAIN.
    The additions ON CHAIN-INPUT and ON CHAIN-REQUEST work like the additions ON INPUT and ON REQUEST that you use for individual fields. The exception is that the module is called whenever at least one of the fields listed in a preceding FIELD statement within the chain meets the condition. So <mod1> is called when one of the fields <fi> meets the condition. <mod2> is called when one of the fields <f i> or <g i> meets the condition.
    Within a processing chain, you can combine individual FIELD statements with a MODULE statement to set a condition for a single field within the chain:
    CHAIN.
    FIELD: <f1>, <f 2>,...
    FIELD <f> MODULE <mod1> ON INPUT|REQUEST|*-INPUT
    |CHAIN-INPUT|CHAIN-REQUEST.
    MODULE <mod2> ON CHAIN-INPUT|CHAIN-REQUEST.
    ENDCHAIN.
    The module <mod1> is called when screen field <f> meets the specified condition for individual fields. <mod2> is called when one of the fields <fi> or <f> meets the condition. If you use the addition ON CHAIN-INPUT or ON CHAIN-REQUEST with FIELD <f>, the condition also applies to the entire chain and module <mod1> and <mod2> are both called.
    In cases where you apply conditions to various combinations of screen fields, it is worth setting up a separate processing chain for each combination and calling different modules from within it.
    The functions of the FIELD statement for controlling data transport also apply when you use processing chains. Within a processing chain, screen fields are not transported until the FIELD statement. Processing chains also have another function for the FIELDS statements that they contain. This is described in the section on validity checks.
    Ex:
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    MODULE CANCEL AT EXIT-COMMAND.
    CHAIN.
    FIELD: INPUT1, INPUT2.
    MODULE MODULE_1 ON CHAIN-INPUT.
    FIELD INPUT3 MODULE MODULE_* ON *-INPUT.
    MODULE MODULE_2 ON CHAIN-REQUEST.
    ENDCHAIN.
    FIELD INPUT1 MODULE C1 AT CURSOR-SELECTION.
    CHAIN.
    FIELD: INPUT2, INPUT3.
    MODULE C2 AT CURSOR-SELECTION.
    ENDCHAIN.
    MODULE CURSOR AT CURSOR-SELECTION.

  • Shoukd the 'final' keyword should be used on all input parameters?

    In my very limited experience as a java programmer have never seen this done any where. Except in the java.lang.Math class which has a final variable, of type double, called PI. As pi is not a value that should change during the execution of a program, though this is not passed in as a parameter.
    However, on a new project, a co-worker is proposing the use of the 'final' keyword on all input parameters as a standard. He has about 5 years experience of maintaining java systems and is putting this suggestion forward as in the past people have overwritten values passed in as parameters causing confusion. Personally I don't see why this is such a major issue if one reads the code of the called programs.
    I would be grateful if anyone has seen this done before, or has any views on the advantages or disadvantages of this.
    Thanks in advance,
    LS

    I'm sorry, but this point is irrelevant. There are lots of final fields (but not that many final parameters) in Java, BTW. Every field you declare in an interface is automatically final, for example.

    IMHO, it's definately not a major issue. It is simply being restrictive, to be restrictive. The guy may have "five years experience", but he sounds lazy, to me. Besides, the first thing I would do in that case (if final were the default), would be something like this:
    public void myMethod (final String a, final int b) {
      String myA = a;
      String myB = b;
    }And now, what has he won by making it final? It simply added some up front work for some people, with no real added value. Also, if I had to retroactively change my code, I would change it as follows:
    //Original Code
    public void myMethod (String myA, int myB) {
      String myA = a;
      String myB = b;
    // New code
    public void myMethod (final String a, final int b) {
      String myA = a;
      String myB = b;
    }That way, you wouldn't even have to worry about changing anything else about your method, as the variables actually used in the rest of the body will remain the same.
    I would be grateful if anyone has seen this done before, or has any views on the advantages or disadvantages of this.The only thing declaring the parameter final does, is it prevents you from assigning a new value to the variable. The instance that parameter references (as long as it is not immutable to begin with) can still be manipulated. I.E. except in some very narrow, and specific, cases, no value added, simply a restriction that exists to be restrictive.

  • Want to remove the metadata/keywords panes... and it looks like I should be able to!

    But I can't, and it makes me sad. Tempt me by using the same tab motif of the palettes within Photoshop, where tabs can be torn off into new panels, and removed for the workspace, and then cruelly deny me tabbed palette functionality.
    This is the second of two observations about Bridge, both of which are focusing on the use of inappropriate UI conventions for functions within the application. Don't make a field look like it can accept typed input if it can't. Don't make a thing look like a tabbed palette if it isn't one. There are other UI conventions you can use that won't cause the confusion (but of course, the better option in both observations is to make the things in fact what they look like they are.)

    Deebs, that hides the whole pane. I want the metadata/keywords gone, but still see the favorites.
    And, as a UI designer, I want the UI to behave like the UI implies it will behave. They appear to be tabbed palettes but do not behave like tabbed palettes.
    So you may want to keep your sarcasm to yourself.

  • Hi All, I have question about the iMac operating system. I have the last updated. The problem when I manage the place of the folder windows they are all mixing up. I mean they not on the place where I left them. how to set they stay on the same place. Tks

    Hi All, I have question about the iMac operating system. I have the last updated. The problem when I manage the place of the folder windows they are all mixing up. I mean they not on the place where I left them. how to set they stay on the same place? I know there are different possibilities to set.
    I tried but it not helped for me. What I can do? How and where can set this they stay on their place?
    Thanks.

    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • The "Volatile" Puzzle

    Need a simple example code that works differently with and without "volatile".
    I understand the need for 'volatile' keyword and what it does in java. However, I also vaguely remember reading that this is no longer necessary. i.e., the compiler and jvm of these days takes care of local caching and memory writes very smartly. I tried several examples to see if I can reproduce a case where existence of 'volatile' really makes a difference. But, all my attempts went in vain.
    Here is an example:
    package volatilekw;
    public class Thread1 extends Thread{
    volatile int answer = 0;
    public void setAnswer(int i) {
    answer = i;
    @Override
    public void run() {
    for (int i=0;i<100;i++) {
    System.out.print(answer);
    try {
    sleep(10);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    // TODO Auto-generated catch block
    e.printStackTrace();
    package volatilekw;
    public class Thread2 extends Thread{
    private Thread1 t = null;
    public Thread2(Thread1 t) {
    this.t = t;
    @Override
    public void run() {
    for (int i=0;i<100;i++) {
    try {
    sleep(10);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    // TODO Auto-generated catch block
    e.printStackTrace();
    if (i == 1)
    t.setAnswer(1);
    package volatilekw;
    public class Gotgo {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    Thread1 t1 = new Thread1();
    Thread2 t2 = new Thread2(t1);
    t1.start();
    t2.start();
    Irrespective of whether the "answer" is volatile or not, the output is same with JDK 1.6. I ran several times and even tried decrementing sleep value. If my understanding goes right, the writes of thread2 on answer might not be visible to thread t1 until it caches it. But, this is never the case.
    Is there a good example that demonstrate that 'volatile' does make a difference? I am looking for a piece of code when run with and without 'volatile' gives two different outputs.

Without volatile, some things can happen, depending on timing, the OS's scheduler, the underlying hardware, other processes running, the JVM implementation, etc., but there's no guarantee that those things ever will happen. However, it's generally bad if they do, so volatile is one way of ensuring that they don't.
    I understand the need for 'volatile' keyword and what it does in java. However, I also vaguely remember reading that this is no longer necessary. i.e., the compiler and jvm of these days takes care of local caching and memory writes very smartly.Nope. The use-case for volatile is still there.
    Volatile was never strictly necessary. We've always been able to accomplish what volatile does by syncing every access to the variable in question. However, when all you need is that all threads see the same copy, and you don't have other atomicity issues to deal with, volatile can save some runtime overhead relative to syncing, and, more importantly, it can make for less cluttered code.
    I tried several examples to see if I can reproduce a case where existence of 'volatile' really makes a difference. But, all my attempts went in vain.Try a multi-cpu box, with not much else happening on it, create as many threads as there are CPUs, and have all threads run a loop from 0 to 10,000 or 100,000,00 or millions that does nothing more than x++ on some shared member variable.
    With volatile, and N threads and a count up to M, you'll see a final value of N x M.
    Without volatile, you might see a value less than N x M.

  • The Internet Keyword Search is no longer functioning

    Previously when I would enter something like "[Actor Name] imdb" into the location bar it would take me to that page. I didn't set this up as a custom keyword search so I assume it was using the default service. Now when I do it it just takes me to the Google search results. keyword.enabled is True so I tried resetting the Keyword.URL location in about:config but the value is blank when I Reset it.

    I Have that SAME problem! Aaargh its really annoying!
    I really hope they fix it soon because that was my FAVORITE thing about the old Firefox...
    Please fix it soon guys I believe in you!!

  • Applying the wrong keywords

    I am working on an Ap library [only 2200 images] and put in a keyword just fine in 50 of them then did a find and tried to put in a keyword to about 12 images and the wrong one came up = i.e., I was putting in the word "Ode" to the keyword and the word "duplicate" was applied....I cleared all KW and tried again, same thing.  I quite Aperture and restarted and repaired permissions and tried again = this time it came in "Original" -- any ideas on what is going on???  And how to fix it.

    I have been doing keywords but never had this happen....I have deleted all Key words and have gone into the Keyword list and deleted all the ones that are sets and limited it to the 7-8 I want to use... I did use Duplicate Annihilator  to get rid of some dups and it did that - I have since quit that, quit App and also repaired permissions - am now repairing database.
    The Repairing Database seems to have worked = or else deleting all the old Keywords did....thanks much
