  • How can I make text substitutions learn the correct capitalization of an acronym?

I love the text substitutions function in the Mac OS, and the auto grammar and spelling corrections are usually really useful, but there is one particular instance that is driving me insane. In my job, I end up using the acronym "TAs" (for "teaching assistants") all the time. Mac constantly autocorrects this to "Tas." I have tried adding "tas" to text substitutions in the settings and telling it to substitute "TAs," but it just autocorrects my substitution to "Tas." I have tried telling the OS to learn the spelling "TAs," but that hasn't worked either. I don't want to turn off capitalization correction altogether because I usually find it useful. Is there a way to fix this one word? The only workaround I have found is that it doesn't correct me when I pluralize with an apostrophe (as in "TA's"), but I am really not a fan of that.
I am running Mavericks 10.9.5, if that helps.

    Hi Laura_mac !
Does it depend on the application?
    Using Yosemite I added
    tas to Keyboard ====> Text
    so that TAs becomes TAs
    It worked via Safari 8.03
    via Pages and Numbers (3.5.2)
It did not work in BBEdit
    nor Firefox
    nor Word
If you do a lot of text substitution I found the following app quite helpful.  You can customize to a great degree.

  • Tagging Acronyms/Abbreviations in Indesign for an accessible pdf

I am trying to figure out the proper way to tag an acronym in an InDesign file to be properly read aloud in accessible pdf. Currently as it stands, the acronymns are being read as words instead of individual letters ( ex. APR is trying to be pronounced as 1 word). The only way I can think of is to outline that text and give it alt text, but this doesn't seem to be the most efficient way, especially since this acronym reoccurs throught the document in the middle of paragraphs. Also, when this is tagged, should it be the full phrase rather than the acronym that is read aloud, such as APR vs Annual Percentage Rate, even if it is defined elsewhere in the document what it stands for?

I understand why you need updated running headers in your book. To a sighted reader these serve as a guide to where you are and help you find things quickly.  In addition, if you are exporting your data to XML or HTML from the tagged PDF it would also be important to have these in the proper location.
But for accessibility purposes, it doesn't have to be there because the screen reader reads everything in linear order, line by line.  No one is looking at the page.  A user listening to the screen reader read the page is going to hear this heading, just before the actual word itself. So they will hear the first word on the page twice.  It's not the end of the world if it's there, but such headings are not necessary for accessibility unless they are not repetitive and contain information that is not otherwise available.
So I would say, fine if you need them or want them there, it's just one word.
I think you should try exporting your book to PDF (or even just a chapter of the book) and look at the tags panel in Acrobat to see if you are getting the result you want.  I can't tell you exactly what you should do to get those results, you are using a plug-in I don't have.
I can tell you I didn't have to add the headers to any article at all, they just automatically export if the other articles in the file are added and you don't select the header style option "not for export as XML."
You may not experience the same results with your plug-in, but I think it will probably work the same way.
Give it a try and best of luck.

  • Searching for Acronyms

    Hi,
This may have been answered previously but couldn't find answer. Am using RH7 WebHelp. I have many pages with acronyms in title and body. Searching in RoboHelp by the acronym brings no results, except for a couple of Word docs and .pdfs that have the acronym.
Is there any way for users to be able to search using an acronym? I am upgrading to RoboHelp 8 and am not sure if this is possible with new version.
    Thanks!

    Hi there
There's a little used feature in RoboHelp that may help with this. You might open the Index designer and list the acronyms there.
Just tell your users it's "Enhanced Search". Not sure who coined that term. LOL

  • What's the transaction code for the acronym explainer?

I found this once but for the life of me can't find it again.
There's a transaction code for a utility that tells you what  SAP acronyms/abbreviations stand for.  Anyone care to enlighten me?

Brilliant.  STERM was what I was thinking of but SAPTERM seems a little more 'user-friendly' (although I use that term very loosely with anything SAP-related).

  • What does the acronym PH stand for in the article id number

Trying to figure out what the different acronyms stand for in the article id number. I know HT stands for how to and TS stands for trouble shooting. What does PH and HE stand for.

PH refers to product help; these articles are the same as the product's content in the Help Viewer.
HE articles describe navigating Apple's support system itself.

  • JDBC is the Acronym of Java Database Connectivity - Yes / No?

    Hi,
JDBC is the Acronym of Java Database Connectivity - Yes / No?
I am little bit confused. I got this question in an Inteview.
I support yes. But some of the compitiors say no.
    What will the real answer?

Really? Even Sun contradicts themselves here:
    (2002) http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/jdbc/
    and (more importantly) here:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/glossary.html#JDBC
    although here:
    (2001) http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/jdbc/getstart/intro.html
I think it is simply silly for the latter to state that "JDBC is the trademarked name and is not an acronym" -- Oh really? JDBC doesn't stand for anything? It is all caps just because it is a trademark then? hmmm.
I'm certain the real answer of what it stands for may have been lost long ago. However, I doubt that the interviewer meant the question to be a trick and was looking for "Java DataBase Connectivity"
For every instance that you find that it doesn't stand for anything, I can show you 2 instances (from Sun or an employee) where they use "Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)".
P.S. Ryan Craig may be the final authority on this...

  • When I bring my InDesign PDF into Acrobat, the automated reader won't read acronyms!!!

I'm trying to make my InDesign doc 508 Compliant. There are a lot of acronyms in this document. After I've exported my PDF and open it in reader I use the "Read Out Loud" option to make sure everything sounds correct. Whenever the reader comes to an acronym such as DOE or DUD it wants to read them as regular words (doe, dud). How can I tell it to read out each letter individually?
    Please help!
    Thanks guys/gals,

It may be because both DOE and DUD are, in fact, actual words. I inserted hair spaces between the characters, but Preview still pronounced them as words; inserting Thin spaces made it speak out the individual letters. (I just realized I didn't test the in-between 1/6th spaces -- try them.)
I tested with Preview, so it's possible Acrobat doesn't do this the same way. But if it does: it seems you cannot 'hide' the spaces using negative tracking. If you try this, the letters will again be spoken as words.
(Ed.) If these are acronyms, shouldn't you write them as D.O.E. and D.U.D.? That makes it clear to the casual reader you are not using it, like, "This rumor was a total DUD, dude!"

  • How do I remove the acronym tags from menu items in Business Catalyst?

Hello, can anybody answer this for me please? Not having any success googling or foruming it so far.
How do I remove the acronym tags from menu items in Business Catalyst?
    Thanks in advance
    Grant

These are titles and in the dynamic menu will be the item description per item.
These are actually important though and you do not really want to remove them but make them better and reword them other then the same as the link test. These are good for the user experience as well as SEO. A bot knowing a description of a link and where it is going coupled with the URL's and the title of an anchor are all important aspects of your sites SEO.

  • Adding replacement text for acronyms using the SDK

    All
I have an existing C++ plugin for Acrobat Pro that walks through documents page by page doing different things (e.g. changing annotations) on each page.
As part of an effort to make out PDF files "accessible" I have an issue.
One of things that I have been asked to do is to look at creating PDF "replacement text" for a list of acronyms as they occur in a document. I believe the optimal outcome would be to somehow make the acronyms as "marked-content" and created "replacement text" for the marked-content (The marked-content being an acronym).
I have been looking at the core API, PDFEdit, and PDSEdit. It looks like PDFEdit would be the set of tools that might be able to do this, but I don't think it will. It doesn't seem like there is a way to "mark content" using PDFEdit. If I was able to cerate the correct marked content, it looks like the there isn't a way to add "replacement text" for that marked content.
We are creating structured PDF files, so I looked at PDSEdit. It appears that it pretty easy to created alternate text for an element. However, the elements are usually entire paragraphs so I would have to create "alternate text" for the entire paragraph just to have replacement for an acronym in the paragraph.
Playing with the "content streams" is something new to me, so I am wondering if it looks like I have considered all of the options?
    Thanks

    Leonard
Looking at PDSEdit, it appears that I have to create replacement text for entire element. Our elements are entire paragraphs for the most part. I was thinking that I couldn't just provide replacement text for a single word in the paragraph and I would have to provide replacement text for the entire paragraph since there is only 1 replacement text per element.
Maybe I didn't think about this enough (I shouldn't be allowed to talk out loud on Fridays). If I could split an existing element into 3 elements (before acronym, acronym, after acronym), I could avoid building replacement text for the entire paragraph. Or maybe I can created marked content with PDSEdit as a separate structure element? Not sure I can do that.
Do you think I can do what I want to do with PDSEdit?
I guess I am struggling a little to understand how the content streams relate to the items in the basic PDF structure (e.g. replacement text for marked content) and the document structure.
    Sorry about rambling..
    Thanks

  • COPA Acronym - What does it really mean???

    Hello All,
I have a very simple question that has been often addressed to me for which I truly can't provide a bona-fide answer to. That question is "What does the acronym CO-PA actually stand for"?
I know the universally accepted response would be Profitability Analysis but what does the CO portion of the acronym really stand for? Is it Cost/Operability or Cost of Operations or what????
    Thanks!!

CO stands for Controlling and PA stands for Profitability Analyis. So the combination of CO-PA stands for Controlling-Profitability Analysis.
Profitability Analysis is one of the sub-modules, along with Cost Center Accounting (CCA) and others, that's part of the Controlling module in R3/ECC. Controlling is pretty much Managerial Accounting (as opposed to FI - Financials which is Financial Accounting).

  • Acronym Issue due to IR column headings in  InitCap

    Hello ,
I am using an IR report with around 140 columns.
Some of the column heading are acronyms .However the IR automatically generates them in InitCap.
How can I override this ?
I can go to column attributes and change the heading but then since my report has more than 100 columns; all the columns are not displayed in report attributes for editing.
Appreciate any pointers/suggestions in this regard.
    Thanks,
    Deepa

    Hi,
you can get this done in 2 ways:
1 - Change the query to add another column and the re-generate the report
2 - If changing query is not possible, you can change the report it self for adding extra field. If you look at the code, it will be more like normal ABAP code. you can easily modify it (If you are ABAPer) for your additional requirements.
    thnx,
    ags.

    Gerald,
lucky for you today is my BPX forum answering day ;-). All kidding aside thank you for your feedback. It is important for us to keep this dialog going to improve the methodology.
As for the content of the pre-project phase - each organization has its own process for pre-project phase. Unfortunately PMI PMBOK does not elaborate on what should be done prior to the project start. The second version of PMI Program Management and Portfolio Management standard may give better guidance for projects that are part of larger program or that are managed as part of larger portfolio. Take a look at that along with the PMBOK standard.
I'm sure you can find few places on the web that compare the PRINCE2 and PMBOK. The standards are very similar for Project Management, but for Program Management the MSP seems little better and more practical. The first version of PMI PgM Mgmt standard was more like a carbon copy of PMBOK with few small changes. Second version is better, but not quite there.
Pre-initiation interfaces are important for keeping the consistency with the pre-project activities and to leverage any input that may have been completed prior to chartering the project. ASAP takes this into consideration, we just need to ensure that we do not confuse people with our SAP speak and internal terms.
We distinguish the project kickoff and the actual solutioning kickoff which happens for the most part in Blueprint (though there are some deliverables we already complete in Project Prep as input to Blueprinting).
Solution Manager is not required to use ASAP, but we do recommend using it as through its use in project you are building foundation for solution operations in Run phase. You can manage blueprint and config without it, but in more complex landscapes it is easier with help that Solution Manager provides.
Let's keep this discussion going. I do not mind chatting here or in person being it at an event or over the phone. Next big event I'll be at is ASUG/SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando in May.
