Adding Devices to Work Group Manager Issues

When I want to add a group of computers to work group manager. Only half of them add with out issue. The other half freeze the application. One thing I noticed is the MAC addresses of the Macs that have the issue do not show up. After I manually type in the MAC addresses it works.

  • OSX Server 10.7 work group manager duplicating printers is OSX 10.7 MBP 15"

    Hello Everyone,
I run the mac environment for a K-12 school. We use open directory and work group manager to manage the environment. Its always worked great up until we got our new Macbook Pros, and now our managed printers are duplicating everytime a network user logs in.
Its crazy. 3 logins has resulted in 9 printers being pushed to the machine. Any ideas?
OSX Server build 11g63 managing Client OSX Build 11g63b.
    Regards,
    Carl

I think I resolved the issue by deleting the offending printers off the xserve and re-adding them 1 at a time.
Then i opened up OD/WGM and added the printers to the managed printers list 1 at a time. I'd add one, login to the client machine 3 times to make sure it stopped replicating, and move on to the next printer.

  • Work Group Manager Reports and Logs

Mac Manager maintains logs and display current activity information somewhat different that Work Group Manager. With Mac Manager we are able to quickly report for Activity Log, Disk Usage, Connected Machines, Printer Quotas, Workgroup by User, Computers, Checked Out Computers and user activity.
How can we duplicate such a report with Work Group Manager?
We are a school district that is 88% Macintosh and miss the reports and logs feature in Mac Manager (10.3.9).
Hope to hear and find a solution to this challenge.

  • Command line equivalent of Work Group Manager's export feature

    Hello everyone,
I am have a hard time upgrading from Lion Server to Mountain Lion Server, especially with Open Directory. What I wish to do, is to import the existing users and groups of an existing server running Lion Server into a new (fresh) Open Directory master created on another server that is running Mountain Lion Server.
I have tried several options. Those that did *not* work for me include:
Trying to make create a replica of the Lion Open Directory on the Mountain Lion Server
Trying to backup the OD of the Lion Server using slapconfig
What seems to work (for the moment), is to use the export feature of Work Group manager on Lion and to import the users/groups using the import feature of Mountain Lion Server app.
My question is: is there a command line way to do the export ? Since Work Group manager seems to be kind of deprecated in ML, I assume there must be some other way (i.e., from the command line) to do the user/group import and export.
    Thanks for your help !

Notice that the old Archive and Restore options are gone. To run a backup, run the slapconfig command along with the -backupdb option followed by a path to a folder to back the data up to:
    sudo slapconfig -backupdb /odbackups
To restore a database (such as from a previous version of the operating system where such an important option was actually present) use the following command (which just swaps backupdb with -restoredb)
    sudo slapconfig -restoredb /odbackups
    /usr/sbin/ServerBackup -cmd backup -source /

  • Problems with Active Directory Users showing as not found in Open Directory work group manager

I’m running a golden triangle setup with Open directory assigning group policy and authentication provide by active directory. In workgroup manager I can search through the AD and add users or computers to groups in OD workgroup manager. However when I save and refresh the users or computer appear as ‘not found’. Is there a reason for this?

    Hi Zero
It's very reassuring to know im not the only one having issues with this..
Im on my second re install of the server.. I like you have no wish to do another clean install as everything else is connected and it seems like the answer is probably very simple.
So today im going to re- run the terminal commands as layed out in the online guides.
However i was kinda hoping someone would be able to supply us with an answer.
    thanks

  • Why can I not see any newly created 'Groups' in 'Work Group Manager' on the client Mac at login?

Hi. Now, this issue has not been resolved since 10.6 Server. I have now upgraded to Mountain Lion and the issue still persists. I used to easily create Workgroups/Groups in 'WGM' and they would appear at login for those users who were part of that group. As it stands the old created groups appear ok and can be accessed selected at the point of logging in. The newly created groups don't show up at all. They all look good to go when looking at WGM. I have tried removing the Users from the groups and adding them again but there is no change. It is getting me so frustrated!
Why is this happening? Is there a quick fix for this?
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Hi. Now thats a hard one to pin point exactly.  I guess you mean Archiving the OD and exporting users and groups etc Yes this happened when we upgraded from 10.5.8 Server to 10.6 Server.
How do I go about fixing this in Mac OS X Server 10.8.4?  Do I have to go through all that again?  Will I lose any settings in doing so?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Work Group Manager (10.6.8) not showing Mac Book 4,1 clients

    Hi Folks,
Im having abit of an issue here after imaging 20 MacBooks (mostly 4,1 with some 3,1).  I used Deploy Studio to image the cart of 25 machines. The wokflow has each machine binding to OD and AD. The issue is the MacBooks are not showing up in WGM so i can apply the MCX settings. Only two have shown up so far and these are both the MacBook3,1.
    History:
I used the same image two weeks ago on 25 2009 MBP. This worked perfectly. All MBP showed up in WGM right away.MCX settings were applied and all is good.
    Problems
When i imaged the Macbook cart i found the Ethernet and Aiport names had switched around so the Login Window Profile would not work as it was attached to the Ethernet adaptor. I had to go into each Macbook delete both the Ethernet and AirPort Interfaces, recreate them and add the 802.1x (Login Profile ot the AirPort) to each MacBook. We use Login Profiles so students are forced to user their own AD accounts and authenticates to our wifi at the same time.
I think the the only two MacBooks which did not have this issue were the 2 MacBook3,1, these are also the same two which showed up in WGM right away.
When trying to manually the MacBook's to WGM, WGM said there was a machine with that IP or MAC address already added. The thing is i cant see it anywhere. Im even plugged into the same subnet as the workstations and i cant see them.
I am wondering if there is any hardware related issues with the MacBook4,1 which are causing the issue. Also, i wonder because i had to delete around the Ethernet and Airport Adaptors if this caused the issue. Yet I dont know how to fix it.
Is there a hidden file or Databse i can find the Hostnames and delete them, then re add them?
    Troubleshooting:
    Inspector is turned on.
I have disjoined and rejoined the MacBooks (a sample) to OD and another OD at another campus
Tried to manually add the cleints
    Reboot
Manually added the MCX settings, but they are wiped out each time i log out and back in again.
Tried accesing WGM from different OSX servers and OSs, 10.6, 10.8.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    a.

Yes, it will run Snow Leopard. See the link below for requirements and ordering info.

  • Log in option using Work Group Manager to see all network users

I am getting different login options with my network of 20 iMacs, yet they are all set-up the same way using WorkGroup Manager. I would like the option of having all of the user names displayed on the login screen. I work at a small high school, and this just saves me time and pain. All of these iMacs are a member of the same group, and they all have the same login settings. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Workgroup Manager or more precisely MCX manged preferences are not really supported for Mavericks running Macs but are for Mountain Lion and earlier.
Looking at your example screen captures it looks like the working one is Lion or Mountain Lion, and the non-working one is Mavericks which would be consistent with the above explanation.
The recommended way of pushing settings like this now is to use Profile Manager which supports Mavericks and Lion/Mountain Lion clients.

  • Work Group Manager Client side setup.

In Workgroup Manager I have added computers by name and made one big computer group. Users can login on these iMacs, but none of the other settings I apply to this group in WGM save to these clients, e.g. printer settings, login, dock, etc.
I'm obviously missing a step....anyone have any idea what that might be?
    Thanks
(I'm using Mavericks all round FYI)

I am configuring settings by group, as in computer group. All of the iMacs in the lab are members of the group.
What did you mean by this?
There are user groups and computer groups. You should have both established in order to apply configurations to a group at a time.
Let's say I only wanted Safari in the dock for anyone accessing an iMac (couldn't think of a better example). Are you saying I would have this setting for each group the user is a member of (in my example case class of 2016) and the same for that iMacs group (computer lab)?
    Thanks for all this help!

  • Work Group Manager ERROR when trying to create a group

    i have the following hardware:
    Model Name: Xserve G5
    Model Identifier: RackMac3,1
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.1)
    Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 6 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.15 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.1.7f2
i have server admin setup on this machine, this machine is bound to AD
When i open up WGM and go to groups and try to create a group i receive the following error...
    Got Unexpected error
Error of type eDSNoStdMappingAvailable (-14140) on line 1189 of /SourceCache/WorkgroupManager/WorkgroupManager-319.2.2/PMMUGMainView.mm
I have no idea where to start with this..

Just to be clear - what domain are you trying to create the group in?
Are you trying to create an AD via WGM because you can't feed changes upwards to AD.
If you're trying to create a group either locally or in OD then that should work as long as you are authenticated. One gotcha in OD is that you can't create a group with the same name as the AD you are bound to but I'm pretty sure trying to do that gives you an intelligible error.
    HTH,
    =Tod
PS There are also OD specific groups in the OS X Server forums where you might get more eyes on your question as this forum is for Xserve specific issues.

  • I am using 10.6.8 and I cannot get an Imac to appear in workgroup manager, the mac is bound to both AD and OD. I have removed the bindings, rebuilt the mac and also removed it from bot system but still it does not appear in OD in work group manager.

I have a mac which is connected to a network and is bound to both OD and AD with no issues on my server when I try to manage it through Workgroup manager it does not appear.
I have unbound it , removed it from both systems completely and even rebuilt it but it still does not appear in WGM.

If your server is 10.6 and your client is 10.7 you'll have to add it manually to WGM
via mac address.  10.7 clients don"t automatically appear in 10.6 server wgm

  • Scheduling users from work group manager

I am curious how much control can you have in scheduling users or groups to when they can log on to a machine. I have a biology lab and I wanting to implement group policies that would allow/disallow login based on user ID or Group ID. Is anyone doing this with success. What I am thinking of doing in the future is create user based on a text file and then they will only be allowed to login if there are in a certain sections hours. I think I could group the users into section groups and apply the schedule to the group.
    Thanks...

  • Change UID Range in work group manager 10.8

    Hi there,
I about to implement an Open directory branch with 4 offices having 1 Master and 3 slaves but i need to have on each office different UID of users, is there any way to change the UID range so every time that one of my helpdesk guys create a user get the correct UID range that belongs to his office?
Hope you guys can put mi in the correct path.
    Thanks.

Dare I ask why the UID is important?  It plays much less of a role now that GUID is implemented.  It is mostly transparent.  Are you using it for purely organizational purposes?
The only way you will likely be able to do this is through a shell script to add the account outside of Apple's tools.  However, you could build the script to query the directory, get a current count of users in the current prefix, and then increment up one.  Values needed are really real name (John Doe), shortname (jdoe), password, and email (if different than shortname).  All other values can be inferred from there.
Investigate dscl and then if you want to, use Xcode to build a GUI app to automate the process.

  • The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Profile and Device Manager Issues

The following article also applies to issues after re-setting the severs' hostname. It also applies to situations where re-setting the Code Signing Certifictateas described by Apple has not resolved the issue.
    Hello,
I have been plagued with Profile Manager and Device Manager issues since day one.
I would like to share my experience and to suggest a way how to resolve issues such as device cannot be enrolled or Code Signing Certificate not accepted.
I shall try to be as brief as possible, just giving an overview of the steps that resolved my issues. The individual steps have been described elsewhere in this forum. For users who have purchased commercial SSL certs the following may not apply.
In my view many of these issues are caused by missing or faulty certificates. So let us first touch on the very complex matter of certificates.
Certificates come in many flavours such as CA (Certificate Authority), Code Signing Certificate, S/MIME and Server Identification.
(Mountain?) Lion Server creates a so-called Intermediate CA certificate (IntermediateCA_hostname_1") and Server Identification Certificate ("hostname") when it installs first. This is critical for the  operation of many server functionalities, including Open Direcory. These certs together with the private/public keys can be found in your Keychain. Profile  and Device Manager may need a Code Signing Certificate.
The most straightforward way to resolve the Profile Manaher issues is in my view to reset the server created certicates.
The bad news is that this procedure involves quite a few steps and at least 2 hours of your precious time because it means creating a fresh Direcory Master.
I hope that I have not forgotten to mention an important step. Readers' comments and addenda are welcome.
I shall outline a sensible strategy:
    1. Clone your dysfunctional server to an external harddrive (SuperDuper does a reliable job)
    2. Start the server fom the clone and shut down ALL services.
    3. It may be sensible to set up a root user access.
    4. Back-up all user data such as addess book, calendar and other data that you *may* need to set up your server.
    5. Open Workgroup Manager and export all user and workgroup accounts to the drive that you using to re-build your server (it may cause problems if you back-up to an external drive).
    6. Just in case you may also want to back-up the Profile Manager database and erase user profiles:
In Terminal (this applies to Lion Server - paths may be diferent in Mountain Lion !)
    Backup: sudo pg_dump -U _postgres -c device_management > $HOME/device_management.sql
    Erase database:
    sudo /usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh
    7. Note your Directory (diradmin) password for later if you want to re-use it.
    8. Open Open Server Admin and demote OD Master to Standalone Directory.
    9. In Terminal delete the old Certificate Authority
    sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
This step is crucial because else re-building you OD Master will fail.
    9. Go back to Server Admin and promote the Standalone Directory to OD Master. You may want to use the same hostname.
    10. When the OD Master is ready click on Overview and check that the LDAP and Keberos Realm reflect your server's hostname.
    11. Go back to Workgroup Manager and re-import users and groups.
NOTE: passwords are not being exported. I do not know how to salvage user passwords. (Maybe passwords can be recovered by re-mporting an OD archive - comments welcome! ).
    12. Go to Server App and reset passwords and (not to forget) user homefolder locations, in particular if you want to login from a network account!
If the home directory has not been defined you cannot login from a network account.
    13. You may now want to restore Profile Manager user profiles in Terminal. Issue the following commands:
    sudo serveradmin stop devicemgr
    sudo serveradmin start postgres
    sudo psql -U _postgres -d device_management -f $HOME/device_management.sql
    sudo serveradmin start devicemgr
    14. You can now switch back on your services, including Profile Manager.
In Profile Manager you may have to configure Device Management. This creates a correct Code Signng Certicate.
    15. Check the certificate settings in Server App -> Hadware -> Settings-> SSL Certificates.
    16. Check that Apple Push Notifications are set.(you easily check if they are working later)
    17. You may want to re-boot OS Server from the clone now.
    18. After re-boot open Server App and check that your server is running well.
    19. Delete all profiles in System Preferences -> Profiles.
    19. Login to Profile Manager. You should have all users and profiles back. In my experience devices have to be re-enrolled before profiles can be pushed and/or devices be enrolled. You may just as well delete the displayed devices now.
    20. Grab one of your (portable) Macs that you want to enrol and go to (yourhostname)/mydevices and install the server's trust profile. The profile's name  should read "Trust Profile for...) and underneath in green font "Verified".
    21. Re-enrol that device. At this stage keep your finger's crossed and take a deep breath.
    22. If the device has been successfully enrolled you may at last want to test if pushing profiles really works. Login to Profile Manager as admin, select the newly enrolled device. Check that Automatic Push is enabled (-> Profile -> General). Create a harmless management profile such as defining the dock's position on the target machine. (Do not forget to click SAVE at the end - this is easily missed here). If all is well Profile Manager will display an active task (sending) and the dock's position on the target will have changed in a few seconds if you are on a LAN (Note: If sending seems to take forever: check on the server machine and/or on your router that the proper ports are open and that incoming data is not intercepted by Little Snitch or similar software).
Note: if you intend to enrol an Apple iPhone you may first need to install the proper Apple Configuration software.
Now enjoy Profile and Device Manager !
    Regards,
    Twistan

    HI
    1. In Action profiles, logon to system and recheck correcion are available in action definition as well in condition configuration and the schedule condition is also maintained. but the display is not coming(i.e in the worklist this action is not getting displayed).
You can check the schedule condition for the action and match the status values...or try recreating the action with schedule condition again....for customer specific ....copy the standard aciton with ur zname and make a schedule condition and check the same.
2, In suppport team of incident when i give individual processor it throwing a warning that u r not the processor. but when i give org unit it is working perfectly. Could anyone guide on this.
You need to have the empolyee role for BP ..goto BP and got here dropdown for ur bp and choose role Employee and then enter ur userid
also make sure that u have the message processing role
Hope it clarifies ur doubt and resolve ur prob

  • Mobility group only works using management interface?

Hello,  in order to stablish the control traffic between 2 WLC-5508, it's necessary to use the management interface??
It's possible using a dynamic interface o service port ?
I think it only works with management interface,  but I don't understand the meaning of this text in the Configuration Manual:
"Mobility control packets can use any interface address as the source, based on routing table."
    Thank you,

No... mobility communication is done only with the management interface.
    Thanks,
