Adding more hard disk

I am relatively new to Essbase and am maintaining a new Essbase server which has very limited hard disk. If we add additional hard disk, is there a special configuration that I need to do ?

Add the harddisk and work it out for your operating system to recognize it. For Essbase you will need to decide what you want to put on this drive, the large .pag files or smaller .ind files or both. Also from one database or all databases.The settings you will need to set are in the App Manager > Database > Settings > Storage. Important to know is that it will only work when you delete the data and import it again. Further, the online help is there too...yours,TheNerd.

  • In PSE will I use more hard-disk space by using iPhoto plus Organizer for photos?

    I have PSE 10 on my MAC. I normally download my photos onto iPhoto (and a while ago, onto Bridge CS3 which came with an earlier version of PSE) but more recently have become interested in using the PSE Organizer for my photo library.  I have started to transfer/copy the photos from iPhoto but, having read various topics on organizing photos, am a little worried that by having the photos in 2/3 places on the MAC I will use much more hard-disk space.  I know that the original files for iPhoto are in the 'Library' so that I just see thumbnails on iPhoto ( I may be wrong here?), but will the photos I now have on Organizer be working off those same 'Library' originals or am I doubling up on the space required to store these photos?

    For information my iPhoto is v 9.5.1 and would seem not to like .dng files so won't load them (I am using the Adobe RAW to DNG 8.3 Converter at the moment mainly because I would have to upgrade to PSE12 to get the RAW plug-in to process my Lumix G-6 RAW files, which is fairly expensive and, even then, my iPhoto would still be the same version unless I upgraded that as well!).
    I can load the RAW files onto iPhoto but when I then send them to PSE or iPhoto itself for editing they seem to be automatically converted to .jpg and do not have the usual RAW editing selection palette. However, the PSE Organizer seems happy to accept the .dng files (but not the RAW files) and when sent to PSE for editing I do get the RAW type palette, so it looks like storing my .dng files in Organizer is a good idea and, therfore, I might as well store other photos there as well rather than run two different organizers - I will leave the photos in Bridge as they are.
    If you are talking about photos not in iphoto, this is correct. If you use "from iPhoto" you will get automatic duplicates of the originals in a new location. If you export them manually and use from files and folders, yes, the organizer just makes a thumbnail.
    This paragraph made me think!  I'm pretty sure that when I decided to transfer my photos from iPhoto into PSE Organizer I used "from iPhoto" as this seemed the easiest way.  Does this mean that I have duplicated the file size of my iPhoto library and am therefore using much more hard-disc space than if I had used "from files and folders" (getting just thumbnails)? The transfer seems to have pulled in a lot of folders! If this is the case, is there any way to go back and do it again but "from files and folders" next time?! 
    This is all rather complicated it would seem (or I'm making it that way!) and I really appreciate your help.

    Since you have 160 GB listed as backups let's assume these are Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will use up to 80% of the disk space for local snapshots.  This is not an issue.  As you fill your disk it willl remove snapshots to maintain at least 20% free.  If you wish to free this space simply plug in a Time Machine backup disk and run a backup.
    You might also notice that the Storage display in About This Mac will show the backup space as used while a Get Info on the sytem drive will show that space free.  So at this point, if it is Time Machine snapshots that are taking the space, you should see 160 GB more free space from the Get Info query compared to the Storage display.
    Summary: If this space is Time Machine snapshots then don't worry about it.  It will take care of itself.
    I do not recommend leaving Time Machine in the off state.  It is a valuable backup tool that can save your bacon when you accidentally delete or modify a file or if your system crashes.  The snapshots are backups at recent times that you can go back to should you delete or currupt a file, even if you do not have a Time Machine disk plugged in.

  • Can't enter windows 7 after I added 2nd hard disk

    Bought a Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (Lenovo 40Y8725) and a Hitachi 500G hard drive for my T61, the capacity now is increased to 820G. 
    But the problem is I can't boot my laptop!!  Every time I restart my laptop, before I can enter the system(window 7), it shows a blue screen with an error code: "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".
    Several things I tried:
    1, If I take off the bay adapter, everything becomes fine. And after I enter the system, insert the bay adapter, the new 500G hard disk can be recognized normally. (actually, this is what I have to do now if I want to reboot...)
    2, Put the original 320G hard disk to the bay adapter and leave its original position (internal bay) empty, everything is fine
    3, If now put 500G hard disk to the empty position (320G is still in bay adapter), problem again
    So, it seems the adapter bay and both two hard disks should be ok by themselves, and the problem only appears when I plug them together to my laptop. My roommate also bought a bay adapter, and it works totally well on his T400 and windows 7...

    Well, you should never trust a solution from someone who writes Speed Spectrum Clocking when in fact it is Spread Spectrum Clocking.  However, the only reason I mentioned it at all is that you have to choose a setting in order to save the Max Transfer Speed setting.
    They're both Hitachi drives?  (It would seem so if you were able to use the tool on both drives.)
    If you're not using a hard drive caddy on the drive in the Ultrabay, I would place a piece of insulation between the bare drive and the hard drive adapter.  Some people use a sheet of plastic.  I prefer a note card as it provides a cool visual indicator should the drive reach a temperature of 451 F.
    I might have to retire this solution if it doesn't start to produce better results.
    It the insulation suggestion doesn't help, I would post back with the product number of your T61 and any upgrades you have made.

  • DVR with more hard disk space...when?

    Hi all, and Happy New Year.
    Anyone know when a replacement for the 7216 will be out?  All I've heard is "sometime in 2009".  Having a non-upgradeable, non-expandable 160 GB hard drive is a deal killer for me.  It's like Verizon's not really trying.  C'mon, a 1 Terabyte disk can be had for about $100 these days!

    This problem has been with us for years with nothing but rumors rather than answers from Verizon.  If Motorola won't give Verizon a solution, than Verizon needs to get a new equipment supplier (and maybe the threat of talking to another vendor will prod Motorola to act!).  Can you picture Verizon's superior distribution technology coupled with TiVo's superior equipment and Guide - that would be awesome!  Verizon would then be the Number 1 company.  With happy(ier) customers willing to pay for this!  What more could they want?
    Verizon issued a RFP for new equipment last year and you can bet that external drive expansion will be among their requirements.
    Unfortunately, the results of this aren't going to be seen overnight (or even a year).  Companies submit their bids, Verizon picks the winner, more communication follows, and then the company goes to work on the STB/DVR design.  The process can take 12-24 months from design to manufacturing, and more time may be needed before the firmware / software and supporting infrastructure is ready.
    It's not easy to design a stable/reliable, cost-effective HD DVR platform while navigating all the requisite patent and licensing issues.  That's why so few of them exist.

    How many SATA ports are on the G5 Quad motherboard?
    If I need to get a RAID card or similar which ones are recommended?

    There is support for two internal SATA drives. If you only have one now then you can add one more and Apple makes the upgrade process painless.
    If you want to add more drives than that you need to buy a third party bracket and a PCI-Express SATA card.

  • How do I free up more hard disk space?

    I only have 4 gigabytes of free space left and I would like to upgrade to snow leopard. I have leopard now. If I try reinstalling the OS without doing the "erase and install" would that give me more free space? All our music and pictures are on an external hard drive so that is not filling up my drive.

    Not if you do an Archive & Install and select "preserve user preferences and data" when you performed the A&I.
    *A few suggestions to clean up your HD:*
    Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
    An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
    In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
    Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
    Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
    I'm old fashion. I still keep my photos in a photo album. So when people come over my house, they can actually "touch" & "feel" my photos without me running to my computer to "show my photos".
    Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CDs and/or DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
    Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
    Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
    Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
    Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
    Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or a .Mac account to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
    You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days. I store all 5000+ of my music (mp3s) files & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin.
    There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine, Google &/or MacGoogle to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
    If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
    What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
    More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
    Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
    Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
    If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
    Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
    Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
    Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
    You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
    However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

    I have a Quicksilver DP800. Mac OS 10.4.11.
    I just added a 250 GB hard drive but it only shows 128 GB. Will adding an ATA/133 controller help use the entire 250 GB of the hard drive that I just installed?

    Thanks, BDAqua. I purchased the speedtools and I got my 250 GB HD to go to 232 GB. I went this route because I have two firewire cases but they are being used, and a compatible ATA controller is hard to find or too expensive for this machine.

  • Need more Hard Disk space to save more movies

    We currently have DVR model number QIT6416-1 and it only has enough space to save a few moves and shows. What are my options? Can I get another DVR with more HD space? Can I hook up an external hard drive? Connect up to my PC and stream?

    at this time you can only do it this way.
    How can I save shows off my Verizon DVR?
    there is a verizon update that is coming soon - it is update 1.9   when that comes (end of year probably) then you'll be able to use an external HD and esata and can get upto 1 tb expansion.  
    or if that is too long and you can't wait, you can always go buy a TIVO or a MOXI DVR.
    if you get one of those then you return your verizon dvr, and have them send you a cable card.  the cable card is 3.99 a month and it unencrypts all the programs you subscribe to.   and then you use Tivo or MOXI.   both have mammoth hard drives today, and also allow expansion and PC access to the Hard drive content today.  

  • Mac Pro won't boot after adding new hard disk.

    I have 2 SATA back up disks which I want to install in my Mac Pro. But when I install them into my mac and hit the ON button, I hear a "click" and nothing happens. When I remove the hard drives the Mac will boot. I also tried it with only one of the two hard drives but no luck.
    What could this be ?

    There is a lack of just what these are, outside of assuming 3.5" SATA
    Did you erase or format them? what make/model and bought from where?
    Tried booting OS X DVD?
    also, if this is Early 2009 and you are still on 10.5.8, you should strongly consider if you use ANY audio program or deivce, to upgrade to 10.6.5+
    PS: unplug? after shutdown? or in order to shutdown?
    That can add trouble to your boot drive.
    Try safe boot also. And check the directory of all your drives.

  • Getting new hard disks to show up?

    I have installed Solaris 10 to my primary hard disk. The OS is up and running fine as far as I can tell. I have also added two three more hard disks (250GB PATA IDE drives). The BIOS during bootup sees the drives just fine. (Even the Solaris install saw them...). When I'm in the CDE GUI I can't get the OS to see the extra 3 drives.
    I've tried going into the Solaris Management Console 2.1 and then I choose "This Computer" on the "Open Toolbox" dialog. From there I go to the "Storage" --> "Disks" and I get an error message "Attempt to get a list of all Disks failed with unexpected CIM error: CIM_ERR_FAILED"
    Help! Am I just looking in the wrong spot? What do I need to do to get the 3 additional disks to show up? (I'm trying to get them to show up so I can setup a ZFS raid...)

    With all due respect; none of the various *nix are particularly well suited to "point and click" system administration. One of their most redeeming qualitites (to me) is that you learn the innards of the system and moving icons around isn't that ;)
    Now, as for the format command; as root you type in "format" from the command prompt. If you see them with that command you select the disk you want to partition (it will have a number assigned). From there you select part (I think that's it) then you assign the size for each slice of the disk with the exception of slice 2 which is the whole drive from block 0 to block n.
    Once you've laid out the disk with the partitions you want you use the "label" option to write the partition table to the disk.
    If you are going to mount filesystems; you have to use newfs on the partitions you created; then mount them up.
    As I said; not exactly "point and click" system administration.

  • Clicking noise from hard disk

    Hello forum,
    one more hard disk noise problem. My new MPB arrived two days ago and I immediately noticed a clicking noise that is presumably emitted by the hard disk. I've got the basic 250GB model, so it's unrelated to the 500GB noise. The sound occurs quite regularly every 20sec or so, but only when the disk is inactive. The system doesn't freeze. The noise appears regardless whether the disk power saving feature is enabled or not. Here is an amplified version of the sound without the normal background noise (fan, hard disk):

    I've learned that clicking noises are a certain sign of hard disk failure. So should I return it immediately and ask for a replacement?

    I can hear only the second click, too. Only if I mute the background noise and amplify my recording, I hear the first one. Could you perhaps take a record of the sound that your MBP makes so that we can compare the sounds?
    Haven't noticed any other problems with the drive, though. Is yours a Fujitsu? Mine is, and according to their web site, "if the drive is idle it will automatically move the heads periodically to prevent lubricant migration." I'm wondering if that's what the noise is.
    Interesting. Mine is a Fujitsu, too, and perhaps the two noises come from the disk head starting and parking.
    Actually, it sounds a lot like the 500GB noise, except without the beep. I've seen very few, if any, issues with the 250GB drive, but I'm holding out hope that a fix may come along at some point.
    I agree. Currently the sound doesn't seem to be harmful, but one never knows.

  • The dreaded 3F0, "hard disk not exist" problem

    Okay, I have a degree in EE with a minor in comp sci.  I understand how bios' work, etc.  This is why the "answers" HP "tech support" gave me make absolutely no sense.   Could someone please shed some light on this bizarre problem?   I am trying to install a BRAND NEW, WORKING hard drive in a DV7-6163 and the laptop refuses to recognize the existence of the SATA drive.   I have tried this drive in another laptop and IT WORKS,  I have tried other working hard drives in this machine and they DO NOT work.   I have checked to make sure the SATA cable was good....yes!    I went as far as to switch the connector from the DVD drive to the SATA port that was meant for the hard drive.   Guess what,  IT WORKS and the laptop thinks there is a hard drive installed (it even runs the hd diag.. no more "hard disk not exist" error!!)  SO I now know that that actual hardware port is able to communicate with a SATA device.  HP has been LESS THAN HELPFUL as they insist it must be a bad drive or bad main board (even after I explained my various tests demonstrate that it cannot be (why does the port that refuses to recognize the hard drive talk fine to the DVD drive??).   So the only thing left is either a corrupted bios, or a major firmware issue with the code.    Could someone please point me in the right direction?   This was a very expensive laptop and I am ready to throw it through a window!!

    Could you provide a link to the UEFI diagnostics utility?  I tried to google it, but there are so many hits, it makes it confusing to know which one!    Are you saying that the UEFI diag dos utility can bypass the bios functions?  HP blatently LIES about the ability to access the advanced bios settings!   How do I know?  I have the Insyde H20 EzH20 tool.   For some reason i cannot get it to work with my dv7 bios (it is RSA signed), but it works fine on my DV6 bios and allows you to access a plethora of advanced settings!   Namely the SATA mode which I sorely need access to.     How HP justifies not allowing a customer access to settings on property we own is beyond me.   Of course the impetus must be they want to be able to charge us to change a simple setting.    I will NEVER buy HP again!  Twenty years ago they were a respectable brand.   Today, they are all about squeezing every drop of blood from the customer!

  • Trying to install OS X 10.3 on a new hard disk.

    I inserted a new hard drive into my iMac, as I knew that I needed more hard disk space for Panther then the 6 GB that I had with 9.2.2 (not for the install, which only requires 2 GB, but for general use).
    I zeroed it and formatted it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but when I continued with installation it said, "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume." when I tried to select a volume for installation.
    Although I don't want to install until I have checked the firmware is updated (using the old hard drive and OS 9.2.2), I obviously don't want these problems when I try to install in a month or so.
    Hard disk is Maxtor 6E040L0, 38.3 GB.
    I have looked at Solution: mac os x cannot start up from this volume (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2265801&#2265801), but the info says that the drive does have Applepartitionscheme. I will try it with the opposing scheme, if possible, but I assume that won't work.

    To install Panther, you need the retail install version CDs (black with silver X). I suspect you are trying to use a model specific version or upgrade version (gray), that won't work.
    When you formatted the new drive, did you check to install the OS 9 drivers? The drivers need to be installed if you want to be able to boot OS 9.x. If you just want to be able to run in classic mode, the drivers are not necessary.
    If OS X has never been installed on your Mac, you need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates

  • Recurring Hard Disk Error - New Hard Disk

    I've been in contact with HP about a recurring problem with my Pavillion g6 - it periodically has blue screen errors and then won't turn on, displaying a "hard disk error". It then refuses to boot up for anywhere between a few minutes to a few days. I sent it in for a repair, it came back with a new display bezel (???). More hard disk errors. I called in and they shipped out a new hard drive for me.
    Today I installed the new hard drive. When I tried to boot it up for the first time, I was greeted with yet another hard disk error. I ran a test, it claimed that the hard disk was fine (it used to say that before sometimes too, which is probably why they didn't replace it initially). Powered down, and turned it on again - it started up fine.
    Now it is working, but I don't feel any better about it since it had that initial error. Is it normal for a new hard disk to fail right after being hooked up? It was obviously installed fine, as I am typing this post on a fully functioning laptop now. I am tired of living out of a portable drive (it is a lot like living out of a suitcase), so I would appreciate some assurance that the laptop isn't just going to crash again, but it seems to me that the new hard disk isn't going to be my solution.
    I have an extended warranty - but I don't have the luxury of time when it comes to mailing it in, as I am a full-time student and use online courseware every day.

    It is obviously not normal to get an error on a new hard drive. Equally obviously, it is not the drive itself. I wish I could calm your fears but I suspect you have some sort of an intermittent connectivity problem with the SATA port on the motherboard. All you can do is keep using it and see if the problem comes back. I might go in and triple check all the screws and connections, but that is just OCD, really.
