Address Book: how to review duplicate before merging

If I remember correctly Address Book used to have the facility to review duplicated information before doing something with it. In Apple's infinite wisdom they seem to have removed this feature and now expect us to trust Address Book to merge duplicated info.
Is there any way around this? Is there any 3rd party software that will do a better job?

This one, run in Script Editor, will list in the results pane any duplicates it finds based on name. You can uncomment the delete part, but I prefer to just use it for finding them. It has been posted before, and some people have found it doesn't work for them, others have found it helps. What I do is run it from time to time, review the duplicates it finds - typically two eg John Smiths who are actually two separate contacts - and fix any that need fixing, and then let Address Book look for dups and see if I can work out why it still finds the odd one.

Label Printing Using Address Book - How can I Print multiple labels of the same name?

I used to be able to print multiple copies of the same picture on one page using iphoto. There was a customise button when you went through to print and it was there somewhere. I can't see it anymore - maybe since an upgrade.
It's gone. But as a work-around, duplicate your photo (⌘D) to create as many versions as you want copies and select all at once. Then use the "Custom" print layout and set the photo size you want.
After printing, trash the added versions.

OK, time to move over to the Aperture Discussions Group.
    It's at this link - https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/aperture
This group you are in now is for Lion discussions, and over in the Aperture group, you'll meet skilled people who will help.  Especially if you state your questions clearly and provide sufficient context such that the reader can figure out what is needed.
Make sure you spend some time reading the Aperture User Guide before asking really basic questions, and search the PDF version using Preview.
Also search that group for your question, it may well have been asked and answered

  • When printing a list in Address Book, how can I select more than the default Attributes and keep them selected when I print again? I want to print ALL information for contacts so I have email address, notes, phone, company, title, etc all on one page.

When printing a list in Address Book, how can I select more than the default Attributes and keep them selected when I print again? I want to print ALL information for contacts so I have email address, notes, phone, company, title, etc all on one page. I don't want to have to check off an additional 5 or 6 attributes each time I print out contact information. Is there a way to change the default setting for printing lists, so it is not just "phone," "photo," and "job title?"

I have a user who wants to do this same thing. I did not find any way either to default the attributes to anything other than what you see the first time. Seems like such a trivial thing, hard to believe they do not allow it. I did find a program for this called iDress but I can't seem to download it from any links on the Internet. Not sure if it is free or not, but it was recommended by a link on the Mac support site.

In Address Book, how do I move all cards from my 'last import' smart group into a new group that I will create? So far I am not being allowed to Edit Smart Group!

You’re going to have a very big problem and very soon. These missing pics are the beginning of trouble.
the total size of all my folders on my 60gb internal drive is 46.5 gb, yet only 1.9 gb is available,
OS X needs about 10 gigs of free space on the hard drive for normal OS operations such as virtual memory and temporary files. Without this space the machine slows down as the OS hunts for free space, files become fragmented and applications begin to crash. The risk of data corruption increases exponentially.
You must, as a matter of urgency, make space on the drive. I cannot stress this enough.
You may be able to recover the pics from your camera card using an app such as MediaRecover

  • In Address Book, how can i modify several contacts (several cards) at the s

    Hello,
In Address Book, how can i modify several contacts (several cards) at the same time ?
for exemple : I have 100 contact which live in Paris, I select all of them together, but when I put "Paris" in the field "city", it puts "Paris" only in the fisrt contact !
how to edit several contact at a time ?
And I would like to put some kind of "tags", or words, in "remark", also by selecting several contact and edit them together...
    Thanks by advance !
    Alexandre.

Welcome to the discussions, Alexandre1975 et bonjour.
Just using Address Book this can't be done, but if you are prepared to try a little Applescript it is easy. This script will set the city for example - but only if there is already an address.

  • My contacts have been transferred from my iPhone5 to iPhone6 . I now need to back them up in a new PC in a separate address book How can I do it without adding all contacts from Outlook when I synch  from iTunes ?

My contacts have been transferred from my iPhone5 to iPhone6 . I now need to back them up in a new PC in a separate address book How can I do it without adding all contacts from Outlook when I synch  back from iTunes ?

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

  • Mail Merge download has lost collected address book how do I recover it?

I needed to be able to do large mail merge for e-mails. Found Mail Merge add on and downloaded it. When I restarted Thunderbird, my collected e-mails address book had gone. Only personal address book visible with only 2 addresses in it. Urgently need to recover address book asap. Removing Mail Merge add on has not fixed the problem. What can I do to recover address book?

    I did.
They helped me stop Plaxo syncing and solved their problem, but mac address book is toast and they
don;t know how to fix it.
    They said call apple.
Address book won't open at all now.

  • I have over 16.000 duplicated addresses in my address book how do I get rid of them?

    Mac osx 10.9.5.... 2.4GHz core duo..  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
I have over 16.000 cards in my address book.... due to duplicates I should have less then 1000?  how do I fix this?

Under Card in the Menu bar, select Look for Duplicates. After it finds the dupes it will ask if you want to merge I suggest you select this option.

  • Address Book creates 12,000 duplicate contacts!

    I'm running mail on 10.4.9 on a G4 iBook.
Address book spontaneously duplicates all of my contacts. 30 minutes after restoring my 683 contacts from a backup, the iBook grinds to a halt and then I note that I have in excess of 12,400 contacts! It's worth noting that the database runs perfectly on my 24" iMac.
I've switched off syncing with dotmac and yet it still does this.
    Any ideas?
    J

If you are going to reactivate synchronization, then do this first:
    • launch iSync
    • open the Preferences… dialog
    • press the Reset Sync History… button
This will leave your sync clients registered and your data intact, but remove any indication that you have ever synchronized before, clearing the truth database and triggering an initial slow synchronization once you re-enable to process and initiate your next event.

  • Address Book changing fields on duplicate contacts ?

My Address Book is duplicating contacts, BUT mixing the fields.
    Original contac: last-name = "Rosales A", first-name = "Eduardo". No middle-name used.
    I get a second contact with: last-name = "A", first-name = "Eduardo". No middle-name apears.
    Then yet another with: last-name = "A", middle-name = "Eduardo" and first-name = "Rosales".
Forget about physical addresses that will by magic put a "country" when there was none defined.
Forget also that it (Address Book) is adding pictures to contacts, I don't want to, some correct (when asked to some friends) but some incorrect (a friends photo on a Company contact with no relation).
I'm aware of using iCloud and "on My Mac", will duplicate info, this is already taken care of.
It all started when I was using and syncing ONE MacBook and ONE iPhone. By magic, I did not change anything.
Now I'm using iCloud, Lion on the MacBook, iOS 5.0 on the iPhone-4 and the iPad-2.
Now, if I delete one instance of a contact, say on the iPhone, it will disapeare on the MacBook.
BUT tomorrow, during a "sync over the air", again the "A" last-name will show up.
    Best regards,
    Eduardo Rosales.

  • In Address Book, how do you create a new group under "On my Mac", not under "iCloud"?

In Address Book there are groups under "On my Mac" and groups under "iCloud".  When I do File -> "Create new group", the new group always goes under "iCloud".  How can I make a new group to go under "On my Mac".  I also tried dragging the new group from the iCloud area to the "On my Mac" area, but that doesn't do it.  Address Book is version 6.1.3.  Thanks for your help.

Maybe look in the Preferences > Accounts & disable the iCloud account? That should force it to create a local group then re-enable the iCloud account. I would use the 'File > Export… Addressbook archive' to make a backup before you begin, but it should be fine.
I'm not sure 10.6.8 supported iCloud natively, so perhaps that is why it is being wierd?

  • Address Book: How do you select, copy and paste info to an email?

I look up a contact in my Mac Address Book and want to cut and paste email/address and phone into an email I am writing in another application - in this case using AOL online.
It seems that you cannot select and paste the information or selected parts of it from the Address Book to the email using the usual key commands to select/copy/paste text?
It is as if you are trying to copy from a photo... am I the only one to find this a completely mindless limitation of the Address Book?
Or is there something obvious I am missing?
    thanks in advance
    MS

This is insane!  I switched to Mac a few years ago (still use XP/Win7/Linux at work) and generally like it. However, I keep running into these idiotic and arbitratry limitations!  I want to create a bunch of address cards for people I work with.  Everthing is the same except phone extension, name, and email.  There's no way to copy/duplicate contacts in Mac Address Book or on my iPhone.  And, like many similar issues, if I dare to ask about it at an "Expert Bar", I'll first get a look of confusion and when I finally get the person to understand, I'll just get the useless response of "that's how it works".   No ideas for work-arounds. No reporting to Apple development. Just the attitude of "why would anyone want to do anything it doesn't already do?"
It's great having all the Apple stores around here and being able to ask (simple) questions, but they're really not able to deal with much more than older folks who just bought a Mac and don't know how to use a computer at all. If you've been using dozens of computers and operating systems for 20+ years, they don't want to talk to you.

  • Whenup graded I lost my address book how do I find it?

I have upgraded to Snow Leopard and in doing so I lost my address book names. Help

    OUCH !
Can you identify how you upgraded - for example did you erase your drive during the install?
Did you create any kind of a backup before doing the upgrade (Always recommended)?
Did you have Time Machine running on the old OS prior to the upgrade?
Did you at any time (or has someone else) sync'd your contacts with a Google account?
The following may or may not help:
