Adobe Reader XI not displaying PDF in IE11

Hello, I'm sure there's a small detail/option I'm missing. I have PDFs that I need displayed within IE11 and the browser displays an x where the file should be. I've verified the Internet options under Preferences are correct in Reader.
I've reset the browser, ensured the Adobe PDF add-on is enabled, and completely reinstalled Adobe Reader XI (along with removing folders/reg keys).
None of these have brought about success in displaying the PDF.
Does anyone have any workarounds or something I should check/enable?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Ja

Yes: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2716529
The "Fix it" however only works for Windows 8 and IE10.  If you don't want to make the registry change manually, download, unzip, then run the registry script from https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/8381e091-a712-4864-854c-3d11afd3a405

Receiving error message using current Maverick version: "Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).".  Is fix the same as on previous OS versions?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Adobe Reader will not open PDF in browser simple answer.

I just had this problem and was able to work through it with the help of tech support from TD Ameritrade.  The fix is simple so read on.  After uninstalling and reinstalling all things adobe and trying other recommendations on these forums I was stumped.  I called my broker tech section since I couldn't open their reports and we identified what my specific problem was.  For me, and I imagine some of you this will help and prevent a lot of wasted time.
Nothing was wrong with my Adobe Reader.  My problem was that I have a 64 bit operating system and both of my default browsers were 64 bit browsers.  I did not know my internet explorer default browser was the 64 bit one until the technician that assisted me informed me that a recent windows update made all 64 bit systems default to 64 bit internet explorer browsers.  You cannot change that default by choosing between 64 bit and 32 bit, because you can only choose internet explorer.  That explains why my attempts to open with a 32 bit browsers always failed.  I also tried with Firefox thinking it was 32 bit and it failed as well.  The technician informed me Firefox is a 64 bit browser and then it made sense.  I guess the recent Adobe reader update caused a change that no longer allowed my 64 bit system and 64 bit browser to open PDF's through the browser. The technician who assisted me has a 64 bit system and only uses 64 bit browsers and can still open PDF's through those browsers.  That confused us for a while until we realized he had his Adobe updater turned off and therefore had not been exposed yet to the update that originated my problems.
****ANSWER FOR MY PROBLEM*******The quick answer is use Google Chrome or some other 32 bit browser.  If you set a 32 bit browser as your default, the PDF's will open.  You cannot set Internet Explorer 32 bit browser as your default if you have a 64 bit system and also have 64 bit Internet Explorer.  The windows update prevents you from doing it.  At least that is my understanding.
The bottom line is I have the newest Adobe Reader on a 64 bit system and can open any web PDF with Google Chrome set as my default browser, because it is a 32 bit browser.  The new Adobe Reader will not open PDF's with a 64 bit browser in Vista.  A 64 bit system is fine as long as you use the 32 bit browser to open your PDF's in Vista.  I hope this helps some avoid some headaches.  I wish it had been posted when my problem first arose.
I think you can use a 64 bit browser in Windows 9 or later, but for Vista the above applies.

Yes I can create a short cut to internet exp. 32 bit on my desktop and I can even be using Internet expl. 32 bit, but when I try to open a PDF with adobe reader it won't work with internet exp. as my default browser b/c windows will always choose Internet exp. 64 bit which isn't supported yet by adobe reader.  With google chrome as my default browser windows can't choose an unsupported 64 bit browser in its place b/c google chrome doesn't have a 64 bit version.
My post was for those people who may not have realized yet that windows would not ever choose Internet expl. 32 bit over Internet expl. 64 bit if both exist on their system.  For them it is easiest to just choose a default browser that only has a 32 bit version.
If I understood your reply correctly, you were telling me how to create a shortcut to Internet exp. 32 bit on my desk top.  However, having that shortcut on my desk top and opening my browser through it will not prevent the problem of windows choosing my Internet exp. 64 bit browser for pdf's I try to open from the web.  Thank you for your response, but I think the problem that I have tried to explain does exist for many users and can only be fixed by using a 32 bit browser that is not Internet explorer as your default browser.  At some point if windows fixes the update that always chooses Internet expl. 64 bit over Internet expl. 32 bit, then this will all be irrelevant.
    Thanks

Make sure you have the latest Adobe Reader installed for your OS.

Did you try using Preview. If you control click on the PDF on your desktop you can use the "open with" option.

  • Adobe Reader Will Not Display Large PDFs

When using the Adobe Reader app on PlayBook it will not display some PDFs. It seems that it will not display PDFs that are too large.
Some files that might be too large do not display while smaller files do display in the app. The too large range could be in the 12 MB region where the good range could be 6 MB or less.
I tried to submit feedback to BlackBerry on this issue but it returned my email saying it could not process my request. I am hoping that they read it here.
Here is a link to a page with both readable and unreadable files:
    http://www.bossus.com/backstage/product_manuals/?group=2
A readable PDF is the owner's manual for the RV-3. A unreadable PDF is the owner's manual for the RC-3.

That looks like a perfectly good PDF, but since it's trying to open in Microsoft Word, that means your file association for .pdf files is incorrect.  You should change it to point to Adobe Reader instead of Word.

  • Adobe Reader won't display PDF in IE Browser Window

I am using Adobe Reader XI and Internet Explorer v. 11.0.9600.17280.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Adobe.  I've also checked IE Add-Ins and all Adobe Reader Add-Ins are enabled.
However, you're poorly written software STILL WILL NOT display PDFs in browser any more.
I need help, but since you're software is so horrible, you do not offer typical technical support.
    PLEASE HELP!

My company is having the same problem and I was hoping for some kind of final explanation.
The fix of resetting the Internet Explorer settings works for a time, then it later it has the problem again.  Our company has a reporting site which needs the documents to open in the browser to allow for drill down(generating another report based on a link in the document), so the reports have to be in the browser not a separate Adobe Reader Window.  We have tried other fixes on the Web like the TabProcGrowth=1, but still the problem happens later.
Our users are tired of resetting their Internet Explorer settings every week or more.  As this has worked in all previous versions, I would agree the issue probably lies in Internet Explorer or at least partly in Internet Explorer, but we need some way to keep the files opening in the browser rather than a separate Reader window.  Any additional thoughts or fixes by anyone would be greatly appreciated.

  • Adobe Reader will not open PDFs

Adobe Reader will not open any PDFs. It will not open any new PDFs, downloaded from online, or old ones that have already downloaded and saved to a file. I have tried to repair Adobe Reader XI and reinstalled the most updated version. When I attempt to open a PDF, it tries to open it in Micrsoft Word, promting a file converstion (that fails).
What I get when I attempt to open or convert pdf to word.

Go to: C/Program Files/Adobe/Reader 11.0/Reader  (Program Files (x86) if your Windows is 64 bit)
Double click the eula.exe file and accept the license agreement.
Reader will then be able to open.

  • Adobe Reader X - Disable "Display PDF in Browser" via Registry

I'm trying to configure my organization's Windows workstations so that web-based PDF files open in Adobe Reader rather than in internet browsers. I have been able to configure Adobe Reader 9 installations to open web-based PDF files in Reader rather than internet browsers by using the following registry setting:
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals
    Value name
    bBrowserIntegration
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
My problem lies with Adobe Reader X: I used the following settings in attempting to prevent Adobe Reader X installations from opening web-based PDFs in internet browsers:
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Originals
    Value name
    bBrowserIntegration
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Originals
    Value name
    bAllowByteRangeRequests
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\AVGeneral
    Value name
    bBrowserDisplayInReadMode
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
I've only had partial success, though. Internet Explorer respects the registry settings and opens web-based PDFs in Reader X. Firefox 14.0.1, though, ignores the registry settings and opens web-based PDFs in Firefox.
Is there a different registry setting I should be using so that Firefox sees "Display PDF in Browser" unchecked and allows web-based PDFs to be opened in Reader X? Is there another method I should be following for deploying this setting to Adobe Reader X clients?

    Hi,
We'll, you've educated yourself well. Unfortunately, Acrobat products can't control what browsers do so uniform behavior is not possible.  The setting is Adobe's best attempt and forcing some consistency.
The ReadMode setting only controls what happens in the UI after the PDF is open.

while all of them can be displayed in the OpenGL mode.
    $asy -V file.asy

  • Urgent: Adobe Reader does not attach pdf-files to standard e-mail software any more!

    Hello,
    Situation:
    Windows XP Pro; SP3
    Office 97
    Thunderbird
    Adobe Acrobat Reader
When I want to attach a pdf-file directly from Adobe Reader to a new Thunderbird e-mail it starts ALL OF A SUDDEN the setup-assistant for Microsoft Exchange / Outlook! Why? I have no clue (:
It worked fine until 3 days ago.
Thunderbird is the standard e-mail software and it works for example fine if I click on an address in the internet. Thunderbird opens a new mail.
I tried to uninstall Adobe Reader and installed it again (restart computer / ccleaner) but this failure still occurs!
Does anybody know what to do please? It is really urgent because I need that function all the time... (:
By the way: I do not work with Outlook; it is not configured.
    Thank you very much!

    > ALL OF A SUDDEN...
What happened between when it worked correctly 3 days ago, and the time it stopped working as expected?
Check Control Panel | Internet Options | tab Programs; to what is the E-mail option set?
If it is already correctly showing Thunderbird, then try a System Restore to a date when it still worked correctly.

  • Adobe Reader is not opening pdf files - there is no Accept button on License Agreement

Please help. I am unable to open any pdf files with Adobe Reader 9.4.0. I get taken to an  Adobe Reader License Agreement page that says "Press the Accept button to Agree to the License Agreement and Continue." However, there is no accept button to press! Every timne I try to open a pdf file, I get taken back to the same Adobe Reader License Agreement page, with no Accept button. How do I get out of this dead-end loop? I have followed Adobe's tips on how to "Change" the file through the Control Panel in order to correct the problem, but I still end up in the same dead-end loop. What's the solution?

You can open Reader, click on right arrow key on your keyboard (it will change focus from Decline to Accept) and hit Enter....

  • Adobe Reader will not open .pdf file.

I have Adobe Reader Acrobat 8 Professional.
I am attempting to open a .pdf file - it opens, but then gives me an error message and closes Adobe.
Error Code 148:3  You cannot use this product at this time.  You must repair the probgram by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product.
I've done this, but receive the same error message.  Any ideas what's going on?

Try using the Acrobat/Reader Cleaner Tool to remove the old version of Adobe Reader 8:  http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then update your version of Adobe Reader:  http://get.adobe.com/reader/
By the way if you have both installed remove Reader and run the repair of Acrobat.

    Hi Sriniwas,
Try checking your Credentials for ADS. Seems that either your credential file is invalid or not installed properly.
Refer to the following guide for configuring the ADS.

  • Adobe Reader plugin forbids displaying PDFs from outside domains

One part of web application is local digital signing  using activex component. But I want to display a PDF that gets signed  beforehand and after. Since documents can be quite large I would'n  really want uploading them and then again downloading for displaying.
Therefore I wanted to embed a PDF using local path (eg. file:///) but Adobe throws "Access denied" error. I tried lowering Reader's security settings to minimum but it didn't help.
Is there any way to embed a PDF with source ouside of the web application domain?

Solved it. Problem seemed to have been a crashed Acrobat process. Just kill all Acrobat tasks in the task manager, reload the link in the browser and the Save button now works.
