Advice about using the laptop with closed lid while connected to external display

Hello all HP forum members!
I have an ENVY 17 with Win8.1 64bit, a great laptop, but I need an advice about using it while connected via HDMI cable to an external display (TV).
When I play heavy 3D games, the computer produces more heat than usual (of course this is normal), but doing so with closed lid, could this harm the  display in some way, as a result of the heat?
Thanks!

Hi @VVel ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 17 Notebook and issue with keeping the Notebook on while closing the lid. Here is a document on changing the Power option.
Control Panel - Power Options - upper left - Choose what closing the lid does.
Change Plan Settings and also check Advanced Settings. Make sure you do this for both battery and power.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

  • Mid 2010 15" MBP becomes unresponsive with black screen while plugged into external display?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro, which is 15" and has the 2.66GHZ i7 processor configuration.
Had it for almost a year: No problems
Until about a month ago, laptop began becoming slow to boot, crashing. checked the harddisks, were corrupted and it needed a complete re-install of Snow Leopard. Did this and it seems to be ok ALTHOUGH:
I recently purchased a TEAC LCD TV which i have been using as an external display for my macbook, but have found that while the LCD TV is plugged in and i am using a dual-screen setup my computer and BOTH displays will quite often go black, and macbook will become completely unresponive
This sometimes happens apparantly randomly, but mostly happens when i have been using the external display for a while (30mins+) and use the "Display all Windows" feature of OSX.
I am connecting the macbook to the LCD TV with an Apple Mini-DisplayPort to DVD-D adaptor, which is then plugged into a DVD-D to HDMI adaptor
(As TV has no DVD-D input and i didnt (at the time) want to spend $50 on a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor) Could this multiple line of adaptors be causing a problem? surely it wouldnt cause the macbook to die...
Can anybody help me? i have looked all over the internet for anyone with a similar problem with no avail.

UPDATE: This has happened to my macbook again while not plugged into my external monitor and with nothing else plugged in to it expect a USB mouse.
Here is a status report from when i rebooted about 15 minutes ago (Plugged into TEAC LDC, went to 'show all windows' crashhhh..) dont know if there are any clues in here:

  • Why do I get error "The LDAP server is unavailable" while connecting to external domain via sync connection in SharePoint UPSA ?

    Hello,
I am trying to connect to external domain via UPS Account having "Replicate Directory changes" permission on external domain while creating sync connection in UPSA.
I have checked below URLS :
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/1912bf88-8fec-4b5d-9d1e-a42db8318e33/ldap-server-is-unavailable-sharepoint-2010-user-synchronization?forum=sharepointadminprevious

And looks like its network connectivity issue - and hence I have verified that port 389 is open by infra team.
Note : I am able to connect to local AD , does it make sense that port is not open for external domain ?
Can anyone please let me know what can be the issue ?
Your help will be highly appreciated as I am struggling to fix this issue since  quite long time but no luck yet.
    Thank you in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Dipti Chhatrapati

    Hi Dipti,
If you have Two-Way trust relationship then not sure if you have tried below:
Create a folder on the SharePoint server
Go to Folder properties - Security tab
Try adding user of the external domain on the folder
Please let us know if you are able to add the user or not. If you are able to add then it means that the connection and trust is proper and you should be able to create sync connection in UPA without any issues or else there is some issue with the connectivity
or the trust which is configured.
Please also make sure that you have given permissions to sync account as per below TechNet:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh296982(v=office.15).aspx
Replicate Directory changes permissions are also required on cn=configuration container, below are the steps:
Grant Replicate Directory Changes permission on the cn=configuration container
Use this procedure to grant Replicate Directory Changes permission on the cn=configuration container to an account.
To grant Replicate Directory Changes permission on the cn=configuration container
On the domain controller, click Start, click Run, type adsiedit.msc, and then click OK.
If the Configuration node is not already present, do the following:
In the navigation pane, click ADSI Edit.
On the Action menu, click Connect to.
In the Connection Point area of the Connection Settings dialog box, click Select
a well know Naming Context, select Configuration from the drop-down list, and then click OK.
Expand the Configuration node, right-click the CN=Configuration... node, and then click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Security tab.
In the Group or user names section, click Add.
Type the name of the synchronization account, and then click OK.
In the Group or user names section, select the synchronization account.
In the Permissions section, select the Allow check box next to the Replicating
Directory Changes (Replicate Directory Changes on Windows Server 2003) permission, and then click OK.

  • Computer freezes in lid-closed mode when connected to external display

I have a Sylvania SC190 CRT display connected to my Powerbook via a VGA to DVI adapter. Every time I put the computer in lid-closed mode and try to run it off of just the SC190, after a few minutes it freezes up and I have to hard restart it(hold power button down).
Now, a few days ago, my powerbook stopped recognizing the display as an SC190, and just recognized it as a VGA Display. Don't know if this is relevant, as I have never used lid-closed mode before.
Does anyone know what the problem is, and/or what I can do about it?
    Thank you.
    PowerBook 15" G4 1.67 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   512MB, 80GB, SD-DL

I have the exact same problem.
    Here's my story:
To give you some backgroud, my setup involves having the macbook on a mstand hooked up to an external monitor. I run a usb hub from my macbook, this is where my mouse transceiver is plugged in. I use am Apple wireless bluetooth keyboard (latest slim model)
I recently purchased the 13.3' inch 2.26 MBP as I gave my older 2.0 uMB to a family member. The computer is in the stock configuration with no hardware upgrades.
I have noticed weird behaviour when waking the computer from sleep when the lid is closed. When i wake the computer up (by tuning on bt keyboard), the keyboard light blinks like there is not bt connection and the computer will wake in an inactive state. The led light will be on, but when i flip the screen up....nothing. Screen is dark, keyboard pressing does not illicit any responses. I have to do a hard reboot by holding down the power button to restart the computer. Unfortunately any previous data or work is lost.
I work in IT so I completed troubleshooting and also things outlined on forums in google. Reset PRAM, reset SMC and also reinstalled OSX. Still I get the same result. Fearing I purchased a defective unit, I called Apple and they told me i could exchange the computer so I dropped by the apple store and exchanged it quite easily.
I've spent hours restoring from time machine and I am experiencing the same issue on my new laptop. I'm now assuming its not hardware but more firmware related as I had to do a bluetooth firmaware upgrade when I bought the computer when I checked for software updates.
Is anyone else having any wake issues with their new MBPs? And what should I do next? Should I exchange for a 3rd unit? Thanks for you help everyone.

  • Can the MacBook safely be used with closed lid ?

I'm wondering if the MacBook and MacBook Pro can be used safely with closed lid when connected to an external display. I know in the past there was an heat issue.
    Many thanks
    Frank

It says you can, right in the manual:
Using Your MacBook with the Display Closed
You can use your MacBook with the display closed if the computer is connected to an
    external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
Important: To use your MacBook with the display closed, the MacBook must be
plugged into a functioning power outlet.
To operate your computer with an external monitor attached and the display closed:
1 Connect a USB keyboard and mouse to your MacBook.
2 Connect the power adapter to the MacBook and a power outlet. Check that the power
    adapter light is on.
3 Close the MacBook display to put the computer to sleep.
4 Follow the steps in the previous section to connect your MacBook to an external
    display.
5 Wait a few seconds and then press any key on the external keyboard to wake the
    MacBook.

  • Tecra A9 - external Monitor shows stripes when using the Laptop pluged.

    Hello
I've heard about at least 3 Tecras A9 witch produces stripes on the external Monitor only when the Laptop is pluged. When using the Laptop with the battery, the Monitor works just fine. they tried to divide the cables of the Monitor and the power supply as far as possible, but still the same problem. When using the Laptop with a non-toshiba-AC Adaptor, the external Monitor is working fine.

    Hello
In my opinion you should visit nearest authorized Toshiba service provider. They can connect your Tecra to external monitors and test it. If the result is the same I am pretty sure you will get AC adapter replacement for free.
Do not wait and discuss for days here. Contact them and I hope they will help you.

  • How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

  • A warning about using a tv with the mini

My father is trying to use his new Mac Mini with his TV, using the video adaptor to plug into the s-video on his TV. Two problems cropped up; he wanted to learn to use a computer so I bought him Linda.com "intro to the Macintosh" DVD's. He couldn't get a video image with the lesson, though he could hear the audio. I called Linda.com and they said the resolution had to be 1024 (not the resolution that was coming out of the Mini). I had my Dad change the resolution, and he lost the signal from the computer (the video slipped out of sync) and got diagonal lines across his TV. Nothing we could do would bring back the signal so he took it to Fry's today. They traced the problem to the Mini resetting itself to 50 hz rather than 60 (Pal vs. NTSC?) upon the resolution being changed.
They got it set back and advise he not change the resolution. So, be warned, if you use the Mini with a TV, be careful about the above situation. I think Apple should warn new buyers, like my Dad who want their TV to be used for the computer, since Apple is advertising the Mini as something you can plug into a TV.
Also, if you, like my Dad, want to get the biggest text you can on the screen, don't change the resolution to the lowest, simply go to system preferences and go to Universal Access and scale up the text to what ever size you need, so much better. Thank you OSX and Tiger.
    Good luck,
    Lory
I hope this solves some similar problems I've seen here.

Just to correct a few misconceptions.
    1. Regular analogue TVs don't have a fixed horizontal "resolution" - they have a fixed number of lines per field and a fixed number of fields per second. Interlacing is used to combine two fields into a single frame. Analogue TV is not based around pixels or samples - so the horizontal resolution is not fixed. However there is a typical maximum resolution that can be carried - and these days broadcast TV is produced using digital standards based around the analogue standards - and this factors this in.
    2. Not all of the total number of lines in an analogue TV system contain video information (some lines are used for synchronising information - and there needs to be time to allow the electron beam to return from the bottom to the top of the screen) To add to this there is an additional issue in that not all of the total number of lines containing video are typically displayed on a regular TV due
    3. There are two dominant analogue TV line and field standards.
    * 625 lines at 50 fields per second. This is used in Europe, Australasia, parts of South America, and large sections of the Middle East, Asia and the Far East. Both PAL and SECAM colour systems are used - in varying flavours.
The 625/50 system contains 576 active lines of picture information, so is also often described as 576/50.
If you consider 4:3 (i.e. regular shaped screens) then the square-pixel resolution that fits this is 768x576 - and square pixels are what computers usually like to deal with.
In broadcast terms - both 4:3 and 16:9 image are based around a 702x576 non-square pixel resolution contained within a 720x576 digital structure. (720x576 is slightly wider than 4:3 or 16:9)
    * 525 lines at 60 fields per second. This is used in North America, Japan, Korea, parts of South America etc. It is widely used with NTSC colour systems - though Brazil uses a variant of PAL.
The 525/60 system these days uses 480 lines of resolution (originally it used a few more - around 483) - so it is often described as 480/60.
In square pixel terms a 480 line 4:3 image is 640x480 resolution (our old favourite!)
In broadcast terms the 4:3 and 16:9 images are sampled within a non-square pixel 720x480 structure. I'm not clear whether the 4:3/16:9 is now based on a 480 or 483 or 486 line image - so not clear as to the exact frame that equates to the analogue 4:3 or 16:9 image.
Sure TV Output hardware itself may scale a Mac or PC video output to 720x480 or 720x576 for output purposes - as these resolutions are typically what consumer electronics kit runs at. However to state that a TV itself runs at a fixed horizontal resolution isn't accurate - if the TV is analogue it just has a limit to its horizontal resolution - not a fixed value.

Edge has very clear restrictions, one being that you must have 6 months of clean payment history which you don't. Either wait until April 14, or good luck at Sprint.
I am unsure how it can be determined the payment mix up was the fault of CS, but regardless, the mix up was done. There can be any number of reasons why a payment could be missed without any fault on your part, however you are still the responsible party for the account and must live with the repercussions.

  • Using the iBook with the cover closed

Can you hook up external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc and use the iBook with the cover closed? I know that usually closing the cover puts it to sleep.

The keyboard is an important component of the cooling of the CPU. Excess heat dissipates through the keyboard. Closing the cover would cause damage to other components from the heat. You can run iTunes with the screen off if that helps. Do that in systems prefs>energy saver and set the screen to go off in three minutes (or one) and the CPU to stay on indefinetly.

  • Has there been trouble with the charger.  I am getting to re-order but the one i had the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?

Has there been any trouble with the charger?  I am getting ready to re-order but the one i had.... the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?  Thanks.

Can you also see blackening in the power jack on the PowerBook? If so, I would be worried that the surge also damaged the computer/
Does the computer run OK on just the battery? If it is working on battery power, that limits the number of things inside the computer that could have been fried.
If the computer is severely damaged by the surge, it's not worth repairing. However, a couple of posters in Apple forums said their homeowners'/renters' insurance paid them replacement value of their computer after power surge damage due to known problems on the grid, like the huge power outage that hit the SW Untied Stats and part of Mexico yesterday.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate when keyboard/mouse used... disconnect display, open lid and laptop display will not activate... only way out is hold power button.  Worked fine before Lion update.   Any Advice?

Thanks very much Coander15... I've printed the doc you pointed me towards and I'll run through it.. hoping it helps!
Before I installed Lion I simply hit any key on the keyboard or clicked the mouse...
The keyboard is USB (usually connected to monitor which is connected to laptop... have tried direct connect to laptop as well with no luck) and mouse is USB wireless to one of those tiny plug in's... have tried direct connect USb mouse as well with no luck.
I could plug the closed/sleeping laptop into the monitor and unplug from the monitor without incident all day/night... always worked fine.
Had heard something about this happening w/ Lion but went ahead anyway.
    Oh well...
Hoping your pointer helps... will let you know how it turns out.  Thanks very much for responding!!!

    ronicr76,
First it would be helpful if you post the exact model, year and OS version you have.
    > The LED light is on but only when the laptop is closed<
So that light is the sleep indicator and tells us that the laptop is going to sleep when you close the lid. That would be normal behavior so the machine is still working. Possibly you're experiencing a backlight failure. With the machine supposedly "on" use a flashlight to carefully examine the screen. Do you see the desktop? Yes? machine is still running and something is wrong with the backlight.
You should immediately backup your computer or at the very least pull vital files off. With the computer hooked to another Mac (The way this is done depends on the exact MacBook, E.g.FireWire 800 to FireWire 800.) Then you restart the computer and hold the "t" key down. This puts your MacBook into "target mode":

Once your files are off try an SMC reset:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Are you able to get the backlight back on by opening and closing the display? Yes? Broken backlight cable refer to qualified service place. Even if it doesn't come on and you can still see the desktop with a flashlight it is still probably the backlight. Could be the a backlight problem also.
