Advice on Quadra 840AV

I'm a complete newbie to this technology so hopefully you can help me out here!
I have two Quadra 840AV workstations that I'd like to get operational or at the very least investigate the contents of the hard drives. So far I've been unsuccessful. Tried connecting to a modern monitor with an adapter which failed to show anything when the system was turned on. Bought a compatible monitor which again didn't work.
So now I'd like to use a modern PC to access the contents of the hard drives and maybe if at all possible allow me to use the original operating system on the hard drive as if it was still housed in the Quadra chasis. Any advice to this end would really be appreciated.

a Network Access Disk sounds like a good idea to get this system kick started. So I simply need to apply this to a floppy and insert it into the Quadra?
With access to another working Macintosh computer of that era (with a built-in floppy drive), you would use Disk Copy 4.2 (the Make A Copy button) or 6.3.3 (the Make a Floppy command in the Utilities menu) in order to create a sector-copied floppy from the disk image.
If you wish to make a startup floppy on a PC, this is one possible method (should be OK with older Windows versions and built-in PC floppy drives; it may or may not work under Vista and with external USB drives):
Download the old freeware utility Aladdin Expander 2.0 (try a Google search) or possibly a newer StuffIt Expander for Windows.
A disk-image utility for PC will also be needed. For example, the shareware utility WinImage 6.10.
Install the programs on the PC.
Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB (HD) diskette through the FORMAT A: command in DOS or via the "full" formatting command under Windows. This is important.
Download the Network Access Disk 7.5 .bin file (NetworkAccess_Disk7.5.sea.bin, link above). The Windows operating system may truncate the file name. Drag this downloaded file (as it is) to Aladdin Expander 2.0. Aladdin Expander will decode the file into an archive (document) called Network Access Disk 7.5, and automatically decompress the latter into a Network Access folder.
Inside the Network Access folder you will find a Read Me document and a file called Network Access.image.
Insert the empty PC-formatted diskette into the PC's floppy drive.
If WinImage is used, drag the Network Access.image onto the program icon. In the WinImage application window, select Write disk (from the Disk menu) or click on the Write disk icon. When the operation has been completed, immediately eject the diskette. In order to make this work, it may become necessary to (temporarily) switch off any anti-virus software.
You should now have a startup floppy for the Quadra 840AV.
The procedure is a variant of a method described in the 68000 FAQ (here). Please note that this is an exception to a general rule. Normally, do NOT use StuffIt/Aladdin Expander to decode .bin files on a PC. Always keep the MacBinary (.bin) encoding intact until on a Mac.
The disk drive is unfamiliar to me as I can see no eject button, do you simply push it in whilst the system is off or is there some other technique?
Yes. The floppy will come out when the Mac shuts itself down (a command in the Special menu). Otherwise, the normal way of ejecting a floppy (which does not contain the active operating system) is to drag its icon to the Wastebasket (Trash). If necessary, there is an emergency eject button (under a small hole, accessible via a paper clip).

  • Macintosh Quadra 840AV, problem with startup

    Hey all,
I got a brand new (old) Macintosh Quadra 840AV computer from my friend. I acquired it with powermac 8100 mainboard on deck, and then it started good, I had a signal on monitor and system started up. When I put an original 840AV mainboard it doesn't start. Why? I equipped 840AV mainboard with a new 3,6V battery. Maybe a problem with a RAM?

Solved. I put a video RAM instead of standard RAM. :>

  • Re: Why can't I turn Filevault off ?

I had major problems trying to remove 'Vilefault', getting the same error. After much work I traced it back to a corrupt file.
The file could not be deleted, copied or opened and no amount of hacking made any difference (command line rm/cp/mv as root made no impact, the file would reappear instantly). It was a damaged settings file for Parallels Desktop that was probably the reason my XP instance completely melted.
I also tried the vfcrack process at http://crypto.nsa.org/vilefault/23C3-VileFault.pdf but it looked like the corrupt file stopped that too.
Apple Support were useless inasmuch as this was off-script for them and could only suggest a total wipe & re-install. As far as they are concerned, if you've tried a root-user delete then you no further options.
My final resort was to move as much as possible out of my (filevaulted) home directory and into an open file structure at the top level of the hard drive. Even a move to a new user account would still leave me with the blocked out filevault area on the disk so, eventually, I will need to hose & rebuild if it bugs me too much.

Backup your user folder to another HD or computer. Your profile indicates that you have a few options, then Erase & Install, using the same username/password combo as the one you backed up, go through the setup, and copy the backed up data to your desktop folder and replace the new items with the saved ones. Once you're up and running, review the results you get from searching these forums for filevault and file vault and rethink how you're using it.

  • How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive?

How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive without starting that drive
and seeing the system profiler? In fact, because the drive wont start up, Now I am wondering if it is pre-intel. ? CMD-I doesn't do it. Thanks

Why mess with this? Well, I got the HDDs and the enclosure from my previous PPC, so I'd like to make use of it all without $pending again.
I don't see any problems with using the card and drives on your new Mac. Hardware is too pricey to just leave behind if you can't help it. With the new drivers I suspect you'll be able to use your drives, I just don't think you'll be able to boot from them if the interface card requires drivers. They should still be very fast storage devices, and probably reliable due to the ongoing support the vendor has provided.
I went through the same type of issue when I bought my Dual G4 1.42 Tower (upgraded from a Quadra 840AV ). Several of my devices were SCSI (I was into SCSI Wide/Fast drive arrays at the time for video capture), and I was able to use an Adaptec card for scanning for several years with Jaguar and Panther. I'd spent quite a bit of cash to ensure high quality and performance and didn't want to loose all of the investment. Eventually the SATA hard drives and other USB and Firewire replacements became so cheap and performance improved enough that loosing SCSI with Tiger was not a big deal. I do think I should get about 5 years of hardware compatibility with most products and I keep older Mac's around for dedicated services as long as they aren't a costly maintenance issue.

  • Apple Video Player Replacement

I just got a PowerMac G3 with a/v in out to replace my Quadra 840av. The main purpose of this system is to convert S-Video to RBG(VGA). System came with 10.2.8 installed and no System 9 folder. :O So I replaced the noisy HDD and added some more ram. Then I installed OS 9 and updated it to 9.2.2. After that I put 10.3 on a sperate partition. For the **** of it I tried runing Apple Video Player in classic mode, but ofcourse it didn't work.
So I was wondering, is there a program out there for OSX that will display the S-Video in? Otherwise todo what I need todo I'll just have to boot into OS9.
P.S. I noticed that the S-Video in on the Quadra and the G3 have the same connector as a/v multi outs on most modern computers. Is there a way to use a component dongle with it? I tried using one but niether systems liked on Apple Video Player.

'fraid so Unfortunately it got left behind in the transition to OSX. I guess there weren't enough machines out there to make it worth it, especially since a 300MHz isn't exactly the hottest machine out there for doing video.

  • Ni-daq 4.9.4 error on a mac

    Hi all,
I have just finished assembling a really old Mac Quadra 840AV and installed a nb-mio-16L card. After several attempts I still cannot get any daq vi to read from the card. I am running Labview 4 with about 250MB on hard disk.
The error I get is -10240. Prior to installing Ni-daq 4.9.4, I tried the standard Ni-daq shipped with labview 4 to read from the card. The error it produced then was -100050.
The card works fine with a quardra 700 and labview 3, but it does not work with a quardra 800AV and labview 4. And it produces different errors with different versions of Ni-daq !
Does anyone know why this is happening?? Or have any idea why it might be happening? Is it because labview 4 is not compatiable with ni-daq 6.9.4??
    I would appreciate any thoughts.
    Regards,
    -Setu.

    Setu;
You are indeed working with really old versions of driver and Labview.
It's looking like you still have the older version of the driver installed on the machine. The first step, before upgrading the driver, is to make sure the older version is uninstalled properly from your machine.
At this point, I suggest you to uninstall all National Instruments Software you have installed on that machine, remove your card from the machine, reboot the computer and install the latest version of the softwares you have there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Upgrade existing Mac Pro graphics card

I'd like to upgrade the graphics card that's in my Mac Pro that I bought last year. Doesn't have to be the latest one that came out with the new ones this week. The ATI Radeon X1900 XT would be fine.
Can I purchase one from Apple? I tried Otherworld Computing (macsales.com) and they didn't have any options.
    Any suggestions?
I'm not looking for a Windows only card as I've seen some threads referring to, I want something that I can use natively in Mac OS X Leopard.
    Thanks

I bought a Pro as I was led to believe that it was 'upgrade-able' and in the future I was able to change components as new developments came down the pipeline. Now I find this not to be true , I may as well have bought an iMac or Macmini.
What in earth is the point of having upgrade slots if you can't upgrade things ??
This whole thing smacks of utter incompetence and a tinge of underhand business attitude , forcing people to buy a new £3,000 computer just to change their video card. Its OUTRAGEOUS !
This is the LAST time I will ever buy a mac tower , it's back to iMacs for me . I had similar problems in 1994 when I bought a Quadra 840av , then Apple not only changed to PPC but from Nu Bus to PCI !
My suggestion : if you don't expect to upgrade your computer within 6-12 months of owning it , buy something integrated and accept you'll just have to change every 2-3 years. You'll save money in the long run and won't feel ripped off.
Apple should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen , imo it's disgraceful.
Finally the fact that the X1900 is a buggy , noisy pile of junk doesn't help. The 8800 would be a fantastic upgrade but as I've outlined earlier , that option has been taken away from us.
    Really really shocking.

  • Error +10800 in AI Single Scan

    Hi all,
I am running an old macintosh quadra 840av with labview 4.0 and an nb-mio-16l data acquisition card.
I created the attached vi to read 8 channels, but i keep getting error 10800 in AI Single Scan. I can't figure out why. I also tried using AI Read but then I got the same error code in AI Buffer Read.
Doing an unbufferred acquisition works fine.
I am attaching the VI for reference. I am not sure why this is happening. I have tried everything I know, but nothing seems to work. Please help!
    Regards,
    -Setu.
P.S> I tried using both AI SingleScan.vi from zadvd.llb and AI.llb in the VI.llb directory
    Attachments:
    Acquire(forum).vi ‏118 KB

Aha! You want to use AI Read in this case, not AI Single Scan. Replace that VI with AI Read, and you'll have to wire an input to tell it how many scans to read from the buffer (I'm assuming 1 seconds' worth of data, since you have a 1 second delay in your loop). If you don't wire that, it will read the entire buffer.
Sometimes you'll get an error when you've started a continuous acquisition, and then try to perform an unbuffered acquisition, like single scan. Make it a common practice to call the AI Clear after your loop is terminated. You may have to run this VI once all the way through to stop the continuous acquisition, and then it will work the next time.
This occurs for me if the VI is running, and then I press the stop button on the LabVIEW too
lbar instead of my stop button on the Front Panel; the acquisition isn't cleared, and the next time I run it (providing LabVIEW was not shut down), I'll get errors like this.

  • Winblows user getting pummeled by old mac..  Printer install question

    Hello All,
Forgive my stupidity, I`m researching how to do this without much luck, so I thought this would be a good place for help..
Trying to print files off an old Mac quadra 840av.. Can someone tell me what printers are natively supported or how to install a printer driver or what printers have mac drivers to print off the necessary files? It is currently running OS 7.5
It does have an external scsi drive I can put all the files on, but then, and correct me if I`m wrong, I`ll need to purchase software to be able to read these files on a PC.. So printing them seemed to be the best bet.. They are old tax files etc, so a printed copy is just fine by me if I cant access them somehow via PC. Any help/insight is most appreciated.

Configuring the printer? Hmmm? These are Macs! I've always just plugged the printers in and they print (assuming power on and ink or a ribbon available). When your operating system is installed, it puts printer drivers for printers in the Chooser folder in the System Folder. If you have a printer not covered by the default bunch, then one has to install the printer drivers for that printer, which usually came with the printer on floppies or a CD (depending on age.) Some of the printer manufacturers keep downloadable copies on their websites, but some, like HP, remove them when THEY think they're "obsolete" and won't make them available. Then one has to search on the internet for some of the sites where old drivers are collected and made available for download.
If you can transfer the files to an external scsi drive, then any other later Mac with an external scsi port should be able to use them up through the PowerMac 9600 series and the beige G3s. However, along about there Apple switched from stock scsi ports and they had to be added through a pci card. However, later Macs with a PCI card should still be able to read your scsi hard drive, provided you have a scsi cable to do the connecting: there are at least three or four different scsi connector styles and you might need an adapter cable, depending....
Reading the files on another Mac could be done by the program which made them originally, or depending on what type of files they are, by any number of other programs, often even freeware or shareware programs. Unless they are ASCII text files, reading them on a Windows machine is more problematical. There is the Apple File Exchange control panel which might be able to translate the file into a Windows format you can use. Also, the commercial program MacLinkPlus can translate a lot of different file types, too, which make them readable on Windows. However, if you are talking about some esoteric file type, then MacLinkPlus may not be able to do it.
The only other adjustment is the Page Setup off the File Menu, which just has some obvious choices for printing your page.

  • Gigabit Ethernet to Mac Mini File Transfer

After trying to upgrade my G4 and having the accelerator "kill" my power supply, I've decided to just invest in a Mac Mini until the intel chip G5s arrive.
I am now in the process of transferring my data from my G4 hard drives (2) into my serrogant mac mini. One drive has all my old files from when I had a Quadra 840AV and ran OS 9. Then I have a different drive that runs Tiger and my most recent work (animation short). Before the transfer I made sure both machines had the same OS just to make sure everything would run smoothly.
After launching the mini's Migration Assistant and restarting my G4 and holding down the "T" key, via firewire. Only the OS 9 drive shows up on my mini desktop? What happened to my OS X drive? I have disconnected everything and just started up my G4 and it boots right into OSX. Same with the Mini. But when I try to connect the two. Only OS9 is seen by the Mini?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated "o)
    Lyn

Hi Lynne ! Glad that you found a way to transfer your data, and thanks for the clarification. Being a recent Windows switcher, I don't always think as a Mac user, and although I do know of the Gigabit Ethernet G4, I didn't think of it when I read your post. Thanks for posting back the solution, too.
Sorry for having been of very little (no) help.
    Enjoy your new Mini !

  • Transferring files onto vintage Macs

    Hey all,
I have a few vintage Macs and I need to transfer some files onto those Macs from my MacBook Pro. How-to do that?

    Hi,
Both the Quadra 840AV and the Power Macintosh 7100 series have built-in Ethernet (you will need an external AAUI to RJ-45 transceiver, such as the Apple Ethernet Twisted-Pair Transceiver Model No M0437). This means that you should be able to carry out transfers via an Ethernet network.
The old operating systems have to be capable of handling TCP/IP (the downloadable International English System 7.5.3 has the required components). A dedicated FTP client (or a suitable web browser) would have to be added. Alternatively, you could set up an FTP server (perhaps the now free NetPresenz) on the old Macs.
If the LC 475 has a network card, Ethernet would be possible here too. Otherwise, LocalTalk could be used for transfers between the LC 475 and one of the other machines (in a simple form through a MiniDIN-8M/MiniDIN-8M printer cable between the printer ports).

  • Advice on external back up drive

    Hi,
I've just purchased an external LaCie 500GB quadra HD to back up my internal drives (40GB and 120GB both partitioned in half with OS9 and OSX) and just wanted some advice as to how I should set up the external drive and what would be the best software to use.
Should I partition the external drive to give me a bootable section on the drive?
Various software (LaCie, Silversomething, Retrospect) came with the drive and I already had Data Backup that I got from MacUser magazine.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Best regards
    Martin

    gmanucia,
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.9 Combo update ( PPC, not for Intel systems). Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • In need of advice for backing up HD Video

So we returned from a vacation,
where I shot all the video in HD 1080p.
We got back, and I used Final Cut Express to convert the AVCHD files from .mkv to .mov files.
All together, the total files come to a whopping 78.93 GB. Wow.
I need to back these up to DVD's or something
(My wife says she doesnt want them on an external hard drive, her last one died)
is there a way I could compress these?
or should I use quicktime/visualhub to bring down the quality a little?
any advice would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

    Solutions:
    1) ignore the wife and backup to a good hard drive such as a LaCie quadra. usb or firewire.
    2) Buy Time Capsule and backup to it.
    3) what would i do? Use MPEGStreamClip to make mp4 files , to control the file size. The picture will still look very good but it does not do 5.1 channel sound. Handbrake does but since the file is HD probably will crash while encoding so will VisualHub. Another consideration, MPEGStreamClip on a 2 gig HD movie will take 15 hrs on a Mac pro let alone an iMac.
Currently not too many programs will do HD encoding.
    4) backup to optical disc, I'd never do that ; too many compatibilty issues with different drives perceived for future usage.
    5) back to the wife, user should alway have three backup stategies; ie main drive then backup # 1 then backup #2. I've backup to external and internal hard drives for over a decade without problems.

  • Need advice on setting up RAID.

I just purchased a Mac Burly 4 Bay Hard Drive Array with 4 ST31500341AS - Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1500 GB SATAII 32 MB cache Drives.  I will be using this array to store HD 1080i HD video.  I am working on a Mac Pro I just installed  a LYCeSATA PCI Card  to connect the Mac Burly.  I need some advice on what the best possible RAID set up would be for me, back up is important.

    Hi,
I've the same machine and have a pair of samsung 64GB SSD's striped as a boot disk.
Originally I had them in the optical drive bay using a kit from maxupgrades.com, it worked like a charm. I decided to change that as I wasn't using all four drives and bought the icy dock carrier to place each drive in their own sled (still striped though) and I've two velociraptors in the other two drives.
I bought the maxupgrades kit for around the $40 mark and had to get it shipped to the UK. I sold it recently on ebay here in the UK and got £1 for it!!
As for the MAXPower eSATA 6G controller card, I've one of those hooked up to my Lacie 4big Quadra external RAID.
Funny thing with this is with my previous 3big triple usingFireWire 800 all I had to do was power the 3big up and the volumes would mount on the desktop.
With the 4big RAID using eSATA when I power up the drive nothing happens. You have to actively disconnect either the eSATA cable at the back of the RAID or at the card then reconnect it thereupon the drives mount on the desktop.
I've rambled on a bit but I hope I may have helped a little.

  • Blocking issues with the new d2 quadra

I just bought 2 of the newest 500GB d2 quadras and I attempted to set up a level 1 RAID with them daisy chained to my imac via firewire 800 and using disk utility. When I went to set the RAID Block size to 256k and create the RAID I got the screen of death. I then restarted and it did it again on start up. I unplugged the drives and started the computer back up and tested each one individually. I reformatted and tried again, same thing happened.
I took them into the apple store and it happened again on their computers. We tested other Block configurations (32k, 64k, 128k) and they all worked except 256k. The genius's didn't know what the problem could be. A Leopard issue, hard drive issue, or what else.....
Is anyone else having this issue? Should I be worried that there is an issue with one of the drives I am trying to RAID and return and get a new drive, or should I just set the block to 128k and not worry. I am pro photographer and am going to be storing and accessing RAW files in large amounts on these drives. What are the benefits and drawbacks for 128k formatting and 256k formatting?
Any advice would be great! Thanks!

marisaholmes, welcome to the Apple Boards,
This board is for the discussion of a specific piece of Apple Hardware called the Xserve RAID. I think there is probably a more appropriate board for this question where you are more likely to find an answer.
