AEBS sees drive, but not the partition on it

Hi folks,
I try to connect a WD 1TB SATA2 drive in a Fantec USB enclosure* to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I have tons of stuff on the drive, "unified" from various older external and internal drives.
Now, while Airport Utility "sees" the physical disk in the list of Airdisks, it does not actually mount the single HFS+ (Journaled) formatted partition/volume on it.
1) It mounts nicely on my MacBook Pro, and I can also access it using MacDrive on my PC.
2) I checked it using Disk Utility, everything is fine.
3) I even checked it in Disk Warrior, and rebuilt the directory structure for good measure.
4) The partition's name is only 14 characters, no spaces, no High ASCII characters.
5) It mounts without problems on my Win XP PC with MacDrive 7 via USB.
I tried rebooting the AEBS, but no success. Another, older 250 GB external drive (also HFS formatted) connected fine, the volume immediately appeared in Airport Utility, no restarting necessary (sadly it's an IDE enclosure, not SATA).
*The Fantec enclosure uses a JMicron JM20336 SATA to USB chipset, if anyone cares to know.
EDIT: latest Mac OS, latest AEBS firmware 7.3.2, latest Airport Utility on Mac and PC, etc.
I'm stumped, why can't the AEBS see the volume?
I hope anyone has an idea what's wrong. Maybe the enclosure is not compatible with the AEBS?

Ok, I had the chance to test another SATA drive in the same HD enclosure, and Airport Extreme recognized the drive. It was formatted as FAT. Other partitions on the same drive were formatted NTFS, and the Airport warned me about a faulty disc.
In any case, it is now verified that it is not the enclosure, but seemingly the drive itself that isn't recognized by the AEBS.
Next, I did various tests to see what is wrong. Remember, this is a brand new 1TB Western Digital Green (3 platters, the most recent model). Other (smaller) drives in the same or other enclosures work fine.
*Test 1:* format the drive using HFS (Journaled)
Expected result: partition should mount as volume with name "xD".
Actual result: partition does not mount (as can be seen on the screenshot)
*Test 2:* format the drive as NTFS using MacFUSE
Expected result: error alert by AEBS (faulty drive)
Actual result: no luck (see screenshot above)
NOTE: At this point, I didn't have the option in Disk Utility to format as FAT - I don't know why.
*Test 3:* format the drive as NTFS using a Windows XP PC using the Management Console
Expected result: error alert by AEBS (faulty drive)
Actual result: error alert by AEBS (faulty drive)
NOTE: After this test, the option in Disk Utility to format as FAT has reappeared. Maybe formatting in XP fixed some partition table error? Or the disk is now formatted in MBR mode rather than GUID?
*Test 4:* format as FAT (using Disk Utility)
Expected result: mount the partition
Actual result: partition mounts! As you can see in the screenshot, the volume name is "XD" instead of "xD" because FAT only supports upper case volume names.
*Test 5:* format the drive as HFS (Journaled) again
Expected result: mount the partition
Actual result: Disk Utility fails to delete the FAT partition (see screenshot)
At this point, I am trying a few things to delete the FAT partition. First, I reformat using FAT, which succeeds. Formating as NTFS also works. I click on the drive icon rather than the volume icon, and see that the disk IS using the Master Boot Record scheme. I guess this is why I can't format the partition as HFS...
*Test 6:* re-partition the drive with 1 HFS (Journaled) partition, this time specifically setting MBR as scheme.
Expected result: formatting will fail, because I guess HFS doesn't work on MBR partitioned drives
Actual result: yup, Disk Utility fails to do this
*Test 7*: re-partition the drive, using GUID with 1 HFS (Journaled) partition
Expected result: partition mounts
Actual result: partition mounts - SUCCESS!
CONCLUSION:
If a drive fails to mount in AEBS, there is most likely something wrong with the partition table. Try repartitioning the drive (either using GUID or MBR) and see if this fixes the problem.
Hope that helps,
Stefan

  • Sees one but NOT the other.  We need both.

We just got an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and when my wife plugged it in the Mac computer saw it and paired with it. And when she tried to get it to pair with her iPad... it did... but then the Mac computer couldn't see it. (It told her she had to set it up first on iPad, then on the computer-- so she deleted it off the Mac computer list.)
How do we get it to see BOTH her computer and iPad?
I sure hope this is Apple simple because we are not computer wizards.
    Thanks so much, Dan

when she tried to get it to pair with her iPad... it did... but then the Mac computer couldn't see it.
That's correct. The keyboard can only be paired with one device at a time (otherwise how would it know which device to send the keystrokes to?).
To switch between using the keyboard on different devices, you should delete the pairing from the one device and then add it to the other.

  • My pictures and music from a dead Imac are on an external hard drive. My Windows 8 sees the hard drive but not the data. How do I get the files to my PC?

    this is confusing

    Hi Bob.
I was actually confused in trying to navigate where to ask the question in the first place within the Support Community framework. I've been away from the Apple world for many years now and obviously this world of technology moves very fast, yes? So that's the reason my opening query mentions confusion.
Before I visited here I spent quite some time Googling the topic finding tons of answers going back MOSTLY 6-8 years all of which were fairly specific and geared toward now obsolete versions of the question or assumed my Apple computer was up and running or I had an "unformated" external hard drive.
I didn't find anything wrong with the advice to use MacDrive but of course I was hoping not to have to use my credit card to do this------------what has to be fairly routine process. After I Googled "alternatives to MacDrive" I found a free ten day trial run for Paragon. It worked for all the picture files but can't see the old movie or music. I'm still working it out. Maybe I'm missing something. Anyways it's hard to communicate with experts who seem to want you to already be on a certain level or they will simply leave you in the dust with their "help."

  • Apple put in a new hard drive, but not the computer is VERY LOUD!

I just got my 13 month old Intel iMac back from the Apple store -- it needed a new hard drive. When I first turned on the computer, it was very loud, and I thought they gave me someone else's computer by mistake, so I checked the Serial Number, and apparently it's my computer.
I can't take this noise. What's going on? The fan wasn't broken, but this sounds like a new fan in the computer that is much louder than the old fan.
Also, the Apple geniuses told me the computer would use Time Machine to install all my old settings (I have an external hard drive hooked up to the iMac). But it's not working at all. Whenever I tell the new hard drive to "Restore to a Time Machine Backup" and select the backup hard drive, the computer screen goes gray, and it starts all over again (with the "Hello" screen in all the different languages.
Please help. I guess the MIP issue is the noise -- I can't work with a computer this loud. It gives me a headache. Should I just take it back to the Apple store, and have the noise fixed first? There never was a noise problem before I took the computer in for the broken hard drive.
    Thanks.

    HI,
    Try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
If that doesn't help, take it back.
Tip... whenever you take a computer in for service and you pick it up, make sure it's running without problems *before you leave*. Especially in this case where you got it home and now have this noise issue.
    Carolyn

The only thing is we need to buy this software. if there is a free solution to inter change files between NTFS and HFS it would be better,
Don't use NTFS, remove your data off it first and change the format to something the Mac and PC can read, but doens't cost money or require software.

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

  • Can see drive, but not volume with AEBS

Perhaps an odd question: I've been using my airport extreme base station as an NAS drive with my Seagate FreeAgent 380Gb drive for some time now, but after moving and setting up a new network (same settings and whatnot, but different geographical location), I can no longer mount the volume through the finder. I can see the drive using the Airport Utility, but not the volume that I want to mount. The volume shows up fine when I plug directly to my computer.
Oh, and it's mounted NFS+ and Disk Utility doesn't see any problems that need repairs on it.
Does anybody have any insight into this issue? Anybody else had the same problem?

is this only while using the remote app on the iPhone? if you just use the regular appleTV remote can you click on an play streamed (i.e. unsynced) content?
I have all the latest updates and don't have this problem at all but i don't have an iPhone to use as remote...

Just want to avoild spending hours migrating everything across....

Yes, I can read but just can't write DVD's. I get:
This disc can’t be verified and might be unreliable. Try again using a new blank disc (error code 0x80020063).
Originally I thought it was the old Moutain Lion DVD drive issue (but have had the drive recently replaced by Apple), so I tried creating a new account, which worked.
In the old account I have reset SMU, Pram... but no change.

  • ITunes opens but without any text showing.  Drop down menus have text but not the app itself. I have a Mac Powerbook Pro running Windows XP under Boot Camp.

Running under Windows XP,  a few upgrades ago iTunes started opening without any text showing in the application.  Clicking on PLAY will play music but no text shows to indicate what's playing and no text to show music library. Drop down windows show text but not the app itself.
Subsequent upgrades and reinstalls have not corrected the problem, When I run under iOS (Snow Leopard), iTunes opens with text and runs correctly.
    Help!

Because I created FAT32 partition using Boot Camp tool few days ago I installed my custom copy of Windows XP with SP3, IE7 and WMP10 integrated using nLite (for WMP10 integration use RVM Integrator). I did not use Boot Camp tool this time - I just booted CD using Option key. Then I installed Boot Camp 2.0 drivers you can find on Mac Disk 1. After this I installed Boot Camp drivers 2.1 update. In Add or remove Programs I checked drivers - I uninstalled old drivers which call identical, but you can skip this. Everything works fine BTW it is better to format your partition to NTFS - you have much less disk errors, you do not waste time for disk errors scans during Windows startup, your data are much more safe. If you need NTFS write permissions use great tool Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX or open source NTFS driver.

  • Disk utility showing recover partition but not main partition

I have a Macbook Pro A1278 that has been dropped.  I pulled the hard drive and ran seatools on it to verify it has no physical defects.  The disk utility shows the recovery partition but not the main partition.  It infrequently will boot to the users partition.  I usually get the flashing folder with a question mark in it.  What is the next step to try to backup the data on the drive and reinstall OS X.

Blocking downloads to hard drive, but not flash drives
A nonprofit has asked me to configure new Windows 7 computers so that all content is BLOCKED from the hard drive, but any downloads may be downloaded to the individual's flash drive.
The nonprofit allows individuals to play games, check e-mails, but we have a problem with them trying to upgrade Firefox, Google, etc.
They want all configuration to the DEFAULT STATUS after a person log off the computer....no upgrades to any programs!
I will occasionally upgrade programs once a month or so, as the volunteer administrator.
They have changed the controls from Windows ME and XP, when I was a computer programmer and installer (I also worked during Windows 3.11, 95 and 98/98 SE versions as well)...
    Anyone help me, please?

    1. You can change security with cacls function. However if you do it in wrong way, you can cut the branch you are sitting on:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490872.aspx
    2. If you are working in Active Directory, consider Group Policy
    3. Consider third pty software for granular access control (DeviceLock,...)
    4. There is nearly nothing that you can transfer from previous technologies. (Even nice
steady state in Windows XP has no continuation. Consider
    kiosk mode in Windows 8.1)

Mavric doesn't support my 5 years old Big Screen Display, OR? Tried to connect my Mac Book Pro after installing Mavric, The Screen didn't work as before. I could only see the Desktop but not the movies for example.
    <E-mail Edited by Host>

It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files.
