Agent resident memory utilization and Agent Virtual Memory Growth is HIGH

I have been receiving many alerts from EM on agents resident memory and virtual memory growth is high. Every time the agent is getting restarted by watchdog.
I am wondering where exactly the problem is ...!

  • Agents on App-Server hosts alerts "Resident Memory Utilisation" 300Mb

    I've recently upgraded our GRID installation to 11g - for both OMS and Agents.
    But now I get alerts on both our Application-Server hosts complaining of high Agent resident memory utilisation (frequently higher than 300,000Kb)
    The default warning & critical thresholds are set at 128000 and 256000 respectively - and the documentation seems to suggest that these could be trimmed downwards rather than upwards.
    (Running on Windows Server 2003R2 (64) - with 12Gb of memory)
    Is this situation necesarily bad or unusual?

    There are quite a few targets on these boxes (16 each) since there's a AS Mid-tier and Infra-tier on each one.
    So, I've changed the thresholds upwards.

  • Agent resident memory utilization ALERT question

    Hi all,
    Every night during the incremental db backups (and during the weekly full db backup) i get an alert for the "Agent resident memory utilization" level. I did find this similiar post but it didnt' help me out much (Agent memory utilization under Linux
    I want to know if i should be concerned with this alert and how i can tune to get rid of it. Does anyone know how to handle this?? I found the following in the oracle documentation about this alert:
    1 Agent
    The oracle_emd target is a representation of the Oracle Management Agent. The Oracle Management Agent is the Management Agent used by Oracle Enterprise Manager. This target type exposes useful information required to monitor the performance of the Management Agent.
    Most of the help topics in this helpset use the term Management Agent to refer to the Oracle Management Agent.
    1.1 Agent Process Statistics
    The EMD Process Statistics provides information about the performance and resource consumption of the Management Agent process. This metric is collected by default on an interval of 1038 seconds. A value that can be changed in the default collection for the oracle_emd target.
    1.1.1 Agent Resident Memory Utilization (KB)
    The amount of resident memory used by the agent and all of its child processes in KB.
    I also get nightly alert for Commit waits but i don't think they are related. Can someone please shed some light on this alert for me? Here is the full alert that i'm getting:

    If your Agent is really getting up to the Warning or Critical Threshold set for the agent resident memory utilization" metric, you can increase the numbers. by default, the Agent "Resident Memory Utilization (%) is set to 20% (Warning) and 30%(Critical) while "Resident Memory Utilization (KB) is 128000 (Warning) and 256000 (Critical)
    From Targets > All Targets > Select the Agent > Click Metric and Policy Settings at the bottom of the screen > Edit the Resident Memory Utilization as required.
    Or Instead changing the Threshold, on the same Edit screen, you can simply change the "Number of Occurrences" before an alert is triggered.
    Meanwhile it is important to check whether the use of such amount is normal.

  • Filevault and Secure Virtual Memory

    If I have filevault enabled and secure virtual memory am I reducing my system performance because it would be encrypting already encrypted data?
    What sorts of security breaches can occur by not enabling secure virtual memory?
    P.S would this protect against the hack where a thief can extract my RAM and read my system password stored inside?

    Yes, you are right but "not exactly."
    If the computer is a laptop and is stolen with an intact battery and has not been shut down, then data in RAM may be accessible. It may be difficult, however, to take a desktop Mac without removing power which would cause the RAM's content to be lost (except for PRAM.)
    As for cryogenically freezing the computer that would most likely require removing the computer to another location. Removing frozen chips would be difficult if one wished to avoid having them increase to a temperature where the data would be lost.
    In any event I don't think the above are even relevant concerns for the consumer user. What would the typical home user have on a computer that would merit such extreme measures. Handling something cold enough to freeze RAM sufficiently to recover its content requires special equipment. I don't think my neighbor really cares that much - and the hacker would need direct access to the hardware. I don't think I would let someone have access to my computer that showed up at my door with a large thermos of liquid nitrogen! Furthermore who would leave their computer turned on and accessible, then walk away from it if they were so security conscious that they needed to use FileVault and Secure VM?

  • High resident memory size when creating in-memory db

    Capsule summary: an in-memory db created with a cache size of 8 Gb reports a resident size of 2 Gb without any data stored in it.
    Details:
    We have a need for creating an entirely "in-memory" database, i.e. without a backing file store.The application in question will be writing to and reading from the db frequently, and there is no need to incur the penalty of writing out to disk.
    I read the white paper "Writing In-Memory Applications" published by Oracle, and modified our db creation code accordingly. More or less all I did was to allow "open" to be called with a NULL instead of file name.
    This seems to work just fine, in that no file is created, and both writing and querying seem to work correctly. However, the resident memory size, even without anything written to the database, seems inordinately high. For example, if I set the cache size to be 8 Gb (the size of physical memory on my Linux FC11 machine), the resident size reported by "top" is 2.0 Gb:

    Running strace on the process shows that there are three calls to mmap as soon as "open" is called, one of them being responsible for a majority of the allocation.
    Is this expected behavior? The documentation explicitly states the following:
    "... Note that the size you specify for your cache is actually a maximum size; DB will only use memory as required so if you specify a cache size of 1 GB but your data set is only ever 10 MB in size, then 10 MB is what the DB will use...."
    This does not appear to be consistent with what I am seeing.
    Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

    Have you checked what script is causing the issue ? anything from application ? and OLAP things running on this instance ? how many sql instances are running ? anyother application like sharepoint etc runinning on this host ?

  • Conky variables / process resident memory

    In my conky display, I want to display the total resident memory used by a process. ${top_mem mem #} only shows the percentage of total memory, which I do not want.
    I found that ${pid_vmsize pid} will output what I want, but I need to then determine the PID of the processes I want to show. I don't know how to do that. (I want those using the most memory, like what top_mem does).
    ${top_mem pid #} will output the PID I want, but I don't know how to take that PID and give it to ${pid_vmsize}.
    Does conky have any way to "pipe" the output of one command into the variable field of another? If not, any suggestions on how I can get what I want?

    i don't think conky supports piping or nesting it's own ${commands}, could be wrong though.
    what you'll likely end up doing is writing a short shell script to get the text that you want and call it with ${exec} or ${execi}.  if you want to add color or formatting in conky's syntax you can add ${anything} to the output of your script and call it with ${execp} or ${execpi} to tell conky to parse those values when displaying.

  • How to diagnose rapid memory growth in Solaris 10 java server application

    Hi,
    We have a production java based server that experienced large memory growth recently and we are looking for help in diagnosing what might be the cause. The memory footprint of this java server application is limited to 120M using the jvm -Xmx switch. The server process size held consistently at around 180M until an event happened that caused the process size to rapidly increase to aprox 3G. We used the java jstat command to check the application heap usage within the jvm was within the specified limits.
    This application can be performs java Runtime exec's to run simple shell scripts from a variety of java threads in the server app.
    We have attempted to search for a cause by analysing the output of the pmap, pfiles, and pstack commands but have been unsuccessfull at this. We have also attempted to run the libumem.so library with the application in the hopes of using mdb to find out where the heap usage is. Unfortunately when we followed the instruction on using limumem the application stopped working due an ELF error.
    The following are what we used for libumem:

    I was finally able to reproduce this problem where I observed that within a 5 minute time span the jvm process grew from around 180M (VS) / 100M (RSS) to 2G (VS) / 1G (RSS). Here are some samplings at the end of my dtrace run showing the largest allocations that were made. We suspect this might be a JVM bug (since jstat reports our heap is well below the 120M limit we specified). Do you have any suggestions on how we might resolve this issue ?

  • Rapid memory growth in jvm

    Hi,
    We have a production java based server that experienced large memory growth recently and we are looking for help in diagnosing what might be the cause. The memory footprint of this java server application is limited to 120M using the jvm -Xmx switch. The server process size held consistently at around 180M until an event happened that caused the process size to increase rapidly to aprox 3G within a 4 minute period. We used the java jstat command to check the application heap usage within the jvm and it was within the specified limits.
    We have collected a variety of diagnostic information (pmap, pstack, pfiles, etc - available on request) as well as output from dtrace using a script that is used to count the number of memory allocations. The dtrace script and tail end of this message.
    Any help in interpreting the dtrace output in the hopes of pinpointing a cause for the large memory allocations would be greatly appreciated.

    This isn't a heap space issue with the java application though, which is what these tools you mentioned would be used to diagnose. The heap space usage of our java app is remaining constant and below the specified limit of 120M but the process continues to grow as we speak.
    I can only conclude that this is most likely a jvm memory leak. I should have probably made this clearer in the subject heading.
    Anyone know how to file a bug against the solaris jvm ?

  • Kernel_task utilization and usb devices

    After updating to OS 10.5.2 from 10.4.11 - I noticed in the Activity Viewer
    that kernel_task was using between 40 and 50 shares and sometimes more
    (units/points/whatever) and the system overall seemed to be somewhat slow -
    apps would take longer than 10.4.11 to load - the splash screens would stay
    on screen longer etc. And I see (Not Responding) in the Activity monitor a
    lot more than I ever did before.
    I have done some cleanup - defrag - pre-binding - permissions rebuild etc.
    I read somewhere that USB devices/drivers could be responsible - so I
    started to unplug USB devices (I have about 15 of them) - and the
    kernel_task dropped to less than 2.
    One of the USB devices is a Light Stone Bio Feedback unit - since I had not
    used it in some time I had not loaded the software for it back when I got
    this MacBook Pro (2.33GHz Core2 Duo 3GB of RAM 256MB Video RAM 1680x1050
    with external 1900x1200).
    So I loaded the software for the Bio Feedback (The Journey to the Wild
    Divine - which coincidentally I wanted to do anyway to use the heart rate
    monitor function on it - still looking for Mac software to read the unit
    directly but for now the PC software works). Anyway - that resulted in the
    kernel_task dropping to around 25 on average. When I unplug the hub that has
    all the CH Products connected to it - FighterStick - Yoke - Pro Throttle and
    Pro Pedals (I thought the Pedals were broken but they seem to be working
    again) - the kernel_task dropped to below 2. As I unplug each individual CH
    Products device the kernel_task drops on average about 5 or less.
    I tried loading USB Overdrive to see if maybe some kernel extension that
    "read" the devices was installed that perhaps the kernel would not spend so
    many cycles on them - but no change in the CPU utilization for those
    devices. I have uninstalled USB overdrive (haven't rebooted yet - hoping the
    pedals still work after the reboot). The console doesn't show anything that
    would suggest a lot of polling or errors.
    So I am wondering if this is just the way things are and anytime I want to
    use the CH Products devices I have to take a 25 point CPU hit. I am thinking
    that it might be affecting the frame rate and such in X-Plane. Or does it
    sound like there is something out of whack on my system? Could it be
    something in OS 10.5.2 that still needs work form Apple (I am planning to
    send some of this info to Apple and CH Products as well).

    With all that plugged in - the kernel_task is about 30 (with Bio Feedback
    software installed) - and varies by a couple points up and down.
    If I unplug the Hub 2 with the CH products - or individually unplug the CH
    products devices - kernel_task drops instantly to 5 or less - and then runs
    between less than 2 and no more than about 5 or so - sometimes less than 1.
    I also have a Gravis GamePad Pro - a wireless Keyboard and Mouse - a M-Audio
    KeyStation 49e - and a UBfunkeys hub - which are generally not connected to
    this computer - but could be.
    For now I can unplug that hub when I am not using those devices - but when I do need to use them - I think they may be impacting overall performance.
    Has anyone else seen this? anyone have a solution?

    No solutions, but there does seem to be a connection with older or perhaps non-Apple USB devices.
    I've an older USB cam that works well with iChat and SecuritySpy while in Tiger. Restart into Leopard and kernel_task and syslogd continuously grab memory and CPU until they get so high the machine is useless. Switch video input to an external iSight and those two behave although I must restart to clear them. But, although iChat uses a similar amount of memory as it did under Tiger, it grabs over 90% of the CPU, once again making the machine useless for anything else.
    I also have an older Saitek joystick that works fine not only in Tiger but in Classic as well.
    In Leopard it often doesn't mount until I unplug/replug it in one or more times.
    My Apple KB and Kensington mouse seem to work OK (other then the mouse SW needs to be updated).

  • About "disk utilization" and "cpu utlization"

    I am writing an agent with snmp protocol. I want to konw the system's current "cpu utilization and disk utilization". But I have no choice now but use the system call:"df -k" and "vmstat". Can ANYONE show me another way??

    You might want to read about the kstat interfaces in Solaris . You can get the required statistics using kstat() calls.

    I don't know if I fully understand your question.
    From a planning view it is evaluated if a freight unit will fit into a resource. The optimizer will always evaluate if there is free space available. This is done based on the parameters that are in the freight unit and the parameters of the resource.
    If you want to evaluate the utilization of your resources this is designed to be done using BI. There is no monitor in TM 7.0. How this is done using BI I don't know. I think that there is not much standard available.
    For future releases it is considered to have a more user friendly overview of the resources. Also getting an overview on how much the resources are utilized at the moment. Also to make manual planning easier. Lets wait and see what SAP will produce.

    having a bit of trouble here - everything was working fine after migration (about 6months ago), and now mac users can't access e-mail.
     If I try to access EWS page (https://webmail.domain.co.ao/EWS/exchange.asmx) , i get

    Autodiscover and exchange web services point out to server1 (CAS), but when openning the respective webpages, the result is an error.
    I have already deleted and recreated the autodiscover and EWS virtual directories but with no success.

    Exchange Web Service in Exchange server configuration is working for all users in your Exchange environment, not just for one specific user. If you want to double make sure the EWS service in client side, we can directly access the EWS URL in IE of your
    Windows machine, and see whether a proper XML file is returned. If so, then we can safely ignore the web service test result.
    As for automatic signature application, do you mean
    Add a signature automatically to every message? Please try to remove the signature and reset it again to check whether the issue persists.

  • High Memory Growth

    We have a multi-master Sun DS setup , wherein we are observing a huge memory growth on only one of them. Memory growth started after third party plug-ins were installed on them, the issue should have been seen on both as plug-in were installed on both of them. We have esclated it to plug-in OEM.
    Have you faced any such issue in the past or do u know any tools preferably command to pull out these extra memory consumption?
    FYI, the plug-in being used is CP metadirectory for Sun Directory Syncronisations with other databases.

    Obviously, The first though was to hit 3rd party vendor for this cause, but they have a point " Plug-ins should have cause memory growth on both of them", whereas this is not the case. On the otherhand, We have the same plug-ins installed on our Dev & Stg environment, we dont see any similar issue there"
    Is there any way to list out memory consumptions specifically by connections, lib etc?
