AGP Graphics Card For A G4

I removed an ATI Radeon 9650 from a G5 and tried it in my G4 silver. The machine wouldn't boot up.
If the 9600 series are supposed to work for the silver G4 why did this card fail to even allow the machine to boot? Does anyone have a list of chip sets or cards from radeon that will work? I'm trying to create a video server connected to a 37" LCD and the 9200 PCI card I bought won't do the trick. I need an AGP card to replace the OEM GeForce 4 MX to get the image quality and frame rate up to viewable standards.

Thanks for the advise. Once I learned how to properly count to 3 and 11 the machine booted up and recognized the card. I finally got out the soldering stand with a magnifying glass attached to it to make the cuts around the edges of the scotch tape. Yes slow and deliberate is the way to do this. A fine point Exacto blade is essential. The blade I started out with was more like using a blunt object. The magnifying glass also let me see when the tape didn't pull away correctly leaving a partially exposed pin, Started over a few times. The blue 9650 card had about 30 odd pins and they were very close together.
This card, 9650, will not support mirror imaging for monitors. Also, the color started out funky. A reddish hue making everything purple. I played around with booting without the 42" Samsung powered on and that resolved the problem until the next time I tried to boot with the 20 "Mitsubishi monitor as well as the TV attached to the card. I finally got the color back to normal by playing with boot sequence and turning the TV on. The frame rate seems to be ok and the color/image quality is acceptable. The 9650 seems like it will do the trick. Unfortunately it is from my work machine and I can't explain away a missing graphics card. I was due for obsolescence replacement this year but Macs became a naughty word in our division. Too high end, Too pricey. I'm going to have to keep the G5 or be issued a Dell.
Now I just have to find a card. I'll hit up some of the C techs Monday and start begging nicely. The aim is to not spend any money or very little money to create this video server.

  • Best AGP graphics card for 1st gen Power Mac G5?

    I have a dual 2Ghz 1st generation Power Mac G5 (AGP Graphics).
I currently have the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO SE 256mb, but in my view it's not fast enough for sane Aperture use.
What do you recommend? I was looking at the ATI 800 XT, but surely there are newer and better ones.
Also, Is there a 850 XT onsale or was it only ever 'build to order'? I can't find it on ATI's website, they only have the 800 XT.
    Thanks

The 800xt is available from the apple store and I believe from ATI directly. Surf on over to barefeats.com and check out their performance tests on core image functions and various video cards, the 800 holds its own even with newer cards like the nvidia 7800 available as a bto in the newer G5's. The reason I believe that the 800xt is the end of the road for us AGP G5 owners is that even if we modded a newer card to work (as some out there are doing) there is a limit on the throughput, and the extra capacity goes unused. Getting the 800xt will get you through to the next generation of Powermacs-guess they will drop the power part-perhaps MacTowers-where PCI express will open up the options to whatever the PC community is putting out, with the exception of driver support I guess. But the 800 is good enough combined with 2 or more gigs of memory, and perhaps at somepoint, you might consider a RAID solution if you want to squeeze another year or so out without upgrading.

    Hi Kool,
I have to agree with the upgrade to a 9800XT. I too have a G5 dual 1.8, with the GeForce 5200FX/64 as stock. I upgraded to the 9800XT/256 last year, as I wanted to improve performance in Aperture. However, running benchmarks and the real world did not seem to compare well. For sure, running various benchmark tests showed that the 9800XT should indeed have been much faster.
However, in real use, it didn't. Certainly some things are - a few games run better - Redline is one I use a fair bit, and that can be driven harder, but not enough to make it better to play. But, almost everything else is pretty much the same, Finder feels pretty much identical either way. Perhaps one exception to this is the overall look of the display, it just feels much better with the 5200FX in, in Finder the text in the menus is much smoother, where with the 9800XT it is jagged.
One thing that did surprise me most is that Aperture performs much worse with the Radeon card. The adjuster controls are terrible to use, where with the GeForce they are almost completely smooth. Like the Finder display, photos seem to have much better colour range too.
I'm currently considering selling the Radeon on eBay, and trying to find a 5200FX with a bit more VRAM onboard. There are a lot of flashed PC cards on eBay at the moment, but I'm not sure if this would be a step backwards in losing the 'Ultra' badge.

  • Final Cut Express 2.0.3 and missing AGP graphic card

I had Final Cut Express 2.0.3 in my older G4 PPC Tower. But now that I've installed FCE 2.0.3 in my new iMac I get an error message telling me I need an AGP graphic card for the program to work.
    What's the deal?
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    Panther

Have a read of this thread (link).
FCE 2 is a PowerPC application so you won't get great performance through Rosetta. FCE 2 is looking for AGP graphics which were standard at the time but no longer present. You should look at upgrading (link) for best performance.

  • Unique interrupt for AGP graphic card

I'm not able to set unique interrupt for AGP graphic card (nVidia GeForce4/440) on MB MSI645 Ultra (MS-6547). I'm afraid this is reason, why my system W2000 hanging up eg. when I'm watching DivX movie (monitor, mouse a and keyboard freeze and sound going on). In the best case I'm sharing interrupt only with USB but mostly also with other devices as sound card etc. Asignment of interrupts ti PCI slots in BIOS don't help me.

When ACPI is enabled windows will place many devices on a single virtual IRQ, this is normal.
    I have on IRQ11:
    SB Live! 5.1
    ADSL PCI modem
    2xNEC USB2.0
    2xVIA USB1.1
    56K PCI modem
    GF4 Ti
    Realtek 8139 10/100 NIC
    All is working well.
For you I suggest you install the SiS chipset drivers and then try using the nVIDIA 28.32 VGA drivers.

  • Hardware missing -AGP Graphics card. How can I get my FCE 4 working on the new computer? Cheers

Hi I have just upgraded my computer to Mac OSX 10.6.7 now I cant open my FCE 4. Message reads, Hardware missing -AGP Graphics card. How can I get my FCE 4 working on the new computer? Cheers

Thanks, just so I know we are talking about the same items please let me know - When you say "run Prokit" do you mean downloaded? Which I did. I dont have Prokit 4.0.1 if you are referring to that, do I need this first? Please explain what application name I am looking for if other than Prokit which is sitting in my "download folder" do I need to manually put it into the apps folder? Sorry if the questions are layman but this area is not a very strong point for me. Thanks for your help so far.

what gives? the box says i have that card installed...is that the same as the Nividia card?

    Shane's Stock Answer #29
    You either need to either:
    1) use the following hack -
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
    or
    2) Upgrade to FCP 5

  • Get error msg. "Configuration error"  AGP Graphics Card

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 17". I migrated my software from my old computer, but when I tried to open Final Cut Express HD, I got an error message saying Configuration Error "AGP Graphics Card." When I went to the support site, it indicated that I needed to download an update. I did that, but the install indicated that I was already updated and current. What can I do?

You are in the Final Cut Pro forum and find more focused help over in the FCExpress forum.
That said, usually these messages arise when you are installing an older, non-intel version of the software on an intel machine.
You can not update it, you need to purchase the upgrade to the current Universal Binary (aka intel ready) version of the software for it to run properly.
    Good luck,

  • FCE can't launch AGP Graphics Card?

I've been using FCE 4.x for years. The other day, I installed Soundtrack and all of a sudden my Final cut won't open or launch. I'm getting a "Configuration Error"
"This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing."
    "AGP graphics card."
I have done nothing in regards to my OS or hardware. All I have done is install Soundtrack the other day.
    Please help...

as a final note, this is what I had to do. I used the FCE remover application from a link in a previous post, then re-installed FCE version 4.0 from DVD disk. Then, I was getting errors about my existing FCE projects being newer than the application version. I realized that I had probably downloaded an update. So, I did Software update to version 4.01 (I think). It all works great now!
Thanks for your time and advice. I should have known that by installing Soundtrack which no longer comes with FCE 4, that it's an older application but I didn't think it would have anything to do with my version of FCE. Glad you pointed me right...

  • AGP graphic card

I install FCE HD 3.0 on my Mac Book Pro and when I attempt to open the program I receive a message telling me I do not have an AGP Graphics Card. Should this card already be installed?

FCE 3.0 is NOT suitable for the new Intel Macs like your MBP.
You can UPGRADE to FCE 3.5 for $99.
FCE 3.5 is specially designed for your computer and has more improved features.
If you want to use your old FCE 3.0 you will find that it works slower than it should and there may be other problems.
If you use the "esc" key you will need to do it everytime you open FCE.
For a permanent solution you can hack FCE 3.0 like this:-
    1. Right click on the FCE icon (in the Applications folder) and select "Show Package Contents".
    2. Open the "Contents" folder and double click the "info .plist". It should open automatically in TextEdit - if it doesn't, choose TextEdit manually.
    3. Around 15 or so lines down you will see AGP. Delete it and put in PCI.
    4. Close the window and when asked if you want to save the changes, say yes.

  • Best graphics card for Gigabit Ethernet?

    Hi,
I wanna upgrade my Power Mac G4's AGP graphics card to the best one available so I can get Quartz Extreme, Core Image, and Core Animation (for when I upgrade to Leopard). What's the best card available for my Power Mac?
    Thanks

I've got a GeForce FX5200 256Mb, which was considerably cheaper than the ATI Radeon 9800. The one I got was from eBay, and it's a flashed one (ie a PC card that has had the ROM converted to Mac). It works like a treat. Full Core Image and Quartz Extreme support, not sure about Core Animation.
Have a look here for compatibility issues: http://themacelite.wikidot.com/compatibility
Have a look on eBay for the best deals.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error Msg. "Configuration Error AGP Graphics Card"

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 17". I migrated my software from my old computer, but when I tried to open Final Cut Express HD, I got an error message saying Configuration Error "AGP Graphics Card." I reinstalled my original disk but got the same error message. When I went to the support site, it indicated for that error message that I needed to download an update. I did that, but the install indicated that I was already updated and current. What can I do?

Try hitting the esc key whenever you get the message.
You are probably using FCE 3.0 which was not designed to run on Intel Macs.

  • Error message..hardware missing...agp graphics card??

Just purchased a new iMac G5. I installed Final Cut v.4. Intallation was succesful, but when I try to run it, I get the error message Missing Hardware: AGP graphics card. Shouldn't the iMac have come with a graphics card? What's going on?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Try doing a search on the Final Cut PRO forum. There is a solution to fixing the installer for the old version of FCP to run on a new G5.

  • AGP graphics card + final cut pro HD 4.5

i have final cut pro hd 4.5 and just got a mac book pro. and when installing everything work but when i went to open FCP an error message came up saying AGP graphics card missing?
does anybody know what that means? or why that message comes up? is there anything i can do to fix it?
thank you for any of your help!

Maxplanar and David already told you what you need to do to rectify the situation.
That said, I'll answer some of your questions if you're still curious...
does anybody know what that means? or why that message comes up? is there anything i can do to fix it?
Yes, it means your computer doesn't have an AGP graphics card. The Macbook Pro has a PCI Express graphics card. There are PCI graphics cards, AGP graphics cards, and PCI Express graphics cards. The power and speed of the cards has progressed with the connection method (which is the distinction between the 3 I listed).
PCI cards plug into PCI slots. AGP cards plug into AGP slots. PCI Express cards plug into PCI Express slots.
When FCPHD 4.5 came out, PCI Express didn't exist. Therefore, it's looking at the graphics card universe as: is this a PCI card? or an AGP card? It needed an AGP card to run, so that test fails and FCP says "You need an AGP card to run me".

  • Final Cut Express HD & New I Mac CONFLICT - AGP graphics card error??

Not sure what to make of this. I would imagine this should be as seemless as all of the other transitions I have made with apple. I just bought a new I MAC running 10.5.2 and for some reason when I try to load Final Cut XPRESS HD 3.0, it loads just fine but when i try to launch, an error window pops up stating this software requires certain hardware or software which is missing. * AGP GRAPHICS CARD. And then proceeds to NOT launch the program.
Hmmm??? My graphics card is: ATI RADEON HD 2600 PRO. I had the first IMAC 20"(white body) and loaded the same program on that machine. It worked great.
    Thanks for any help.

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), I think FCE 3 isn't comaptible with IntelMacs. But you may want to ask in the FCE forum - this is the FCP forum.
