Ain't I using java -Xmx500m correctly?

On the command line, when I type java -version I get
java version "1.6.0_01"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_01-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0_01-b06, mixed mode, sharing)
when I type java -Xms32m -Xmx128m or java -Xms32m -Xmx500m I get
Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
(to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
(to execute a jar file)
and I understood the latter to be the way to increase heap space
in order to avoid heap OutOfMemoryError.
What is wrong, why cant the JVM take care of this automatically?
I have 2GB of memory in my PC.

.sh files, is that unix? I use XP. can't succeed with linux.
Ya, the -Xmx is there one level down in nonstandard options.
I looked into it a bit, and its kind of sad.
I keep all of my Java code for the classes in one directory.
JCreator retrieves all classes except library imports.
JCreator has a create jar file command,
but it wants to put everything in sight into it.
I would have to study how to make jar files easily.
I dont really want to use the successfully avoided project method.
It would be ideal for me to change the default heap space.
I find no place to do that in JCreator or anywhere.

  • How to use Java Robot to click the same button multiple times

    Hi All,
    I am trying to use Java Robot to turn a Windows utility located on the Desktop by clicking the same button on and then off with the following code:
      1.  Robot robot1 = new Robot();
      2.  robot1.mouseMove(400,180);
        // Turn on the utility
      3.  robot1.delay(100);
      4.  robot1.mousePress(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
      5.  robot1.delay(100);
      6.  robot1.mouseRelease(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
        //Wait for 2 minutes
      7.  robot1.delay(200);
        // Move the mouse to disconnect button
      8.  robot1.mouseMove(400,180);
        // Turn off the utility
      9.  robot1.mousePress(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
    10. robot.delay(100);
    11. robot.mouseRelease(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);However, only the first click (line 1 - 7) worked. Everything from step 8 onwards doesn't appear to be doing anything. Even instantiating another robot2 to carry out step 8 - 11 did not work either. Also have tried running steps 9 - 11 only. ie skip 8.
    My aim is to turn this tool on and off at regular interval.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jack

    Hi darth_code_r and Vincent,
    Both you and Vincent are right about insufficient time between the release ( 6 ) of mouse button and step ( 9 ) press the same button again to turn it off. You are also correct in saying that it was not necessary to move the mouse again ( 8 ) since it was sitting on the right button already.
    Below is the code I have ended up with which worked for me:
    1.  Robot robot1 = new Robot();
    2.  robot1.mouseMove(390,150);
    4.  robot1.mousePress(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
    6.  robot1.mouseRelease(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
         //Wait for 3 minutes
    7.  robot1.delay(30000);
    9.  robot1.mousePress(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
    11. robot1.mouseRelease(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);This utility also takes a few seconds to turn itself on and vice versa. As a result, it is necessary to give it sufficient time to turn on prior to turning it off again with the second mouse press.
    Thanks to both of you very much,
    Jack

  • Possible deadlocks with in-memory database using Java

    I've written a completely in-memory database using the Java API on BDB 4.6 and 4.7 for Windows and Linux (x86). The completely in-memory database means the database content and logs are entirely in-memory and the overflow pages will not be written to a disk file.
    The database environment and the database are configured to be transactional. All database access methods are specified to be auto-commit by setting the transaction argument to null. The environment is configured to be multi-threaded (which is the default when using the Java API).
    When run with a single-threaded client, the application works correctly on both Windows and Linux for BDB 4.6 and 4.7.
    When run with a multi-thread client that uses two thread for the database access, I run into a deadlock inside the call to the Database.delete method about half the time.
    I am assuming that in the "auto-commit" mode, a deadlock should not be possible.
    Any reported problems with using Java with in-memory database?
    Thanks.
    Hisur

    Hi Hisur,
    If you are using transactions and multiple threads, you will have to deal with deadlock. In this particular case, it's likely that a delete is causing two btree pages to be merged (called a "reverse split"). Auto-commit makes no difference in this case -- the application must retry the operation.

    You were right my XML file was not correct. I still couldn't find a valid JNLP validator. Sun has to provide that.>No they don't (have to supply a validator for their own document type, though it makes sense to do so), but yes they do (provide a tool that validates XML against schemas). Java can validate XML against a DTD or XSD.
    Check these two threads (and chase the links) for more details.

    I had a tool on my site based largely on Piotr's codes, that linked to a valid JNLP DTD and XSD, but unfortunately my site is offline at the moment. • LightweightDispatcher issue with Applets in Browser using Java 7, not 6

    Spent the last year at work setting up some GUI JApplets for demos our of code. The JApplets house a number of layers of JPanels and JComponents, but should have no heavyweight components as children. I've set up standalone applications that run one of the JApplets as a child of a JFrame, and those demos have no trouble. When I run the same demo but as a JApplet in a browser, I get errors. Please note that the demo is a JApplet but written like the demo that uses a JFrame, so the JApplet causing an issue is a child of the JApplet the browser knows about.
    The issue is seen when the user mouses-over the child JApplet. The listener of the component being moused-over is trying to send an event that the LightweightDispatcher is erroring trying to retarget. It does not seem to find the component that should be receiving the event. For reference, the JApplet implements the mouse-listener interface and is set as the mouse-listener for all its children recursively. Here is the error that is seen:
    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-2" java.lang.AssertionError

    and it repeats that for every mouse event that tries to fire within the child JApplet.
    Any thoughts on what this could be?
    I had a similar issue with key strokes not finding the focused JComponent within the child JApplet, but I made my own KeyboardEventManager to handle that issue. Unfortunately there are no paths like that to override for the mouse listeners, not to mention that there is no focused object for the events erroring.
    I do see that when I stop adding the mouse-listeners then the error does not appear, so I'm sure its related to that.
    I suppose the most important note here though is that the JApplets were built using Java 6, but the error is seen when running the JApplet with the 1.7 JRE. Also, the JApplet is opened using a JNLP. When the JNLP is set to run at 1.6+ the demo runs fine, when set to 1.7+, the error is seen.
    Please let me know if anyone has seen this or has a solution, or if I should report this as a bug to Oracle.

    This shouldn't be the case. You did make sure you are pointing the applet at the plug in correct? That means you are using an <object> tag as opposed to the <applet> tag in the HTML file?
    If not, run your HTML page through the HtmlConverter that comes with the plugin and try using the resulting HTML.

  • How to dynamically configure JPA setting at runtime using java code?

    Hi,
    I am new to EJB 3.0 and JPA. I am trying to help my company to deploy the use of JPA in EJB3.0. Currently, i am trying out with OpenJPA in IBM Webshpere Application Server 7.0. We have four different WAS servers running for testing, system integration testing, user testing and production respectively, and in each region, the configurations for data source, JDBC username and password, schema, etc are different. So i think i would need to configure the JPA setting during runtime using Java code that determines which is the environment. And apparently i am stuck with the limited knowledge i have.
    1) I understand that i could override the JDBC in the persistence xml by creating entity manager using entity manager factory. But is it possible that i do similar thing by using inejction of persistence context on entity manager to obtain a container managed entity manager?
    2) Alternatively, it is possible to create multiple persistence unit in the XML and inject different PU to the entity manager, am i right? But how to inject dynamically since @PersistenceContext(unitName="xxx") only accepts constant declaration.
    3) Is it possible that the JDBC username and password are read from properties file?
    Thanks for your help in advance!

    Hi
    Thanks for the reply.
    Are you saying that i have to configure the data source authentication to the backend DB2 using the JAAS-J2C? Correct me if i am mistaken. I guess i am unable to do so as the application server setup only contains one data source, and the server hosted a number of applications. Every applications has their own JDBC username and password supply to the data source (the ID supplied at the DB2 side will decide which resource can access) and thus, i have to supply the username and password at runtime. Talked to the server guy and seems that it is not feasible to have seperate datasource for each applications as considered to the volume of applications hosted inside the server.
    Any suggestion?

  • How to create a database using Java?

    Hi there..
    I'm a student who is currently studying IT and was asked to do a project based on database but create using Java.. since i'm a beginner..i was wondering whether is it possible to do that?
    and if it is possible.. can you kindly show me a sample of code on how to start the project...
    thank you
    yours sincerely,
    Shafini

    While duffymo is correct in regard to most major database products, it's my understanding (warning! wild-ass guess coming) that the Hypersonic DB is more "application-centric" and the dynamic creation of databases is part of its design. It's pure Java database software, and therefore is not appropriate for all database projects, in particular those that require extremely high-performance.
    See http://hsqldb.org/
    I've not used it yet (but soon though), and I can't really advise anyone about it.
    However, I'm wondering if you phrased you question in a way that is confusing us. To most of us in casual conversation, a "database" is both (1) a large organized collection of data and (2) the software that is used to organize and access it. However, the phrase "create a database" usually means creating a (1) database (a collection of data) using an already created (2) database software, such as Oracle, MySQL, DB2, HSQDB, etc., etc. If you'r question is, how do a create some new database software using Java, the answer is that this is a very very big and hard thing to do for the general case and probably not something you want to be doing.

    Also, How to configure MIME mapping for .jnlp files on J2EE server (I do not have another server) and if there is a need, how do i deploy the jar and the jnlp file on J2EE server?
    Kindly help.....

    Hi,
    I have the same problem, but I do have configured the webserver (Apache 2) correctly and the server is NOT returning a 404 error.
    To check this I used the a tcp monitor (Apache Axis).
    The error message in Java Webstart is identical to the one discribed above.
    In the tcp monitor I see the following :

    Any idea?

  • Should I use Java?

    Hi all, I have a little VB6 experience, but I dont really know much about coding. I want to design a desktop application, you can almost call it payroll software, not big, just something basic to manage a few workers. Can I use Java for this purpose? Can I create a easy user interface with Java? Can I create payslips which could be printed when needed? Please any advice would be appreciated, regards

    Java is a great language and it is easy to learn.
    However, a majority of the development process isnt learning the language, its learning the libraries/APIs.
    New libraries take a long time to learn. Nothing can change that.
    It will take you a long time to finish your project, weigh that realistically against your other options. Hey, good to see you again.
    I have to disagree with you on one thing:
    New libraries take a long time to learn. Nothing can change that. Not really, The documentation provided with the libraries is quite good. The problem is that when you need something from the API's its a challenge to find the correct one and where to start with regard to using it, but once you have overcome that stumbling block it simply takes common sense, patience and practice. But yes it does take longer and is generally the hardest part of learning java for one.
    @OP, if you are one of the quick learners and really push yourself.
    You can cover the basics in a few weeks(1-3) and attack Gui's after that.
    At that rate you will be stuck into your application after around i and a half months.
    Other wise you sould double that time period - but that could still be to quick for most people.
    Fastest I've seen is 3 weeks between Java SE, EE and ME with an average of 96% in his exams, mind you he learned VBA in a week (1600 page text book) and got 87% for that.
