Airport Express fails to configure with Utility 5.5.1

Hi there, I hope somebody can help me with this problem
I have an Airport Express which was previously working fine.
It was used to extend the range of another network, with a non-Apple router/modem.
It stopped working one day and I didn't pay much attention to it as I only used it for streaming iTunes anyway.
Now I have moved and am once again trying to get it to connect to an existing wireless network and failing.
I open Utility and it scans and detects my Airport Express which I have done a factory reset on.
I click on the AE and go through the setup steps and get as far as Join A Wireless Network.
Regardless of whether I then choose "Join My Wireless Network" or "Extend the range of my AEx or AE network" things fall down at the next step.
I find the network I wish to join, put in the WPA password and click restart.
At this point Utility tells me that my settings have been successfully updated and I should either close the window or wait for AE to restart.
Alas it never restarts.
The light continues to flash orange and Utility eventually acknowledges failure.
Any ideas as to how I overcome this?
Incidentally in Utility I can setup a new network on the AE without problem, alas I don't have access to the ethernet cable to do this as I am piggy-backing on to a network in a shared housing scheme.

When I logged in to the router it told me that security was WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK).
Is there perhaps a setting for WPA/WPA2 Personal (TKIP)? That would correspond to Apple's WPA/WPA2 Personal.
+The main Belkin routher is 2 houses away.+
+Is there any way to use the Airport Express to extend the range of the network or improve the signal strength inside my house?+
Unfortunately, Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature is not compatible with other manufacturer's devices. All you can do is try to position the AirPort Express as close as possible the Belkin router and avoid as many obstructions as possible.

  • Airport Express fails to work with Win Vista

    Ive got a 802.11 n airport express.
My girlfriend's laptop with windows vista becomes disconnected with internet every hour. However, It shows in the tool bar that the laptop is connecting to the internet, while the MSN messenger and IE browser fail to connect to internet. She has to disconnect from internet and reconnect. Then it works for a while, then fail again.
Meanwhile, my macbook pro, which is also linked the airport express, works properly. It never failed to connect to the internet.
Can anyone plz tell what is goin' on? How can I solve the problem?

when was the last time the express worked fine?
ok, so hardwired into the 6121, that computer works fine, right? try these exact steps esp the reset
unplug modem and leave off for 5 minutes, while you're waiting plug a eth cord from modem to the WAN (circle icon) port of the express
keep express unplugged and hold in reset button and don't let go
plug power back into express and only release reset when amber light flashes after 10-20s
give it a minute, hopefully you'll now see a green light on the express
fire up airport utility and proceed to 'create a new network' - you may see your device under 'other wifi devices' in the utility or you'll have to manually connect to it by clicking on the wifi icon in the OSX title bar and selecting the reset name of your express (something like express 342sdaf32)

  • Can't read airport express base station configuration wirelessly

    The setup:
2TB time capsule that takes the ethernet feed from the cable modem for internet access.
Airport express 802.11g plugged into speakers for Airtunes. No ethernet connection, just a wireless network.
    The problem:
I can only read the airport express base station configuration when the mac is plugged into the time capsule by ethernet cable. This does not happen with the other mac I have on the network. It can connect to both the time capsule and the airport express without any problems. So unless I'm plugged in, iTunes and airtunes doesn't connect to the base station, and neither can Airfoil 3.5 or Airport Utility. Airport Utility does see the airport express. It just doesn't read the configuration wirelessly.
I think this had something to do with elgato eyetv not liking airfoil, but I can't say for sure.
    Any thoughts?

When I switch it on all three lights flash, but then after a while the middle one stays on and nothing happens.
You posted in the AirPort Express area, but it sounds like you have an AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)--correct?
If so, let's start by performing a complete power recycling of your network components to make sure that the BT Voyager router "recognizes" the AEBS.
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    - Power-off the BT Voyager modem, AEBS, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the BT Voyager modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
    - Power-off the BT Voyager modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the BT Voyager modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)

  • AirPort Express doesn't work with SB5100

I'm helping a friend set up a new AirPort Express  MC414LL/A Model A1392 (802.11n) with her existing Motorola SB5100 DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem. I was able to setup the AirPort Express from her iPad with a network name and password. Also upgraded the firmware in the AirPort Express. However, the Airport Utility App on my iPad and iPhone connected to the AiPort Express, but showed no connection to the Internet. Furthermore, the PC that had been working fine when connected directly to the SB5100 could not make an Internet connection when connected to the AirPort Express.
I brought the AirPort Express home and connected it to my Verizon FiOS Actiontec modem and it works fine - my iPhone and iPad connect to it and through it to the Internet.
I'm wondering if the SB5100 is incompatible with the AirPort Express??

    It should work.
Power down the modem and leave it powered down for a long time, as much as a half hour or longer is sometimes required. While it is powered down, disconnect its coaxial cable. Literally unscrew it and leave it that way.
Connect the Express to your modem, leave them connected, and do not disconnect them from one another without powering down the modem again.
Re-connect everything including power and let the devices complete their startup sequences. This usually takes a moment or two.
If that does not result in success, "hard reset" the Extreme or Express according to the instructions below and start over from the beginning.
If you still have trouble, contact AppleCare because you have done everything reasonable to get it to work.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Airport Express (square) skips unbearably with Airplay

Against my better judgement (from years of experience with Apple) I ordered a first generation new Airport Extreme to replace my old 802.11g Airport Express. Right out of the box and configured it fails to work as an Airplay destination. Sadly, this is the only thing I need it to do. It skips every 2 seconds or so for a second. It's really pretty funny, and pathetic too.
So, I guess I was just wondering if anyone ahs one of these square ones working with Airplay without stuttering? I put the old 802.11g one back in the network and boxed up the new one and life is good again. Trying to decide if I should return it or just wait for a firmware update in a few months. Any advice?
    My network looks like this:
Time Capsule (single band 802.11n (b/g compatible)) with an 802.11n compatible Airport Extreme (2011) and also an Airport Extreme 802.11g (2008). The Airport Extremes are both set to join the network (not extend it) and used only for Airplay.
    Thanks!

FWIW. My current network configuration is a 4th gen TC that is being extended by a 4th gen AirPort Extreme. I also have a 1st & 2nd gen 802.11n AirPort Express base stations configured to join the extended network solely for the purpose of AirPlay. In my case I do not experience any stuttering with either or both Express base stations streaming.
My main wireless network is configured to use the "802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g/n" Radio Mode with WPA2 Personal as the wireless encryption type. Following this AirPort User Tip, I get a consistent 30+ dB SNR measurements at the locations of the Extreme and both Express base stations.
I only have a single non-"n" wireless client that I use occasionally and my portable phones are DECT-6 models so there is little or no additional Wi-Fi interference in the area to adversely affect the TC's Wi-Fi network.
The key to streaming is high and consistent bandwidth availability.

  • Hi, The Airport Express does not work with iOS 7.0.4, I appreciate your help to resolve this event. Thank you,

Hi, The Airport Express does not work with iOS 7.0.4, I appreciate your help to resolve this event. Thank you,

Please locate the model number of the AirPort Express and post back that information.
The model number is located on the side of the AirPort Express. It begins with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We are not sure what you mean by "does not work".  Does this mean that the AirPort Express worked at one time and has just recently stopped working?
Have you installed a newer operating system on your iOS device recently?
Or, is this a new AirPort Express that you are trying to configure for the first time?
If yes, what service will the AirPort Express perform on your network?
Please remember that we cannot see your network, so we only know as much about your problem as you can tell us.

  • Airport express slow after configuration, why?

OS X 10.4.2, dual 867 g4 (Sonnet pci 802.11 g) and imac flat screen 10.4 (airport card) and airport express: When I logged in through the airport express on first usage (with generic apple xxxxxx network name), the road runner speed test was showing a connection speed of about 1.5Mbps on both computers. After I configure the express (it came with the 6.2 basestation firmware installed) for our network names, security, etc. the road runner speed test shows the connection speed slowing to 90-100kbps.
Any thoughts about why this is happening, or how to rectify situation? Obviously the hardware is ok, but the software after configuration reduces through put drastically.
    Thanks,
    Teg

Thanks for your reply. I installed the 6.1.1 firmware, but the same problem continues. When using the road runner connection speed test, the connection will frequently start out at a decent rate (1.5 Mbps) but fall off rapidly, in 2-3 seconds, down to a poor connection rate of 90-100 kbps. When I connect to the cable modem by ethernet cable the connect speed is in the 3-4 Mbps range consistently. My wireless connection appears consistently to be all four black bars in the menu bar.
I tried down grading the airport version from 4.2, but the system would not allow that.
Is this problem in the Airport Express, the airport 4.2 software, the os 10.4.2, or what? Any guesses?

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

I just bought an AirPort express. Currently I have a qwest wired router plugged into the back of my computer via an ethernet cable. Can I just unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into the AirPort express, then use the setup utility? Most of the discussions involve an existing wireless network. I don't have one.

Correct. That's the way to set up the AirPort Express. After connecting your AirPort Express to the router, open AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps

  • Airport Express B/G : problems with manual IP configuration?

I don't know when it started, but I think it has something to do with one of te latest systemupdates or airport firmware updates.
    Configuration :
    - Airport Express N : only N, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.7), roaming with Extreme N
    - Airport Extreme N : only N, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.35), roaming with Express N
    - Airport Express B/G (older one) : B/G compatible, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.8), no roaming, just stand alone.
All the airports are wired connected to a 10/100 switch.
No internet configuration on these airports, I'm using a separated router, also connected to the switch.
Problem : The airport Express B/G dissapears from the network : from time to time not visible in the airport utility program, from time to time not visible in iTunes (airtunes). In spite of these problems, he is always visible in the airport network menu. An IP ping works just fine.
When I change the IP configuration of the Airport Extreme B/G from manual to DHCP, there is NO problem anymore.
No problems with the Airport Express N an Airport Extreme N.
Are there other users with the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.

question: i below what should i do ?
    1) put a cable from my cablemodem to the airport extreme bs;
    2) put a cable the airport extreme bs to the airport express bs.
Yes on both. Your network configuration would look something like the following:
    Modem > (Ethernet) > \[WAN port] AEBSn \[LAN port] > (Ethernet) > AX
do i have to reset the modems and are there any setting i should be aware of ?
Yes, it's always a good idea to both reset both base stations and, after doing so and before configuring them, perform a complete power recycle of your network equipment.
    So in this case ...
o Power-down the modem, AEBSn, AX, & computers. (Order is not critical.)
o Reset both the AEBSn & AX. (Again, order is not critical.)
o Power-down each base station after performing a successful reset.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 10 minutes.
o Plug-in the AX; wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-up your computer(s).
o Use the AirPort Utility to reconfigure both base stations as required.

  • Older model Airport Express won't work with Mountain Lion Airport Utility

just upgraded to Mountain Lion and noticed that of my network of three airport expresses connected to various stereo speaker systems throughout the house, one of the older models won't work with the supplied version of Airport Utility (v 6.1). Here is the message it gives in the utility when I attempt to select this particular Airport Express:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
Well, I go to download v 5.6 and none of the versions available will install on Mountain Lion! (even the version for Lion) Catch 22.
Any resolution to this (other than having to go out and buy a newer version Airport Express)?

I'm traveling with just an Airport Express 802.11g model and my iPad mini. I want to change the settings on the Airport Express but the Airport Utility for iOS says this base station isn't supported. Do I have any options available to me to change the settings on the road without a computer?

Yeah, that's what I gathered. Question is, do I have any alternate means of configuring it? For example, a web interface.

  • How to extend range of my wireless network with an Airport Express connected by ethernet with Airport Utility 6.0

    Hi everyone,
I have AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Gen) firmware 7.6.1, that is connected to my main wifi base station (a TimeCapsule) by ethernet. I would like to extend the range of the Wifi Network but am not clear on how to do so using the new interface of Airport Utlity 6.0.
Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?
    BR
    AK

    Hi Everyone!
Many thanks for the tips. I have downloaded 5.6 and have set my Airport Express in the "Extend a wireless network" mode. I was still having a few problems with the quality of the wifi connection in different parts of my apartment (by no means a very large one, but walls seem to be made of extra dense concrete here in Singapore) and went out and bought a few powerline adapters by TP Link (http://www.tp-link.sg/products/details/?categoryid=1862&model=TL-PA211#spec).
If you don't mind a slightly long post, I would be very grateful for any tips:
My setup is now as follows:
    Main room
Time Capsule - connected to a Cisco DPC3925 Modem (http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/modem_DPC3925.html) both connected to a TP Link adapter 1.
iMac - connected via Ethernet to TP Link adapter 2 and wifi enabled
Airport Express 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1) used to stream audio to a stereo that doesn't have an optical cable input. Since it is an Ethernet connection, I have wifi turned off.
Apple TV 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1)
    Bedroom A
Airport Express 2 - connected via ethernet to TP Link adapter 3
    Bedroom B -
Apple TV 2 - connected by Ethernet to a TP Link adapter 4
After following the tips on setting up the extended wifi network, I find that when I use a wireless client (e.g. iPad, Macbook air, etc) in either Bedroom B or Bedroom C (both don't have wifi in the room) the connection is very poor. Even more odd is that the connection in Bedroom A, one that does have Airport Express 2. To be clear when I mean very poor, I mean Skype/facetime skips frames and freezes... this doesn't happen when I am in the main living area.
I would be very grateful for tips on how to set up the most robust network given the configuration above. Specifically, I am wondering about:
When I select Extend a wireless network option on Airport Utility 5.6 the summary page states that it is connecting using "Wireless Network" vs what I would expect it to say "Ethernet connection".
Is there any advice on whether to enable 5Ghz network and if so, should I try to use that for the various wifi clients?
Does anyone know if I can somehow use Apple products to extend the reach of the Cisco DPC3925? Frustratingly the signal is quite strong (compared to Apple routers), but I cannot properly stream audio/video if that wifi network is used (as my iMac that hosts the content is on the Apple one... and I'd have to walk over to switch it to the Cisco one).
Any other tips would be much appreciated!
    Cheers!
    AK
