Airport Express vs. Airport Extreme... which would work best for me?

Okay, I've owned a few Apple products over the years, but have recently replaced my laptop with a Macbook Pro.  So, everything in our house that uses a wireless connection is made by Apple.  The only reason I say that is because my wireless router is a few years old, and I seem to be having some issues with it.  So, I am probably going to replace it.  I also mentioned the all-apple status because it seems to be logical that I would buy an Apple router to go along with all of this.  If that's a bad assumption, please let me know.
Here is what accesses our network each day.  One Macbook Pro, an iMac, two iPads, 3 iPhones, an Apple TV (about to buy another one for upstairs), and a wireless printer.  I occasionally use my XBox to play online, but not heavily.  We also work with teenagers at our church, and often have a group of them over at our house....and they all use the network with their phones.  I don't want to just buy the more expensive router so that they can use wifi... I just mentioned it to see if that would bring out any key differences in the two.  Does one support more users than the other?
Which one would you guys suggest?  I obviously like the price tag of the Express, but do not want to be disappointed...  Thanks!

Compare the products here:

If the primary use of the AirPort will be to provide a wireless connection to devices, then it would probably be OK.
But, you cannot connect a USB hard drive to the AirPort Express, and it does not have the better wireless antennas that are present in the AirPort Extreme.
If you need to connect Ethernet devices to the AirPort, the AirPort Extreme uses Gigabit Ethernet ports.....10 times faster than the ports on the Express. No contest there.
The AirPort Extreme will also provide a much faster 802.11ac wireless signal, but you will need to have an 802.11ac device like the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or iMac to realize the benefit. Other wireless devices will connect at the speeds at which they are capable.
Either the Express or the Extreme will support up to 50 wireless connections.
For me, the Extreme is a "no brainer" in terms of performance and future compatibility with newer wireless devices coming down the pike.....but if you don't need to connect a hard drive to the AirPort, you may disagree.

  • Which imac would work best for Graphic Design?

I am a Graphic Designer, currently using Creative Suite 2 (soon to be upgraded to CS3) and I need a new Mac for home. A Powermac takes up too much space, so I'm thinking about an imac with a 24" monitor and I have a few questions for the experts:)
Which imac would work best for graphics?
Is the monitor acurate for Pantone color matching?
Is the 24"monitor on the imac clear and bright?
    Is Leopard a stable OS?
I also need an (inexpensive) color laser printer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks a bunch!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The 24" iMac uses a superior LCD panel to the 20" model and so is certainly better suited to your purposes. I don't know how badly having a piece of glass in front of the display would affect you as a designer though.
The display certainly is clear and bright. I use it on it's lowest brightness setting.
Leopard is stable but it's worth checking that drivers for any devices that you currently rely on are available. For example I have to go back to my 10.4.11 iMac G4 to use my scanner. Personally I can't get iCal to alarm in Leopard but that's a fairly minor gripe.
As this is the forum for much older iMacs I'd suggest re-posting in the Intel iMac forum and even Mac OS 10.5 Printing forums for better informed opinion:

  • Which headset work best for iPad Air

Which headset work best for iPad Air

This can be highly subjective. I would pick a few models that you think you'd like, then read the reviews at the Apple Store link that Diavonex directed you to. Also read the reviews on Amazon.com as well to get a feel for a few models and what kind of sound they can produce.
Back to the "subjective" aspect I mentioned...when the Apple Ear Pods were released (they now come standard with all new iPhones), I had an iPhone 4 at the time and had the older headphones (the new Ear Pods were introduced/released with the iPhone 5). I heard great things about them and almost purchased a set when they went on sale as a stand-alone item but I decided not to. When I upgraded my phone to an iPhone 5, I got them included with the new phone. Great, I thought...well, after trying them, I hated them and I still do. They produce way too much bass for my personal taste and sound boomy. I much prefer the older model. It's just personal preference.
Read the reviews and see if they describe how the headphones sound...boomy, tinny, clear, muddy, etc and try to match that to what your preference may be.

  • What amplifier would work best for Airport Express?

I have built in a ceiling speakers in all my rooms and all the rooms have their own apple macmini or laptop
All wiring of the speakers come to a central media room, and in this, I want to place 8 airport express to allow each room to be able to play through itunes onto their ceiling speaker. Effectively we could also put all speakers on from one room and create a party mode
The problem is that airport express requires powered speakers and these ceiling speakers are not powered of course. This means I would need to put an amplifier between the airport express and the speaker (I think)
Just wondering if anyone has successfully done this?
I have had a look at multi zone amplifier like
    http://www.htd.com/whole-house-audio/mid-level-whole-house-audio/MCA-66-Audio-Co ntroller-Amplifier
Most multi zone amplifiers have their own keypad, but with apple you do not require this as you can control it straight from your mac! So what I want to do is control the INPUT level on the amplifier, and fix the output level on the amplifier, if I am thinking right..... as I thought this would work best ...
then if you put the volume control on the mac to MAX the amplifier would already be preset to max and the ceiling speakers would rock
    Any suggestions or .....
    Thanks

In this Macworld article, they just use multiple Parasound Zamps, which are single zone amps that turn on and off by themselves, depending on when sound is passing through. I'm planning on doing this with my new construction because it looks like a simple setup with no remotes needed save the iPhone, which I always have on me.

Stupid question.  How do you select -- in a Mac -- from which media to boot from?  How would you get into BIOS?
    Hey,
if i'm not mistaken you press the left alt key , right next to the cmd key.
I don't know how to get into the bios and i do not believe you can select an os to boot by default other than windows and mac os x, after you install grub it should be defaulted by efibootmgr but if you tell mac os x you'd rather boot from it you'll have to re bless grub :
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … g_blessing
if all this crap is too much for you, you can always go for refind which is really easy to install and remove. just google refind and install it in mac os x, uninstalling it is as easy as deleting it from the /EFI folder on the mac os x partition if i'm not mistaken.

  • What router would work best for my app?

    Hi,
I have been looking at two Cisco routers for my home/work network. They are the 1811 and the 871 series.
My network consists of 1 2K3 SBS (It dose my DHCP, Domain Controller, Wins, and active directory.), 2 Cad stations, 1 Email/web PC, 1 Notebook, and I will have 3 people VPN'ing in at any point in time for files.
Also, my broadband connection is cable (8m/768k) as of right now and will soon see FiOS in my area and I am looking at possibly getting the 15m/2m tier or the 30m/5m tier if the price is right. So will aether of these routers handle this wan connection speed?

The 871 peaks at about 12mbps vs. 35mbps for the 1811.
Check out this document to compare all models.
Hope this helps. Please rate this post.

  • 16:9 or 4:3    Which Format Works Best, for most hardware?

    Hi There,
I am having a problem with knowing what format to burn a DVD in within iDVD..
I burned a DVD slide show made with iPhoto, and when I put it to DVD, and I play it back on my external player all the people in the video seem to be wider than they should be.
It's a regular DVD player, not HD or Blu-Ray..
I was wondering what the best format is for just a regular DVD player/playback output, so everyone looks like they should. (Not stretched, or squished)
What's the rule of thumb for the best compatibility across the board for producing DVDs that look their best across different DVD players?
Thanks for any help, and Happy New Year,
    Eric

4:3 aspect ratio normally is a fairly safe bet. However standard television sets are quickly being replaced with wide screens at a record number.
The problem in 16:9 is that the WS flag that tells your standard Dvd player to go wide screen isn't always picked up by the device. And that's when we run into issues.
But to answer your question fully you really need to understand not only aspect ratios but also resolutions. This link usually helps answer a few concerns in regards to Preparing images for iDVD slideshows:

Hope the above helps but if not just come on back.

  • *Pls Help* Which macbook is best for me; 13" or 15"?

I have always been anti Apple but after my first iphone (4s) I have decided to get an Iphone 6 and a MacBook Pro. I am an accountancy student, I understand I would have to buy the sage and Microsoft softwares separately for it but apart from doing my accountancy work on it, I would like to use my spare time to make videos to post on YouTube, make DJ mixes using Traktor, make beats on it using Fruity Loops, record songs and manage some online business such as eBay - these that I have just listed are my main priorities on the macbook. I would of course watch videos and play games on it too but not so much. So mainly for education and media purposes for a starter which would be best for myself? The 13" retina or the 15" retina? My friend is a professional DJ and advised me that he does all his DJing on his 13" macbook, he thinks the 15" isnt necessary and is a waste of money. Can someone please help me in making this decision?
    Many Thanks!!
    Sujon Miah

It depends on what you really want.  Personally I have the 13 inch. But the nice thing about the 15 inch is it has two speakers. If the size really doesn't matter then I would say go with the 13 inch because its more cost effective

  • Confused about which would be best. Is there a site I can quickly compare airport express, airport extreme and time capsule?

I'm confussed about which would suit me better and was looking for a comparison chart to quickly see the differences of each. Is there a site I can quickly compare the Airport Express, the Airport Extreme and the Time Capsule? The Time Capsual is a little more obvious seeing as it lets one back up one's hard drive, but I'd still like to see it's other features in comparison.

There is. Look at the AirPort Express page....Mac > Accessories > AirPort Express.... or look here:

  • AirPort Express versus AirPort Extreme - which is right for me?

I am trying to figure out what the right product is for me to set up my apartment for Wireless. I have a new MacBook Pro, and my boyfriend has an older MacBook. Our Internet service is of a moderate speed - up to 10 Mbps.
My question is whether I will see any difference in speed for Internet access and downloads with the AirPort Extreme, or if I will have basically the same experience with the Express? Also, someone told me that since there will be an older (approximately 2.5 yo) computer connected to the Express, it will default to that speed if I have the Express. I want to connect at the best speed possible, but also don't have the money to waste if the Extreme won't make a huge difference.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions!
The AirPort Express will create a single wireless network that will handle up to 10 connections, to that would work fine for your purpose. Since you have a newer "n" speed computer and an older "g" speed computer there (when you say 2.5 yrs+ I am guessing that it is a "g" device..you might want to confirm), the default radio mode that the Express creates would allow both computers to connect. If you are connected, you will be at the faster "n" speed. If the "g" device connects, the wireless network will drop down to "g" levels as long as that device is active.
The AirPort Extreme will create two separate wireless networks, plus it includes 3 ethernet ports if you wanted to connect devices to it directly with an ethernet cable, which is a much faster connection that wireless. The advantage of a dual network arrangement would be that you could connect at a faster "n" speed on the "main" network, while the other computer would connect to the "guest" network at "g" speeds and the "g" connection would not affect your "n" connection.
If you are going to use your wireless for normal internet browsing, etc. the Express would probably suffice. If you do a lot of downloading, have big email attachments, etc., then the faster "n" speed will make a difference for you. The "g" computer will perform the same with either the Express or the Extreme.

  • I use my ps3 online gaming, is the airport extreme or the airport express be compatible with ps3? Is it going to be a better connection compair to other router? Which one is a better choice for me, airport express or airport extreme??

I bought linksys EA3500 router. Its still in the box and before I open it I want to learn more about the apple airport router, is the apple going to work with my online games with ps3? I have iPad, 2 iPhones, apple tv and Mac mini.  If the airport express or airport extreme is a lot better and will work for ps3 which one should I get?

Airport will work with PS3.  From what you've stated, the Extreme is more than you need.  Buy the Express.

  • I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

Since you have the new Time Capsule, then you will need a new AirPort Extreme to match the performance capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If best quality is preferred, you will need to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection between the devices. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it is needed...and there will be no loss of signal through the Ethernet cable.
A wireless connection will result in a significant drop in performance, but it might be OK for your uses, if you want to try it that way first to see if the performance is acceptable.
It is really important that the AirPort Extreme be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
A line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be the goal, with the AirPort Extreme located about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage.

  • Airport Express or Airport Extreme Base for home wireless

I've read some of the comparisons between the Airport Express and Airport Extreme Base station to make an informed choice before purchasing. The Airport Express probably will suffice for my needs, plus having AirTunes is a bonus. Mobility is not such a concern (most hotels now offer wireless in any case, making the Express less appealing than when it first came out).
But my only concern with Airport Exress is durability and quality. Some postings on the Apple site note that these can go bad after a year or so. I realize that only those having problems are posting but wondered if there might be some issues with the Express that would make the Extreme Base station a better decision, especially since it's only $30 more now.
    Thanks in advance.

Actually it really boils down to your needs.
Either one will work and work well, but if air tunes, and portability is important Express is the way to go. The Extreme is a very good choice as well.
I suggest you look over both of these links and decide the features you need.

  • Is it neccessary to buy an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme for my macbook pro to connect WI FI or wireless?

so I have a macbook pro, but i don't know whether i need to buy an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme to connect to WI FI or wireless.   or i only need to modem??
    HELP!!! :'(

Airport Extreme is used by Apple for its wireless routers and the hardware inside your MacBook Pro that is used to connect to a wired or wireless router. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPort_Extreme#AirPort_Extreme_Base_Station
While Apple would like you to buy everything from them you can use any brand that will work with Macs. My setup is a Qwest DSL modem connected to a NetGear wireless router. The Airport Extreme card inside my MacBook recognizes them without any problems
