All Quicktime videos are now not displaying video
Up until yesterday, all of my quicktime files and movies that i could view in itunes, including trailers in the intunes store were working fine. Now for some reason, the audio in any of the above mentioned files works, but the video is now random fuzzy images of what appears to be my start menu on my windows xp operating system. i have reinstalled the most recent version of quicktime, and i have run a virus scan and have turned up nothing. this occurs for any file that requires quicktime. again, the video appears to be fuzzy images of my start menu. the images are almost like looking at a tv thats trying to play an atari that has not had the dust blown out of the game cartridge. i know thats a crazy way to describe it but thats exactly what it looks like. I have a lot of movies on my itunes library, and not one of them works. please help!

Did the nVidia graphics card come "built in" with the Vaio, or was it something you added on later yourself?
If it came built in, I'd head to the Sony website and check the driver download pages for your Vaio model to see if there's any driver updates available for the card. (I'd go to Sony because they may have tweaked the basic nVidia drivers so that they work a bit better with the other hardware they're using in your Vaio.)
(Actually, while you're at your download pages, that would be a good time to stock up on any other updates available for your particular configuration of your Vaio model. Things like chipset drivers can have some impact on things like video performance.)
If the card is something you added on yourself later on, I'd instead head straight to nVidia's website to check to see if there's any updated drivers for the card.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I cut and pasted a description from the Internet. It posted as a link in iPhoto. It seems to have made a global change--all my descriptions are now blue, underlined, and Times Roman 12 rather than Arial white. How can I get this back to the default?

I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.

New user- all my files are now read only -
I am using a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with Windows XP and my husband has a Dell Dimesion 4600 desktop. Two weeks ago I installed a Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB adapter on his computer and then installed a WRT54G v.6 wireless router. All is working fine for internet connection. Today I discovered all my files are now read only and even when I uncheck the read only box and click apply, then close the file, on re-opening it it is again read only. Even the files on my external hard drive are now read only.
I am backtracking to see where a change was made that was unintended and the wireless router was the last thing I installed. Is there a connection? And if so, can someone help me make the necessary changes or tell me where to find out?
I read through a lot of messages but did not immediately see this situation addressed.
Sandraseems to be an OS issue , because there is nothing on the router setting that could change the configuration on the computer....try System Restore....can't think of anything else at this point...

Ive restored my Ipod nano and the songs that I've already purchased are now not syncing to my device. How do I get those songs back on the nano?

All of a sudden this week I am losing my old sessions. As I usually have about 20 tabs open in 4 separate windows, this is VERY annoying. VERY.
Also, quicktime links are no longer working, like at apple.com/trailers. I get an "Error: 47 Invalid Url: ()" message when trying to use them.
My only recent computer changes were updating Flash, and also on June 15th I got a bunch of updates from Windows Updates. Mostly security updates, and a .NET Framework update.
My feeling is this has something to do with the windows updates?

I was able to duplicate this issue on my Windows 7 laptop as follows:
1) Completely uninstall FlashPlayer (using your tool) as well as Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Maintenance Service (used Windows 7 - uninstall from Control Panel). Please note that I checked the box that said "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" to ensure that Firefox was completely gone from my laptop.
2) I then went out to the Firefox website and downloaded the "Firefox Setup 13.0.1.exe" app to my laptop. I ran this app to install Firefox.
3) I then went to the following website http://www.ishmael.org.uk/karaoke02.php as I know that this URL uses Flash Player (obviously you can go to any URL that uses Flash Player - I'm just letting you know which one I used). I then clicked on the icon on this page to install Flash Player.
Once the install was completed, the URL stops responding and appears to be locked up (although it will occassionally hiccup and display portions of the page and then lock up again). You will eventually get a pop-up notice from Firefox that has the header "Warning: Unresponsive script" and says the following:
A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to to see of the script will complete. Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:6551
Selecting "Stop script" will get Firefox working until you hit another page that uses Flash Player.
To ensure that the above URL is not the culprit, I used one from your website http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html and had the same results.

I receive a regular newsletter from the manufacturer of a railsim. I have allowed remote content for this email address only in the security section of the options window in Thunderbird. However, the remote content (images) are still not appearing - only those little box thingies which, if I click on them, take me to various pages on the manufacturer's website. I want this facility but it's a real drag independently clicking each box to see if it is something I wish to add to my railsim.
So, having set Thunderbird to accept remote content from only this email address (all others are blocked), why is it not displaying the content?What exactly have you got in this location.

ESS EHP4 - Quicklinks are gone / not displaying anymore :-(

Yesterday, due to some inconsistencies, I was forced to rebuild a part of our portal content. This should be quite irrelevant for this issue but take this info just for integrity... For Areas I definitely did not even touch yesterday, the Quicklinks for the assigned Services are not showing in the Overview page anymore. The checkmarks for "show quicklink" in the Services were and still are set, so I don't get what causes this. I cleared all caches known to me, i.e. Navigation caches, runtime cache and DB cache. The portal was also restarted. Since, additionally, the issue persists on both DEV and QAS I don't really believe in some kind of caching issue.
Has anyone ever experienced something alike? I need to resolve this today

I was forced to do so since the alterations I mad in the customizing had to be transported into PROD asap and the quicklink-issue was just some "cosmetic" which were somehow caused at that time. Yet, I haven't found out why some of the quicklinks are not displaying since I thought, the ONLY dependency is the checkbox "show quicklink" in the Service entries in HPF, which I didn't touch. But apparently I was wrong about this.
I did verify the Roles, everything looks allright.
Any other guess?

Kernel 2.6.20 - device naming - all hdx devices are now sdx/srx?
I just upgraded my Arch system (Voodoo 0.8), including the kernel to kernel26 (2.6.20.1-1) from 2.6.17.
I'm noticing now that all devices that used to be hdx devices (hda, hdb etc) are now either sdx or srx.
Here's the contents of /sys/block, first for the old 2.6.17 kernel, and then with the new 2.6.20 kernel. I removed
ramx and loopx devices from the output below for brevity and clarity.

sda, sdb,sdc are correct - they are USB devices and shoud be sdx
Edit: correction: sda is a SATA hard drive (not USB)
However hda became sr0, and hdb became sr1 (these are ATAPI CD/DVD burners)
On another system, an IDE hard drive (normally hda) became sda.
Since this data is taken right from /sys/block, the device naming is coming directly from the kernel and is not related to udev etc. Is everyone seeing this with 2.6.20? In other words, is this normal for the newer kernels, or is there something in the Arch config that causes this.
All installed packages are up to date as of today (standard Voodoo 0.8 system )

I guess I skipped over the kernel where this change kicked in (2.6.19) so it took me by surprise.
At least I know it's not just me having one of those days. I'm working on s special purpose live-cd (and using a modified Arch kernel on it), where the naming changes will confuse some people (not to mention me). Guess i'll have to read up on this and see what I can work out...

Lost all bookmarks & hyperlinks are now black! (Mac)
While using firefox my browser froze as i ran out of memory. I tried to close some windows while the browser was paused, however it was frozen so i had to force quit. When i re opened firefox all my bookmarks were gone, both in the toolbar and bookmark folder. I tried to restore however it gives the error message "Unable To Process The Backup File". I have tried following the support pages with no luck.
I have also tried to downgrade from 15.0.1 to 14.0.1 but this made no difference.
Also, i have noticed when i was using google to search for help all hyperlinks are now showing as black instead of blue! This is happening with multiple web pages.
Is there any way to manually restore the bookmark folder or is this impossible? I can't figure out how to fix this.
Current version of OSX i am running is 10.5.8
Current version of Firefox is 14.0.1

Decided to risk using the 'reset firefox' button (Help > Troubleshooting Information > Reset Firefox) which worked a treat. As soon as i pressed it, everything was restored! I am surprised i did not find this referred to in any help docs.

Why are images not displaying at correct resolution in emails?
I've just upgraded to Windows 7 (64bit).
Thunderbird is not displaying images at the correct resolution: images that I insert into the body of an email and images used in my signature.
The images appear larger than they should and pixelated.
It seems that images are not displaying at the correct resolution inside my emails, whereas in other programs on my machine images are displaying correctly.
When I insert and image into an email using insert>image, the resulting "Image Properties" window displays the image's dimensions correctly. This confirms my suspicion that the resolution is not displaying correctly inside emails (a lower resolution than elsewhere on my screen, which would explain why the images appear bigger and pixelated).
I'd appreciate any help in fixing this problem.

I've discovered what is causing the problem, but I still need a way to fix it, if possible.
The cause of the problem is that in Windows 7 Control Panel > Display I have set the size of "text and other items" to 150% (otherwise everything is much too small too read on my screen's recommended resolution of 1920×1080).
I discovered that Irfan Viewer was also displaying at the incorrect resolution, but I managed to solve that problem by right-clicking on the IrfanView.exe icon and following Properties > Compatibility and selecting "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".
I tried the same procedure with Thunderbird, but it made no difference. It is still displaying at the incorrect resolution.
Any suggestions?

All the white areas of my display are a rapidly flashing pink grid! What did I knock loose?
I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15-inch. I installed a Seagate 1TB SSHD into the optical drive slot a few months ago. It stopped working so I removed for return. I closed the thing up, turned it on, and suddenly (almost) all white spaces on my screen are now pink! A flashing pink grid, to be precise. For example, white icons on my desktop have a few flashing pink artifacts, and most of the white areas on pages in my browser (Chrome) are almost entirely pink.
I've opened the laptop many times before to install ram, HDDs, etc and I've never had any issue. FWIW, a few months ago the logic board was replaced by Apple due to the infamous graphics switching error.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? Could I have knocked something loose? Touched the wrong thing? Shocked the logic board?
Any help is greatly appreciated.I have this exact problem - light gray is fine. Goes to pure white, and it raidly flashes a pink grid. Your post is the ONLY one I have seen just like it. And, I noticed no replies. What did you do to remedy? Or, did you find out it was a fatal problem? Any insight would be helpful before I go spend a lot on diagnostics...
