Alpha Channel for graphics

Hi,
I placed a 32 bit targa file with an alpha channel in my project as a drop zone but it retains a white background. Is there anywhere to specify in DVD Studio Pro to recognize the alpha channel or will it not accept an alpha channel? I swear, the manual is totally useless.

I figured this out. In case anyone is wondering....
The Targa with alpha channel wasn't working. But a Photoshop file with the Color Profile of NTSC and saved with a transparent alpha channel background worked.
ciao.

  • Enabling alpha channel for PNG file

I want to include a logo with a transparent background in an iMovie video, but when I import a PNG file with a transparent background, the background turns black. I think this is because the PNG needs to have alpha channel enabled.
When I attempt to save the file as a new version, the "alpha channel" option is greyed out. How can I save the file with the alpha channel enabled?

    Hi,
You might want to visit this thread for more info on iMovie's handling of transparency:

It sounds like iMovie converts the PNG to a JPG internally for some cases (fit, crop, Ken Burns effect).

  • Alpha channel for targa files in Elements 4?

I've created a .psd, and I need it to be in the tga format, with an alpha channel. No option is provided to save an alpha channel. I've tried everything I can think of, including following the instructions here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=1544
I spent quite a bit of money for this program, but now I'm about to uninstall it, and put on an old copy of Photoshop 5.5. It's almost 1:00 AM, and I've got to get this done tonight.
Why on earth did they break the format??? How about, um, letting the USER decide how to save transparency? Like with a checkbox or a dropdown? Duh. Gads. Yeesh. *sob*

    Barbara and Terri,
Thanks so much for your comments!
So, one solution is to select the whole image, and save the selection as a .TGA? That sounds like a workaround for a bug, which is fine with me. I'll try that out tonight.
I was able to generate my .TGA last night by downloading and installing a free program, called "gimp". I loaded the .PSD in it, then saved it as .TGA, and it worked perfectly, first time. No contortions required. Maybe if they open-source photoshop, bugs like this can be fixed.
We'll see if Second Life (the program I'm needing the file for) will recognize the alpha channel.

  • White-based Alpha channel for flv export

I'm trying to export a sequence into flash (.flv) and include the alpha channel. The default alpha channel base color is black, but I need white because the black creates an outline around the object (check out www.wavereel.com to see the video I exported as an example). There is a way to change the monitor preview video to a white background for frame-by-frame previewing, but whenever it's played, it reverts back to black. How do you change it to white?

I just found this info, which may help us.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4791917&#4791917
which discusses using the Animation Sequence setting and likely a Compressor export as Animation codec from un-rendered timeline.

  • I need to mask video, and maintain the alpha channel for the masked video!

I wanted to know how to mask video in Final Cut Pro 6, I am sure there are options to do so, can someone please help me with getting started. I want to be able to mask video and maintain an alpha channel.
    Thanks in advance,

Did you get anything to show up on the tv?  If you got a aura wallpaper then it's working.
If you did then it's in extended desktop mode or a logical extension of the desktop to the right.  Drage the player off the right side of the screen to the right and it will appear on the TV.
All the options are in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.

  • Using the output of one layer as an alpha channel for another

I was messing around last night trying to create my own sharpen edges filter.  I duplicated a nested layer, applied find edges to the top one, then used the track matte filter on the one below, set the layer above as the target for the effect, and chose luma. Could not get it to work.  I then attempted to make the layer above have alpha by using an luma key and changed the track matte to use alpha, but that didn't work either.
Is there a way to do this?

Be easier to understand if you showed what you are trying to achieve.
I got lost half way thru 2nd sentence.

  • Replacement for FLV with alpha channel

    Hello,
is there some way how to encode video with alpha channel for usage in Flash, when Adobe removed flv encoder from all applications in CC?
    Thank You,

I wonder too if this issue has been addressed yet in CC 2014, or are user till forced to go back to older version of ME if this functionallity is essential to them?

  • How do I save a PNG file with an alpha channel in Photoshop CS5?

I have a PNG file created in Photoshop and I need to save it with an alpha channel for web purposes. I tried 'Save for Web & Devices' and selecting the Transparent box. Then, after saving, when I select 'get info' for the file it says there is no alpha channel. I'm stumped I can't seem to create an alpha channel from within Photoshop while I'm editing. Help!

If you save as a 24bit png with transparent checked photoshop will save the png with transparent background (ie alpha transparency).  The png will appear transparent in a web browser.

  • How to export a video with an alpha channel that can be switched off

    Hi!
I'm stuck with something that I think might have a simple solution:
I need my video to have an alpha channel while still keeping all the RGB information in place too. This is for Syntheyes, which can take the alpha channel for a video and use it as a garbage matte while tracking.
The problem is that if I draw a mask around my video and then export as a PNG (with alpha), the RGB information seems to be gone even when I choose to ignore the alpha channel. I know how to edit the alpha channel in Photoshop while still keeping the RGB elements untouched, but how should I do that in AE?
    Any help will be appreciated!

Okay I will answer my own question:
This worked as soon as I did a proper export as a PNG image sequence. I did my tests with only single frames by using the "save frame as file" -function, which did not work properly (the rbg information was gone).
So the simple solution to this question was:
Draw a mask on the video layer and export with alpha. The RGB will be there, even though the mask hides it in AE.

  • Alpha Channel Lost After Saved

I created an alpha channel for a selection and saved the tiff file. When I reopened the file the next day, I couldn't find the saved alpha channel and the load saving option was greyout. I tried the same process a few times and without any success. Did i miss something?

Do you have Alpha Channels checked in Save As dialog?

  • Cover Flow does alpha channels -- almost!

Just for fun, inspired by the semi-transparent musical note default cover art, I tried adding some artwork (PICT with alpha channel) for some albums. It works! For example (one I think most people would recognize, even if it dates me somewhat): Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon cover. I knocked out all the black in Photoshop with an alpha channel, saved and added the pict.
Now when you scroll through, you see only the prism and light beams floating in mid-air; when it's the next or previous album, you see "through" it to the one below it; when it's the current album, it's against black anyway, so it looks correct.
But... disappointingly, I closed iTunes and reopened it, and drat! The alpha channel is not reloaded! It is in fact still there, which I proved by opening the album, info dialog, select artwork, past into Preview (New from Clipboard) and there it is. (For some reason, I could not get it directly back into Photoshop with the alpha channel, but by saving from Preview, it can then be reloaded.)
So, we're left with a tantalizing future feature for Cover Flow! Round, or other arbitrary shapes. Maybe 3-D objects somewhere down the line?

Using the sort field to try to force things together doesn't quite work, and certainly not when the album artist has more than one album with guests. I think you'll also find there are some enumeration issues in the album menu which may cause the wrong cover to be displayed as you progress through the library. See my recent post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for a somewhat long, but hopefully comprehensive, exposition of the issues.

  • Getting rid of black fringe when using anti-alised alpha channel

I want to take images rendered in Lightwave 9.3 into Photoshop CS2 for compositing. If:
    1. I render objects with antialiased edges over a black background, and then
    2. save out the alpha channel for use as a layer mask in Photoshop
I get a black fringe around the objects resulting from the semitransparent pixels of the antialiased edges revealing the black background in the base image.
How should I avoid this problem to get clean antialiased edges?
    Thanks.

One of the few uses of the Image>Adjust>Brightness/Contrast is choking or spreading Alpha channels. Go to the channels palette and play around with the Alpha to see what happens. Bear in mind that you may want to load the channel as a selection (or not), invert the selection (or not), Modify the selection to expand or contract... (or not), etc, etc.
The point of all the "or nots" is that there is more than one way to attack this. Your willingness to experiment will determine whether you succeed (or not).

  • Alpha channel in after effects

Hi all, i hope you can help me.
What i would like to do is to use a black and white .mov file as alpha channel for another .mov file.
Exactly as in photoshop is possible to do with two images.
Someone can indicate me some easy example or say me if my approach is wrong?
For some reason, I tried to replicate so many tutorials about it, without found exactly what i was searching to do, and without success.
    Thank you so much!

  • DNxHD (.mxf) export with alpha channel

    Hello!
I'm working with one Finnish children's feature film which will star end of this year as an DIT. Movie will include lot's of green screen and the production want's me to do chroma keyed DNxHD 36 renders with alpha channel for AVID editorial. So far I have found out that neither davinci desolve nor assimilate scratch can't do it.  Is it possible to render DNxHD with alpha channel from AE? And can Avid import these files with alpha channel? All help is needed and appreciated.
    Cheers
    Antris

Are you sure your alpha is there? (check by pressing "a" with the mouse over the view window).
Did you try telling FCP that there is an alpha channel? If you did "Send to Shake", Final Cut Pro doesn't expect that the QuickTime it's getting back will contain an alpha channel (It's meant to match your sequence settings). You might try dragging the output directly into the browser to re-import it and see if it recognizes the alpha...
As a matter of fact, maybe you can check in QT Player, load it into QuickTime Player, cmd-j, click on the video track and play with the transparency setting. Try Straight Alpha - that should lead to the background going white - then you'll know its coming out of Shake properly and concentrate on getting FCP to recognize it...
If all else fails (I did just try it here and it worked), maybe try a TIFF or TGA sequence?

  • Problems with Photoshop Alpha Channels

    Hi all
Got a job where I want to use alpha channels to cut-out some images in Photoshop and then put them into an ID frame with a black background. Want to use alpha channels rather than a clipping path as I need the edges to be feathered (have applied 2 pixels of feathering to the selection in Photoshop before saving it).
When I do this and drop it into Quark it looks good but when these images are dropped into ID and then the alpha channel is turned on, with the default Threshold and Tolerance settings, it doesn't look good. It looks like a rough approximation of my alpha channel, all the fiddly bits and bezier curves in the selection have been smoothed out and the feathering has gone. Playing with the settings doesn't really seems to help either. If I turn on the alpha channel in the import options when importing then it comes in as expected but I have quite a few images already in the document that I need to turn on the alpha channels for.
Both PS and ID are CS3. I've tried saving the images both as PSD and tif. Anyone got any ideas? Seems odd that when I import an image with the channel on I can't go to the clipping options and tweak the settings.
    thanks,
    Iain

Thanks for your reply Bob. I've confused things with my terminology I think. We're drawing a path round the image, using bezier curves where appropriate, making that work path a selection (feathering the edge in the process) and then saving the selection (as an alpha channel) and then using the feathered alpha channel in Quark/ID to knock-out the background. Not keen on using a PSD with a transparent background at the moment as these are just test files while we show the customer what it will look like if we do cut-outs. We are making a couple of different alpha channels per image, with different settings, which would mean multiple files if we used your method I think. Maybe once we get the approval from the customer we could use PSDs as you describe but I was just wondering why the options for affecting alpha channels after importing the image aren't working as I expected.
