Ambiguous error messages ??

Hi,
I'm having a problem trying to implement a progressMonitor
for my application, and have used the classes provided in the Java Tutorial, i'm getting the following error messages:
"Visual.java": Error #: 304 : reference to Timer is ambiguous; both class java.util.Timer in package java.util and class javax.swing.Timer in package javax.swing match at line 46, column 15
"Visual.java": Error #: 304 : reference to Timer is ambiguous; both class java.util.Timer in package java.util and class javax.swing.Timer in package javax.swing match at line 52, column 25
where the first error message refers to the following line of code:
private Timer timer;                                                       and the second error message refers to the following line of code:
timer = new Timer(ONE_SECOND, new TimerListener());I was hoping someone could help me out and tell me what these errors actually mean??
Thanks very much for any help

The problem is you imported 2 timer classes, one in javax.swing.Timer and one in java.util.Timer
The way to get around this is to use the exact classes you want to import in your import statements as opposed to using the '*' .

  • Time Machine - ambiguous error message, cannot backup

    I've been without use of Time Machine for sometime (months) now.  I've been getting the following error:
    My backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex - 320GB) was a attached to my Airport Extreme, but in desperation I moved it to being directly attached to my MBP.  I've also excluded large number of files from the back up (reduced the full backup size to half the size of the backup disk).  Also, I've erased and reformatted the back up disk - twice.  No errors on it either.
    What would be really helpful, was if there was some indication as to WHAT the problem actually is.  This is a rather ambiguous error message, which does little to help a person to troubleshooot.  It seems like the backup is being hung up on a file or files...but I'm just guessing.
    Has anybody out there run into this?  If so, what was your solution?

  • How can i get the error message from the thrown/raised exception?

    DB version:10gR2
    Examples for this thread taken from
    Want Stored Procs to get exectuted regardless of preceeding SPs Success or
    I have a package with several functions and procedures inside.I created a caller procedure called callProcs, which will execute various procedures within the package in the appropriate order.
    In the below example i cannot get the error message thrown from line 20
    create or replace package body mypackage
    is
    variable_proc1 number;
    variable_proc2 number;
    variable_proc3 number;
    v_result       number;
    my_exception   exception;
    procedure proc1
    is
    begin
    select 8/0 into variable_proc1 from dual;
    exception
              when others
              then raise my_exception; ----line 20
    end;
    procedure proc2
    is
    begin
    select 1 into variable_proc2 from dual;
    exception
              when others
              then
                   null;
    end;
    procedure proc3
    is
    begin
    select 3 into variable_proc3 from dual;
    exception
              when others
              then
                   null;
    end;
    Procedure caller_proc
    is
    begin
    proc1;
    proc2;
    proc3;
    v_result:=variable_proc2+variable_proc3;
    dbms_output.put_line('The output is '||v_result);
    exception
              when my_exception
              then
    dbms_output.put_line('Heyyyyy the error is '||SQLERRM); -- exception caught at line 64 of caller proc
    end;
    end mypackage;
    When i try executing the caller proc, i don't get the error. Instead i get the text User-Defined Exception as shown below
    set serveroutput on
    exec mypackage.caller_proc;
    Heyyyyy the error is User-Defined Exception
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.Edited by: user10633418 on Mar 10, 2009 11:30 PM

    Thank you justin.
    Sorry my earlier post was a bit ambiguous.
    I wanted the error generated at proc1 to be captured at caller proc's Exception handling section (line 64) so that i could log the error to an ERR_LOG table.
    I can actually log this error at proc1 itself like
    exception
    when others
    THEN
    error_message :='My custom message for the particular proc '||SQLERRM;
    dbms_output.put_line(error_message);
    logerror(error_message); --an autonomous error logging proc
    raise;But there is a RAISE statement in proc1's exception handling, so the exception gets propogated to caller proc's exception handling section {color:#ff0000}*and another redundant row will be created at ERR_LOG table for the same error because there is a*{color}
    logerror(error_message);--an autonomous error logging proc
    in the WHEN OTHERS section of exception handling section of the caller proc
    I want to avoid the creation of this redundant row in ERR_LOG table.

  • SSIS - Getting the detailed error message from a FTP Task

    Greetings all,
    I'm working on a SSIS package that pulls a file down from an FTP server, then has its way with it.
    Under expected conditions, everything is working perfectly. However, I never want to download the same file twice. In order to enforce this, I just set the OverWriteFileAtDest option to false. Obviously, if the file has already been brought over, the package
    fails. This is the intended functionality.
    However, in such a case I want to handle the error separately. Now, when I setup a EventHandler to deal with it, the error message that's passed over is:
    "Error: An error occurred in the requested FTP operation"
    Oh joy. Ambiguity at its finest. However, the detailed description is:
    "Receiving file "/server/folder/file.XLS". File "\\server\folder\file.XLS" already exists.
    Try as I might, I can't seem to capture the detailed error message so that I can act on it. I'm looking for a way to capture this info, pass it to an expression, and then handle it from there.
    Thanks!

    Did you try enabling logging for the package and capturing it in SQL table which case you should get error messages in sysssislog table

  • Gcc and â's in error messages

    Since upgrading to gcc 4.02, error messages are not as useful as before... I get lots of "â"'s...
    Examples:
    d.cc: In function â:
    d.cc:58: error: call of overloaded â is ambiguous
    g++ -Wall -od d.cc
    d.cc: In function â:
    d.cc:19: error: â was not declared in this scope
    d.cc:20: error: expected `;' before â
    d.cc:41: error: â was not declared in this scope
    d.cc:46: error: â was not declared in this scope
    d.cc:46: error: â was not declared in this scope
    make: *** [d] Error 1
    It's always the same. What's wrong?
    (None of my functions/variable names have an "â" in it, of course.)

    Thanks for your replies.
    You're right, it seems to be a "locales" problem.
    When LC_ALL is set to en_US.utf8, gcc produces those "â"'s. When it is set to en_US, everything's fine with gcc. However, I would like to be able to type in umlauts (äöü) in the terminal (I'm using xterm by the way), which is only possible with the former setting. Is there any way to have both?
    well, I'm pretty sure that if you use en_US.utf8 and term term issue. Please try uxterm and report if it remains. It should be possible to default xterm behaviour to utf8 by some .Xedafault settings

  • Overloading ambiguity errors

    Any suggestions on how to resolve the error below?
    "/opt/SUNWspro/current-compiler/include/CC/Cstd/./vector", line 1131: Error: Overloading ambiguity between
    "std::distance<std::vector<bool, std::allocator<bool>>::const_iterator, unsigned>(std::vector<bool,
    std::allocator<bool>>::const_iterator, std::vector<bool, std::allocator<bool>>::const_iterator, unsigned&)"
    and "distance<std::vector<bool, std::allocator<bool>>::const_iterator, unsigned>(std::vector<bool,
    std::allocator<bool>>::const_iterator, std::vector<bool, std::allocator<bool>>::const_iterator, unsigned&)".
    Sometimes the subsequent "Where: While instantiating ...." helps locate the ambiguity.
    (None in this case. ) If this error were coming from user code, specifying '::' or 'std::' helps.
    But when it is in one of the CC include files, is there a recommended approach?
    Any input is appreciated.

    CC: Sun WorkShop 6 update 1 C++ 5.2 2000/09/11
    Thanks.

    If you have copied the error message correctly, it appears you have declared your own "distance"function template outside namespace std, which is causing the ambiguity.
    If you haven't done that, you might have run into a compiler bug. C++ 5.2 is obsolete and is no longer supported, but you can download the most recent patches for it here
    http://wwws.sun.com/software/products/studio/patches/index.html
    and see if that fixes the problem. (In your case, select the link for Forte Developer 6 update 1. The most recent patches are from about 2002.)
    If patches don't help, see if you can post a small compilable code sample that shows the problem.

  • Bug? Ambiguous error on overloaded varargs

    Hi!
    I don't understand why the following code throws an ambigous error.
    I simply create two same-named methods using varargs, one time for int, one time for float.
    If I call it I would suppose that it is resolved in the same way as always on overloaded methods, i.e. the first example should call the int... - version, the third the float...
    But Java throws an ambiguous error at compile-time, though an implicite cast from int to float is not neccessary if all parameters are pure int. Further no error is thrown when passing an int[]-array.
    This seems to me like a kind of bug. I'm using version 1.5.0_06
    public class TempTest {
         public static int getFirst(int... A) {
              return A[0];
         public static float getFirst(float... A) {
              return A[0];
         public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception
              System.out.println(getFirst(1,2,3)); // throws ambiguous-error during compilation
              System.out.println(getFirst(new int[]{1, 2, 3})); // works as suspected for int
              System.out.println(getFirst(1f,2,3)); // works as suspected for float
              System.out.println(getFirst(new float[]{1, 2, 3})); // works as suspected for float
    }

    Ok, I read the chapter but I don't see the reason for this behaviour. Let's assume another more clear example:
    There are simply two methods for finding the maximum of the passed parameters, either passed as int or float
    public class TempTest {
         public static int max(int... a) {
              int max=a[0];
              // find the max of all
              return max;
         public static float max(float... a) {
              float max=a[0];
              // find the max of all
              return max;
         public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception
              max(1,2,3,4,5); // ambiguous, though calling int[] suspected
    }I understood the section 15.12 as follows:
    1. find accessible and applicable methods, here both max(int...a) and max(float...a) will do it
    2. try to find a most specific of them:
    Assuming that an implicite cast is handled as e.g. int <: float in 15.12.2.5 it is that int[] <: float[] but NOT that float[] <: int[].
    Therefore max(int...a) is strictly more specific and maximally specific, so it should be used, and no ambiguous error thrown.
    So it seems that my assumption that implicite type-casting is handled in the same manner as e.g. int <: float is wrong, though I don't know why.
    In my opinion the whole varargs-concept is more or less useless, if you cannot overload a method with them like e.g. max(int... a) and max(float... a), though intuitively it is absolutely clear, that calling max(1,2,3,4) or e.g. explicitely max((int) 1, (int) 2, (int) 3) should call the int-version or any other that is nearest in implicite type-casting.
    So at least pragmatically I cannot be reasonable as long as I don't see any clear reason for that methodcall being ambiguous.
    [EDIT]
    I think I got the problem now:
    Though int <: float it is NOT true that int[] <: float[]. Simple because:
    int i = 3;
    float f = i; // ok
    int[] iarr = new int[4];
    float[] farr = (float[]) iarr; // not possibleThis seems to be the problem when finding the most specific method, because it is neither int[] <: float[] nor float[] <: int[], so ambiguous.
    I see the problem now:
    It is (nearly) impossible to convert between arrays of primitives when passing them by reference. Imagine: changes to the converted referenced array should have to be written back to original array of other primitive type!
    But then there >should< have be done any other trick when implementing varargs, because as mentioned before it is just a silly feature if it is not possible to overload in such a simple manner as max(int... a) with max(float... a)

  • Windows Vista: Ipod Error Message, no longer read by PCs

    Hello,
    I have a 5th generation black ipod video with 30GB of memory.
    The other day I hooked it up to my laptop (Toshiba, 4 months old) that it's been functioning on with no problems whatsoever. This weird error message flashed twice about it not being able to sync because of some software problem.
    Eversince then, the only thing I can charge my ipod on is the family treadmill in the basement (~_~) as no other computer in the house recognizes it. I can't even charge it through the wall sockets, either.
    I have changed the ipod cord, still no luck. I've also reset the device about 3 or 4 times and uninstalled, restarted the laptop then reinstalled itunes. I would like to reset it back to factory settings but that's impossible as computers/laptops don't pick it up. I live very far from a Mac store...
    What's a girl to do? I can't live without my Busta Rhymes and Wu-Tang Clan!
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • Error message into a Variable.

    Dear users,
    I have a rather usual (unusual from the weekend beers for me though!!) query which I can't figure out a proper way to implement.
    My requirement is like this:
    I have a message class in which I want to define a text 'Employee number & not found'.
    I want to use this in the program, but not to raise this error. Instead, I want to move this error message with the Employee number into a Character(200) variable.
    So instead of using MESSAGE e0xx(messageclass) USING employee number, I would like to move the error text into a variable which looks like:
    lv_text = e0xx(messageclass) USING '1234'   which stores the text 'Employee number 1234 not found' in lv_text.
    How would I acheive it??
    Thanks, V!

    Try tis way
    message e999(00) with i_emp-empno into lv_text.
    press f1 in message will provide you more details

  • IPod seen by windows, not by iTunes+ weird error message

    I have a first generation 2GB iPod nano and i use windows xp. I can't load any music because iTunes doesn't see my iPod and an error message pops up that reads like this: "iTunes: iTunes.exe corrupt file. The file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes is corrupt and unredable. Please run the checkdisk utility." I've tried everything, reinstalling iTunes, different versions, reinstalling OS, resetting iPod, even on another computer, same problem. Other than that, the iPod works normally, it's just lacking music..
    and why is there no email adress from apple for service qustions? 10x

    I still don't get it, how can I put it in disk mode if I CANNOT see the iPod in iTunes..?
    Did you read the document i linked you to? here's another link to it:
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
    whereabouts in that procedure in that document (that you get to by clicking that link) does it say that you have to connect it to iTunes to put it into disk mode?
    ... never mind ... i guess you've fixed it anyway ...

  • Error message iPod cannot update b/c all of the playlists no longer exist

    Hello. I have been getting this error message. "Songs on the iPod "MAR(the name of my iPod)" cannot update because all of the playlists selecting for updating no longer exist." And my playlists are still on the left side in my iTunes. They do exist. I have a feeling ths might have to do with the fact that on vacation the person I was visiting gave me a gift of putting all of his music that would fit into the external hard drive part of my iPod, and for the past week or so I have been putting that music onto my 40 GB portable hard drive at home. I suspect I took a vital folder out of my iPod by accident. Right now I have the folder iPod_control if I open my iPod up in My Computer. Am I missing something? Right now my iPod is empty because iTunes made a composite playlist last week and I deleted it thinking I could get my real playlists back. Can you help me, or reccomend a site/someone who can? Thank you.
    PC   Windows XP

    hiya!
    And my playlists are still on the left side in my iTunes. They do exist.
    let's just doublecheck this. folks get this message if they have "automatically update selected playlists only" selected in their itunes "ipod" preferences tab. so bring up that tab ("edit > preferences", click "ipod" while the ipod is showing up in the source list), and do a playlist by playlist crosscheck of the playlists selected in that tab, and the playlists showing up in the itunes sourcelist.
    is there any playlist selected in the preferences tab that isn't showing up in the sourcelist?
    love, b

  • Windows Blue Screen Error Message Appears As Soon As IPod Connected

    Everytime I connect my IPod to my computer, I get the Windows Blue Screen error message. Thought it was the cable, so plugged cable in by itself. No problem. Uninstalled IPod and ITunes software and then plugged in IPod, still got the Blue Screen. The Blue Screen says something about "recent plugged in device problem". It is not the cable, it must be the IPod. Did not have this problem when I bought it. Tried it on labtop and get the same error message. I can't do updater or anything that requires me to plug the IPod into a computer because the Blue Screen appears immediately. When I unplug, the Blue Screen remains and locks up the computer so I have to restart each time. I have tried everything I can think of. Please help.

    Hi Mike thank you for replying,
    I am not able to start the computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good known configuration etc, Each time it quickly blue screens and restarts about two secs into the process.
    I was unable to try a clean OS install from the disk as it gave the blue screen error shown in the original post. The same thing happened when I tried to use the repair option on the XP home disc. So i can't get into the computer at all to start diagnosing the fault, the only clue I have is the error message, and after searching the internet I haven't found much enlightenment from that yet.
    If you can help me out or suggest where to search it would be much appreciated.
    Thx

  • IPod Error Message: "The disk could not be read from or written to."

    Hello!
    I was syncing my sister's video iPod (30GB) and this error message pops up "Attempting to copy to the disk. "SARAH'S IPO" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
    I have restored it three times already, but once it starts putting the music and files back onto the iPod it pops up with that error message. I have updated to the latest version of iTunes and iPod software available. My OS is Windows XP.
    Is this something serious? Will I be able to fix it myself or will I need to send it in to be fixed by Apple? Will that be expensive? We didn’t get the Apple replacement plan. D=
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. ^_^

    Okay I went thru that entire list and here's what I got...
    (1) My OS is XP and is running fine.
    (2) I've updated my windows
    (3) I don't know of any software that might be interfering.
    (4) There are no damaged files.
    (5) My Windows hard-drive is not damaged and I've tried restoring my iPod's disk thru iTunes but it still doesn't work.
    (6) I don't have an iPod photo and I can't find the folder to delete the cache if if I did.
    (7) The USB cord is firmly connected into my USB port and my iPod
    (8) My music is on my external hard-drive so I need to keep 3rd-party hardware connected
    (9) I will try another USB cord to see if that works.
    Is there anything else that I can do? Can Apple fix this?
    Please let me know.

  • IPod Touch will no longer sync...error message.

    For some reason my older iPod Touch without a camera on it will not sync any more and I am getting an error message saying this iPod cannot be synced. Now I had it set up to sync over Wi-Fi and I would occasionally hook up to the computer with the cable and got error messages on both. Now I read something about removing the SC Info Folder. If I do that will that mess things up with syncing my iPhone?

    What is the exact wording of the error message?
