AME - Unknown Error encoding failed/freeze/hangs h.264
Hi Guys,
I am using Premiere Pro CS (6.0.3) update. I have been working on Premiere , After Effects and AME for at least 1 year. I bought Adobe Production Premium Box. Usually I use footage from Canon 5d and GOPRO 2 and 3. Lately, longer video have been crashing after 10 min when rendering to H.264 - mov or just h.246 in 1080p 25fps (both using AME and Direct Export in Premiere). I never had this problem before with longer videos (10 min long and more). I tried different source paths, no effects, frame blending, turn of Mercury Playback engine.
Messages:Unknown Error Encoding failed - if using AME (sheep sound)
Or: Freeze - the program does not repond and I have to close it
Using direct premiere export - freezes or just stands still during rended/hangs.
MXF, loosles AVI seems fine.
I tried different projects and all formats. I checked CPU temp and it is max 60C.
I lost all hope. Is it hardware?
Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit
MB Asus m4a785t evo
AMD Phenom II x4 955BE
Nvidia GTX 580 DCII (Cuda)
SSD - system (256GB)
2 x hdd 7200 (2x500GB)
Ps. i used cache clean, mercury playback on/off, different GPU - still crashes on H.264 (Youtube 1080, Vimeo 1080, Android Table 1080 25fps)
Any tips?
Arti
That dreaded sheep!
While I would still want more RAM for AE to operate off, I dont think that is the problem. The only other thing I persoanlly can suggest is that that is an installation error on AME.
Uninstall all programs that use AME - Premiere, After Effects, Flash etc, restart yourt machine then reinstall.
Then try again.

Error compiling movie - unknown error - encoding failed
I am running a 2.40 GHz Quad Core with 8GB RAM
I have a deadline on a video project in Premiere Pro CS4 with 4 video timelines and 8 audio timelines with many transitions and key frames with hours on two sequences of work completed and ready to export to an AVI file and burn a DVD. The 30 minute sequence with only 3 timelines converted to AVI file okay. The larger sequence with more timelines, keyframes, etc. will not export through Adobe Media Encoder for a Microsoft AVI file or an Uncompressed AVI file - getting the above error message each time. Getting same errors when exporting a dynamic link to Encore to burn a DVD.
The sequence acted funny when I loaded the fourth video timeline so I deleted it and waiting untill the completion of the sequence to add any of that fourth timeline to that sequence and I did not even try to load the fourth timeline that I wanted to add...
Here are the error messages I am getting:

I have been going back & forth with Adobe Support with troubleshooting advice. I am running a 2.40 GHz Quad Core, 8GB RAM - had to upgrade to Windows Vista 64-bit for computer to recognize more than 2GB RAM, had to purchase Premiere Production Premium CS4 because Adobe no longer supported Premiere Pro 2.0 & Adobe does not support Windows XP-64 bit (so Windows Vista was pushed down my throat...) I have followed the Adobe instructions to Optimize Windows Vista for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, I have uninstalled and re-installed the full program more than once. I have defragmented my computer, I have performed the disk cleanup and deleted all temporary files, etc. to make sure my computer is running optimally.
I have read the other Adobe threads that talk about CS3 & earlier similar error messages, but have found nothing with this particular message. I have deleted the fourth timeline off of the video and tried to see if that would make it work, but it did not.
Does ANYBODY have any suggestions on how I can further trouble shoot to get this project out or know of a way that I can export this project to another program to get an AVI file and a DVD burned with custom menus...I am using a 1TB Hard drive with 300 GB free space. Yes, I always have to delete projects off to make room for new projects. I have 3 750GB hard drives in my computer in addition to the main C drive that I am using. Once a project is completed and a client is satisfied, I move the final AVI file off to one of the auxillary drives and delete the entire project from the C drive. Then I defragment, delete temp files, disk cleanup, you name it to get the drive ready to use for the next project. I have followed the Adobe protocol for all of this as well as my computer vendor. I got rid of 95 GB of temp stuff several days ago with the disk cleanup and another 45 GB after deleting another project off my computer... so looks like I am doing these things..please advise if you know of anything else.
In the meantime, I am going to try to export to the MPEG2 -DVD export to see if this will work. I did get an uncompressed file of 31 GB created which errored out at 24:24 minutes into the project and the AVI will not play so it is worthless so I am going to delete it. I went to the timeline at 24.24 minutes and there is nothing unusual about that portion of the clip. This is the largest and most tedious timelines of the project because it is stacked 3 video timelines high with just a a few pieces of the 4th timeline in the project. 24:24 on the timeline is just another keyframe of moving the keyframes up and down to show which video camera version I want visible in that portion of the video - fading in and out of the project with the key frames...
I will let you know if I can get an MPEG2 file. Will this be a good enough quality to put on a DVD. This is a standard NTSC 4:3 format video... -
LR 2.1 - Importing catalog sees 'Unknown Error' and fails.
Anybody else seen this dialog box?
'Could not import catalog due to unknown error'
This is happening in LR 2.1. First catalog import attempt. I've had no issues previously.
Upon importing, LR will go through the whole process as though importing, and then at the end of the progress bar, I get the above dialog box. And nothing's there. The import failed.
Anyone else seen this? Suggestions?

(MacBook Pro intel 2.2)Hey Geoff,
Great to hear from you, as always. :)
Well, there were more un-cataloged images that may have been contributing to the situation. I had created web-rez images for my client within subfolders of the main client folder. Once I synchronized, the images were added. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the error message at the end of my import. Now, the weird thing is, if I import the LR catalog only, it disappears after the error message. But, if I tell the import to include the 'Digital Negatives', which includes all the session files (RAW,PSD, jpegs), after the import and then the error box, everything seems to be there and actually looks fine. At least as far as I can tell. I can see the all the files, the ratings, the keywords, etc. A little un-nerving though to say the least. I'm afraid to dump my original catalog and folders.
FYI, what's going on is that I work on my current client sessions (including all related files) off of my MacBook Pro as my 'Current' catalog. I then have my main LR Catalog (all other images) on a back-up RAID drive. So I'm trying to export from the MBP, over to the back-up RAID LR Catalog.
Again, the 'Export' seems to go fine. Not sure what's going on here.
Thanks for your help and input. -
Syntax errors with ES freeze/hang FM
Hi,
I keep bumping into situations where a small syntax error causes FM to freeze, like there is a modal dialog open except there is no dialog. For example:
doc = app.ActiveDoc();
...this is wrong because of the parenthesis, but rather than throwing any errors, FM just freezes and I can't get it unfrozen, except to kill it with the Task Manager. Is there a way to prevent this freeze or at least thaw it out? It's becoming tiresome to restart FM and reset locks, etc. with every little typo.
Thanks,
RussHi Russ,
I think this won't help you, but I can reproduce this with app.ActiveDoc() and app.ActiveBook().
With other properties I get a correct runtime error "app.AutoBackup() is not a function".
So generally it works as expected, but not in these two cases.
I think this is a problem of the script engine in these two cases. Perhaps there's an invisible (private) method defined, which is used internally, I don't know.
Bye

System image utility fails "Unknown error has occurred"
Hi,
I can create disk images from 10.8.3 clients but when i'm putting them through system utility on the 10.8 server it fails after hours of running.
The log is set to debug and shows the image creates upto 83% then jumps to 100% and later shows unknown errors and failed to create image from restore souce.
I've created several disk images and saved them to different locations on the server as the source and final image.
Below i've put in the debug log. Someone please help!!

Unknown error.
I'm really not sure what the problem is. Everything seems fine in all my other movies but something in this one (and one other one) seem to be causing these failures. Any advice you could give would be really appreciated. What are the source files in this (and the other offending) Project? Do they match those Sequence/Project Presets?
Does the Audio in these source files differ in any way?
What is different about this/these Project(s), from the others?
Often, Encoding will fail because of gaps in the Video. However, the error message is usually "Failure to Return Frame."
Good luck,

One solution to AME stops encoding using Mercury Engine with an "Unknown Error" - Mac only
I recently switched from FCS to CS5.5 - it's been a somewhat rough ride - and I kept getting an "Unknown Error" if I tried to export a sequence while having the mercury engine gpu-enabled.
After finishing my latest project just three days ago I found a solution, go figure. Well, here it is: the offender were imported dissolves from FCP. They play perfectly in PPro, they render perfectly in software mode, but never once while using the GPU. The solution to that is equally simple: deleting the offending dissolves and create a new dissolve, same length, same effect name, nothing's changed. But now, they render just beautifully using Mercury Engine in GPU mode.
If somebody likes to look into that, I created a small project for re-checking.Sure, no problem. Where would you like me to put it? Including the sources, its about 50MB (I replaced to original footage with low-res, low-datarate stuff). Or do you only need the project file?

I'm trying to encode an x264 codec Quicktime using AME 6.0.2.81 and Mac OS 10.8.2. I also tried it with two versions of the x264 encoder which I downloaded from here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24173/x264encoder
This encoder works 100% fine and better than the h264 encoder when using Apple Compressor and Apple QT Pro V7. I've been however trying to transition all of my video encodes to AME due to a number of reasons: dynamic link to AE, Premiere and the interface to name a few.
Everytime I start an encode it gives me an error and I hear that blasted sheep. lol. This is what the log displays, which is frankly probably no help to anyone.

I've also tried to specify the bitrate and have had no luck. Whether I specify the bitrate or not, I still get the error. The source video has been PNG sequences and ProRes movies at 1920x1080, 29.97fps. Both result in the same unknown error.
Any suggestions? Thanks!I know this is pretty old now, but I thought I'd add a reply for those who are having this issue. I just had AME CC 2014 fail on me today, and this is the FIRST thing I've ever tried to render with it. I'm using a TGA sequence and exporting to an X264 codec Quicktime MOV file at 720p. I restarted a few times, repaired permissions etc. and nothing worked except for the following.
I went to:
Library/Preferences/Adobe/Adobe Media Encoder/8.0/
I deleted the entire 8.0 folder (or you could delete whatever version you are having problems with). I then restarted AME and the preferences were recreated and I could successfully use the x264 codec again. Hope this helps someone. -

The system is as follows:
Size of .pst file: 2.3 GB (Unicode format so there should be plenty of space left)
OS: Windows 7 (64-Bit)
Application: Outlook 2013 (32-Bit)
The user upgraded from Outlook 2010 a few months ago and the error message has only recently started appearing on startup. I thought it was a corrupt mail profile, so I have already tried creating a new mail profile, as well as the repairing tool in Outlook.
I even tested another email account and that worked just fine. So apparently it is something wrong with the specific user's account/profile and not something wrong with the computer - since my email account worked fine on his computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.I had the same error message, only in my situation Outlook would only open successfully every 4 or 5 attempts. When Outlook would open (versus just hanging at the splash screen), I would get two dialog boxes with the warning/error message.
After I clicked okay I could get into Outlook.
Previously I experienced this problem running my Office 2010 client with my Exchange 2007 mailbox on my old laptop. The problem followed my mailbox through an Exchange 2010 migration (so new Exchange org), client upgrade to Outlook 2013, and a new
laptop (so I knew it wasn't a corrupt profile). This led me to the conclusion that it was a corrupt item(s) in my mailbox.
To resolve the issue, I archived *everything* in my mailbox to a PST file, ran SCANPST to fix the corruption, and then uploaded everything back into my Exchange mailbox one folder at a time, stopping after each folder to close and restart Outlook so I could
narrow down which folder had the corrupt item if the problem recurred. I'm happy to say my issue is now resolved. -
Attempt to burn a disc failed - unknown error 4260
I see there are lots of topics about not being able to burn CDs in iTunes but I can't find one with the exact same error message as mine - 4260. I've not had any problems before (I haven't tried to burn a CD for some months), but today I tried to burn a CD with purchased tracks from iTunes Store, and it seemed to have burned okay. Then when I played it in the car, the first 3 tracks were fine and then the rest were jumpy and had an awful background noise. Came home and found it wouldn't play properly in the computer (froze iTunes at track 4) or on my CD player. Tried again to burn to another disc, iTunes went through the motions, no problem, then said it was finalising the disc, then suddenly said it was cancelling the burn, and "Attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error [4260] occurred". Again the first three tracks play okay, but the rest do not. The first 11 tracks are from an album I only downloaded yesterday, they play from the library and are authorised to play on my computer, so that's not the problem.
I can't find a reference to this particular error on iTunes support base online or in this forum. If anyone can help I'd be very grateful but I realise that it's a big problem for a lot of people. I don't understand why it worked alright before but now doesn't. I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes recently (v.6.0.4.2), so perhaps that's the problem?

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Windows XP ProIn case anyone reads this, I managed to burn my CD by changing the speed of the burn in iTunes. It was set on Maximum possible and I noticed from the CD Diagnostic report (see previous article) that the speed of the drive was listed as 16, but the burn had failed at 24x, so I reduced it to 12 to be safe, and it worked. It plays okay in the car but I have noticed that when I restart the player, it doesn't seem to recognise the CD and ejects it so that I have to push it back in, and it then starts at track 1 again. Not sure if this is to do with the way it was burned, but at least its playing the tracks!

Media Encoder cc 2014.1 crashing with unknown error on h.264 every time
I am unable to render ANY timelines using h.264 for any format (presets or customized). The audio preparation procedure completes and the timeline seems to render fine for a while. Anyone have a suggestions? Any solutions, Adobe?Hi KB8WFH,

It is almost never in the same place. I have encountered both on a Mac and a Windows PC a problem where it will always crash when it encounters a Warp Stabilizer effect added to a clip. But even removing those, the render failed every time at seemingly random place soon the same sequence/timeline being rendered.
That's pretty frustrating but it doesn't sound familiar. I can look into it.

I have noticed that this seems to now only happen on projects I upgraded from a previous version of Premiere.
OK. Sorry to hear that exports are affected as well.
KB8WFH wrote:
I understand Adobe's policy is that it is not a good idea to move a project from over version into an upgraded application, but this is really not practical.
Actually, it's not Adobe's policy, it's mine. It's also been a general editor's rule of thumb since the dawn of NLEs.
Project file handling is something I learned in trade school. I was taught to protect the project file from application updates. This was at Avid Bootcamp back in 1996 by some of the best NLE instructors in Hollywood. Eventually, I taught these concepts to my NLE students when I became a certified instructor a bit later.
I learned that not only do you avoid updating your project file, but you must have at least 3 back up copies at all times in 3 different places every single day. You should also avoid updating your OS, plug-ins or crucial hardware along the way. The more complex the project file is, the more susceptible it may be to corruption and you must be even more vigilant than normal projects, as you may be protecting weeks, months, or even years of work.
With the many updates of Premiere Pro CC it's certainly not that practical, but something to keep in mind as you work on a large project.
KB8WFH wrote:
New versions are used for their new features and big fixes. Microsoft does not tell their customers not to open documents made in previous versions of their MS Word in upgraded versions because of issues. That defeats the entire purpose of upgraded software.
I do understand your stance on upgrading software. It should not be harmful to do. You should also be able to update a Premiere Pro project file without too much trouble. Sometimes, it's crucial to see if you can take advantage of a bug fix with an update. I learned that you just need to be super careful with large, complex projects like features and docs. If you must update, do so with plenty of project file back ups and a wary eye. If the situation goes awry, you can always return to these project files.
KB8WFH wrote:
I am attempting to use the project Manager to export the timeline into a new project and see if I can render that and it it makes any difference. Will let you know as soon as I have any results.
That's a good idea. Let us know if it works for you.

I am trying to export a a batch of six sequences, out of Premiere Pro CC to my internal hard drive using the Apple ProRes 422 Quicktime setting. All of the sequence exports are failing in the first couple of seconds. This happens if I do them individually directly out of Premiere and if I export them out as a batch to Media Encoder. All get the same "Error compiling movie. Unknown error." error message. I have tried restarting the computer, that didn't fix it. I had the same problem with some other files yesterday but I was able to export them out individually OK. But with this batch, no dice. The sequences are all fully rendered. There aren't any problematic clips in the sequences, not that I can tell. None of the sequences is very long, only about 1-2 mins each.
Any ideas?
