If I replace my old iMac with a new one can I burn DVDs on an external drive using Mountain Lion or Toast?

My 2006 iMac is getting a bit long in the tooth and I was thinking of replacing it with a new one. However, Mac have not included an optical drive and I back up my photographs on DVD as well as external hard drives. I also supply DVDs of my work to friends etc.
Will I be able to burn to an external drive using Mountain Lion or other software such as Toast? Does the burn option still exist on the new machines?

Thank you for your suggestions. I downloaded a more recent version of Twain, but this didn't help. I also tried closing and opening Photo Shop and restarting my computer without success. Reinstalling Photo Shop sounds like a very promising solution, but I'm not sure I will do it. In the meantime I can scan items using a printer program. These scans open in Photo Shop. It is an extra step.

Call the Apple Store and ask them to sell you a copy, you can then use the combo updater or you can buy a copy on eBay, but make sure it's the black retail copy and not a grey machine specific disc.

Replace the Time Capsule with a new one or replace your router with an Airport Extreme Base Station that has faster Wi-Fi. Or you could just connect your old Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection from the Time Capsule to the computer's Ethernet port.

ITunes library 'attached' to an old email address. Had to replace my iMac with a PC. trying to play my music from my old iTunes library, but it's saying it's not authorized. how do I get all my music playable on my new pc?

I had an iMac G5 that I loved, but ultimately it wouldn't start up. I replaced the popped caps on the logic board, and it ran for a little while, then died again. I was able to back up my stuff including my iTunes library before it finally died. I couldn't afford a new mac and I had to buy a PC. I moved my library over, but the playlists are all gone, and when I try to play songs, it says the computer isn't authorized to play the music. I authorized via the iTunes Store menu, but my Store/Apple account is not the same email address as the older email address tied to the songs which I purchased years ago. Can I change the email address attached to these songs or add an old/inactive email address to my Apple account somehow?

Previously backed up wife's Compaq Laptop along with my iMac and MacBook Pro to Time Capsule. Replaced wife's Windows Vista Laptop with new Sony Windows 8 Laptop. Now can't access Time Capsule to back-up.

Open windows explorer and type in the TC address directly in the address bar.

If no go, ping the TC ip address .. still no go, then the networking on the windows machine is set wrongly.. never used win8 so no idea.. but turn off the firewall and ensure the laptop is in the home area, not work not public.
You have to get ping response to open the TC.
On the TC setup the guest access to on and full read and write access.

1. Your printer will work with Gutenprint support, possibly will work with 10.9 drivers.
2. Epson has a scanner Yosemite driver for your scanner.
3. And Wacom has a driver for your tablet.
You have no reason to be that miserable, all things considered.

The Apple Store will offer to recycle it for free, you are better off selling it on ebay or elsewhere, I have seen decent looking ones go from $80-$250 here in Australia.

Currently I am driving the old 30" cinema display with a macbook pro also purchased 2005 and happy to say I got a lot of good miles out of this rig. I can find online new in unopened box a 2012 iMac 27" i7 with 1T Fusion Drive for $1899 no sales tax. This seems like a pretty good deal since I notice the same is available from Apple refurbished for $100 more plus sales tax. I know that they say the Fusion drive is a lot faster on 2013 models but some of the speed tests I reviewed online showed the 2012 i7 and 2013 i7 very close on speed for both storage and processing. Any thoughts?
I don't like changing batteries so I would buy a separate Apple keyboard with numeric pad since it only comes with wireless keyboard. I'm a trackpad enthusiast having been using my macbook pro trackpad with current set up; and I am prepared to buy the Apple trackpad and replace batteries every 2 months but I would greatly prefer USB connection and rechargeable trackpact. I know Logitech makes one so if anyone is using and knows how it compares to Apple's I'm all ears.

Old iPod mini with a new iMac using a different iTunes library

I just bought a new iMac (never before owned one). I have an iPod mini with a bunch of music on it that I downloaded from a library on an IBM, which I no longer have. How can I transfer all of the music that is currently on my iPod mini to the library in iTunes of my brand new iMac? I can't seem to find any options that allow me to do this. It looks like I can only erase my iPod memory and replace with the Library on my iMac, which is currently empty. Please tell me that I don't have to re-create a new libray on my iMac.

Thanks for the information. I just got done with the iPod. I was able to use Senuti to dowload all of the contents of my iPod into iTunes and then update my iPod mini's software and reload all of the songs back onto the iPod. It was freakin' awesome!!

IMac 8.1 3.06 GHz w/6 MB Ram, Lion and dead HD? all I get is "Gray Screen w/wirlie gig" but now for a new twist a circle with a diagonal line, like don't go. Is this a DEAD HD?

          I have a iMac 8.1 3.06 GHz w/6 MB Ram, and was running Mac OS X 10.6.8. My 500 GB WD5000AAKS was about 90% full. I had an issue with the admin password, it would not accept any of my known passwords. I ran for a while on the fingerprint reader I had, we have two users on the machine in our home. I tried many attempts to fix this problem without success I came up with a plan. That plan was a new HD, used a 2TB Samsung. plan worked like a charm. Installed a 4 GB Ram Chip and the new Samsung, formatted it, loaded Snow Leopard, and loaded what was on my Time Machine backup all was good.
          This was early July, then Lion was available I was happy with what I had, I had 1.450 TB of free space. So, what the heck, lets spring for Lion, that even went well for a not even 2 weeks, enough that I had several Time Machine backups.
           Then monitor goes flash, flash then I try a re-boot same gray screen with whirlie gig that I had when the the HD in my MacBook Pro died. Put the old 500 GB WD back in and all was fine, ran for a day. It was OK except back to no password and full. Went down to my local computer shops here in Rayong Thailand and sprung for a New 2 TB WDXXX, put that in, used my Snow Leopard disk to format and load OS X 10.6.8. I though that all was good, the load from Time Machine was slow and the time remaining was changing all the time, took about 3 hrs for about 300 MB that where on the LaCie.
          Now I have a password issue, however it asks for a password reset that it will NOT take and I don’t even get that now. All I get is the infamous “Gray Screen w/wirlie gig” but now for a new twist a circle with a diagonal line, like don’t go. Is this a DEAD HD? I plan to re-install the old 500GB just to systems check and if all is well I will take the “NEW” 2 TB WD back for replacement. Yes, I have tried control “R” on boot, nadda, no response, “mai dee” no good. Ideas, please.

I have an iMac 8, 1 that I upgraded Leopard to Snow Leopard. It was totally updated with the latest from Apple when I bought and tried installing Lion. The upgrade failed, shot my OS and I couldn't boot. Had the constant spinner on a grey screen.. did a format of the drive, hdd repair and everything came back clean... got back to Snow Leopard and all the updates on it again and then retried the Lion thing... same bs... dead duck. Crashed my system one too many times. I can't see where a few small changes, mostly app related can be classified as an OS upgrade and is not compatible with my iMac. I have the stuff running on my Mac Pro but have yet to notice anything impressive. I've always used F3 and really didn't require Mission Control. Just open you app folder for launch pad... duh? I use the hot corners anyhow. As far as Safari is concerned... as a power user, Apple missed the boat on that for me.. full screen etc.. Wow. I don't like the new Mail either..
As you can see/read, I'm less than impressed with this release from Apple but I own so many of their products that I will have to put up with it for now... somehow the MS logo should apply to this release Steve.
