Another Career Advice thread

Hi All, I just have a bit of a career question/rant. I'm hoping some of the more experienced members may be able to guide me.
It seems to me that there are two general "streams" or career paths that a database developer can go down. One can become a BI specialist and work with data warehouses and the ETL processes that come with it, or one can become an expert in transactional processing with high-volume OLTP systems.
I'm at the stage in my career (having been an oracle developer for 9 years) where I'm actively trying to get the illustrious "investment bank contract". However I'm butting my head against what seem to be (to me, at the moment) unreasonable requirements.
I regularly see in job advertisements, statements like "must have experience working in a large commercial environment with 5Tb+ OLTP systems", "experience with High volume OLTP systems essential" and the incredibly restrictive: "Must have prior investment banking experience".
I understand that there is business reasons for wanting to have someone with prior investment banking experience, but my (potentially ignorant) rant is that the coding methodologies for "high-volume" OLTP systems should be the same as "lower-volume" ones. You write the code to the best of your ability and ensure that it is efficient as possible, you keep abreast of the latest additions to PL/SQL and you use all the tools oracle provides as appropriate. As far as I can see, there is no magic wand that instantly makes a programmer "able" to deal with high volume systems.
An example of a question that frustrates me: my friend (a java programmer) asked me "so if you had a large volume web-driven transactional environment and you needed to ensure that the code was running as efficiently, what techniques would you use". I was speechless, I answered that I couldn't possibly know what techniques to use without seeing the architecture and knowing the data. He tried to prompt me for just examples and I hesitantly spouted off things like "pipelined table functions", "query tuning" and "bulk processing techniques" etc. I felt it was like asking a builder "if you had to build a building, what tools would you use?"..."a spade?, a jackhammer? a bobcat?, blasting equipment? Nails? Hammer?" What's appropriate for the job. they're all just tools and it will depend on if you're building a skyscraper or a cubby house for someone's kid....
When I get asked "have you created tables before?" at job interviews I tend to look at the interviewer incredulously and say "yes...." waiting for a follow on question and possibly it comes across as hesitation, when they don't follow up or just say "oh, good" I think to myself "of course I have you moron, I wouldn't be much of a database developer if I hadn't", . But I feel like an idiot putting "have created tables, indexes, constraints" on my CV, in just the same way a builder would feel if he put "have hammered nails, screwed screws and cut wood" on their CV. But apparently it is something recruiters want to see?
...and so my question is: what's so special about high volume systems? What esoteric coding methodologies am I missing? I guess, more to the point: What skills do I need to demonstrate to a potential interviewer and on my CV?
Back to the builder analogy: "oh yes, I'm very good at using a spade and I've used a hammer for over 10 years and know some very good hammering techniques. I'm also have experienced of using a nail gun and a saw." What am I missing here?

Quick one.
With 9 (continuos) years of development, I think you should not be scared of those adverts as long as you have the technical experience. The business or banking knowledge will come on the job. The recruiters post what they have been given from a list of generic requirements. At some places, they will ask you in details. At some, they will not.
On Sector knowledge, it is required in most cases, but if a manager wants to give you a start, then they will not bother once you have the experince. They are stated as beginners. No one was born on the job.
One simple Q&As. The questions are asked to test your ability to respond to requests or tasks. For instance, just answering "Yes" to answer "Have you created a table before", is not enough. I already know that after 9 years, you have created tables, but I would like you to follow it up with an example and a project scenario.
Another reason I would ask you "what is a table" is to test your patience. We always think is is an insult to be asked cheap questions in an interview, but your to-be manager would like to know how you would support and react your users/clients when they are those common simply end-user questions.
High volumes of data requires high efficiency processing. Fora instance, your friend wanted to know what you will put in place to ensure efficiency of a "web-driven transactional environment". One simple clue (out of many) is that the user at the Web front end wants to see the data as quickly as possible. So if I have 1000 rows to retrieve on the screen, I do not want to wait to see the 1000 at the same time. I want to see it 100 rows at a time. So at the database level (of session) I can use FIRST_ROWS to tell optimizer to get things fast, set arraysize to 100, create my screen to show 100 rows and provide a Next button. This is one simple answer to let them know that you have an idea. Later you can research the harder ones.
So, if you see the advert, go for it. Just let them know that you are willing to learn the business sector part of things on the job.
Goodluck

  • Yet another grey folder thread, help!

Sorry for yet another grey folder thread, but here goes:
Today, earlier, installed Firefox update, along with some addon updates for that program. Quit Firefox and attempt to relaunch, relaunch fails. Reset computer, thinking that will do the trick, I now have grey folder with question mark.
Resolve attempts: reset pram = fail; apple care cd = will not launch/fail; disk utility from original install disks = fail; cannot get repair of disk or permissions to work, continually get error about "failing on exit"; safe mode launch = fail
So, I've done everything, and I've come to conclusion that I am f***, and my HDD is fried (but I hope I am wrong).
    So, dear gurus, my question(s)
    A) Is my HDD salvageable at all? is there some trick to getting the AppleCare cd to work? Anything?!?!
if not, then B) How can I recover my documents/music/pictures? Long story short, there are several things on there that never had a chance to make my back up schedule, and I desperately want to keep them. Any way to make/copy a disk image to save the docs/imgs, or Firewire them to an external hdd? Do I need to consider a professional HDD rescue?

Looks like a mechanical failure, and Apple won't cover the replacement due to a drop it sustained a year or two ago (the power cable was in, and it fell on the connection point, denting that in, Apple states there is a critical board their and that it would be $950 Tier 3 repair which I can't afford). So I'm going to try a Firewire Migration and a few other things and see if that works. If not, oh well. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

I have over 200 hours of HD video on 5 different TB Thunderbolt GRaid hard drives. I need to reorganize my projects, moving large files from one drive to another. Advice?

Do some testing to get your method working right with some less than important footage.
Copy/paste files where you want then.
Use the FCE Reconnect feature to tell FCE where the newly copied files reside.
Make sure the new location and files are working as expected with your Projects.
Delete the original files if no longer required.

  • BI Career Advice

    Hello Experts,
I am looking for some general BI-related career advice.
I am currently a BI report writer with minimal IT experience (I have only been using BI for one year).  I am interested in pursuing a masters degree to gain the appropriate knowledge to further my career, working towards becoming a BI developer.
Can you suggest any graduate programs, SAP training, or literature?  What steps should I take to get started? I don't know where to begin!
    Thanks for your advice,
    Kathryn

    Hi,
I am SAP, Germany certified consultant in BI 7.0 as well as MM (ECC 5.0).
SAP started with OLTP (online transaction processing) which is in other way known as R/3 System.
Till today most of the Tier-1 companies have laready implemented R/3 system. Most of the Tier-2 companies have already started implementing .
Because of price contraints and competions, Tier-3 and below companies are not  very much attractive for top IT companies. Hence the quality of work and recognition will not be much in future in R/3 jobs.
In the year 2000, SAP has come up with Enterprise Data Warehousing which is now coupled with Planning to form Business Intelligence (BI).
BI essentially deals with OLAP (Online Analytical processing).
This means it deals with Analysis with Historical data most efficiently. As such strategies are adopted on the basis of this analysis.
To concise, R/3 system in SAP eliminates requirement of many junior staff in accounts, sales, purchase, stores, costing. Whereas BI has started eliminating requirement of many managers. When BI is implemented, CEO of  a company can himself do a lot.
In many tier-1 companies BI still have to be implemented as they have started realising managers are too expensive.
For futuristic point of view learning more and getting certified by SAP in BI would be beneficial.
Regarding costs and tutorials on BI, please get in touch with SAP LABS immediately.
    Regards,
    Subha

  • Can anyone help?? Another new MacPro thread....

    Hi all.
Another person here having big issues with PP CC 2014 on the new MacPro..
    A little background;
I've been having issues with PP for years. Previously I was a photographer, and Lightroom was my software of choice. That was a great Adobe experience, pretty faultless software really...
Then when I moved to video it was a different story... obviously it's a whole different ballgame dealing with video files, I've not had much luck with my editing workflow!
I was working off an underpowered PC first, then was on a few Macbook Pros. Eventually, I got the go ahead to get a new MacPro from my employer, I thought that would solve all my problems! How wrong I was!
Even after the apparent "fix" for the GPU issues, I'm still having problems...
I'm no Adobe basher....No one wants PP to work well more than me (Al Mooney got highly offended on Twitter after I suggested PP might be slightly less than perfect!)
I'm hoping I might get some tips to improve performance or even a fix for the issues I'm having.
    Here's the gist of my specs, can give more if needed;
    Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C109)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    My main drive is a G RAID 8GB TB2
    So,
My main issue is that when a sequence gets more complex, the performance dips massively, to the point where it's unusable and crashes constantly.
The timeline freezes, the playhead is laggy, the system gets really slow to respond in general..... Maybe 15 seconds for the keyboard to respond to keypresses. (or else I need to tap spacebar twice instead of once to get it to respond). If I try to make any change on the timeline that anything more than a simple delete etc, the system can freeze and I need to force quit.
Another symptom is that when quitting the program, often it doesn't quit properly and I need to force quit.
The sequences I'm working on don't seem that demanding (especially give the machine I have) so it's really confusing as to what the issue is.
We're talking videos usually in the 2 -5 minutes range. Maybe 4 video layers. Footage wise; generally 1080p XAVC from a Sony F5, some Canon 4K from a 1DC. Can PP really handle native footage, should I be transcoding??? One of the big benefits of PP is the apparent ability to handle native formats, so it's really disappointing if that's the issue....
I do use a reasonable amount of plugins, like Izotope for denoising dialogue, the dreaded Red Giant plugins, and occasionally Red Giant Denoiser (is this the root of my problems??!). My current project has two layers keyed interviews (2 angles) and I'm using Ultrakey for that. (I bought Red Giant Primatte Keyer, but my system isn't powerful enough to run it without major issues....ridiculous!!)
If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. I've read other threads but my issue seems different. I can't rule out that I'm making some obvious mistake in my workflow either... so any general workflow best practise tips in that regard would be good too.
Sorry for the long thread and thanks for reading.

    Hi healyb2,
    Sorry you're experiencing this issue.
I think I've identified one of the issues, Izotope 4 Dialogue Denoiser.....
I've disabled it on an existing sequence and the crashes have stopped (for now).
Let us know if these issues crop up again. You can let us know directly here: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug
So, possibly (like Red Giant) Izotope plugins may not work usably in Premiere Pro....... which really grinds my gears......
Actually, we work hand in hand with plug-ins developers in the realm of compatibility. Some of these plug-ins companies are quite small so you have to pay close attention to precisely what is supported for the host application. In some cases, it takes some time to catch up to the latest versions.
why are Adobe not calling out the plugins as not usable? What about the plugin manufacturers themselves? I can't see this being a performance issue on my end...frustrating!
That's actually up to the plug-ins manufacturers. Please communicate with them accordingly regarding compatibility. Sorry for any confusion this may have brought about.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Another SLOW Lightroom Thread

Just another thread to document the major issues I'm having with Lightroom 4.
System: Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel i7-720QM, 8 GB RAM 1333MHz, 500 GB HD, ATI Radeon 4670 1GB with Wacom Intuos 5
Working in the Develop module has been completely unacceptable and is costing me hours of editing time and frustrating, which means its costing me money.  Everything from navigating between photos to adjusting slider bars seems to be laggy to put it lightly.  After using the Adjustment Brush, making universal changes is taking forever!  And if I got back to create an additional adjustment with the Adjustment Brush tool, it's almost not even worth it because it is so slow to respond.  Similar to the slow downs after using the Adjustment Brush tool, any changes made after making any adjustments in the Lens Correction tab seem to be super sluggish as well.  Oh top of it all, my computer is running extremely hot when running Lightroom, which ever occured in past versions!
I've tried several suggestions that I've seen in forums, such as creating a fresh Catalog and importing the files directly into that new Catalog, hiding the Histogram to free up resources, reducing the size of the Catalog to just the working set I'm currently working on... I've now installed the 4.1 RC and do seem to see some increase in response with the sliders within the develop module, but once I start using the Adjustment Brush and Lens Correction, it seems to be back to it's sluggish self.  And after editing a few photos, the entire program is crawling.
I think it's great that Adobe has such a strong following that people seem to be so understanding and patient about these issues, but find it unacceptable that such an unpolished release was issued to the public.  If the issues are eventually remedied I will be fully on board with Lightroom, once again, because I do think that the revamped develop module has been a major improvement for editing and workflow, but all those improvements are pretty useless when I'm losing so many hours battling with performance issues.

No changes, nothing at all, in actual fact I don't even have a PC connected to this broadband line it's purely for the games consoles. I have a separate broadband line for my home office etc.
Just had a call from BT India, with out wishing to sound derogatory I might as well talk to my pet cat. Apparently they were ringing to see if the problem had been resolved, I only reported it 2 hrs ago.

  • Java career advice, now that I've been laid off

After nearly 13 years at the same company (my only job since finishing college), I was laid off. One would think that with such experience, a new job would be easy to find. The problem is that in those 12+ years I've focused on a rather narrow set of Java technologies, mostly core J2SE, with a little bit of EJB & JDBC. Nothing really web based at all. 99% of the job postings I see require experience with web development and/or experience with Spring, Hibernate, Servlets, JSP, Struts, etc... things that I have at best a passing familiarity with.
Does anyone have any advice about how to best overcome this? A crash course of teaching myself these new skills (which I've already begun, starting with Hibernate)? Enroll in a CS graduate school program (part time, so that I can continue in the evening when/if i find a job)? Find some other crash course sessions of these topics? Any advice at all? I'm in San Francisco, for what it's worth.
    Thanks!

Most companies are looking for competence. I wouldn't let buzzwords in the job postings put me off. Just apply for the jobs. And how hard are these technologies you mention. I promise to be an expert in any XXX in a week and in a month I'll outprogram people who have spent years toiling away with XXX and they come to me for advice. And if I can so can you. -:)
Another more important question is whether you really would want to spend the next decade with XXX? To me it would be hellishly boring. If I were you I would apply for jobs directly to the technical departments of companies I admire. Stick with core Java. This is where the challenges are and the fun takes place. Leave XXX to the monkeys.

  • Yet another DVD Playback thread...

Gone through every other thread related to DVD playback issues when you do a forum search for "dvd playback". If I try to play a DVD, the disc spins for quite a while while (S)MPlayer just sits there and eventually crashes. Tried this with multiple DVDs, updated all my software...here's the log. Sort of looks like hardware issues to me.  Do you know that the drive works (i.e. tested in another OS, or it used to work and just stopped?)
Did you try just mplayer dvd://  ?  That's quite a long options list you've got there.
What kind of drive is it?

  • Plan to move photos from one drive to another - Need advice

My C: drive is almost out of space. I want to move my photos to a new internal hard drive.
In PSA SE 3, I've already tagged these photos. I want to know what's the easiest way to move my photos from one drive to another without losing my tags. Will "Reconnect Missing Files" find the moved files on a new drive if I keep my path the same (except for the drive letter)? Or will I have to reconnect the files manually one-at-a-time?
    Any advice is appreciated!

I might. I think I have MySQL installed at home. I have MS SQL Server at work. Is the application data file Access-compatible? I'd love to be able to just hack the underlying data store.

  • Another T60 help thread

Ok, so I have quite a few issues.
    I have:
    -T60 200749U - Windows 7- 2GB - Dual HDD
-Advanced Dock 2503 - ATI Radeon HD 5450
Now lets tend to the most annoying issue I have.
Ever since I got this thing the headphone jack has not worked properly.
It didn't work when I ran XP, it worked when I ran Vista but only when the switch in the lower left was to the left., now on 7  Ethernet and Headphone ports don't work.
Anyhelp with this would make me a happy guy.
The next thing has to do with my Dock situation.
I got my Advanced dock and installed a ATI graphics card with it.
Now I installed the driver for the card and Catalyst control center changed the settings in BIOS.
All is working fine, I have aero and great picture when plugged into the dock.
Now my issue is that when I am not on the dock I am stuck with Windows basic (which I hate) because I don't have the drivers for the X1300.
Before I installed catalyst and the drivers for the dock's card I had aero running just fine.
I found and tried installing the legacy drivers for the X1300 but that has an old version of Catalyst that doesn't support my Dock's card.
VGA out on the laptop itself no longer works either.
I have a desktop gadget that recognizes the GPU but windows doesn't
I have tried everything I can think of and after 5 system restores and a ton of searching I have had no luck.
    Please help.
I had another question but forgot it.
Anyhelp is appreciated and thanks to you all in advance.

  • Another BORIS MISSING thread.

    Hi,
I've been looking at several BORIS MISSING threads trying to find a solution, and have not found a good one yet. Here is my problem:
Originally purchased FCP studio 5.0 in 2005. Noticed Boris was missing (never needed it) about a year ago and never figured out how to get it back (didn't try very hard). Upgraded to 5.1.4 about two weeks ago, and it's still missing. Trashing preferences doesn't help.
    The specifics:
Boris does not show up under generators in effects tab or in viewer generators popup.
BorisFX folder is in Application Support as it should be, and all necessary files (as mentioned in other threads) seem to be in place. What's more, if I create another account, BORIS WORKS. But I don't want to login to another account every time I want to use Boris.
Something I've noticed: I seem to recall that Boris file icons in Application Support>BorisFX were some sort of "Kind: After Effects" Icons prior to my 5.1.4 install (also prior to my recent purchase of Photoshop). Now they are either "Kind: Unix Executable File" or (under BorisFX>Gradient Styles) "Kind: Adobe Photoshop Gradient File". Would this have anything to do with my problem? Anyone have any ideas for me?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    1. Open your system Plugins folder (not your own FCP User Data folder):
Macintosh Hard Drive/Library/Applications Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins
    2. Copy these folders to the desktop:
    Text Scrambler.bundle
    Title 3D.bundle
    Title Crawl.bundle
    Vector Shape.bundle
    3. Change the extensions on all four desktop files from bundle to .plugin
This requires password authentication. They will become blank icons.
    4. Delete the original .bundle folders from the Plugins folder
    7. Move the desktop .plugin files to the Plugins folder
    8. Launch FCP and they should now show up under the "Boris"
    generators category

  • Another Magnetic Case Thread

So, I see that several people have asked about the cases with magnets causing problems. The resounding answer seems to be no, so I'm looking for some theories on what might be going on with my touch. I got a leather case that has two magnets on the side to keep it closed, instead of the bottom (as most of the threads seem to deal with). I put my touch in there and a few hours later, it wouldn't come on. I had to reset or whatever they call it when you hold down both the power and home buttons. This happened several times. I charged it, did all the "r"s except a complete restore and it seemed to be ok. That was late at night, so I only tested it for a few minutes, then went to bed. The next morning (this past Tuesday), I was trying to use it and kept having similar problems, only now I would sometimes just get a white screen. I took the case off and left it off. It is now late Wednesday night. I have had my touch out of the case with the magnet for about a day and a half and I haven't had one problem. I didn't do anymore resetting, restoring, etc. It just started functioning normally again. I plan to test the case again tomorrow, but wonder if there are any thoughts on what might have happened. I wondered if maybe the magnet near the WiFi was causing problems in it which was affecting my touch. So, thanks for the input and I'll make a note when I finally get it back in the magnetic case!

AAPL, I saw your response in another thread speaking of how you showed people at college things that magnets did not mess up, but supposedly were supposed to, such as floppy disks, etc. Based on that, I was hoping that you would catch this thread and offer some insight. I'm afraid that I still believe that the magnets are the trouble makers. I know that on the DLO case, the magnets are at the bottom. My case is not the same. The magnets are on the left side at the top and bottom. In addition to my husband putting the case and having the exact same problem, I tried it again. After seeing your response, I put the case back on. FIVE minutes later, I had the exact same problems. iPod wouldn't come on. When it did, I had a flickering screen, then the Apple. I haven't had any trouble with my touch since I took it out of the case Tuesday morning. Now, on Thursday morning, I tried the case again, and voila! Problems. And as soon as I took it out of the case and restarted it, it began functioning as normal. How do you explain that? (That isn't supposed to sound smart alec, but truly curious!) The rest of the case is just leather. I know that isn't causing problems. To me, it is obviously something about the case, so I think that it must be the magnets. Thanks!

  • Yet another iPhone WiFi thread - cannot connect to some OPEN networks

I make no apologies in starting another thread about iPhone WiFi connectivity. Judging by the number of references to WiFi issues in this forum, as well as on the Internet generally, this is a big issue with many users and yet there seems very little acknowledgement by Apple that there is problem.
In my case I have a first generation iPhone which works well on most WiFi networks, both open and closed, including my secured network at home, but cannot connect properly with some open networks. I have had this problem while using 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1 firmware.
Sometimes I get the "Cannot Connect ..." message and sometimes I am able to connect and obtain a good signal and see an IP Address and a Subnet mask, but no Router or DNS address.
I'll repeat that I talking about open networks, so there is no password issue. In one local cafe, I am unable to connect to a network that I used to be able to connect to routinely. I have talked to the owner, who is another Mac and iPhone user and he assures me that he has not changed any router settings.
Can anyone offer any suggestions beyond the usual re-setting and re-booting options? Is there something about iPhone MAC addresses or the WiFi signal that certain routers don't like?
    Simon

This is not a solution to your problems but:
1- Expecting someone from Apple to respond here is a vain hope. This is a discussion forum for users and you can only expect responses from users. Talk to Apple tech support if you want a response from them.
2- I saw an item on an iPhone blog page somewhere yesterday saying that Apple was now replacing iPhones with this issue if you took it to an Apple store. Don't know if it's true but it also had a workaround that you could use for your own home network if you were having problems—and I am—and that workaround basically worked for me.
I turned wi-fi off on the phone and opened Airport Utility on my iMac. I turned wi-fi security OFF and then tried to connect. I actually got a connection straight away, and I noted down the IP addresses and subnet mask data from the DHCP screen in the iPhone's wi-fi network info screen. I then restored wi-fi security on my iMac. Of course that restarts the router and I lost my connection and when it started up again, the IP addresses had changed but the subnet mask had not. I swapped to the Static screen instead of the DHCP screen and edited all 3 IP addresses. That got me my connection back and it has continued to work throughout today. That's the best result I've had so far.
It seems to me that my iPhone has problems picking up the network data from my home network and I don't know why that is. I was at a friend's last night and tried to connect to his system and it connected straight away. I assume there's something about my settings which is problematic but I don't know what it is but at least now I have a workaround.
It's possible that something similar is going on for you with the public networks you're having problems with but, unfortunately, the workaround I tried won't work for you in a public network so that's probably not much help.
You could try taking your phone to an Apple Store and seeing if they exchange it. The blog I read suggested the magic words were "hardware problem". In my case I don't think it's a hardware problem but it may be in yours.

  • Career Advice for SAP BI veteran

    Hi SAP Community!
I'm Mike. I had been an SAP consultant for about 13 years. The last 3 years, have not been working as SAP consultant.
    My experience:
    SAP Basis 5 years .
    SAP BPS 2 years.
    SAP BW / BI / BI-IP  6 years.
I have never been a team leader. Always a consultant. a Doer.
I am now in my late 30's. I would like to progress/ transition into a more suitable position.
I have attained my PMP certification 2 years ago. But, as said, no management experience.
In the last 3 years when I was out of the scene, I was doing all kinds of low wage jobs. It started with the financial crisis.
Back then, not many projects were available. What made worse was SAP BI-IP had a replacement of sorts : BPC, BO and BI Accelerator.
I had given up SAP BI for the last 3 years. Now, I want to be back into SAP line. Outside of SAP line, I feel like a loser.
I am not sure if I should go for SAP BO training that would cost me a bomb as its again all the technical details to learn.
I feel that I am too old to keep repeating learning technical things that keep changing. i have the ability to keep learning. I have proven this in my career. But I like to have a career using my SAP experience and use my PMP.
I would like your kind advice how to make my next career move. What would you recommend me to do?
Thanks for reading. Hope to hear from you.
    Best regards
      Michael

    Hello,
I don´t have any special advice, since you´re much older and more experienced and I cannot tell how to put your skills into the best use. But.. if you would like to start with something new, "cutting edge", like BO a blog of mine could help. Check it here: /people/otto.gold/blog/2010/07/20/how-to-play-around-with-sap-and-crystal-reports-trial-versions-only Using the blog you should be able to recreate a training landscape (and it should not take you like weeks since you have "some" basis experience) and you can give it a try for free before you decide to go this way or not. If nothing else, I could spare you some money.
Wish you all the needed luck,
    regards Otto

  • SAP Career Advice for newbie

I've been working for this a company a year now and feel stuck. Started as functional in HR module - did this for about 6 months and learned how to write functional specs. This position ended. Was retrained in ABAP for two months. Now moving into a technofuctional support role in SD module. My problem is that I'm having a hard time getting noticed and no work is being given to me. My manager seems confused as to what my actual role/activities/tasks should be.
For those with experience or maybe have dealt with this previously. What are some things that I should do to get work, get noticed, and learn on grow at this position? Should I ask for work? Should I ask to shadow? I need some direction. Your advice is greatly apprieciated.

If I were you, I would spend all your free time here on SDN. There are so many rescources you can explore... If you couldn´t spare a minute because of tons of work to do, you would get stuck as well. At the moment you may have the same problem as me - I am too young for a responsibility. Use this time carefully and increase your value for your employer. And think about it this way: You pay me, don´t give me work and I increase my value, but probably... you won´t ever venefit from my increased value:)) Prepare your career for a new employer. Decide what career you want to pursue, work hard and next change the job.
    Regards, Otto
