Another device using network message

I routinely have a pop up window that informs me:
"Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address.
Try connecting again later. If you continue to have problems, change the IP address of this computer or the IP address of the other device. Contact the network administrator if you need more information."
No other devices of mine use my wireless connection. I have long suspected someone of stealing my wireless service in order to cop my router's IP address. Could this message be indicative of someone outside my building using my wireless service?

Possibly. Do you secure your wireless network with WPA2 and use a strong password? Do you change this password periodically? If you can say "yes" to both, the chances of someone connecting to your network is extremely unlikely.
The other reason, you may be getting this warning is that the DHCP services, either on the server (router) or the wireless clients themselves are not configured properly. DHCP is used on the local network to assign Private IP addresses to network clients. These addresses, by default, are dynamic and will change on a set time period. If a network client is not configured properly it can "refuse" to accept a new address and can potentially have the same address that the DHCP server hands out to another device ... and thus, the warning message.

    Hi,
    I keep getting a randomly timed message that another device is using my network even when there are none of my other network devices turned on. Setup is WPA2 Personal network and it is passworded.
    Whatever it is seems to pick up IP addresses that I've previously listed as servers in Finder/Go/Connect. These were set up to facilitate file transfers to iPhone but I've made sure that the iPhones were turned off and I still get the message. I've tried clearing these server addresses out of Finder but they reappear on the list when I refresh the menu option: Finder/Go/Connect To Server.
    Does this mean that someone is hacking my network and potentially using my internet?

    I have been getting this message since installing Yosemite. All I have done to correct is reset my Airport extreme. We have 2 iPhones, an iPad, and aMacBook Pro. I presume I have to change the IP address on my Desktop computer (iMac). I haven 't a clue how to do or what to change the address to.

    I too am puzzled that both Apple and AT&T were apparently unaware that you had a modem, not a gateway.
    If you had a gateway (which is a combination modem/router on one chassis with 3-4 ethernet ports), and you were configuring your AirPort Extreme to work with that device, then in that case, the correct setting would have been "bridge mode".

    This is the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme when it is connected to a simple modem (one ethernet port). Since your modem only delivers one IP address, you must have the AirPort Extreme configured to "share that IP address" in order to have the device furnish separate IP addresses to each of your devices on the network.
    With the AirPort Extreme in bridge mode, it was passing through the single IP address from the modem and only one device on your network was receiving that IP address. That's why you saw conflicts about another device using the same address.
    Sounds like you are all set. This should work very well for you.

    You cannot "send" an app via iCloud, the purchase is saved but only accesible to the same AppleID...app purchases are tied to a specific AppleID.  If you want one purchased under your brother's ID you must purchase under your ID.

    Today, out of the blue, I got a dialogue box telling me "Another device on the network is using your computers IP address (71.142.xx.xxx) Try connecting again later." I'm using an Airport Express 802.11n and it's been working fine since I got it. It tells me I need to change the IP address of my computer. I've tried everything I know how to do, and would like to just delete everything and start from scratch, but can't figure out how to do it.

    OK, I fixed it, and thought I'd say what I did in case anyone else is having the same problem. I found that you reset the Airport Express by unplugging it and pushing a small button on the side with an unfolded paper clip, while plugging it back in while you hold the button in until the light on the AE flashes yellow. From that point on it's just a matter of setting up a brand new wireless network from scratch. I'm up and running again.

    Most likely, you're getting a network address from your router. The address assignment ("lease") expires, and has to be renewed, after a certain amount of time, which might be one hour or one day. The lease expired without being renewed because the device was offline at the time. Meanwhile, the address was leased to another device on the network. When the first device comes back online, it still has the address that's now also leased to the second device. Depending on what kind of router you have, the conflict may resolve itself automatically. If not, then from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
    If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the TCP/IP tab. Now look at the menu labeled Configure IPv4. If the selection in that menu is Using DHCP, click the button labeled Renew DHCP Lease. Test.
    Less likely, you have a network address that you assigned yourself, and another device is assigning itself the same address. In that case, the selection in the Configure IPv4 menu will be either Manually or Using DHCP with manual address. This kind of conflict won't be resolved automatically. You have the following options to resolve it:
    Change the menu selection to Using DHCP.
    Change the manually-assigned address to one that isn't being used by another device.
    Change the address of the other device.  
    Which of these options you should choose depends on the details of why you're using a static IP address. Any change you make to the network settings must be applied before it takes effect. To do that, click OK and then Apply.

    you could also just cache your lookup table with something like Oracle Coherence and than try to ensure that all changes to the lookup go through Coherence, so that you won't need to do notification from the db up to the application. the application and the lookup data management tool would be using the data grid for management of the lookup table data, and the data grid (coherence) would persist the lookup data changes back to the db.

    Everytime i log in to another computer or mobile device, all the previous chats will pops out when the user comes online. I've already disabled the history and cleared the chat logs but problem still persist.
    I was thinking the logs were stored in the skype server. Is there a way to disable/remove the logs from popping out in the future?

  • Safari of my Macbook (on WiFi) suddenly fails to connect to the Internet.  A popup window message says another device on the network is using my computer's IP address.

    But then there was still no Internet access even after I have disconnected all other home computers (a total of four including the Macbook and one iMac desktop.  For simplicity, I shall categorically called them Mac hereafter unless otherwise specified.  The Macs are operating on WiFi.). 
    The window message recommends changing the IP of either the Macs or the other device.  The latter of course does not apply because I don't think the other device is one of my computers. 
    My questions:  
    (1) Why did that happen suddenly since the Mac and other computers on the WiFi was working fine in the morning (as well as days before) and then all of a sudden an unknown device is using my computer's IP?  As far as I (we) can remember, we did not do any thing unusual this morning nor had we downloaded any special programs.
    (2) How do I change the IP since it requires Internet acess to do it and since I can't access the Internet on the Mac? 
    (3) I am almost sure the problem is not caused by the Internet service because when I connected the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to an old Windows PC, I got Internet via Internet Explorer.  [I am actually sending out this message via IE on my PC.]  However, when I cennected the Ethernet line from the modem to a WiFi router (Airport Extreme) and then connect the router and the old PC, I did not get Internet on either the Mac nor the PC.  Similarly, there was no Internet on both Mac and PC If I connect Ethernet only between the modem and the router but not between PC and router.  So, the question is whether a third unknown party has gotten hold of my Mac IP address and is trying to break into the Mac?  Can it steal my personal info?
    (4)  How can I repair the Mac now and prevent future recurrences?  Is changing the IP address the way to do it?  (But like I said before I had tried but could not change the IP because I did not have Internet access on the Mac.  Is there an alternative method?) 
    (5) I wonder if a computer's IP address remains constant if you don't change it.  The reason I am asking this question is because the aforesaid window message on the Macbook--not sure about the iMac--shows a different IP address--a few numerical digits were changed--almost every time it pops up following every failure trial of mine to access the Internet.  Was the Macbook trying to change the IP for me or was there some thing not right?

    This message/problem was occuring intermittently for me in a household with two MacBooks accessing one Airport extreme.  Rebooting the modem and router would only temporarily fix the issue for me, so I spoke with a friend who works for Apple and it seems that the Airport Extreme settings were at the root of our particular issue.
    The router(Airport Extreme) recieves only one IP address from the modem and in order to allow it to share the IP address with two computers at once, the solution in my case was through:
    Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility>Manual Setup>Internet
    under Internet Connection- Select "share a public IP address"
    under NAT, check the box for "enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol"
       (this will allow the sharing of one public IP address with multiple devices)
    if this is a new setting, then click "Update" and the Airport Extreme should reboot itself with new settings applied.
    When all else is working properly, this is a satisfactory solution in my case.

    That may be what is a fairly common problem of 2 devices mistakenly assigned the same address. Try shutting off all of the devices connected to your router, reboot the router and then the devices connected to it.

    In the last two days I have received this message on my iMac:  "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address..."  What should I do?

    There are a lot of ways this can occur, but most common is from having devices setup and on a router for a long time and then adding devices and cycling the router.  Devices that do not power cycle retain the old IP address.  You can shutdown all devices, then power down the router, disconnect power so it is truly shut down, wait about five minutes then power up the router.  Give it a couple minutes to capture a new IP address, then one-by-one power up the devices giving each a couple minutes to capture an address.  That should then have all devices with unique addresses.
