Another External Auth Question

We have implemented a custom login page
('borrowed' from http://technet.oracle.com:89/ubb/Forum83/HTML/000206.html) and authenticate externally
to NT PDC. I am required to add an additional field "PIN" to the login page. I
will handle validating the PIN in my custom code. What I need to know is which packages do I need to touch to add this field? Also, can I control the message back to the user -
ie 'invalid pin' vs 'invalid password'?

Brian,
You should probably post the login form to a procedure that you write that will process the PIN. Then that procedure should call the ls_login procedure, with only the parameters that it takes, excluding the PIN.
If the first step determined that the PIN was wrong, then you should not call the ls_login, but instead redirect back to the custom login page, passing an error code for the bad PIN. Since you are writing your own custom error code, you can display any text you want, corresponding to a bad_pin error code.
Note that this approach assumes that your procedure is in the login server schema also.

  • Another external drive question

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've partitioned my WD 500 GB firewire 800 external drive into three partitions. My intention was to obtain a bootable backup in the first partition (100 GB) and have the other two as supplemental strorage for future use (200 GB and the remaining approx. 165 GB). After performing an immediate backup of the Macintosh HD into the first partition, I read that a "duplicate", not "backup" was required for boot purposes.
I'd really appreciate some suggestions here from those with more experience in these matters. My internal 500 GB HD has approximately 28 GB of used capacity currently (this will grow, of course, over time). Should I have created a partition for a bootable start up and "duplicated" the internal HD? Then, should I use a second partition for normal backups? What size should these partitions be configured to allow for maximum future storage, without pushing the limits on the backup/startup partitions? And finally, what are the steps to re-configure the external to achieve my desired intentions?
This is a lot of question, but I certainly appreciate the guidance provided me thus far in my early days of Mac enjoyment. Thanks.

Hello! Sounds like you have thought it out well. All you need now is to clone your main drive so it will be bootable. You can do that using CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or you can use the Apple Disk Utility you already have. A lot of people use SuperDuper and others swear by some of the others. Below are listed Kappy's steps to do it using the disk utility. I use several bootable backups just for peace of mind. I generally clone to one and then the other so if something happens during the cloning (such as a power outage) I'll still have a drive that works. I usually make a clone about once a month and then backup any important documents every day to a flash drive, cd/dvd, or another hard drive volume. Once you make a clone you should always boot from it to make sure it's booting ok. Sometimes a clone will fail to boot. I also HIGHLY recommend obtaining and using DISKWARRIOR. Diskwarrior is the "gold standard" for disk drive directory maintenance which is the leading cause of hard drive problems. Using DW about once a month or after any force shutdown, forced re-start, or power outage will head off most disk problems. Tom
Kappy's Steps to Produce a bootable clone
    Prep external FW drive:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • I know, another external monitor question...

Can someone please point me to a link or suggest some keywords to find a solution for adding an external video monitor? Apparently I'm not using the right ones. FCP manual says to use a "3rd party video interface". I would like to monitor my video on an NTSC TV (likely an economical 15" flat panel) primarily to look for interlace issues before burning. I need to know what cheaper options are available for my Mac Pro with a spare DVI output and plenty of card slots. I do not want to run it through a camcorder via firewire, in an effort to keep my workspace clean.

It all depends on what video formats you'll be working with. For example, you can use Firewire through a DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter) to monitor and of the DV25 formats on an external NTSC monitor.
But for most other (higher) formats, you will need a specialized capture card such as those offered by AJA and BlackMagic Designs (Decklink).
If you're concerned about interlacing issues and being able to spot them as you edit, use a CRT TV monitor - not a progressive scan monitor (LCD or plasma).

  • Another external HD question.

...or maybe a couple. I've just added a WD 500GB My Book external drive via firewire, but I want to use it as an extension or as a primary drive. My built in drive is nearly full, and I want to move everything over, but I want each user profile to remain separate. I haven't seen any similar topic in the searches I've tried. I learned how to move my iTunes over to it, but my music is accessible from my wife's profile, and my 11 year olds. How can everything be kept separate as it is now on the built in drive? I just don't want music, pictures, or important files to be accidently goofed with or deleted. Plus, it that something that partitioning the drive will make a difference with?

Since you seem to have the data, accounts and system as a whole set up the way you want it on the internal drive at the present, the easiest way to switch to using your new external as the primary drive is simply 'clone' the entire internal drive to the external, and then set the external as the startup drive. That way you'll simply be switching to booting and running off the external and nothing else will be changed.
To do this, first ensure that the external is correctly partitioned and formatted. For a G4 mini it needs to be Apple Partition Map partitioned, for an Intel mini it should be GUID partitioned. In either case formatting should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The drive can be set up correctly using Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) if it is not already. Next, download a copy of SuperDuper! from http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html (it's free to use for basic functions such as a complete clone as in this case) and when you run it, select the internal drive as the source and the external as the target. Once the clone is complete, open the Startup Disk preference pane, and select the external drive.
After this, as long as the external is connected and powered, the system will boot from it and you'll have all the extra space available with your accounts etc all as there were.
You might then consider using the internal drive to maintain a viable copy of MacOS to use for booting if the external is not available.

  • [Question!!] How to satisfied security status after External Auth. ??

    Situation :
I want to do Post Issuance functions on card , the card has personalized , and card
status is been set to 'Secured'.
    Card Status :
The Card is in secured status when has perso. from card manufacturer.
    First : External auth.
External auth. is OK and response no error.
    (APDU 's P1 set to '0x03')
Second: Try to delete existd applet(ex:VSDC applet) from card.
According to the Card Spec. , APDUs after secured channel has opened must
add MAC and encipher , so use first step 's C-MAC value as initial value to caculate
new MAC and do encipher , then send command to IC Card , it return SW in '0x6982'
    Questions :
Why it return 'Security level not satisfied' after pass the card ext. auth. ?
Do I get error in caculate MAC or do Encipher the command ?
If really got the error in my MAC or cipher step , IC Card check it and return '6982' ,
    is it correct ?

  • How to backup external hard drive to another external hard drive using time machine ?

    Hello,
i have an external hard drive which i store all my drum samples and sound library on and files are contantly changing, adding new sounds, deleting old ones etc ..
So my method of back up as of now is to just copy all the edited files and click and drag to the back up disk.
Now, my question is, how do i back up my external hard drive to another external hard drive using time machine ? I read somewhere that you can do this, i cant find the post however. It would be nice to automate the back up process rather than manually finding the files to copy over.
    Thanks in advance !

The question you pose is conditional, in that you should have more than an exact
capacity replacement for a clone, if the drive you are going from (or one going to)
has insufficient free space and that has a bootable clone on the drive; any space
tied up in a partition for Time Machine backup, takes away from the running space
if you should need to run the computer from a clone on the external HDD's other
partition.... Better to have a good capacity of additional reserve unused free space.
Be sure any clone copy that you hope to use as a re-close, that each in turn is tested
after a clone operation. Also consider using each running system's Disk utility and
have First Aid 'repair disk permissions'. Preparation of a new drive or even an old
drive that may have questionable artifacts or errors on it, should be reformatted. To
even go as far as Secure Erase (overwrite) at least one-pass before reformatting it
    again, could help.
However, I'm not sure if the drives and situation you are looking at would necessarily
be a good match. It could work, but you'd need a reasonable size partition or hard
disk drive for a system. Snow Leopard and all its associated applications, can do
OK in a 100GB HDD. (My computers have more storage capacity than is used; so
for mine to have 60% free space, is good.) Virtual Memory is drive space used by
OS X, that can be a substantial amount for swap and temp files. Some applications
make duplicates of works-in-progress, for each change in an open file; that adds up.
{This question (& my reply) should've been in their own thread & not at the end
    of one that is nearly three months old, + marked 'solved' by the original poster.}
So I guess I don't have a direct answer to your question; having just returned from
a few hundred miles and automobile issues, too. I'm not really thinking on-topic...
The clone should be on its own separate drive, and up to 3TB drive dedicated to
Time Machine may be overkill, however that software will consume old backups first
when it uses up all the space. Or usually that is what happens in TM backups. If
that isn't happening, there may an issue in how Time Machine is set up.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Time capsule full; can I daisychain another external HD to it?

Backups started failing yesterday because there is not enough room in TC. I connected another external HD to TC. The external HD is visible when I select TC under "Shared". However, the external HD is not available when I try to configure Time Machine; only TC is visible.
Is there a way to configure Time Machine so that it uses hard drives daisychained to TC, if TC runs out of room?
    TIA!

As Tesserax says, Time Machine won't "span" from your Time Capsule to an external HD connected to it.
But it can back up to a connected USB drive instead of the TC's internal disk. See #Q2 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
The first backup there will be a full one, and the old ones won't be automatically deleted, but you'll still be able to access them via the Browse option. See #17 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
However, something else may be going on here. How much data is on your Mac (the internal HD and any other HDs that are being backed-up), and how large is your TC's internal HD?

  • How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus)?  WD drive was improperly ejected and Finder no longer recognizes it.  Tried fixing with Disk Utility but failed.

How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport 2T) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus 2T)?  WD drive was improperly ejected (although we did tell it to eject) and now Finder no longer recognizes it.   Using MacBook Pro and I just upgraded to Yosemite before this happened. Was told at Apple Store to use Disk Utility to repartition, but it failed.  It says to backup files and restore.  But how do I backup files?  Or would appreciate any other suggestions to repair drive.

You may drag & drop between external hds.
    Should you run into trouble.
Take the exernal drive appart.  Take out the harddrive.  Try reading the data via a usb adapter. Put a household finan on the hd.

  • I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. I want to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere? Also is it worth just buying another external HD to back up

I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. However, it is not backed up, so I need a solution to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • Why can't I select another external editor?

    iPhoto 11.
How do I select another external editor in iPhoto 9.2.1? I have Aperture, Pixelmator and PSE installed but only PSE comes up in the selection box under "Advanced".

I'm a little reluctant to dedicate my use to it because Apple appears to be dropping support for their pro-apps, Mac Pro's and so on.
I wouldn't believe everything you read on the Internet.
, I don't like the duplicates, faces, keywords being divorced from the photo and more annoyances than I care to enumerate.
I'm not sure what duplicates your referring to. If you mean when sending to an External editor, well stacking will hide that in Aperture. Faces can be turned off in Aperture (not in iPhoto) and keywords have always been stored in the database not the photos in every iteration of iPhoto. They can only be written to the file on export. Nothing different there.

I am using timemachine on it along with alot of pictures and videos on the first external harddrive and i have another external harddrive beside it that i want it to backup the same info the first one has.
I hope this makes sense to yall out there please help.

I suggest that you actually make a different type of backup - a bootable clone backup:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
