Another RMAN-06023 Error

Hi all !
I'm quite new to RMAN and facing some problem here. DB is 10gR2 and filesystem has crashed a couple of weeks ago.

  • Duplicate database command fails with RMAN-06023

    Hello,
    I am trying to test out the duplicate database command in RMAN and am running into some issues.
    I did a backup of my test database, copied the backup files to a second server, and now I'm trying to run the duplicate command and I get RMAN-06023 errors for all of my datafiles.
    I did crosschecks on my backupsets and they showed as available. They are in the same location on the new server, with the same permissions. There are no recent archived logs, as this is a very quiet environment.
    My commands and output (edited slightly) were as follows:
    RMAN> run {

    Hi,
    Where is you RMAN catalog? I think you forgot to connect to it.
    To duplicate a database check that folowing applies:
    1-the auxiliary instance is mounted
    2-the listener for the auxiliary db is up
    3-the backup pieces that RMAN is going to restore ARE AVAILABLE on the
    secondary/auxilary server with SAME NAME the have on the primary server (you can use NFS to avoid the copy of the pieces from primary to auxuliary box)
    Remember to be conected to both: target and auxiliary db.
    I have extracted the folowing lines from an RMAN script I used to create an standby database with the DUPLICATE command (the RMAN catalog was in the primary db controlfile, and the command was run on the primary server:
    $ rman target / nocatalog auxiliary sys/pwd@standbycard log=crCARD.log
    RMAN> duplicate target database for standby nofilenamecheck dorecover;
    I hope this helps

    Hi,
    How can I manage that ALL files, ALL pieces, Controlfile, SPfile etc. etc. is available in ONE backup-file.The short awnser is: You cannot do that.
    RMAN divides some files types in different backupset.
    This is a rule:
    Datafiles use your own Backupset
    Controlfile and SPFILE use your own Backupset
    ARCHIVELOG use your own Backupset
    For each BACKUPSET you can have many Backuppiece (i.e files on disk). As rule you always have relationship of one (Backupset) to one or more (Backuppiece).
    So, respecting the rule above you can do following:
    You can use the option FILESPERSET to keep all datafiles in same backuppiece. (In my case below 200 datafiles will be in same backuppiece)
    {code}
    RMAN> backup database tag='my_backup' filesperset 200 include current controlfile ;

  • RMAN Restore Error - media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1 seq 7

    Im using RMAN to copy a database to another server. The new server is IDENTICAL to the old one. By identical I mean it has the same sever name, ip address, operating system, Oracle version and directory structure.
    The new server already has the instance created, (same name as the old server instance, paths etc)
    The backup files have been manually restored to the new server, same locations as they were on the old one. ( RMAN did an automatic controlfile backup and also the archivelogs on the old server ).
    Ive restored the control file on the new server from the RMAN backup pieces.
    Ive catalogued the RMAN backup pieces on the new server.
    I know the last sequence available in the archivelogs backup by running on the new server :
    list backup of archivelog all;

    So far its all going swimmingly well.
    Now I want to restore the datafiles and recover. So I ran :
    RMAN run { restore database; recover database; alter database open resetlogs; }
    This gave me the output below which goes great but I get a final error, I think the error is because its looking for an archive log thats not in the backup set, but it should be. However, I think SCN 560851 is for a log that hadnt been created yet on the old server when the backup was ran ?
    How do I address resolving the error ? Its worth pointing out log, "archive log filename=C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\SAT\ARCHIVELOG
    \2011_05_11\O1_MF_1_6_6WOK1X4W_.ARC recid=10 stamp=750881741" isnt on the old server either which is why its not in the backup set.
    I can do a alter database open reset logs but Id prefer to know why its failing.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    You need to do incomplete recovery i.e. to ask RMAN to restore/recover to some specific point in time. This is usually done with some UNTIL clause or SET UNTIL statement. Example in your case:
    SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 7;See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14194/rcmsynta065.htm#RCMRF160.

    I am not able to restore spfile from rman backup ;;;

    Hi,
    I would like to know few things
    1. How are you setting the db_name ? you can set db_id at RMAN, how are you setting the db_name ?
    2. Do you have any default init file at default location ? if yes, is the db_name parameter set correctly in that file ?
    Since spfile is yet to be restored, you must set the db_name parameter correctly before you start spfile restore.This can be done with init file at default location which can even contain just one paremeter i.e db_name.

  • RMAN Clone Errors

    Hello,
    We use Commvault for our backup software. I can successfully clone one application's PROD instance on server1 to TEST on server2.
    However, for another application, attempting the same process of cloning the app's PROD instance on server1 to TEST on server2, I'm getting RMAN errors.
    The prod database is ISLP and test database is ISLT. I've set the parameters:
    o     alter system set db_file_name_convert = '/u02/oradata/ISLP', '/u02/oradata/ISLT'
    o     alter system set log_file_name_convert= '/u01/oradata/ISLP', '/data/oracle/ISLT'
    Again the destination is on a second server.
    The error message I receive is:
    Oracle instance shut down

    I don't understand why RMAN keeps trying to create new redo log files in a directory that is not specified by the log_file_name_convert parameter. I also don't understand why this exact same process works for cloning one applications database but not this application. I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Here is the RMAN script being executed by Commvault.
    Rman Script:

    You haven't defined a log_file_name_convert for /u02/oradata/ISLP/
    Possibly, the database has multiplexed redo log files, one member each in /u01/oradata/ISLP and one member each in /u02/oradata/ISLP.

    anyone can help?

    use format command with backup.
    eg:-
    backup as compressed backupset database format '/u01/db/backup/%d_%I_%s_%T';
    if it is archivelog mode then
    backup as compressed backupset database format '/u01/db/backup/%d_%I_%s_%T' plus archivelog format '/u01/db/backup/%d_%I_%s_%T';
    then copy the backup to the auxiliary instance server.
    then try again the duplicate command.

  • Another RMAN duplicate problem - RAC database to single instance

    Hi,
    I have a problem with the RMAN duplicate procedure and was hoping someone can help.
    I would like to create a duplicate of our production RAC database on a separate, stand-alone, database server on another site. This duplicate will be used for intensive querying by another business unit who I don't want to have access to our production database.
    My procedure goes like this:
    1. Create a disk (not ASM) based backup of the datafiles and any archived redo logs:
    "run {
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup format '/u02/stage/df_t%t_s%s_p%p' database plus archivelog delete input;
    release channel d1;
    2. Tar and scp these files to the same location on the stand-alone database server.
    3. In the meantime, work has been happening on the production database and further archived redo logs have been generated. I don't really care about these logs for the purposes of the duplicate however, I just want to duplicate to the point of the recent backup. To do this, I run the following SQL to determine the sequence number that I should be duplicating up to:
    "select max(sequence#), thread# from v$archived_log where deleted='YES' group by thread#;"
    4. Duplicate the production database to the stand-alone database (all the SQL Net stuff is working).
    "run {
    set until sequence (value returned by above SQL statement);
    duplicate target database to XXX;
    However, my problem arises because I don't know how to handle the fact that there are two threads. I understand that each thread relates to one of the RAC instances, I just don't know which one to specify for the duplicate. We have a database service which the client application connects through, and that service runs on on or other of the instances. Should I just care about the logs from the instance where the service is currently running?
    Am I even approaching this is the correct way?
    I look forward to any help that people may be able to offer.
    Regards,
    Phil

    you can see that something is setting the recovery SCN to 569505448 which higher even then any of the archived logs mentioned above. If I select current_scn from the production database, this gives me 569528258 which is closer to the value which RMAN is expecting to recover to than any of the archived redo logs.
    Can you think what might be causing RMAN to try to recover to this value? and why does it appear to be ignoring the SET UNTIL SEQUENCE command?
    Cheers,
    Phil

    Hi,
    Can you please make sure the restore mechanism you are following is correct or not?
    Mechanics of Restore Operations
    RMAN automates the procedure for restoring files. You do not need to go into the operating system, locate the backup that you want to use, and manually copy files into the appropriate directories. When you issue a RESTORE command, RMAN directs a server session to restore the correct backups to either:
    * The default location, overwriting the files with the same name currently there
    * A new location, which you can specify with the SET NEWNAME command
    To restore a datafile, either mount the database or keep it open and take the datafile to be restored offline. When RMAN performs a restore, it creates the restored files as datafile image copies and records them in the repository.

  • RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile n found to restore

    Hi,
    on 11g R2 , Win 2008, I try to duplicate by RMAN NOCATALOG.
    In init.ora of auxiliary I have :
    init.ora
    db_file_name_convert=('m:\base\OLDDB\data','m:\base\NEWDB\data')
    log_file_name_convert=('m:\base\OLDDB\log', 'm:\base\NEWDB\log') 1- when duplicating RMAN displays :
    set newname for datafile  109 to
    "M:\BASES\OLDDB\DATA\EOIUAPP.DBF";; but for me reverse is expected since M:\BASES\OLDDB\DATA\EOIUAPP.DBF is the ancient/old name.
    2-RMAN displays :
    channel ORA_AUX_DISK_1: restoring datafile 00041 to M:\BASES\OLDDB\DATA\EOIUAPP.DBF But again the datafile should be restored to 'm:\base\NEWDB\data'.
    And also:

    channel ORA_AUX_DISK_1: ORA-19870: error while restoring backup piece \\server\RMAN$\BACKUP\OLDDB\RMAN\FULL\DF_OLDDB_20120909_196_1

    ORA-27040: file create error, unable to create file

    O/S-Error: (OS 3) file path not found. Finally :
    RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile n found to restore For all files.
