Any Great newbie books to learn java - Any Recommendations ???

Hi, my name is Chris and I know a little about web design and I want to learn java but I know nothing about programming and I would like anyone here to recommend a decend book for a complete newbie in programming to be about to get alot of a that book. I am really interested in java right now and if anyone has any great forums to learn also besides this one , that will be great.

Can anyone recommend a book title or two on Learning Java on Mac OS X Tiger? A generic learn-java-book is fine -- it just has to not be Windows-only. ie. the examples or included CD should at least include instructions for running the examples on a JAVA IDE available for other platforms such as Mac OS X (e.g. Eclipse).

Just download eclipse and do sun's java tutorials. They're very well written and cover pretty much anything you need to do with Java.

As for specific book, sorry I can't help you. I personally learned a lot more Java by browsing through the API reference than I did by checking out coding examples. But that might only be because I already had a decent background in programming when I started. If you start Java as your first programming language, then an example and explanation filled book would be really useful. Like I said, sorry about not being able to provide any solid recommendations.
Hope that helps though. Check out those links, they are pretty useful. The tutorial is pretty helpful sometimes, too.

For all the newbies who wants to learn Java

I was a newbie like 4 months ago. i have some skills of OOP in C++ like 2 years back but since then i did'nt took any of programming language courses. I have experience in MSaccess and MYsql. i did my internship Last summer with Tennessee Education Lottery as a Database Analyst. At that time i realized what a Corporate Enviorment looks like. Trust me it was a formal interview and i passed it and they placed me in the IT department to write some scripts for the GUI terminal and at the same time create a Company Security Database. i did completed my project but i had to Learn Mysql. and then i realized Java was getting very popular. alot of people told me in the forums to go Java tutorial but i will not agree to start from the sun tutorial. you can do it only if you have a good or may be medium experience of OOP. it was really tough for me and then this magic guy came on the forum and told me to go on this website if you want to learn Java.

This site is a brilliant site specially the exercise problems and the quizes really attracted me to Java alot and now i came to realize how easy it is to program in Java rather than C++. Java forums have helped me alot in solving those exercise problems (not with the code but with a good explanation) which was very helpful for me. out of my 210 post i guess i have helped 30 people out and the rest of the questions are regarding those exercises. i came to know encapsulation, inheritance and all that stuff. though i am still not very perfect like i am still having trouble with ComparTo thing but it takes more practice. the more you practice the more you learn. so all the newbies if you really want to learn java even if you dont have any experience in OOp this is the site where you need to start. Hope this will definitely help you alot. thanks to all the Senior members navycoder, captain, paulcw, duffy, turingpest and others also who have helped me in the past. without you i would have not achieved the goal of learning java. now my next step is going to be learn GUI programming Swing. looks fun to me. but at the same time i have my final project for this semester to make on ONline Testing program which will have a database, php scripting and html and xml.

When you open the application you will have the opportunity to select software update.
You can also go to the App store and check under Purchases and Updates and if the update still does no appear select Store > Check for unfinished downloads.
Having said all that, please do think carefully before you do upgrade. For a great many users the latest version has been a bitter disaapointment (see various other discussions here), as it has lost considerable functionality in the drive to ensure compatitbility with iOS.

Learning Java SE 7 / Newbie

Dear Java Community,
I'm real life I find that most professional programmers are rather selfish or inpatient personality types, and I'm interested in learning Java, and possibly becoming a good programmer. It's just a personal hobby, and something that's mostly an intellectual pursuit. My question is this, how do you compile a folder filled with Java files ? There are 27 files in this particular folder. Half are .java files. The others are .class files.
I really want to learn how to program, but as I read all these programming textbooks, they're good (conception-ally speaking), and give you nice gold nuggets of information. But I don't know how to bridge what I want, which what I need to learn, in order to accomplish it. I know that don't become a master overnight, and I guess the question should further be, how long will it take me to actually learn to program Java 7 ?
How do I compile all these files ? I downloaded the free source code from Planet Source Code, but I think these are rather old programs, and maybe they're not backwards compatible. Since I can't find anyone with enough patience to teach myself, then I'll just have to teach myself. But I learn best through backwards engineering. I need to know why this does that, and why that does this.
Can someone help ?

Regarding learning java and becoming master.I wil suggest you to step by step.Don't download free code from some site and execute it.First write small program then gradually raise ur level.Within 2 or 3months you will bw confident about java.

The fact that you can receive means you have a valid e mail address, and have established the connection to the incoming server, so all of that works. Since the send does not work, that means your outgoing server is rejecting whatever settings you used formthe outgoing set up. Try them again.
Google your particular isp, and ipad and many times you will find the exact settings needed for your isp. Or tell us here, and soneone else may be on the same isp. Some mail services need you to change a port, or have a unique name for the outgoing server.

You are missing one or more photos - youprobably have a page background that requires a photo which is behind a page with photos on it - all pages must either have a photo or be a color - if you have a gray background it requires a photo - look through the book carefully and be sure to look at the background on any full page photos - you will find one or more missing photos

Is there any way to prevent web.xml from any change after making EAR(WAR)?
One can easily make a change in web.xml and redeploy the application to get the result. Now we want to restrict the web.xml as java class for any change after making EAR(or WAR).
Could some one help me to do this?

Not at development level. We want it after deploying the application on server .
We want to create it (web.xml) at tomcat startup (or in any other web/app server ) before loading any context.
Is there any way to run a simple java class(not servlet) on tomcat startup(before initializing the contexts)?

All media and apps on the device should already be in iTunes on the computer.
If you have forgotten the restrictions passcode, the ONLY option is to restore as new.
Then sync back any media, apps, contacts, etc back to the device.
You can not restore from backup as the restrictions passcode is included in the backup.
