Aperture troubleshoot, no plist file?

Running in to trouble with my library.  Freezing.  Run all the usual first aids, rebuilding etc., and including reinstalling Ap3.4.
Notice that Apple suggests going to Library/preferences folder and deleting com.apple.Aperture.plist.  I don't see that file in that folder.
Could this be a problem?
Thanks for any help.
Patrick

Patrick,
are you really loking at the User Library ~/Library and not the System Library /Library?
In the recent MacOS versions Lion/Mt. Lion the User Library is hidden.
You can reveal it from the Finder's "Go" menu in the main menu bar:
Finder > Go
Then hold down to options-key ⌥, until Library appears in the drop-down menu. Select it and open the Library.
In the window that opens select the "Preferences" folder - you will find the Aperture.plist there. Move it to the Desktop, then try again to launch Aperture.
Removing the preference file will result in reverting all preferences you set using the "Preference" panel to default, also the layout of the GUI and the "recent" file list, but all your "Presets" will not be changed.

  • Some progress,  comparing com.apple.aperture.plist files

    After restoring an old com.apple.Aperture.plist file from a backup on my iDisk with some success in restoring functionality in Full Screen Mode, I am submitting comparisons of some values for both plist values for Leopard (which works very well in Full Screen Mode) and Snow Leopard (which now works somewhat better, miraculously) in Full Screen Mode. Each of these could be used as a starting point to troubleshoot your screen glitch adjustment issues. For those with severe problems, check these out intently. Tonight I will change some of the SL values to be the Leopard values and see what happens. If anyone uses the PropertyListEditor.app and wants to give it a go....make sure you save your present plist on your desktop as com.apple.Aperture.plistold somewhere so that you can restore it to the ~/Library/Preferences directory if you should have some issues:
    fullscreenWhichWIndow>Boolean>checked in Leopard, unchecked in Snow Leopard
    fullSizeJPEGQuality>Number>1 in Leopard, 0.75 in Snow Leopard
    fullscreenScale>Number>0.2 in Leopard, 0.5 in Snow Leopard (.75 in the unworkable version)
    fullscreenFadeMode>Number> does not list this variable in Leopard, 3 in Snow Leopard
    fullScreenSecondaryMode>Number> does not list this variable in Leopard, 4 in Snow Leopard
    fullscreenWhichWindow>Boolean>checked in Leopard, unchecked in Snow Leopard
    fullscreenAvoid>Boolean>does not exist in Leopard, checked in Snow Leopard
    The following plist entries are the same values for each OS but they are Boolean in Leopard and Number type in Snow Leopard.....
    GridViewSet1ShowLabels>Boolean>unchecked in Leopard
    GridViewSet1ShowLabels>Number>0 in Snow Leopard
    GridViewSet2ShowLabels>Boolean>Unchecked in Leopard
    GridViewSet2ShowLabels>Number>0 in Snow Leopard
    GridViewShowProperties>Boolean>checked in Leopard

    You are looking at Aperture's cache in $TMPDIR.
    Usually it is no problem to delete the contents of this cache, if Aperture is not running. But it is suspicious, that the videos have not been removed automatically, after Aperture quit.
    Check the permissions on the $TMPDIR folder, if you are still the owner. If you are not for some reason, reset the ownership to yourself.
    Log off and on to terminate any running processes. Open the Terminal and enter:
    sudo chown -R $UID $TMPDIR..
    You will need to enter your admin password.
    Then test, if Aperture clean the cache on its own, after you relaunch Aperture.
    Otherwise remove the videos yourself after quitting Aperture.

    Léonie
    P.S: Is there any related problem that made you browse the system cache files?

  • Aperture .plist File Is Lost

    I need to reach to my Aperture's .plit file that must be in username/Library/Preferences . But in that folder there is no com.apple.aperture.plist file. I made search by Sotlight but no such file is found. What may be the problem? I have a viewer screen problem, my photos are seen just as a single line so I need to find and erase this .plist file to solve the problem.

    Are you sure you are viewing the user library and not the system library?
    The User Library (username/Library) is hidden by default in Mac OS X (10.7.5).
    To open it in a Finder window use the "Go" menu from the Finder's main menu bar:
    Quit Aperture, if it is running. Log off and on again.
    Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu and hold down the options-key, until "Library" appears in the drop down menu. Select it.
    In the widow that will open, scroll down to "Preferences"
    From the "Preferences" folder  remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist".
    Then try to launch Aperture again.
    I am pretty sure, that the com.apple.Aperture.plist file must be there. If the file is not there, Aperture will recreate it when launching.
    In the rare case, that Aperture cannot create this file, because the user library is not writable,
    Then Aperture will write to $TMPDIR instead.
    Check this temporary directory - you can open it from the Terminal:  Launch the Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and and enter the following line:
          open $TMPDIR
    Hit return. This will open a Finder window. Look for a folder "com.apple.Aperture"
    You can delete its contents.

  • How do you edit the raw.plist file in 10.5.7? Old tricks no longer working.

    I have a Canon PowerShot S50 that I has the samw RAW profile as the Canon PowerShot S60.
    I've successfully added it to the raw.plist file and updated the CodeResources file with a new key via terminal, and now aperture displays the thumbnail, and very briefly the larger 'image' in my second monitor, but then within a second it reverts to 'unsupported file type'.
    Has anyone found a solution to this?
    Someone seems to have found a fix on this forum for a different camera, but I'm still struggling (and I've tried renaming the camera name with and without space/underscores, etc)
    (Why Apple hasn't added some of these cameras by now is beyond me - that such simple additions haven't been made is totally inexplicable.)
    Thanks for any help!

  • What's a .plist file

    Hi,
    What's the meaning of a .plist extension?
    I was looking for information using google, but I couldn't find it.
    Where can I find something to read it?
    Thanks,
    Oleguer

    Oleguer
    Plist (Property List) files contain instructions for recording and executing tasks associated with the the application or function that owns them. They can and do become corrupted. If you look in the ~Library/Preferences Folder you can usually guess what application or function the .plist serves by analyzing the file name.
    Proper identification of the appropriate .plist is not always so obvious, but for example com.apple.iCal.plist is the preference file for iCal. When an application malfunctions, removing the associated .plist file from the preferences folder to the Desktop is often the best first troubleshooting step.
    If you have a problem with an application, Quit the application, find the associated plist file in the Preferences Folder, and move it to the Desktop as a first step in your troubleshooting procedure. Then log out/in or restart and re-evaluate the performance of the application.
    A new default .plist file is automatically created in your Preferences Folder after you remove the recalcitrant .plist and initiate the log out/in restart sequence. You can expect default application behavior and you will have to reset some preferences. If the application or function returns to normal after removing the .plist file, it will prove that the original file was corrupt, and you can now safely trash the .plist file which you placed on the Desktop.
    If the application or function is unsatisfactory, the original copy of the plist file which was placed on the Desktop can be safely returned to the preferences folder. Just allow the system to replace the newer plist.
    If you are having problems with any aspect of OS X, experiment with deleting the appropriate .plist file. Plist corruption is common and .plist file deletion often cures many problems. Too many users try intricate solutions first and end up complicating their problem.

  • My aperture library will not open after restoring my whole computer after a kernal panic.  I can not get the Aperture troubleshooting menu to open...any help?

    My aperture library will not open after restoring my whole computer after a kernal panic.  I can not get the Aperture troubleshooting menu to open...any help?

    Leonie,
    Fisrt let me thank you for your reply and assistance!  So here is the problem with so more detail...I was not sure I was going to get any replies ; )
    I restored from a time machine back up.
    History of Failure:
    I was trying to launch Aperture when the kernal panic occured.  My computer had been closed, and asleep and the battery was dead.  I plugged in charger and it was restoring/waking up after being asleep/shutting down from dead battery.  I launched Aperture from the dock and as soon as it opened the kernal panic occured.  After that the computer would not turn on.  It would try to boot then it would shut off.  I even tried to safe boot to no avail.  I went to the Apple store and they told me that the only thing I could do was restore whole computer from back up.  So thats what I did.
    Since then my previous aperture library: "2011" will not open.  I have created a new aperture library "2012", and it runs fine.  I have added new photos for about the past month...no problems.
    When I launch aperture with 2012 library then try to switch libraries, I get the following prompt: "The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch."  I choose "Relaunch" and I get the following warning prompt: "There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library 20111.aplibrary”."  The only option is "Quit"
    Both libraries are version 3.2.3
    Computer stats: 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM, OS X 10.6.8
    I have tried to launch aperture troubleshooting by holding option+command from both the aperture icon and from the library file, neither will launch the troubleshooting feature.
    I am ok with computers, but not a whiz (mechanical engineer)...to me it seems as though there is a corrupt path or file or some sort of "check" that is failing, becuase the failure occurs so fast after trying to launch aperture. Maybe that doesn't make any sense but just a thought.
    I hope that you may be able to provide some insight.  Thank you again for you time and I hope that you have a nice day!
    Mike

  • IPhoto Keeps Quitting Even after Deleting Plist Files Repairing perm Files

    When I try to launch iPhoto The page seems to begin to load then I get a box saying " The application iPhoto has unexpectedly quit". I tried to troubleshoot by deleting the iPhoto plist files and then I repaired the permission files.There is still no change.
    What else can I do? Thanks very much for your help!

    Glad to help, but I think you worked the magic Sally. Deleting photos from the Desktop is harmless to iPhoto, and doing the same again should not be a problem. Maybe it was the overfull disk that initially caused iPhoto to think, 'I don't have enough space here to open, so I'll crash.'
    It works like this. If you connected a camera and imported them into iPhoto, then that is the only place those photos reside and to delete any of them afterwards would have to be done in iPhoto where you would select a photo, then Move to Trash. This would keep the index straight.
    But if you had some photos on your desktop and imported them into iPhoto, it makes a copy of them inside the iPhoto Library. If you were to delete one of those photos from the Desktop, it would still show in iPhoto because its copy still exists in the iPhoto Library.
    So when you reported the problem arose after your deleted some photos, it made me think along the lines I did. But as you didn't muck about with the iPhoto Library folder's contents, you could not have damaged it. So you haven't done anything to wreck things. Maybe iPhoto was just choking from a lack of space.
    It's great your photos are still all there. Now, with that copy of your iPhoto Library - put it on a CD for safe keeping. Games, software, info from websites, even songs can mostly be replaced if need be, but one's photos are unique and deserved to be backed up, to either another hard drive or burnt to an optical disk.
    A tip: I suggest you create a new folder in your Pictures folder called say, ExtraShots (name it what you like) and put your photos there instead of the desktop. Doing so is not crucial, just tidy, and there is a slight advantage that your computer will run quicker if the Desktop is uncluttered.
    Not a tip: Do keep your hard drive down to less than about 90% full / at least 10% "available free space" as Macs like room.
    All the best, and I hope you take some great photos.

  • Aperture Will Not Open - Aperture Troubleshooting Basics Guide Does Not Hel

    I cannot get Aperture to open and I have gone through all of the steps listed in "Aperture: Troubleshooting Basics". I have tried all of the suggestions including deinsatalling and reinstalling Aperture. Nothing works.
    When I click to open the program from the dock I receive the following error msg..."Library Information directory path contains a file where a floder was expected. The Aperture Library could not be created at '/users/perdjr/pictures/aperturelibrary.aplibrary/aperture.aplib'
    If anyone knows how to fix this I would be grateful.
    thx

    So your username is perdjr?
    Do you have any odd permissions set there?

  • Trashed windowserver plist files, now monitor behavior is totally erratic

    Hello,
    I followed advice posted in another topic which suggested deleting the windowserver plist files to address erratic display behavior. If I remember correctly, I deleted four such files (sorry, didn't record the exact file names).
    Upon rebooting, the system created two new windowserver plist files
    com.apple.windowserver.plist
    com.apple.windowserver.0016cba959d1.plist
    The monitor behavior is now totally erratic. Specifically, anytime my Mini goes to sleep, it doesn't recognize the monitor when I wake it up. Screen is black with a "no signal" message generated by the monitor. I have to reboot several times, reset PRAM or reset the PMU to get the display back. No specific sequence of steps seems to do the trick, but I can get the Mini to recognize the display after several attempts with the above-mentioned approach.
    Here is the system set-up:
    Mini 1.83 GHz Intel Duo Core
    Viewsonic VX2245wm (the one with the built in ipod dock)
    Did I delete windowserver plist files that I should not have deleted? Any other thoughts on troubleshooting this?
    Thanks for any help.

    PS: I'm using MAC OS X 10.4.1
    Also, what originally prompted me to trash the plist files was that the display behavior became erratic following Apple updates a couple weeks ago.

    What changed since last time you launched aperture?
    Try this first to isolate the issue to your library or your system
    1) hold down the option key while launching aperture. When prompted choose create new library. Just create it on your desktop or something so you can get rid of it later. If goes will and aperture starts with a blank library quit aperture and do the same thing but navigate back to your original library with choose library and go to step two.
    2)If it still crashes with your real library hold down option and command while launching Aperture and choose rebuild library and see if that helps.

  • Can no longer read plist files

    I've got a script that iterates through a list of hostnames, connects to each host, looks for the existence of a list of applications, and if they exist reads their Info.plist for the version.  This worked seamlessly until a couple of days ago.  The only change I can think of is having changed my username on all of my Macs from <username> to <username>.sa to differentiate privileged accounts from unprivileged accounts.  Yes, this caused a number of issues, and I've hunted them down.  I can connect to every host with <username>.sa, perform actions with sudo, etc.  What I can't do any more is read plist files, even when logged in locally:
    quad:~ username.sa$ defaults read /Applications/Utilities/Adobe\ Flash\ Player\ Install\ Manager.app/Contents/Info.plist

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Hi
    Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
    A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
    So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
    B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
    One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
    C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
    What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
    ( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
    On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
    Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
    This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
    Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
    Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!
    Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
    (after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
    • go up to Apple Menu
    • Down to System Pref's
    • Select Accounts - Create a new User
    • Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
    • Log into as the new User
    Now try iMovie
    Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
    If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
    Else - the problem are much more severe.
    D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.
    • Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    • Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)

  • Aperture ate my picture files and they are not recoverable.  The guy at the Genius Bar told me to Trash the App, empty Trash, then go to Purchases and reinstall.  But Purchases says it is "Installed" so it does not let me download it again.  HELP!!!!

    Aperture ate my picture files and they are not recoverable.  The guy at the Genius Bar told me to Trash the App, empty Trash, then go to Purchases and reinstall.  But Purchases says it is "Installed" so it does not let me download it again.  HELP!!!!

    I typed Aperture into Spotlight and sure enough it did show up.
    It looks like it is supposed to be in Apps.
    But it is not there.
    So I clicked on the spotlight Aperture and it opened up the App!!!!
    But I do not know where it is to move it!
    How can I find it?
    While Aperture is running and you are seeing it in the Dock, ctrl-click (or right click) the Dock icon.
    You will see a contextual menu. Click on "Options", then select "Show in Finder".
    And check the "keep in Dock" mark, so you will not lose it from the Dock.

  • New to applescript. need to create a plist file using applescript

    Needed some help I need on creatinga plist file below using applescript and I can't make it happen needed some hand on this.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">

    <string>${localAdminUser}</string>
    <key>Password</key>
    <string>${localAdminPassword}</string>

    <array>
    <dict>
    <key>Username</key>
    <string>${userName}</string>
    <key>Password</key>
    <string>${userPassword}</string>
    </dict>
    </array>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    I have tis code but it doesn't seems to work.
    tell application "System Events"
      -- create an empty property list dictionary item
              set the parent_dictionary to make new property list item with properties {kind:record}
      -- create new property list file using the empty dictionary list item as contents
              set the plistfile_path to "~/Desktop/example.plist"
              set this_plistfile to ¬
      make new property list file with properties {contents:parent_dictionary, name:plistfile_path}
      -- add new property list items of each of the supported types
      make new property list item at end of property list items of contents of this_plistfile ¬
                        with properties {kind:string, name:"Username", value:"${localAdminUser}"}
      make new property list item at end of property list items of contents of this_plistfile ¬
                        with properties {kind:string, name:"Password", value:"${localAdminPassword}"}
      make new property list item at end of property list items of contents of this_plistfile ¬
                        with properties {kind:list, name:"AdditionalUsers"}
      make new property list item at end of property list items of contents of this_plistfile ¬

      make new property list item at end of property list items of contents of this_plistfile ¬
                        with properties {kind:string, name:"Password", value:"${localAdminPassword}"}
    end tell
    The result of the above code will generate a plist file below

    Or you may create a record in AppleScript and set the value of plist file at once. Like this.
    set plist_file to (path to desktop)'s POSIX path & "example.plist"
    --set plist_file to "~/desktop/example.plist"
    set dict to ¬
        {|Username|:"${localAdminUser}", |Password|:"${localAdminPassword}"} & ¬
        {|AdditionalUsers|:{¬
            {|Username|:"${localAdminUser}", |Password|:"${localAdminPassword}"} ¬
    --set dict to {|Username|:"${localAdminUser}", |Password|:"${localAdminPassword}", |AdditionalUsers|:{{|Username|:"${localAdminUser}", |Password|:"${localAdminPassword}"}}}
    tell application "System Events"
        tell (make new property list file with properties {name:plist_file})
            set value to dict
        end tell
    end tell

  • Mail.app crashes on opening - no plist file to delete

    This started happening a couple of days ago. Every time I open the mail app, it freezes (spinning beachball) and then crashes. Attached below is the most recent crash report. I apparently don't have the plist file that everyone says to delete.
    So what are my options? I've looked at other threads, and they're not quite helpful for me.

    Truncated version of the crash log (not sure you want the whole thing, since it's huge):

    Ugh. Well, got far enough to import my old mailboxes and set up my accounts when the app crashed. I got rid of the plist file once again, Mail started up with no problem ... then crashed.
