APEx '03 and Non-Apple Wireless Client Connection Problems

Good morning. I have a 2003 vintage AirPort Extreme, running 5.5.1 firmware (due to the issues with the newer firmware discussed on this forum).
--> Wired iMax
My setup is DSL-->APEx--|
--> Apple Wireless Clients
--> Linksys w54 acting as a bridge
In order to get the Linksys working in the first place, I had to remove the WEP, not a huge deal as we live in the boonies and no one within range of the APEx. I couldn't figure out how to get anything to work with Apple wireless security outside of the Family. I have it manually set to channel 1, and radio mode to G only.
My problem basically is that non-Apple devices can see the SSID but cannot connect. The problem at hand are my kids' various PSPs & Ninendo DS's, and a little Windows CE netbook. Of course, none of these simple devices give anything helpful in terms of errors. Those three different devices all have their own version of the same error: See the SSID, try to connect, but fail.
I'd like to figure out this problem, although the simpler solution might be to just buy another cheap Linksys on craiglist and use it for the non-Apple stuff.

Bump?

  • All non-Apple Wireless Clients won't Connect to Time Capsule

    I have a latest gen Apple 2TB TC (ME177LL/A) and have had it for about 14 months. I have never had any issue with it in the past and have perhaps only had to reset it twice in that 14 month span.
    Came home from work last night to watch some Netflix on my PS4, and noticed my PS4 couldn't connect to the network. In the PS4 OS I kept getting errors that said either the network no longer existed or my password was incorrect. I simply tried to re-enter my password multiple times, but only once was the PS4 successfully able to connect. The one time it did connect the network speed indicated in the PS4 speed test was less than 200 kpbs. Within moments, the PS4 lost connection again. I was unable to reconnect.
    At this point I figured I would just use the PS3 instead...same issue, however. Initially thought it was perhaps a PSN issue, but this time I never once could get the PS3 to connect. It repeatedly just said the network wasn't available or the password was incorrect. Went through the same troubleshooting steps that I did on the PS4 with no luck.
    At this point I realized my Lyric thermostat had been erroring out and giving me a notification on my phone---the app on my phone wasn't able to connect to the Lyric via Wifi. Also noticed my August Connect was flashing red and was not connected. DirecTV Genie was not connected to my TC network either. Then went to my home office to discover my Slingbox was no longer connected either. Interestingly enough, though, my iPhone, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, wife's iPhone, and MacBook all were still connected to my TC network with no issues. I performed speed tests on all of them and all were giving me well over my 60 Gbps Internet speeds. These devices never disconnected nor had any hiccups.
    Essentially determined all my non-Apple devices couldn't stay connected to the TC network.
    Proceeded to just reset the TC and see what would happen. None of the non-Apple devices could connect. Same "Network not found/incorrect password"
    Then proceeded to perform factory reset on TC. At the same time I unplugged my Charter internet modem from power and cat5 out. Powered on modem, waited. Then powered up TC. I did this process twice through, once with auto selected 2.4/5 Ghz channels--still had issue with devices being unable to connect. The second time through, I set up the 2.4/5 Ghz bases upon the most "open" channels as shown by iStumblr (I live in fairly large luxury apartment building that has many networks -- so there are A LOT of networks).
    This time I appeared to have success. One-by-one I was able to connect all my non-Apple devices to this new network with the new SSID and credentials. All devices were able to connect and the PS3/PS4 were able to connect to PSN and I was very easily able to get Netflix.
    Woke up this morning and noticed all non-Apple devices were once again not connected....really not sure what's going on. Didn't have time to dive in deeper before heading to work.
    Just as an FYI, I have 2 different Macs backing up to the TC via Time Machine wirelessly (the primary reason I have a TC and not another router). Also have an Asustor AS5008T connected to the TC via round robin link aggregation. All Macs are running Yosemite. All iPhones are running iOS 8.3. Offhand, I don't know the firmware the TC is running. I made no recent changes to the network or any of the hardware.
    Anybody have any idea what could be the culprit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Whilst I said in my first post that apple had removed all the logs.. you can still get them via PC version 5 airport utility... you will need to plug in via ethernet since wireless is not working. You can also install v5 utility into a Mac but I cannot tell you how. Google it.
    The other method.. and I am not at all sure if it is useful or not.
    Using the airport utility in an ipad.. click on the TC, then edit.. then advanced.. Diagnostics and Usage Data.
    Go into this and you will see the Airport utility has got a stack of info out of the TC..(for secret transmission to apple).
    eg
    I guess it is comparison between normal functionality and when it fails that will show something interesting.. meaning you will need to track the info... and it is not so easy to get it out other than as a screenshot..

  • 2504 controller + 2602 APs = wireless clients connectivity problems

    Hello, everybody!
    I have a connectivity problems of wireless clients. The symptoms are:
    1) Some clients receive 169.254.x.x., instead a correct DHCP addresses, less in a minute connection drops, and in controller's "Monitor" > "Clients" tab these clients are marked as "Excluded".
    2) Most of the clients receive the correct addresses from DHCP (192.168.2.x), but also loose connection soon.
    3) Wireless clients with correct addresses can't ping each other, gateway and an address of the controller's dynamic interface (all of them are in same subnet).
    4) And the most suspicious problem is that some machines are unable to connect to APs after several attemps to do that. I mean, I configure controller and change some options, trying to understand, whether they were applied or not and constantly connect and disconnet certain PC to the SSID. After five or ten attempts I can't connect to the SSID. During these attempts, the others PCs stay connected, without interruptions, and they could be reconnected again. It's like some kind of port security works, but I'm not sure...
    Do you have any ideas which options should I configure?
    My configuration:
    I have three interfaces on the controller: virtual, management (default) and dynamic (it is set to the WLAN)
    I have one SSID, WPA/WPA2, AES/TKIP, authentication PSK.
    My clients are a/b/g/n, all are permitted on the controller. No custom security policies were applied.
    All the devices are in a single room: controller, one AP and different clients: desktop, notebooks, iPad, Nokia Lumia, etc.
    I have an internal DHCP Server on the controller and it works perfectly well.
    I can provide all the screenshots required from web-interface of the controller...
    Many thanks in advance for all ideas that you have about these problems...

    Hi, there!
    The problem was solved.
    1) APIPA address receives only single machine with Win8 - I think there are some firewall issues
    2) Other devices have been loosing connection because they were mobile devices, like iPad and Lumia. If you keep working with it, it doesn't drop the connection
    3) The dynamic interface address and gateway address were inaccessible because i had not used an appropriate port on the controller. =)))) Firstly, it was just a guess, but it proved.
    Now, everything works with WPA2, AES, PSK...
    It is a very good day!)
    The only question remains: why I can't connect machines, which have a static IP? During the controller initialization, I said "yes" for permitting static IPs...
    Guys, many thanks for your help!

  • Apple wireless keyboard connection problem

    My wireless keyboard has worked fine since I bought it 18 months ago. I haven't changed anything in my system but the PowerBook suddenly stopped responding to the keyboard although my wireless mouse works fine. I changed the batteries in the keyboard, restarted my computer and it still didn't work. I deleted the old keyboard and used the Bluetooth Set-Up assistant to reconfigure the keyboard. When that didn't work, I downloaded the latest software patch for the keyboard. The computer now recognizes the keyboard but still won't pair with it. I've tried several times with the same results. Keyboard is on and diode lights up. The only thing I've done differently is sync my new iphone with the computer. This doesn't seem like it could be related but after I synced the iphone the keyboard stopped working. Just a fluke? Is my keyboard dead? I don't want to waste a lot of time if the keyboard is dead but I'm not crazy about shelling out for a new one. Its been very dry here and I've been generating lots of static electricity. This doesn't seem to have effected any of my other hardware but could I have fried my keyboard with a static discharge and not noticed? Could it be a virus (I've never had one before so I didn't renew my Norton last month when it expired)? How would I even know if I had a virus? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I have gone through the exact same experience as dr jill. I was still using Panther when it happened to me. I upgraded to Leopard several weeks after my keyboard problems started, but that was just something I had wanted to do for a while. Tonight, I went to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store. My keyboard pairs with other laptops in the store. When the "genius" tried to pair one of the keyboards in the store with my mac it failed to pair. She even booted my mac up with her external hard disk and the pairing still did not work. At that point, she suggested I could either pay for a new bluetooth card or pay a flat rate fee that would cover anything in case the bluetooth card is not the problem. When I got home, I managed to pair my bluetooth cell phone with my mac. My apple wireless mouse also continues to work fine. So I don't think this is a Leopard only issue since it began when I still had Panther. It's not just a crappy keyboard problem since it works with other macs. If anyone has a solution for this, please post it. You would be the hero for many people.

  • Mac fails to connect to non-Apple wireless network (& changing channel?)

    [sorry to post this in two forums - I think I posted it in the wrong one before]
    I have a wireless network set up from a Netgear wireless router. My Windows XP computer automatically connects to the network every time. But my Mac (OS X 10.4.11) only connects about 50% of the time. The rest of the time it says "None of your trusted wireless networks could be found." Then when I click the airport icon in top right and select the network from the list, it says "There was an error joing the Airport network [network name]." When I click "Try again" a few times, it sometimes eventually connects, but other times it fails repeatedly. It is completely unpredictable.
    I have been looking for solutions on the internet. Lots of other people have problems connecting Macs to non-Apple wireless networks. But no one else seems to have this exact problem: my Mac connects some of the time, but not all. Anyone have any suggestions?
    (One idea I found was to change the channel that the Mac tries to use. How do I do this? I can't find "channel" anywhere under System Preferences - Network - Airport.)
    All OSs are fully updated, so that is not the problem.

    I travel extensively, and both my I-Mac G5 and Intel MacBook are very inconsistent in this regard. I do not think it is a router issue given the variety of networks I try to access. Additionally frustrating once a connection is made is that Internet Connect or Network Status will say I am connected to the Internet via Airport, yet Safari and Mail say I am not connected to the Internet.
    Network Diagnostics has never had an answer. More often than not i end up using my cellular card. but the Mac often has issues with that too... sporadic like first poster describes.

  • Understanding of wireless client connection to multiple APs

    Hello,
    I would like to know how do wireless clients connect to APs
    For e.g. if in a single floor square office space - wireless network with multiple APs exists on the same SSID, how do clients decide which AP to connect to. For e.g. the client may get similar strength signals from two APs close to each other (such as Excellent). Which AP does client connect to.
    Secondly, how does the load distribution take place. For e.g. if on one AP, 10 clients connect and on the other AP, 20 clients connect, how can equal load distribution be acheived, that is 15 on each AP without the tiring MAC filtering configurations.
    Thirdly, is there something like number of user/connection restrictions on APs. I have gone through some AP manuals and did not find any such specifications like max. # of users = 20 etc. Currently we are using D-Link AP and have noticed that once the # of connections go upto 20, performance reduces heavily such as the latency on gateway pings go upto 1000-2000ms.
    Fourthly, how can I identify from the client to which AP it is connected.
    Thanks.

    ANS - Its first come first serve... however.. sometimes if we have multiple SSIDs one with open auth and no encryption and other fuly protected.. then the client wil connect to the open rather the secured on.

    ANS - MAC is a good option but apart from that.. i have seen somewhere but not able to remember the command which will limit the number of clients per radio..

    ANS - AP can take upto 2048 MAC addresses.. its recommended not to have more than 24 clients per AP..
    Fourthly, hw can I identify from the client to which AP it is connected.
    ANS -If the clients are CCX compatible and aironet extentions enabled on the AP. then the command "show dot11 ass" will tell the clients connecting to which AP.. the AP name will get displsayed in the output..

    Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
    Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

    Can I use a non apple wireless hard drive with time Machine?

    Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

    Can I transfer ring tones between ipad and non-apple phone using bluetooth?

    No. iOS devices do not support file transfers between non-iOS devices over Bluetooth.
    They probably wouldn't work anyway, as iOS ringtones have to be in a specific format.

  • A client connection problem....

    Hi All,
    I have a client connection problem.
    The project which i did with C# (vs.net 2005) and Oracle XE , works well on my developer machine but i am getting a connection string error on the client side. The error comes from System.Exception class not from OracleException.
    The properties of the Oracle.DataAccess reference are ;
    Description: Oracle.DataAccess.dll
    Runtime Version:v1.0.3705
    Version: 10.2.0.100
    Path: C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\bin\Oracle.DataAccess.dll
    The sample code is:
    using Oracle.DataAccess.Client;
    using Oracle.DataAccess.Types;
    private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    OracleConnection cnn = new OracleConnection();
    OracleCommand cmm = new OracleCommand();
    try
    cnn.ConnectionString = "USER ID=" + textEdit1.Text + ";PASSWORD=" + textEdit2.Text +
    ";DATA SOURCE=" + textEdit3.Text + ";";
    DataSet ds = new DataSet();
    cmm.Connection = cnn;
    cmm.Connection.Open();
    cmm.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
    cmm.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM FORMS";
    OracleDataAdapter ad = new OracleDataAdapter(cmm);
    ad.Fill(ds);
    gridControl1.DataSource = ds.Tables[0];
    cmm.Connection.Close();
    cnn.Dispose();
    catch (OracleException oexx)
    MessageBox.Show(oexx.Message,"From OracleException");
    cmm.Connection.Close();
    cnn.Dispose();
    catch (Exception exx)
    MessageBox.Show(exx.Message,"Fromn Exception");
    cmm.Connection.Close();
    cnn.Dispose();
    And the error message is:
    'user ıd' is an invalid connection string attribute --> Oracle.DataAccess
    Any idea ?
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Adam

    1. What is the client machine locale? Is it Turkish by any chance?
    2. Try using lowe case "user id" in the connection string instead of upper case "USER ID".
