APEX for multiple databases

Can I install APEX in one database and use it to connect and develop applications for other databases in network.

The two issues that I have run into with running an ApEx application in one database against data in another database is dealing with sequences and LOBs.
If you use a database link which does not specify a user name and password to get a sequence value from a remote database in an ApEx application you get the following type of error:
failed to parse SQL query:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
ORA-02063: preceding line from ...Since the sequence is stored in the other database and ApEx runs in the PL/SQL engine because of the engine's security, you have to use a database link with a user name and password in it like:
CREATE DATABASE LINK db_link CONNECT TO you_username IDENTIFIED BY your_password USING your_remote_db;
SELECT your_sequence.NEXTVAL@db_link FROM DUAL;Accessing LOB columns in your remote database cannot be done via a SELECT statement. You have to use an INSERT statement. I have my solution to this on my blog.

  • Installing one APEX for multiple databases servers.

    Hello, everyone.
I'm new on this world of Oracle solutions, and I would like
    very much your help.
Here in my company I have five database servers, and I want to install
the Oracle Apex in a way that I only need access one webpage and have
the possibility to edit all the database.
    For instance:
Imagine that I have five machines and each one has a instance of one database.
I would instal the Apex on each machine. But I would like to open the Apex on
my browser only once, and have the capability to work with all databases.
It would be like the Apex had a scrollbar and I could choose wich database to work.
Is that possible? If it is, could be done with XML DB server? What is the best HTTP server to use in this case?
    Thanks for your attention.
Sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm new and I'm learning.
    Regards, Leandro R. de Freitas.

    Hi,
as you describe this, it is not possible. An Apex instance is installed in an Oracle instance and is as a result is tied very closely to that instance.
That being said, it is still possible to access data in different database instances from a seperate database by the use of database links, though this is can be a little complicated and not always desirable from a performance point of view. Whether this is desirable in your instance depends on the architecture of your applications.
For example, if your 5 different instances are part of one distributed application, it may be desirable to install Apex in one instance that may be termed the master instance and have it access data from the other instances via database links, which should already exist in a distributed application.
On the other hand, if your applications are quite distinct, then I would see it as desirable to have seperate installations of Apex in each instance. This would enable different release cycles and versioning if required, lead towards better performance and avoid single point of failure. If you need a united front end to these applications then you could maybe create a gateway application on one of the Apex instances, though how you deal with sign on would depend on your architecture eg Single Sign on vs LDAP etc. You could simply create an HTML page somewhere on your intranet that points to these applications and then let each application deal with sign on.
    I hope this helps.

  • Use 1 listener for multiple database in a server

    hi guys,
just want to check whether this is the right way to configure my Listener.ORA . I am using 1 listener.ora to listen for incoming request connection from remote client. There are multiple databases installed in a server.

    (SID_NAME = O10G)
)sorry i am reading about it so did not install another database to test out. Just thinking in the line that it mention that the list of SID is refering to the multiple database that is installed in a server and i am using 1 listener.
    Please further advice.

  • Multiple Keyword Sets (For Multiple Databases)

I work with several different Lightroom databases and it would be nice to be able to have separate sets of keywords that go with each database.
In my specific case, I use one database for my personal photographic endeavors and another for an image library for our church. The keywords tags used for my Nature photography images and the tags used for the event photography shots for church are very different. Hence, there are lots of keywords in both libraries that have zero images attached to them.
It would be very useful in you could allow multiple keyword sets to track with multiple databases.

  • Discoverer Reporting Solution for Multiple Databases

I have to build oracle discoverer reports (single point of access) for four different applications. Each application is having separate databases. So whether i should create separate EULs for each applications (in respective databases) or Should i create a single EUL in any one of the databases and then use db links to connect rermaining databases (for reports from the other applications).
Can u suggest me which method will work good if you see the performace?. I need a dingle point of access for all the discoverer reports.
The worksheets need to be deployed with oracle portal for access of reports in a single click. Is there any way to pre configure the db credentila for each worksheet...?

    Hi
My replies below make the assumption that you are not allowed to do any ETL and therefore the data from each database has to be pulled as is. If you do have ETL capability the situation changes dramatically.
In addition to what Sharon has said the cost based optimiizer will have a difficult job rewriting your query efficiently if you use database links, and if you attempt to have queries with some tables from one database and some from another the optimizer will not work at all. I mean. How could it? How could the optimzier in database A know anything about the statistics in databases B, C or D? Wherever the EUL is, that is where the driving optimizer will be so choose wisely obi-wan :-)
For me it's more about user needs than IT needs. If the business has a need to combine data from multiple databases then having a single EUL with database links would be a necessity. However, if they really are disparate systems with nothing in common such as say having Peoplesoft HR in one and E-Busines Suite Inventory in another with perhaps an in-house tracking system in another then I would look at having separate EULs, one in each.
Having one EUL across non-related systems means you have to mix users and roles and can be hard to manage. It actually becomes messy when just two databases are involved never mind four. So even though you might think it is more difficult to maintain 4 EULs, if the objects really are different and you have differing roles and usernames it actually will probably be simpler. They will be simpler to backup, simpler for exporting and importing and it will be faster for Discoverer to maintain workbooks as there will be fewer of them. Plus your system will have access to its local optimzier thereby ensuring the SQL is efficient.
If you are going to use one EUL you need to start out on a sound foundation. This means using libraries to control access too business areas and workbooks. You'll need to adopt some simple naming standards to keep things separate and manageable. I wrote a paper about libraries a few years ago and it is available free of change here on my website: http://ascbi.com/downloads.htm. The paper is called Discoverer Libraries - a Concept.

  • Can iDSIE (Meta-directory) be used as a single authentication point from iPlanet Web Server for multiple databases using direct "or" indirect connectors?

Basically, the latest release of iPlanet Web Server forces the user/group information source to be an LDAP database. Currently, the user accounts are in Active Directory, NT, Oracle and NetWare Directory Service in this heterogeneous environment.
What I am looking for is a meta-directory product which can do two things:
1-Single authentiation point for users in mulitple databases from iPlanet Web Server.
2-Single administration point for all of the databases listed above.
For example, can I add/modify/delete a user account at the meta-directory level and have this propagate to all of the databases listed above reducing the administration to one meta-directory product?

With an Virtual Directory solution, you can authenticate Iplanet Web Server against nearly anything including any LDAPv3 Directory Server, Microsoft Active Directory, Windows NT Domains, Oracle RDBMS, IBM DB2 RDBMS, Microsoft SQL, and others.
All of this is done dynamically and doesn't require any heavyweight synchronization process. The Virtual Directory acts as a dynamic schema / DIT / data translation engine for different types of repositories.
OctetString's Virtual Directory Engine is one such example. You can download a 30 day evaluation copy at:
    http://www.octetstring.com
It will take you all of 30 minutes to get iPlanet Web Server authenticated against and using groups from things like Oracle RDBMS, Windows NT Domains, or Active Directory.

Issue with Database Schemas and Crystal Reports
When building a report with Crystal Reports, the user is required to enter database connectivity information.  This database information allows the user to select which tables the information for the report will come from.  When choosing the tables, the user must navigate through the available database schemas in the database connection to each table that is required.  The database structure is described below:
    Database Connector 1
    Schema1
    Schema2
    Table1
    Table2
    Table3
    Schema3
After the user has selected the appropriate tables, they are allowed to begin building the report.  The user puts the necessary table fields onto the report.  Crystal Reports uses only the required fields on the report to build a query to the database for retrieving the data.  Thus, the fewer the fields on the report, the less information required.  A single query is built by Crystal Reports to get all the data from the database.  This query can be viewed from within the Crystal Reports application, but it cannot be changed by the user.
When viewing the query generated by Crystal Reports, you will notice that the tables will have the schema name attached to them.  This is done as part of the fully qualified name of the table.
Processing a Crystal Reports report in a batch environment requires that the database connector that is stored inside the report be changed.  This change is necessary due to the setup of our system.  The name of the database server, the database username and the database password are different in the different execution environments.  Our current implementation is to programmatically change these values before running the report.
The issue arises in that changing the database connector does not change the schema of the tables used in the query.  The schema information in the query is hardcoded.  Thus, when moving the reports from one environment to another, the original schema used is being propogated to the new environment, where the original schema is not appropriate.
Changing the database connector will, however, change the schema of the tables used in the field selector.  Any field that is used from the field selector on the report or in formulas will change appropriately.  But the fields used to create the initial query will not change.
The results of the schema not being changed appropriately in the query is when the report is attempting to populate with the Java environment, an exception is thrown and processing is terminated.  When the exception is thrown, the entire process of populating the report is terminated.
Anyone know a solution to this?
    Erik Bleifield

Well, CSV would not be a preferred option.
We need to get the output to a report archive that only supports ascii text. We are hoping to preserve the output formatting of columns, etc. CSV would not preserve the formatting.
We are currently looking at outputting to PDF and then running a 3rd party product to convert from PDF to text. This leads to a good amount of formatting issues as well.
Why would exporting to text not be supported in Java? Where one can execute this manually in CR 2008 for Windows.
I wonder if this is intentional by product management choice - or a defect?
    Thanks for further consideration.

  • How to Develop with ADF Business Components for Multiple Databases

I developed business component by http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jdev/multidatabaseapp-085183.html tutorial. it was work on mysql and oracle database. In mysql , Set Up Primary Key Generation is only one sequence share betweeen tables. How to make another sequence each mysql table?

    juddi,
As that article states, the built-in capability of ADF BC uses that single table for all entities (tables) - since it's just a surrogate key, it should not matter. If you wanted different sequences for different entities (tables), that is something you'd have to code for yourself.

  • Using a Single HTTP Server for Multiple APEX Instances

Our company's DBA Manager has asked if it would be possible to externalize the HTTP server portion of APEX from the DB Servers. In other words, he would strongly prefer that the DB Servers *only* run Oracle Database software.
We know that we can install the HTTP server on another box but, in thinking about how to do this, we were wondering if it is really necessary to create a separate HTTP server installation for each APEX instance. What we'd really like to do is have one HTTP server for all our our Dev boxes and several (but, not one to one) for each of our upper environments; staging, qa, prod, etc.
Right now, each instance have a single dads.conf file on each DB box. So, if we we're to attempt to consolidate them, we'd need some way to embed multiple dads files and to associate each instance with the correct one.
Has anyone ever done this or (preferably) have some examples?
    Thanks,
    -Joe

    Joe,
I don´t know a specific reference for it, I remembered it because when I was looking the documentation on the site, I saw the reference "Support for multiple database connections" in the URL: APEX Listener New Features 2.0</title><meta name="Title" content="APEX Listener New Features 2.0…
I´ve tried to use APEX listener some time ago, but in a earlier version together with glassfish. So, since for me was only one database, I created the necessary amount of DAD´s on my database, each one for a specific port.
Check the link and you´ll see the same information I saw.

  • TDE Wallets & Multiple Databases on same Host

The Oracle TDE Best Practices (doc ID 130696) states this:
Multiple databases on the same host
If there are multiple Oracle Databases installed on the same server, they
must access their own individual TDE wallet. Sharing the same wallet between independent instances is not supported
and can potentially lead to the loss of encrypted data.
If the databases share the same ORACLE_HOME, they also share the same
sqlnet.ora file in $TNS_ADMIN . In order to access their individual wallet, the
    DIRECTORY entry for the ENCRYPTION_WALLET_LOCATION
needs to point each database to its own wallet location:
    DIRECTORY= /etc/ORACLE/WALLETS/$ORACLE_UNQNAME
The names of the subdirectories under /etc/ORACLE/WALLETS/ reflect
the ORACLE_UNQNAME names of the individual databases.
If the databases do not share the same ORACLE_HOME, they will also have their individual sqlnet.ora
files that have to point to the individual subdirectories.
What is the correct sqlnet.ora syntax to do this?  I currently have what is below but it doesn't seem to be correct:
    ENCRYPTION_WALLET_LOCATION =
      (SOURCE = (METHOD = FILE)
      (METHOD_DATA =
      (DIRECTORY = /local/oracle/admin/wallet/DB#1)
      (DIRECTORY = /local/oracle/admin/wallet/DB#2)

    Hi,
You can check this :Setting ENCRYPTION_WALLET_LOCATION For Wallets Of Multiple Instances Sharing The Same Oracle Home (Doc ID 1504783.1)
i haven't done this for multiple database, but as per Doc you can use the syntex like
    ENCRYPTION_WALLET_LOCATION =
      (SOURCE = (METHOD = FILE)
      (METHOD_DATA =
      (DIRECTORY = /local/oracle/admin/wallet/$ORACLE_UNQNAME)
Whenever you set the Environmnet with
    export $ORACLE_UNQNAME=DB#1
it will choose the file from respective directory like  /local/oracle/admin/wallet/DB#1

  • Need to get data from multiple database instances in a single query

    Hi,
I need a small favour from you guys. The prob is as follows:
I need to get name, row_id from table A from schema 1 and gbu_name, name from table B from schema 2 where a.name = b.name. I wrote the query in the following manner:
    SELECT a.name, a.row_id, b.gbu_name
    FROM Schema1.A as a, Schema2.B as b
    Where a.name = b.name
But this query is not working and the error is like " The table does not exists".
Please update me how to avoid the error and get the right sort of result.
    Thanks & Regards,

Ah, youre actually asking different things.
In your topic title, you say youre running separate instances
In your body text, you say you are under different user/schema
So tell me, do you have more than one database or not? How many entries in your TNS file?
I would say, for "multiple database instances"
    SELECT
      a.id, b.id
    FROM
      tableA a
      INNER JOIN
      tableB@OTHER_DATABASE_LINK_NAME b  <--NOTE!
USING(id)And of course you will have to look up CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK sql..

  • Best pratices for RMAN backup management for many databases

    Dear all,
We have many 10g databases (>40) hosted on multiple Windows servers which are backup up using RMAN.
A year ago, all backup's were implemented through Windows Scheduled Tasks using some batch files.
We have been busy (re)implementing / migrating such backup in Grid Control.
I personally prefer to maintain the backup management in Grid Control, but a colleague wants now to go back to the batch files.
What i am looking for here, are advices in the management of RMAN backup for multiple databases: do you guys use Grid Control or any third-party backup management tool or even got your home-made solution?
One of the discussion topic is the work involved in case that the central backup location changes.
Well... any real-life advices on best practices / strategies for RMAN backup management for many databases will be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Thierry

    Hi Thierry,
    Thierry H. wrote:
    Thanks for your reaction.
So, i understand that Grid Control is for you not used to manage the backups, and as a consequence, you also have no 'direct' overview of the job schedules.
One of my concern is also to avoid that too many backups are started at the same time to avoid network / storage overload. Such overview is availble in Grid Control's Jobs screen.
And, based on your strategy, do you recreate a 'one-time' Oracle scheduled job for every backup, or do your scripts create an Oracle job with multiple schedule?
    You're very welcome!
Well, Grid Control is not an option for us, since each customer is in a separate infrastructure, and with their own licensing. I have no real way (in difference to your situation) to have a centralized point of control, but that on the other hand mean that I don't have to consider network/storage congestion, like you have to.
The script is run from a "permanent" job within the dba-scheduler, created like this:
    dbms_scheduler.create_job(
            job_name        => 'BACKUP',
            job_type        => 'EXECUTABLE',
            job_action      => '/home/oracle/scripts/rman_backup.sh',
            start_date      => trunc(sysdate)+1+7/48,
            repeat_interval => 'trunc(sysdate)+1+7/48',
            enabled         => true,
            auto_drop       => false,
comments        => 'execute backup script at 03:30');and then the "master-script", determines which level to use, based on weekday from the OS. The actual job schedule (start date, run interval etc) is set together with the customer IT/IS dept, to avoid congestion on the backup resources.
I have no overview of the backup status, run times etc, but have made monitoring scripts that will alert me if/when a backup either fails, or runs for too long. This, in addition with scheduled disaster/recovery tests makes me sleep rather well at night.. ;-)
I realize that there (might be) better ways of doing backup scheduling in your environment, since my requirements are so completely different than yours, but I guess that we all face the same challenges in unifying the environments as much as possible, to minimize the amount of actual work we have to do. :-)
    Good luck!
