APEX vs Forms 6i

Hi, I am just new to APEX (not yet started!!). Just wanted to know, how good it is when compared with Oracle Forms 6i and Reports. I have development knowledge of Forms 6i few years back. Just wanted to know if I can create flexible forms and reports like Oracle Forms 6 in APEX. I know that APEX is a browser based, but still wanted to, with respect to developing a application, if I can create colorful forms and buttons and back-end scripts just like that of Oracle Forms 6.
It would be a great help if somebody can answer me on that. Also please give me pros and cons of APEX comparing to Forms 6i. Many thanks in advance.

This specific scenario? Yes. Its simple, if you are ok with different pages for each of the Forms
a) Create a Mater-Detail form on the Master and first detail
b) Create a Form for the other detail
c) Link up the forms using the Report Attributes> Edit column > Link
Check out this Re: Master-Details-Details and Re: Questions about Apex Master - Detail implementation
If you want all of that on one page then you have to use some advanced techniques like APEX_ITEM and manually build the third level, but its possible.

  • Second LOV based on First LOV in Oracle APEX tabular Form

    Hi,
    I had created a tabular form in which I am having two LOV's. This form is based on a query.
    I had created a javascript function which internally calls AJAX and populates the second LOV based on the value selected in first LOV when onchange.
    But the issue is, when the user recalls this APEX page to view the details or edit the details, the second LOV shows all the values instead of showing only the values related to first LOV.
    In the second LOV query I am trying to write the below query.
    select function_name fn
    ,function_code_id fci
    from catering_function_codes
    where function_type_id = NVL(#FUNCTION_TYPE_ID#,function_type_id)
    order by to_number(function_code_id)
    in which #FUNCTION_TYPE_ID# is the value of first LOV. But I am getting the below error.
    report error:
    ORA-20001: Error fetching column value: ORA-06550: line 1, column 187:
    PL/SQL: ORA-00911: invalid character
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
    How can you refer to the Second LOV the value of First LOV in a report based tabular form?
    Kindly let me know if you do not understand the issue.
    Please help me in this issue.
    Thank you
    Regards

    Hi Roel,
    Thank you for the quick reply.
    I used the query as given by you. This time it is not giving any error but showing all the values in the second LOV irrespective of what ever value is present in the first LOV
    This is an apex tabular form which is generated by apex based on a query. The controls will be dynamically generated by APEX for each row. How can we hard code the control name to :P99_FUNCTION_TYPE_ID?
    Please help me in this issue. Thank you

  • ORA-01403: no data found error (given by edit link of APEX-made form)

    Hello!
    I am a newbie in apex, so please forgive me if my question is stupid or obvious. I got a bit confused because of a problem, and I really hope that you professionals can give me some clues of where could I begin the elimination of this error.
    I made a report and a form in another page with APEX's tool Add Form/Report and Form. The report shows a full table, and the rows of the table are editable. However, I have rows which I can't edit because APEX gives me the following error:
    ORA-01403: no data found
    Error Unable to fetch row.
    Not all rows do this, but I have a few that do. Of course the report shows them, so I think they must exist. I didn't change anything special on the APEX-made items or processes.
    I thought that the problem could be with my data, but I couldn't see anything weird in that rows.
    Does anyone have an idea of what can this be caused by? I have APEX 2.1.0.00.39.
    Thanks,
    Eszter

    Hi Andy,
    Thank you very much for your time!
    The fields in the form are all right. The fields get filled in perfectly in most of the cases, only those few rows don't :(
    However, now that you wrote of the process of row fetching, I think that maybe I have an idea of what is happening. My table has two primary keys (two fields together make the primary key, I don't know how it's called in English), one of them is a date. (I know that this is quite a bad practice, but, much to my regret, I cannot change it.) Now, this date is in YY-MON-DD format, which is used by my language.
    One of this dates is from 1800's. As my report shows it, the year gets truncated to the last two character. APEX passes this value into the field of the form using varchar2, and when it tries to cast it back to YY-MON-DD format, then it supposes it's from 1900's instead of 1800's. With 19xx however it doesn't find my field.
    Does this sound logical? It seems logical to me, but I am a beginner... :(
    Still, if this is the core of the problem, it's most possibly not the only problem, because I have dates from 19xx which can't identify their rows... But I am suspicious because of these date things. If you have any idea then please let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Apex, Tabular forms and Nested Tables := Headache

    Hi All,
    I'm constructing an Apex aplication for Performance Reviewing staff and I have need of nested tables within each line item for ongoing comments during the year, the headings of which are drawn from another table, based on a template for which ones are to be used at any given time.
    I'd like to be able to use a tabular form to draw out the history of comments at any given time and modify them however I'm at a complete loss as to how to get this working with a tabular form in Apex. If anyone could point me at some good documentation on the subject or even suggest a better method to get this done I'd be very grateful.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Take a look at this article:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/misc/ObjectViewsAndNestedTables.php
    First, create a view as described on your nested and other table(s), with 'Instead Of' triggers handling the DML. Next create the tabular form based on the view. You'll find many posts in the forum regarding building a tablular form based on a view.

  • APEX Offline Forms

    I have requirement.
    Can we built offline forms on APEX meta data and populate base tables when connection is resolved.
    These forms need to be built on views on base bales.
    Edited by: |SN| on Oct 30, 2009 2:47 AM

    This is one of the few times when I say APEX is probably not the right technology for the job. You essentially have 2 major problems: Replication and Deployment.
    If they want to work offline, you're going to have to do some form of replication. Replication is NOT a trivial problem and whoever is working on it should have some experience with it. Oracle has a number of replication options using the Oracle Database. Another option to consider is a lighter weight database for the client db such as Berkley DB, which also has replication options: [Berkeley DB Replication|http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/programmer_reference/rep.html]. I mention that as the deployment / upgrade process might be significantly easier for Berkley DB. We all know what an Oracle DB installation is like, or an upgrade to a newer release. Multiply that by 200 and it doesn't sound like a lot of fun.
    As far as deployment, you have to deploy database objects (tables, indexes, etc) and application code. There's no built-in deployment functionality in APEX to have it automatically upgrade itself when you release a new version of your software. You would have to write that yourself. Maintaining that many APEX installations also sounds like a management nightmare.
    To play devils advocate, I started changing my mind a bit as I was typing this ;) If you will have an Oracle Database at every location regardless of what front-end you use, then maybe the deployment of APEX apps isn't significantly different than say a J2EE app.

    I usualy don't use the apex wizards to create forms when you need such custom functionality.
    I just make the needed items, and when saving the form elements to the db i run my own written procedure en i submit the page with the request 'UPDATE' and i also set an id item with the newly created id for the inserted record.
    So the page knows it should call the procedure that fills up all items with the values of the record i just saved. this also comes in handy when inserting a form in multiple tables.

  • Integrating Forms and Apex. (Calling Apex from Forms).

    Hi all.
    We'll soon start an upgrade of our Forms / Reports 6i Application to 11g.
    I was wondering, maybe, it would be nice to add some value for the upgrade process as a whole, using some of Apex new features like web mobile interface or maybe an integration between Forms an Apex, for example to provide users with the powerful features of Interactive Reports, just to name one.
    I have found this interesting link: http://roelhartman.blogspot.com/2008/11/integrate-oracle-forms-with-apex.html. (not a 100% clear for me, but at least it is a start).
    Obviously, to make it attractive, one would expect automatic login between the two Apps. As far as i know, this could be done like this:
    1) Using SSO. With that a Portal / Forms / Reports/ Discoverer/ version would be mandatory (too expensive for some clients).
    2) Oracle Access Manager? Not sure, can Oracle Forms connect to Access Manager? or LDAP? How about the licensing costs?. Not a clue.
    3) Make all Apex pages public? Not feasible.
    4) Now this one: in our forms application, every user authenticates within the application and we internally map that application user to an actual database user. At all times we hold metadata info about the current user (app, and DB), as well as application context. So this is my question:
    It is possible to create an Apex app, with database authentication method, and somehow pass the metadata from forms, and have a kind of custom login procedure that does all the application to DB user conversion process and application context setting????
    This is a very important question for us, although not sure where to really post it...
    Feedback will be greatly appreciated .....!
    Regards,Luis ....:)=

    I did something like that once. What you can do is set some random session id after logging in in Forms. Pass this session id to Apex every time and let Apex check if it is a valid session id.
    More information here:
    http://sqlcur.blogspot.com/2009/04/forms-apex-integration-2.html
    In that example I create a new session id on every call to an Apex page from Forms, but you can use the same session id as long as the user is logged in in Forms.

  • APEX tabular form update recognition

    Dear all,
    I am quite new to APEX so please apologize if I am asking "stupid" questions. Unfortunately, the information I was able to find up to now was only partially helpful. Apparently I must be missing something obvious. The APEX version I use is 4.0.1.
    When submitting a page that contains a tabular form, I need to find out, which record has been created or updated in order to fill in additional information automatically, e.g. logging data (created, last updated, ...). I cannot do this in a trigger, because the trigger sees only APEX_PUBLIC_USER and does not know about the "real" user who has connected to the database. If there is a better or easier way to do this, please let me know.
    My problem is to find out, if a new record has been added by clicking the "add row" button and / or if an existing record has been modified, because creation and modification have to be handled differently. Existing and unmodified records in the table must not be touched. I can access the columns by using APEX_APPLICATION.G_Fxx() but how do I recognize modifications? In a thread in this forum I found information about using a MD5 checksum. So I have added a checksum field using APEX_ITEM.MD5_HIDDEN() and tried to check this information. Unfortunately, doing this, I already get a problem when I submit the page after having added an empty record by clicking on "add row" but without having supplied any information. APEX then complains about information that has been modified in the meantime instead of just ignoring the empty record. This is probably because APEX considers the record as changed because of the checksum column I have added (I have read that the SQL query to create the tabular form must not be altered).
    Could anybody please show me the right way to do such a check?
    Thank you very much for your help.
    Best regards,
    Ralf Gorholt

    Hi Ralph,
    Well, if you are wanting to check if anything has been updated before the update button is pressed, using JS, you can use the property of the field 'defaultValue' and compare it to the property 'value'
    i.e. for the text input type
    function isElementChanged( myElement ) {
      var iselementChanged = false;
      var returnVal = false;
      switch ( myElement.type ) {
      case "text" :
        if ( myElement.value != myElement.defaultValue )
          return true;
        break;
    default
         return false;
    }  You could cycle through all elements, by:
    allEls = form.elements;
    for (i=0; i < allEls.length; i++){
      if ( allEls.type != undefined && allEls[i].type.length > 0 && allEls[i].disabled == false ) {
    if (isElementChanged(allElls[i])) {
    //TODO: logic here
    }Ta,<br />Trent

  • APEX vs Forms 6i - Processor/System/Network Overhead

    We have been developing and deploying applications using Forms 6i for some years, have moved to web forms and are now developing in APEX. The IT department of client of ours has asked us to provide the relative performance merits and impact on CPU performance for each of the three technologies with particular focus on the server on which the Oracle database is running, in order to determine a basis for charging.
    Assuming that the application is the same. i.e. There is a common set of PL/SQL commands across the deployment technologies. Would it be true to say that this would be relatively the same for Forms and Web Forms, since these are generally deployed with separate forms or application servers, but would be higher for APEX, since APEX PL/SQL commands are required to build web pages before being sent (in this case) to the Oracle HTTP server? If so, are there any figures available to substantiate this case?
    Taking this one step further. Given that there is a network overhead for each of the deployments (in addition to the database overhead) has anyone conducted an analysis on the relative efficiencies of the three in presenting the same content? Or any insight as to what that might be? This could potentially be offset against an increase in datbase server cycles, if the former is true.
    Thanks very much for your help.
    Regards, Malcolm

    This will be hard to quantify without running your own tests, but based on feedback from other customers, the server resources required for APEX are somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/3 to 1/10 that required for Forms. This is especially true for memory, since every Forms client requires a dedicated server connection whereas APEX uses connection pooling. So, lets say you have 1,000 Forms users with an average memory requirement of 5mb per client (just guessing here), that's 4.8gb of RAM just for client connections. The typical number of sessions in that size APEX deployment is 10-20 = 50-100mb of RAM for client connections. The CPU impact of rendering APEX pages is VERY insignificant compared to the CPU required for most of the queries your developers will write. One of the busiest internal APEX instances has over 200,000 page views per day and is a 4 processor machine.
    Regarding network traffic, I'm not sure but you could measure the Forms traffic with Wireshark. You can probably estimate your average page view for an APEX to be somewhere between 35 and 50kb excluding CSS, JavaScript, and Images which should only need to load on the first page view. I highly doubt either client-server forms or web forms are less than that.
    Thanks,
    Tyler

  • ORDS v3 and APEX tabular form issue

    Hi,
    We encountered strange issue after installing ORDS v3 EA to test, thought I would report this. I'm not sure if its a bug but it seems to be reproducible in our instance.
    Steps:
    1) Install ORDS v3 with Glassfish deployment.
    2) Go to APEX builder -> Page with report (classic or interactive) -> Edit Attributes -> Change data in column attempt to save throws out "ORA-01403: no data found"
    or
    3) Create APEX app -> Build page with DML form and Tabular form -> Edit tabular form attempt to save throws out same error.
    Application error logs shows:
    ORA-20987: APEX - Unable to change column attributes. - ORA-01403: no data found
    WWV_FLOW_SECURITY
    FINAL_EXCEPTION_HANDLER
    Also, I was unable to get RESTFul services working with APEX no matter how I configured ORDS v3. I don't encounter these issues when reverting back to version 1.x , 2.x
    APEX Version: 4.2.6.00.03
    Oracle DB: 11.2.0.3.0
    Glassfish : open source edition 4.1
    Regards,
    -Senthil

    I too am getting ORA-01403 both when trying to save in the builder and when just hitting submit on the tabular form when using standalone EA3. Happens when pointing at 4.1 or 4.2.6. The v2 listeners works fine when pointing to the same applications/pages.
    I asked oracle support whether it is a known EA3 issue but was told to add my observations to the forum.
    cheers

  • APEX - tabular form update

    Hey guys,
    as per client's request, we need to insert rows into db from tabular form even there is no change on the new row. db table is configured to have nullable fields.
    Currently, it won't allow me to do so. Is there any way to force the insert/update without checking if the information on the row is updated?
    Thanks a lot

    You can do it, using manular tabular form.
    When you use automated Tabular Forms, it checks inbuilt global variables, to see row is updated or any new row is created and all necessary fields are keyed in.
    If you don't update an existing row, that row will not be updated..
    If you create/add new empty row and don't key in values, that row will not be inserted as there is no data..
    If you want to do in that manner, make your MRU process on the page to never and write your own manual MRU

    ADD CONSTRAINT CERT_FILES_PK PRIMARY KEY ( FILE_ID ) ;
    ALTER TABLE CERTIFICATES
    ADD CONSTRAINT CERTIFICATES_USER_FILES_FK FOREIGN KEY
    CERT_FILE
    REFERENCES USER_FILES
    FILE_ID
    NOT DEFERRABLE
    What I'm trying to do is to allow users to fill out all the certificate data and upload a file in an APEX form. Once submitted the file should be uploaded in the USER_FILES table and all the fields along with CERT_ID, which is the foreign key pointing to the file in the USER_FILES table to be populated to the CERTIFICATES table. APEX wizard forms are based on one table and I'm unable to build form on both tables.
    That's why I've created a view (V_CERT_FILES) on both tables and using INSTEAD OF trigger to insert/update both tables. I've done this before and updating this kind of views works perfect. Here is where the problem comes, if I'm updating the view all the data is updated correctly, but if I'm inserting into the view all the fields are populated at CERTIFICATES table, but for USER_FILES only the fields FILE_ID and LAST_UPDATE_DATE are populated. The rest three regarding the LOB are missing: BLOB_CONTENT, FILENAME, MIMETYPE. There are no errors when running this from APEX, but If I try to insert into the view from SQLDeveloper, I got this error:
    ORA-22816: unsupported feature with RETURNING clause
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    As far as I know RETURNING clause in not supported in INSTEAD of triggers, although I didn't have any RETURNING clauses in my trigger (body is below).
    Now the interesting stuff, after long tracing I found why this is happening:
    First, insert is executed and the BLOB along with all its properties are uploaded to wwv_flow_file_objects$.
    Then the following insert is executed to populate all the fields except the BLOB and it's properties, rowid is RETURNED, but as we know RETURNING clause is not supported in INSTEAD OF triggers, that's why I got error:
    PARSE ERROR #1918608720:len=266 dep=3 uid=48 oct=2 lid=48 tim=1324569863593494 err=22816
    INSERT INTO "SVE". "V_CERT_FILES" ( "CERT_ID", "CERT_OWNER", "CERT_VENDOR", "CERT_NAME", "BLOB_CONTENT") VALUES (:B1 ,:B2 ,:B3 ,:B4, ,EMPTY_BLOB()) RETURNING ROWID INTO :O0
    CLOSE #1918608720:c=0,e=11,dep=3,type=0,tim=1324569863593909
    EXEC #1820672032:c=3000,e=3168,p=0,cr=2,cu=4,mis=0,r=0,dep=2,og=1,plh=0,tim=1324569863593969
    ERROR #43:err=22816 tim=1324569863593993
    CLOSE #1820672032:c=0,e=43,dep=2,type=1,tim=1324569863594167
    Next my trigger gets in action, sequences are generated, CERTIFICATES table is populated and then USER_FILES, but only the FILE_ID and LAST_UPDATE_DATE.
    Finally update is fired against my view (V_CERT_FILES), reading data from wwv_flow_files it populates BLOB_CONTENT, MIMETYPE and FILENAME fields at the specific rowid in V_CERT_FILES, the one returned from the insert at the beginning. Last, file is deleted from wwv_flow_files.
    I'm using sequences for the primary keys, this is only the body of the INSTEAD OF trigger:
    select user_files_seq.nextval into l_file_id from dual;
    select certificates_seq.nextval into l_cert_id from dual;
    insert into user_files (file_id, filename, blob_content, mimetype, last_update_date) values (l_file_id, :n.filename, :n.blob_content, :n.mimetype, sysdate);
    insert into certificates (cert_id, cert_owner, cert_vendor, cert_name, cert_file) values (l_cert_id, :n.cert_owner, :n.cert_vendor, :n.cert_name, l_file_id);
    I'm surprised that I wasn't able to find a valuable source of information regarding this problem, only MOS note about running SQLoader against view with CLOB column and INSTEAD OF trigger. The solution would be to ran it against base table, MOS ID 795956.1.
    Maybe I'm missing something and that's why I decided to share my problem here. So my question is how do you create this kind of architecture, insert into two tables with a relation between them in APEX ? I read a lot in the Internet, some advices were for creating custom form with APEX API, create a custom ARP, create two ARP or create a PL/SQL procedure for handing the DML?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Sve

    Thank you however I was wondering if there was an example available which uses EJB and persistence.
