Apparently LOTS Of SelectItem and Command Button Questions

Question

There are lots of questions apparently expressing frustration with the radioList, checkboxlist etc. and their inability to work properly with a button.
But there are no proper responses.
The issue is simple:
On page 1 a button is pressed and a dynamically generated LIST becomes the source of a RadioButtonList. One of these radio buttons are checked/ selected and the form submitted and proceeds to page 2.
Unfortunately this simple thing is a rocket science with something that is supposed to be easier to use.
The bug I am encountering is that whenever I press the submit button control goes back to the constructor and since the list is empty it seems to encounter an error and NEVER even reaches the action method.
Another instance is where in a drop down list I select an option and it is simply supposed to redirect to another page but it comes back to the exact same page.
These are basic things which ought to work...

It uses a select many, but a RadioButton list should work the same.
The issue is simple:
On page 1 a button is pressed and a dynamically

to page 2. In that example the DogHelper().getAllTitles() is a lookup via a DAO to a database (ie dynamic).

method. Put a <h:messages/> tag on the page somewhere and see what it says, you're probably getting a conversion/validation error but are not displaying it. If this is the case, then the action will never be called, as you state.
