  • Losing keystrokes in windows 8.1 with browser open

    I'm having a couple weird problems with loss of keystrokes in windows 8.1. Not sure if it's a driver or malware issue.
    Right after I installed windows 8.1 I noticed that if a browser window is open, i lose keystrokes in any application.
    This happens with both Chrome and I.E.
    And the keystrokes that are lost can be in any random edit control, notepad, typing keys into google search, photoshop
    etc.
    And in fact, it's particularly annoying in photoshop because many of photoshop's tools and menus are invoked using alt | shift | ctrl sequences. What often happens is that I use a modifier key such as alt and the keystroke interruption occurs and windows never
    notices that I've taken my finger off the alt key so after that, every keystroke is interpreted as an alt-key sequence until I notice it and re-toggle the alt key.
    Note, this only happens when a browser window is open and even though it made no sense, I swapped keyboards, lol. Problem still occurs.
    I tried uninstalling crashplan and AVG (currently using windows defender).
    I have disabled google-now and all notifications from facebook, etc.
    The reason I know the keystroke loss is from facebook or email messages is that when I had the original problem, it was always accompanied by the audio "Ding" that windows 8.1 gives you when a message comes in. I since disabled audio for windows events
    but it's not actually the audio causing the problem.
    I was not having this problem prior to installing windows 8.1.
    The computer is an i7-3820 with 32gb memory, 256gb ssd, 2tb secondary drive running 64 bit.
    I have run full scans with AVG, Defender and Malware bytes.
    I'm going to try runing a root kit scanner today. What would you recommend my next steps?
    I'm considering just formatting the whole thing and going back to windows 7 pro...
    Any thoughts would be appreciated...
    Update, root kit scanner found nothing.

    Hi,
    I sugegst you check settings under Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use, when a setting under that pane is turned on or turned off, it usually plays a sound or displays a message. sounds like the
    situation you described here.
    Meanwhile, please aslo keep the latest drivers for the keyboard.

  • Lately when using Firefox the mouse no longer works and no links or tabs can be selected. The only way to get the mouse to work is to switch windows with ctrl+tab

    The mouse is completely unavailable, not even able to select anything on the taskbar or start button.
    When this started happening I had to restart firefox, then I tried opening the task manager to see if anything was hogging resources and I found simply opening the task manager freed up the mouse, then I found simply using alt+tab to switch windows did it, then I discovered using alt+tab to cycle through the available windows straight back to firefox does it.

  • Command ~ (tilde) to switch windows stops working

    Well, actually I guess it is command-` since you don't press shift.
    My problem is this command key short cut stopped working. Mac OS 10.4.11 onAlu iMac with 4gb ram. It had been working, but now I noticed it stopped working.
    It never worked on my G4 tower but did work on my wifes iBook. It didn't work in my buddies tower but does work on my dads iMac G5.
    What the heck? How does a command key shortcut stop working. I get a audible bonk alert when I try to do command-` to switch windows. It used to work.
    Any ideas?

    Have you checked your keybindings? +(System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts)+ Is there a checkmark next to "Move focus to next window in active application"? Maybe your modifier keys have been altered? +(System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard > Modifier Keys...)+

  • Why is the "streaming' Adobe Photoshop only for students on Chrome OS or  WIndows?

    Considering Adobe hasn't acknowledged the Linux crowd that has been petitioning for a port for years, the announcement of "streaming' Adobe Photoshop for only students on Chrome OS or  Windows doesn't surprise me in the least.  Is this a beta only decision or is there another reason you've given the Linux crowd a blindeye?
    It boggles my mind why I pay $50 a month to get snubbed and only be able to run your apps in a VM. I've tried to jump ship and find alternatives, but in America's corporate world you find that alternatives can't handle the proprietary design assets handed to you by creatives.

    I really do like Adobe tools but the way they select platforms to support doesn't make sense to me.

  • [SOLVED][KDE, intel] Screen goes gray when switching windows

    Hello,
    on my EEE netbook, since the xorg update, I guess --noticed today, as I use it for school only --, the screen goes gray after I switch windows via alt+tab. This does not happen every time, but eventually it occures. In that case the whole screen has color of not yet painted window, and the DE is seemingly not responding to anything, I can still move my mose though and cursor moves too. Switching to text console works, but xserver restart is needed to get things back to normal.
    I have been using graphics system raster, but change to default didn't solved the issue. The same goes for -lcd font filters. System is up-to-date and uses some SELinux packages from the AUR if that matters, but it should not, as they are not graphics nor DE related.
    Would you have any sugestions? I should not be doing any potentially risky operations till thursday, as I need the computer for school and don't have any other available.
    Thank you.
    Will happily provide additional information, if you specify it.
    EDIT: The situation is simmilar as when I run a program, first a fullscreen window is painted gray, and when everything is loaded its content is painted. This lasts few second in case of big applications like Kontact. In the case of mentioned bug it is like the content of window never painted.
    EDIT: So I recompiled bespin-svn, as I remembered, that this package likes to cause trobles, when it is older, and I wanted to mark this solved, as it behaved during the day, but just few minutes ago, the problem happend again.
    EDIT: I don't understand it. On monday it happed several times during day. On tuesday it happend once. Since wednesday it didn't happend. Sould I start to beleave in ghosts?

    Ok, happend again several times today. Didn't happen at any other PC, but I do not have other Intel based, in case it is graphics related.
    As for log (not like I have an idea what to look for) I have error loading fbdev module and some touchpad errors in xorg.log (not imediatelly after the problem), and some Networkmanager warnings.
    Damn. Now I failed three times in a row to switch from konsole to rekonq in order to copy those logs. Anyway this is tail -n 50 everything.log (right now X11 screen is just gray and mouse cursor). SELinux can be ignored as it is set permissive.

    Before i could switch windows in the same program with cmd+< button. This does not work anymore. Also tried cmd+' and many more.

    command-tilde is how to do it.

  • Switching windows in vim

    I'm trying to learn a bit in vim and have discovered that you can open multiple windows. The book I'm reading says you can switch between windows by hitting ctrl-w. On my mac hitting ctrl-w pops up a window that asks "Do you want to close this window?"
    anybody know how I can switch windows in vim on a mac?

    Ah, I see. I had the ctrl key mapped to the command key. I mapped it back to it's default in Mac OS and now it works just fine.

  • Switch windows within program in text edit in yosemite

    When I started using Mac (back with 10.4 or someting) you could switch windows within programs using cmd+< or cmd+shift+< (cmd+>). This worked for every program, and I see it as an essential core to how OSX handles it's programs windows. And it's a really feature, IMO.
    However, some versions back (I don't remember if it was 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9) someone changed this in Mail. When writing an email, the shortcut cmd+< changes the indent level. cmd+shift+< still changes the window. This is VERY frustrating. When I noticed this, I thought "alright, whoever came up with this idea should get fired!" Well guess what? He or she wasn't. This person still works at Apple and has now got his or her hands on Text Edit. In Text Edit in Yosemite, these shortcuts zooms in and out! And there is no longer any shortcut to change the windows within Text Edit. I'll say it again: Please fire this person before he or she destroys more! And make sure to change back so that cmd+< works for all programs.

    Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
    Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Any way to apply AppleScript into subfolder for windows properties?

    I'm using the AppleScript below to set window's position and columns' widths to my liking. But I can only one window at a time. Is there a way to apply this script to all the subfolders? Automator can set window view to subfolders but can't set window's position and columns' widths.
    Any help or suggestion? Thanks
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set bounds of Finder window 1 to {top, left, window width, window height}
    select Finder window 1
    set width of column id name column of list view options of Finder window 1 to 450
    set width of column id modification date column of list view options of Finder window 1 to 150
    set width of column id size column of list view options of Finder window 1 to 100
    end tell

    You can open Finder windows for all of the subfolders of the front window, then loop through each one making your settings. Since this approach will also change the settings for any other open Finder windows, in my example script I just close all but the front window. Your example script doesn't use correct terminology for the bounds of Finder windows, so change the numbers I used for the bounds as desired:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;

    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFEE80;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    set {TheLeft, TheTop, TheRight, TheBottom} to {50, 50, 900, 500} -- a Finder window bounding rectangle

    try -- skip if no window
    set TheWindows to (count Finder windows)
    if TheWindows is greater than 1 then -- close other windows

    log errmess
    end try
    repeat with SomeWindow in (get Finder windows)
    set bounds of SomeWindow to {TheLeft, TheTop, TheRight, TheBottom}
    set width of column id name column of list view options of SomeWindow to 450
    set width of column id modification date column of list view options of SomeWindow to 150

  • Keep Preview playing when switching windows?

    Is there any possible way to keep Preview playing the file when switching windows? For example, pressing the space bar on .mp3 file begins playing it in Preview, however when switching windows, the preview pauses until you go back to the finder window. This is annoying when browsing .mp3's to play while doing other things. Any ideas?

    I think you mean QuickLook, not Preview. And no, QuickLook is not intended to work that way--it is a way to do just what its name says: provide a quick looksee at the files in an open Finder window.
    As for ideas: why not just open them in iTunes?
    If you don't want to add them to iTunes, you can put the folder with the mp3s into Column View, make sure the box for "show preview column" is checked in View Options, then click directly on the icon for the file in the preview column (as your mouse moves over the icon, you will see the stylish play button appear on top of the icon). It will continue to play no matter what else you are doing.

  • Programs crash when switching windows

    Hi, I have had this problem for a while now (about a month after I installed Windows 8.1 on my fresh new computer).
    The issue is when I switch windows (the odds are much greater if I minimise or use the show desktop button in the bottom right), the program may not respond, and require to be forcefully closed in task manager (or spamming the X
    button) to close, then reopened.
    This is not normal behaviour and is starting to get onto my nerves since I constantly have to restart my browser when switching between my IDE and it.
    Just recently it has started closing a particular background program too (Logitech Gaming Software) which is why I am now contacting support to resolve this issue.

    This is my step(s) to reproduce the issue.
    I suspect this may have something to do with using an SSD and having a harddrive with my programs on. I modified the %programfiles% system variable and installed all new programs into that location.

    Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
    Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
    Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
    Save all Events in Custom View As...
    Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
    Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
    Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
    Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
    If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The work around is
    to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do
    Press Win+"R" and input regedit
    Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

  • Automator switching windows problem

    I think by reading through the forum i found that my loop is not continuously going through because of the switching windows. But for every single one of my actions it says (Bring the window “World of Warcraft” to the front.) I've read that usually it says this when you first click an application to show that you switched windows and you simply delete the first step to do it but for me all of my actions say that so im not sure how to switch into the application without it saying this.

    Activating an application shouldn't interrupt the Automator workflow. What actions are in your workflow, and is the input getting set correctly? It looks like you may be using the *Watch Me Do* action, just be aware that scripting window items and mouse clicks are going to be tricky at best.

  • All browser chrome (tab switcher, awesomebar, toolbars) sometimes turn invisible when window is inactive

    All the browser chrome including the tab switcher, awesomebar, firefox menu, and toolbars, but not the standard minimize/unmaximize/close buttons, will sometimes turn invisible while the window is inactive.
    Clicking back into the window restores them. I have a dual monitor setup, and firefox is maximized on one monitor while I'm working on other applications in the other.
    This is an intermittent problem, and has been happening for about a week now, starting from a fresh install of Firefox with a clean profile.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
    *Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
