Applet using JVM 1.5.0_06 causes GDI Object Leaks

Hi,
Since the release of 1.5.0_06 our applet has developed a GDI Object leak. Basically, our applet draws on a panel when ever an update is available. The previous versions of the JVM seem fine and th e GDI Objects are stable, but this new version eats the GDIs up really quickly, and never releases them.
The problem occurs when the applet repaints itself. Calling repaint() or paint() from code works ok with no leaks but as soon as the applet is forced to repaint because of a resize, or because another window has moved over it the GDIs go up by multiples of 10.
Here is some sample code:

        String val = d.toString();
        int width = fm.stringWidth(val);
        int height = fm.getHeight();
        int x = (bounds.width - width) /2;

Hi there.
I've found this page by googling.
I am not a Java developer, but am using a third party java applet on my web page for mapping.
Funnily enough, I've been trying to hunt down a memory leak thats occuring in IE (not any other browser).
It only occurs when the applet is physically visible on the page, and the user is using the Sun JVM (1.5.0_06). The GDI object count increases every time I mouseover a link in a tree.
This does not occur with the MS JVM.
Unfortunately I do not have access to the applet source code, but I'm wondering if its related to your problem.
Have you had any success on this?
Thanks.

  • GDI object leak using an applet with Java Plugin 1.4.2_02

    We have an application where we use an applet to draw some graphs. The applet has an interface to update the graphical data using Javascripts. Now duing every graphical update of the graph there a leak of the GDI objects. Over time the display on the machine gets frozen due to lack of resources.
    This problem is happening with IE 6.0 using Sun Java Plug-in 1.4.2_02.
    Has anybody else seen this problem. Is there any work aorund for this issue.

    The code is not leaking. This has been verified.
    The problem has been fixed in 1.5.0 (5.0) Beta 2 version but I don't know then final release of this is going to be. Also using a beta version now is not an option.
    The 1.4.2_04 did not fix the GDI leak that I am seeing, I was hoping it would.

  • CrystalReportViewer 2008 does not release GDI objects after closing.

    We need help in resolving an issue with a WinForms application we have developed that makes use of the Crystal Reports 2008 viewer control to both generate reports based on various parameters the user supplies and to view these same reports having been previously saved in crystal 2008 format.
    The issue we are seeing is that GDI objects are being created during the report generation process but some are not being released when the report viewer window is closed down. This leads to the system running out of GDI objects (seen by using the Windows task manager) and ultimately the application crashes. It is only when the application is closed completely that GDI resources are returned to the system.
    In an effort to isolate the cause of this problem we created a much simplified WinForms application that simply allowed us to systematically open and close a WinForm  that contains a CrystalReportViewer  to display one of our example reports. We found that the behaviour is the same for this application too.
    Browsing the crystal reports forums reveals there have been a few questions about u201Cmemory leaksu201D like this (see "Thread: CrystalReportViewer memory usage increases until out of memory" as an example) and there has been a good deal of talk about manually "disposing" of report documents and viewers but trying this does not correct this issue
    The extent of the "GDI Object leak" does depend upon the kind of report that is pulled in. One report we have that is 360 pages long and contains graphs and tables of data leaks 390 object per test iteration.
    Is this a known issue with the Crystal Report Viewer and if so is there an update or a workaround available?
    Are we performing all the correct initialisation prior to using the viewer? For example we are supplying the report to the viewer through a ReportDocument object; is there something special we need to do with that?
    Do we have to do anything special when closing the viewer?
    Could it be to do with the design of our reports? We are using the Crystal Reports 2008 editor (sp1) to do this design.
    We urgently need to help in understanding why this is happening and to be able implement a solution that will address this problem.
    I have provided the following code snippets of this sample application to give a flavour of what we are doing and hopefully you can see that it is not complex. The example shows the crystal viewer being presented with a ReportDocument as a Report Source ... this is how our proper application does things but if you try supplying the filename of the crystal report directly, the problem is the same.
    This C# code was written using Visual Studio 2008.

    Hi Martyn,
    I tested this and found after using this code to re-initialize the report viewer there we still 400 GDI objects not getting released. This may or may not be a CR issue. Still testing.
    Try this also, I simply created a close button but you should be able to do this in your form close method also depending on how you do it:
            private void CloseReport_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
                rptClientDoc.Close();
                crystalReportViewer1.Dispose();
                GC.Collect();
                this.crystalReportViewer1 = new CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms.CrystalReportViewer();
                InitializeComponent();
                crystalReportViewer1.ShowExportButton = true;
                crystalReportViewer1.EnableRefresh = true;
                crystalReportViewer1.Controls.Count.ToString();
                crystalReportViewer1.BackColor.IsNamedColor.ToString();
                crystalReportViewer1.EnableToolTips = true;
                crystalReportViewer1.Refresh();
    The issue has now been tracked - Problem_Report:  ADAPT01301248

  • Could not load applet in a browser using jre 1.6.0_06

    Hi,
    I am facing problem with loading applets when the browser uses jre 1.6.0_06.
    Not able to understand what actually the problem is, I tried to check with a small applet that would simply print Hello World on the java console. Even this applet also could not be loaded on the browser. I could load this applet in the test environment of eclipse, but not able to load it on the browser when the applet is deployed on Tomcat.
    We have no problems in loading applet if the browser is using an earlier version of the jre.
    One more thing we have found out that, if we change the SSL cipher suite of the ssl.conf file such that it can support weaker protocols, my applet works with jre 1.6.0_06 also.
    But one thing we could not understand is that why changes in SSL cipher suite of the ssl.conf file creates problem in loading the applet, only in case the browser is using jre 1.6.0_06. I mean to say that changes in the SSL cipher suite does not create any problem in loading the applet if my browser is using an earlier version of jre 1.6.0_06.
    Please help me out as I don't have any clue regarding this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    We have found a wor around for this problem.
    The following option has been unchecked and the applet could be loaded.
    Go to java control panel
    Under the Advanced Tab
    Under the Security section
    Uncheck the last option "Use TLSv1.0".
    This makes the applet work.
    But could not understand as why this is creating a problem.
    We have tried to include TLSv1.0 in the cipher suite of our apache server, while keeping the above option in java plugin control panel checked, but even that did not solve the problem.
    Please help me of how should I proceed for this problem, as I am totally stuck.
    Thank you.

  • Quake level in an applet compatible JVM 1.1

    Here is a Quake 3d level rendered in an applet with 3DzzD API
    NB: the model has been converted from quake to 3ds, this result in visual imperfection (smooth groups are wrong) more visible on soft engine as it use phong shader, also perf maybe not as good as they should be due to the fact that BSP model produce a lot of unecessary face for 3DzzD engine and conversion produce curved surface with a fixed quality.
    Note that for now there is only windows native libraries on the server and so this demo will not work in hardware mode for other platform than window, this will be updated soon
    Once started it will be rendered using the 3DzzD software renderer, to switch to Hardware mode click the applet and press H

    as the software engine may be slow, here is the same applet with a smaller size

    I have a problem with a applet with is embedded in my webpage ans which I am using to setup a socket connection to a server. I am communicating from the webpage to the applet with live connect to send data, and from the applet to the page with live connect for the received data.
    This works fine most of the time, but occasionaly at the customers site i get the error:

  • Japanese text display problems in applet using plugin

    Hi,
    We've been beating our heads against the wall on this one for quite some time, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Our product uses a third party applet (Kavachart from Visual Engineering) to display graphical statistics from our database. We are currently localizing our product to support english and japanese. With Japanese enabled, all pages use euc-jp encoding. The problem we are running into is in the display of japanese text inside this applet in IE 5 and NS 4.7x when using the java plugin (1.3 or 1.4). If the default jre of the browsers are used, the text in the applet renders fine.
    On a suggestion from the supprot folks at Visual Engineering, I modified our code to set the defaultFont parameter on the applet to "serif, 14, 1". With this set, the text in the applet renders ok in IE, but NS on windows and unix is still broken. Given that we are doing all these tests on machines running a native japanese OS, it's not even clear to me why setting the defaultFont should even be required, but at this point, I'll take anything :-)
    Has anyone else run into this and either solved it or proven that a solution is not feasible? I'm at my wits end here....
    Thanks in advance,

    Synchronicity Inc.

    If you are using different java plugin, you need to install the international version of the JRE; otherwise, some characters may not be able to display correctly since some of the properties files are missing.
    As for Visual Engineering's suggestion. I don't know why they tell you to set the default font on the applet because it may cause the browser to use the font specified. Your applet works on IE because it will try to use the best font to match the web page's content. For NS anything less then 6.0 (technology based on Mozilla), they never display web page correctly especially if you did what VE suggest.
    If you are running the applet on the native langauge OS with the international version of the JRE installed, the applet should display correctly without setting the default font. If it is not the native langauge OS, first you need to install the international version of the JRE and have the fonts that are able to display the language the applet use.

    Huh?
    How exactly are you embedding IE into your app?
    Normally IE is a seperate process and in that case nothing that your original JVM is doing will have any impact on that.
    Of course the environment space that the spawned IE is being run with could very well impact it.
    Of course if you are actually embedding it in your app versus spinning up another process then that would not apply. But off hand I can't ever recall seeing an article that suggested IE could be embedded in another application.
    And what do you mean the applet is trying to run a jvm?
    An applet runs in a JVM. The only way an applet (or just a java app) can run a jvm is by using Runtime.exec() or via JNI. Is that what you are doing?

  • Swing Applet using JSObject.getWindow can not use javaFX

    I have a Swing Applet that I will like to extend with some javaFX 2.0.3 abilities.
    The Swing Applet uses the JSObject.getWindow method which is part of plugin.jar.
    When I add javaFX I am not able to compile my application as jfxrt.jar also has a JSObject implementation, but without the getWindow method.
    Is there any way I can extend my existing applet with javaFX?

    The order of dependencies is probably not the issue here but rather that there are two classes with the same fully qualified name which causes problems if the signatures differ

  • Applet Caching - JVM and MVM

    Hi,
    I am new to Java and I need to enable caching a java applet archived in a jar/cab file. The caching should work irrespective of whether the User enables the Sun JVM or Microsoft VM in his IE.
    Here is the code I have in my html:-
    <applet width="1" height="1"
         codebase = "/advisor/classessource/"
         code="LauncherApplet.class" name="Launcher"
    MAYSCRIPT VIEWASTEXT id=Applet1>

         <param name="ImagArchive" value="0">
    </applet>
    When I enable Sun JVM in IE - I notice the caching works. I'm checking the time stamp Documents and Settings/mylogin/Application Data/Sun/Java/Deployment/cache/javaapi/v1.0/jar
    But when I enable Microsoft VM - The cab file is always getting downloaded into the Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files
    Could you please tell me how do make it cache with MVM enabled?
    Thanks,
    G

    The document you point to explains caching JAR files in 1.3. Can I also cahce GIF files the same way? Does the plug-in caching mechanism work with any file type? If I cache a GIF file, how to I reference that in my code so the Applet uses the cached version instead of the one on the server, or does it implicitly know this?
    Thanks for any insight.

  • Applet using NetBeans 3.6

    I have just started using NetBeans 3.6, and I'm new to applets. I have a sample applet which runs OK with all browsers when I use the .class file already supplied by the creator of the applet.
    However, after compiling within NetBeans 3.6 (J2SE 1.4), it runs only when using the AppletViewer within the NetBeans. It does not execute when I shift the browser to Internet Explorer within NetBeans, or when I try to do it through a HTML file outside NetBeans.
    I noticed that this behaviour starts after creating the .class file with NetBeans. If I create the .class file using the javac compiler in a Solaris computer I have access to, it executes both in the Solaris machine (Netscape browser) and in a PC.
    Does anybody have an idea of what is going on? Thanks.

    In the package (folder) which the applet Java exists there is an HTML of the same name. This is used by the AppletViewer to define parameters and settings for the applet when it's loaded. Try viewing the applet using that HTML page.
    Right mouse click on your applet Java file and make sure your properties in NetBeans for the debug is set to Applet Debugging. By defailt NetBeans will assume a Java file is not an applet and will try to debug it as a java application.
    However, after compiling within NetBeans 3.6 (J2SE
    1.4), it runs only when using the AppletViewer within
    the NetBeans. It does not execute when I shift the
    browser to Internet Explorer within NetBeans, or when
    I try to do it through a HTML file outside NetBeans.You can enable the displaying of the Java console for the Explorer Java plug-in. This will allow you to see any exceptions happening which might be causing your problem. If no exceptions are happening, then it's likely the class path in the packages don't match where your running it from.
    I noticed that this behaviour starts after creating
    the .class file with NetBeans. If I create the .class
    file using the javac compiler in a Solaris computer I
    have access to, it executes both in the Solaris

    I wrote an applet using Swing and compiled it using JavaSDK 1.4.x. I also installed the 1.4.x JRE for both of my test browsers. In Mozilla 1.1 the applet displays properly all the time. In IE6 SP1 it sometimes works as intended but sometimes the applet simply stops working, as per my Java Console somewhere after invoking the "start" method. Parts of the applet simply become gray and when I resize it - I have a JFrame in my applet - the whole JFrame becomes gray and does not respond to input nor it redraws itself. Shutting down IE does not close the JFrame(although the java console reports normal program termination and cleanup) and the only way to close it is through the task manager. I am using Windows 98SE btw.
    Does it sound similiar to your problem? It happens ONLY with IE, not with Mozilla. Anybody has an idea on what it could be? I doubt there's an error in my code...

  • Html file to run an Applet using swings in 1.4.1 or 1.3.1

    Can anyone send me an html document to launch the applet in a browser. I have very basic html, but I need one that uses the appropriate plug-in and that has parameters such as height, width, etc. My applet uses tabbed panes, dialog boxes and comboboxes. It works well with appletviewer, but does not work in IE or Netscape.
    Thank you for your help
    here is what I am using which does does show anything but a grey screen

  • How to set JMS clients to use JVM Invocation layer

    Hi,
    I'm not sure if this JBoss specific (but I'm assuming it's not) so I'll be asking it here. How can I set my JMS clients and Message-Driven Beans to use JVM Invocation layer since the clients and queues will reside in the same JVM.
    Thanks in advance.

    May be that explains why I couldn't successfully integrate ActiveMQ with JBoss. I was using the 3.0 version. I'll try again once I find the time.
    Anyway, do you know how to set JBoss JMS clients and MDBs to use JVM invocation or transport layer instead of UIL2?
    I'm not sure if what I've done is correct But here's what I've done.
    For jvm-il-service.xml, I changed the JNDI reference from "ConnectionFactory" to "JVMILConnectionFactory" since the default service uses "ConnectionFactory". Then I used that reference as my JNDI look up in my JMS client. I'm just not sure how to do this with MDBs. I think I should add an entry in the ejb descriptor file but I need someone to confirm.
    Thanks.
