AppleWorks won't start - but no spinning wheel

My problem is similar to the one posted by davehigh, but I don't have a spinning wheel.
I can't open the only word processing document I have - doubleclicking doesn't work and dragging it onto the Appleworks Icon doesn't work.
Double clicking the Appleworks application won't the launch the application either.
Restarting has not helped so far.
What happens is that the dock makes a split second adjustment as if it's going to make room for the appleworks icon, but then changes it mind. And nothing happens.
I was considering re-installing Appleworks (as per another thread), but wanted to see if anyone might know an easier fix. I don't trust myself to reinstall anything just yet.
Thanks

Hi Fletcher,
I'd still start with the suggestions in the thread started by davehigh.
Regards,
Barry

  • Won't Start - Apple Logo / Spinning Wheel

I did a software update on my computer, when it restarted to install it said there was an error. Now the MBP won't get past the apple logo and spinning wheel.
I have tried the pram reset with no luck, and tried to start in safe mode with no luck. When I try these I get a gray bar under the spinning wheel which begins to fill then goes away.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

    hi everyone,
the same happened to me. I did as proposed here. I wanted to reinstall Mac OS X from CD, but it never could find the hard disk. I tryed to use the Disk-repair utility. At the first time, I was not abele to use the "repair" function, so I just
had a check run. The repair-fuction did not finish properly, but I got the information, that there were too many threads ... ? At the second try, I could'n even use the check-function anymore. Is there a way to save something?

  • Upgrading 4 different macs - 10.8.2 - ALL 4 hangs with apple logo but before spinning wheel

Crazy! Never happened to me EVER, not even close and I've been using and administrating macs since 89. Upgraded all my macs, incl the MBP of my nephew; MBP Retina, MacBook Unibody (hybriddisk), MBP 17" + Mac Mini (thunderbolt) ALL ultimately needed reformating drive and fresh install to get up & running again, hours of extra work! All identical freeze displaying apple logo but no spinning wheel. Could start all in recover mode but could not from there remedy whatever fault there was. 3 of the macs more or less (Retina & MacBook) identical equipped software-wise but MBP 17" very sparse software (belonging to computer-"illiterate" so no fancy software. The latter had Lion so in that case as opposed th eother macs this wasn't an incremental 10.8.1->10.8.2 upgrade.
I have upgraded all macs fresh via internet so no upgrade via downloaded install file on for ex usb-unit.
Any ideas?? I'm really frustrated and disappointed, this cannot be a freak occurence!

I have no helpful reply to give you except moral support: I'm having the exact same problem (going from 10.6.8 to 10.8.2 on a 2010 MacBook Pro.) I have tried reboots, reloads, disk repair, permission repair (between each attempt I reloaded from a clone).  Also tried loading it, then repairing from Recovery mode, then restarting. Endless spinning wheel at the Apple logo as 10.8.2 attempts its first startup every time.

  • Magsafe has no light, MBP starts but just spins on the Apple Logo, more...

    This is a friends 17" 2.16 model
Magsafe has no light but works, MBP starts but just spins on the Apple Logo, the battery has no charge. I have a 2.4ghz model so checked the charger... it works AND lights up on mine. The battery (a replacement battery, 8 months old) does not take a charge in my mbp (had it installed for 30"). I connected via firewire in Target mode - it didn't mount so I tried to "repair" the connected HD via Disk Utility.... after about 5" a simple message came up saying that it was unable to repair the drive.
Ran Tech Tool Pro and only managed to run scan blocks on it which at least mounted the drive so I could retrieve files etc but no other diagnostic would work.
Did a SMC on it - no change.
When I tried starting it and held down any combination of alt, control, shift keys etc it would just immediately go into shutdown.
Anybody have an idea what might be wrong and how much it might cost to repair?

Does your friend's 2.16 MBP have the original hard drive? If so, the hard drive could be failing. It would be 3 years old, and the useful life of a hard drive is 3-5 years.
Have you tried your known good battery in your friend's MBP? If the battery won't charge with a known good adaptor and a known good battery after a SMC, then there could be a problem with the Left I/O Board.
I have heard of a dying hard drive affecting the optical drive as well. If TTP was not able to do any diagnostic test, I am wondering if the problem might be with the optical drive.
The worst possibility would be a bad logic board.
Have you tried a PRAM reset?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
These are just some guesses. With a known good battery and adaptor cable, you may be able to determine if the Left I/O Board is OK. However, you may end up needing to go to Apple or an AASP for a real diagnosis. If you are anywhere near an Apple Store, you can make an appointment at the genius bar and get an evaluation for free. If it's just a hard drive or the left I/O Board, the repair should not be too much. If the logic board, it could be quite expensive.
    Good luck!

  • I've asked this before, but the spinning wheel is still there and sometimes it freezes up to where I have to shut it down manually.

I've asked this before, but the spinning wheel is still there and sometimes it freezes up to where I have to shut it down manually.  Can someone tell me how to fix this!! I dont really know how to find certain places to check on things.

The feature media.windows-media-foundation.enabled by default is true, did you have to set it back? Please also check out version 29 it just came out this week.

  • Appleworks won't start

I thought I was having memory issues with my computer and bought an external hard drive and added more ram. I have moved files to the ext. HD and restarted and now have 18G free space on Mac HD. Appleworks still will not start up. I tried reinstalling from restore disks but double clicking the Install icon won't start up that program to custom install applications. Other programs open fine - ichat, preview, imovie, quicken, etc. Any idea what is wrong and how to fix?

I thinks it's quite possible that you have run into the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. Reinstalling AppleWorks doesn't fix it. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.

  • Airbook won't turn off. Spinning wheel

Airbook won't shut off. Blank screen and spinning wheel. Re-started several times but no luck. Did a hard shut off also.

Determine if it still occurs if you start your Mac in Safe Mode:
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Note that a Mac does not behave normally in Safe Mode. Screen redraws won't be as smooth, certain network functions are disabled, and some programs (iTunes for example) will not work at all. Read the above link for a more thorough description. Restarting your Mac normally will restore its previous environment.
If your MacBook Air shuts down normally after starting it in Safe Mode, it's a clue that will advance troubleshooting. The cause must still be determined though.

  • Just upgraded to firefox 4 and it won't start but it says it's running.

I just recently upgraded to firefox 4 and it won't work. I was enjoying the lastest update on firefox 3 and it was working fine, but when i upgraded to 4, the problems started. Every time i click on the icon, the mouse turns into the loading wheel for a few seconds and then goes back, but firefox doesn't load up. Nothing happens. I have tried restarting the computer, but that does nothing. I then tried uninstalling it, but it says firefox is still running so it can't uninstall. Even after restarting my computer, it still says it's running. I have tried everything, but it just won't start, and I can't do anything because it claims to still be running.

I just had a similar problem and it reminded me of trying to install a logitech wireless mouse a while back. Nothing I could do to make it recognize the driver... until I ran across a website that told me that antivirus and firewalls might prevent it. So... AVG Free just updated itself earlier today... FF4 would only startup once after reboot, then start and show in task mgr but no window(s)... Uninstalled AVG new version. FF4 starts up every time. Reinstalled older version of AVG Free and now everything seems to be OK again. Hope this helps!

  • Macbook Pro won't bootup past grey spinning wheel, disk repair done

    Hi,
Earlier today I tried to install something and found that for some reason whenever I clicked on the lock there was a slight flicker but no password box came up. I checked all my admin settings but again I was unable to do anything. So I restarted, and then my headache really began. The laptop would not boot up past the grey spinning wheel screen. I performed all the steps that are suggested elsewhere on here, tried resetting PRAM etc etc. I then managed to boot up in disk mode, opened disk utility and verified my hard drive, it said there were issues so I repaired. Thinking everything was all good to go I restarted but got the same issue again. Went to disk mode again and verified my HD just to make sure, again it said the disk was fine yet it still won't go past the grey spinning wheel screen! Please help...

Sounds like it's time for an Archive & Install of your OS. If you were able to boot at all, I'd suggest applying the OS X 10.6.4 Combo Update in hopes of overwriting whatever file(s) is/are damaged with new copies of them, but since you can't boot, that's not an option.

  • Imac freezes on start up no spinning wheel

Hello! I have an iMac g5 , os x 10.5.8.  i restarted my PPC once. It normally shut down but the problem is that when it turned back on, it freezed at the apple logo. Yet there is NO spinning wheel. I kept looking on the internet for solutions . I tried command + R or command + S yet nothing happened. What should i do?

    Your g5 doesn't support command + r.
command + s  Brings the machine up in single user mode.  A bad sign if command + s doesn't work.  Bad hd or corrupt file system.
Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.
Starting up the startup manager will give you a quick assurance your g5 logic board is "goodish".
The startup manager will list all of your bootable partitions then give you a choice of which to boot.  Hold down the option key then power on. Continue holding down the option key until you see the startup manager. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd or disc. Click on right arrow key.
If startup manager is working, your harddrive is probably bad.  Try a newer hd.  Boot from an external hd.
    I suspect disk corruptions.
verify & repair your startup drive
To verify & repair you file system on the startup drive, you will need to run disk utility from you installation DVD.
This article  will tell you how to get to disk utility.  Once in a disk utility, you can go and attempt to recover the disk.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
To repair your startup drive, you will need to run disk utility from your startup DVD.
Mac OS X 10.4: About the utilities available on the Mac OS X 10.4 Install DVD
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2055
How to run disk utility from your startup DVD.
Insert your  startup DVD  into your reader.  Power down your machine.  Hold down to the c key.  Power on your machine.  This will bootup your startup DVD.
This will bring you to a panel asking you for your language.  Pick your language.
You you come to the Install Mac OS panel.  Do not install.
Click on Utilities menu item.  This will give you a pulldown list of utilities.
    Click on the disk utility.
You are now in disk utility.  Pick your disk.  Click on repair it should be on the lower right of the panel.
Once the repair completes successfully, you should update your permissions.

  • Firefox won't start, profile manager won't start, but firefox.exe shows in processes list (task manager)

Firefox will not start, even though it is listed in my processes in task manager. Can't get profile manager to start either.
I have tried the following to no avail:
    - try to start FF in Safe Mode, doesn't load
    - started Windows Vista in Safe Mode, FF still does not load
    - turned off Kaspersky AV, FF still does not load
    - uninstalled FF, cleaned out user/####/AppData/Mozilla/Firefox folder, as well as ProgramFiles/Mozilla/Firefox folder, and cleaned our Registry manually from all references to Firefox. Downloaded FF 3.6.3, installed. still does not load
    - whatever i seem to do, does not fix the problem. When I try to start Firefox, no window appears. I can see the process starting in my task manager. I can "end process" and try to start the program again by double-clicking program icon. Process starts in task manager, but no app window appears.
I am frustrated and have just wasted 2+hours of my night trying to get this to work. Downloaded Google Chrome, unless there is a fix for FF (which I would prefer to use), i will have to switch to Chrome.
I can't pinpoint when this trouble started, but may have been after a recent Windows Update. I already did a System Restore to a restore point about 5 days ago (the oldest one available to me, and I believe that was before the FF trouble started). This has not helped either.
I have run a full virus scan with Kaspersky and a Full scan with Windows Defender. Nothing came up.
Anyone else been able to find a solution to this?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Less than a week ago ==
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.375.86 Safari/533.4

I found a way to make it work somehow but not really fixing the error... one day when I got really pissed off because FF just won't open, I clicked the icon and killed the enter button, then multiple FF windows appeared. I tried to open it with just a single hit of the enter or double clicking but it won't work anymore, but repeatedly clicking the enter button (mine works with just 3 hits, sometimes 6) seem to open it. And until now, I have no technical explanation for this.

  • [solved] xorg proglem - won't start, but no error

    Hi folks!
I'm new to Arch, my first installation, but I used to use Gentoo in the past. Got a problem with making X to run. I followed the guide from the wiki, but I didn't manage it to work.
I'm using nVidia drivers from 173xx branch (GF 5900XT). Hal is working properly, I hope - /etc/rc.d/restart successes w\o errors.
At first, I tried to run X without xorg.conf and it complained about missing 'nv' and 'vesa' (i hope) modules. Then, after running nvidia-configure (/etc/X11/xorg.conf was successfully created) and startx - screen blanks (no nVidia logo shown) and after ~3 seconds it comes back with massage "waiting for X server to shut down". In /var/log/Xorg.0.log there were no lines starting with (EE).
Then I tried to configure X with "X -configure". After making new config and replacing the older one at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and running X with command startx (as user), it complained about missing type1 and truetype modules ((EE) lines as far as I remember). After installing missing packages/modules:
    http://dpaste.com/60888/
it still won't start. Screen blanks, no nVidia logo shown, and later comes back with well known screen ( usual text... look over /var/log/Xorg.0.log for more details...). Only message after default text id "waiting for X server to shut down", with no (WW) nor (EE) lines above.
    More useful data comes:
    Xorg.0.log
    http://dpaste.com/60883/
    xorg.conf
    http://dpaste.com/60885/
    tail of dmesg
    http://dpaste.com/60887/
If you need anything else to see, request!
Any idea? To me, it looks like nvidia driver bug or some xorg bug (or maybe just a misconfiguration)
In ~/.xinitrc stays only "exec startfluxbox", but even with empty file, situation is the same.
    Thank you in advance,
    Daniel

    Hello, welcome to Arch!
You should read about the new feature of Xorg, input hotplugging: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … otplugging
A more detailed explanation can be found here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
Be sure to copy the fdi file in the correct directory.
Since I am using also the 173xx branch, here is my xorg.conf, hope it will be useful for you:
    http://dpaste.com/60927/
EDIT: Not 100% sure but I seem to recall that the nvidia driver has some problems when you don't set the default depth. Add that line

  • Photoshop CC 2014 won't start but  I see Photoshop.exe running in Task Manager!

I just updated Photoshop CC 2014 today - October 6, 2014, and it won't start. I does not give any warnings or errors. Windows 7 Pro. If I check Windows Task Manager, I see Photoshop.exe running, but it never opens on my desktop.

Just so anyone that sees this will know the sequence of events:
I updated Photoshop CC 2014 and many other CC updates today
I restarted my machine (Windows 7 Pro)
    Clicked Photoshop Start Icon
Photoshop did not start, but Photoshop.exe appears in Windows Task Manager (WTM) under Processes tab (approx. 8 MB of Memory used)
If I click Photoshop Start Icon multiple times, multiple EXEs appear in WTM
Tried right-clicking Photoshop.exe(s) and Ending Processes, then Running Photoshop again (same result)
Restarted my machine a second time
    Now Photoshop CC 2014 runs
I will add an update here if things change.
    Thanks for the help everyone!

  • While typing a doc in Word, the spinning wheel appeared and froze the Word document.  I had another Word doc open at the time.  I tried to force quit, but it didn't work.  I would like to save it before losing my work, but the spinning wheel blocks me.

While creating a Word doc, the spinning wheel appeared and won't go away.  Another Word doc was open at same time.  How do I get this fixed while saving my work?

    rollrock wrote:

    Basically, you don't.
The 'spinning wheel' is simply an indicator that an operation is taking longer than it should. It doesn't say anything about why, or even if it's an error or not. If it's in Word, it could be that the app is hung, or it could be that it is waiting for some kind of user input, or input from another app. (My bet would be on the former.) You could go into Activity Monitor, identify the process that's making it wait, kill it, cross your fingers and hope that it would generate an error that would cause Word to return control to the user (you). If you had the expertise, that is, and the moon were in right quadrant.
Realistically, your only option is to force-quit Word. Once that is done, if AutoRecovery was on, then, with luck, you could recover much of your work. Here
    <http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahnd.html>
you'll find a quick overview of AutoRecovery and how it works.
If it wasn't on (it should be on by default), then you're out of luck. Chalk it up to experience, turn it on, and back to the grindstone.
