Archive logs and recovering database with no RMAN

Hello,
I inherited a database with no RMAN backup activated but archive redo logs are activated and generating at every moment.
As there is no rman backup I always thought that those archive redo logs were useless and because of reduced disk space, regularly I delete all of them.
Then I read that archive redo logs can be usefull even if there is no RMAN. Archive redo logs can be used in a recovery situation like this:
set all tablespaces in backup mode
alter tablespace tsp1..tsp100 begin backup;
copy all datafiles
alter tablespace tsp1..tsp100 end backup;
alter database create standby controlfile as 'c:\temp\sbytemp.ctl';
copy of archivelogs from start begin backup time till nowAs I delete my archive logs, I don't have all ones from the first time. My question is:
How many archive redo log files would I need to have? Would I need to have all archive logs that were generated from the first time? Or would be enough to have the last three or four ones?
Thanks

How many archive redo log files would I need to have?
Would I need to have all archive logs that were generated from the first time?
would be enough to have the last three or four ones? You need all archive redo log from the moment you have started taking full backup.
If you take full backup every night at 1:00 AM, you will need all archive redo logs that have transactions finished at and after 1:00 AM.

yes/no Please explain it to me
    Thanks a Lot

    Hi,
Yes all archivelog after the missing sequence of archivelog will be useless for recovery.
in ur case 6,7,8,9,10 are useless for you.
So only incomplete recovery is the solution.

  • Recover database with arc-file

    Hi,
my database was in the archive-log and then we had a dataimport and the database crashed, because there was not enough space.
So i brought the database now to the mount status and i want to recover my database.
    I take this:
    recover database using BACKUP CONTROLFILE
and then it proposed me an archive-file but i must take an other one.
How can i choose the file?
    Thanks in advance.
    Nicole

And why on Earth are you throwing "using backup controlfile" in there?
ARE you using a backed up copy of your controlfile? No. You haven't mentioned restoring an old copy of the controlfile at all. So if you haven't restored one from backup, why in Heaven's name are you telling Oracle that the control file is out of date? Because that's what that recovery command does.
Once you say, "The control file you are using is not to be trusted regarding which logs have been generated because it's an old one I brought back from a backup made some time in the past", then it's no wonder that Oracle has a brain fit and starts proposing that archives be applied which don't actually exist yet. "Using backup controlfile" means "I will tell you when to stop applying redo, because this ancient controlfile can't do that for me reliably".
It does actually get worse: the fact that your database crashes doesn't inevitably mean you have to recover a thing. Instance crashes are recovered from completely automatically just by restarting the database.
So you probably didn't need to recover your database at all. You've used the wrong command to recover it even if it did. And by claiming your control file is out of date once, it is quite possible that you really do now need to perform a recovery that was originally completely unnecessary.
    Not bad for a day's work! :-)
The golden rule of recoveries is: when you're in a hole, stop digging until you've worked out with near-complete certainty why you're in the hole in the first place. Diagnosis is king. Only then do you start planning recoveries.
The second golden rule of any recovery process, once you've started is: only restore from backup those files which are actually damaged. If your control file isn't lost or damaged, it doesn't need restoring. Same goes for any datafile, too.
And the third golden rule is: only recover that which you've restored. If you've restored file 4, you don't issue a "recover database" command. And if you haven't restored file 6, don't say 'recover datafile 6'. And if you haven't restored a binary copy of the controlfile made at some time in the past, don't say "using backup controlfile".
The final, not so much rule as inevitable consequence, is that botched, mistaken, wrong or partial recoveries screw your database up much worse than it was before you did anything. I hope you have a good backup of this database, because you're going to need it.

  • Log and Transfer problem with Canon DSLR

I have not been able to make Log and Transfer work with my canon 5D mrk II files. I can import the files or even drag and drop them into FCE but never have been able to get them to come in using log and transfer function. I have tried every kind of file conversion using quicktime Pro and MPEG StreamClip. Does anyone have a way of getting their files into FCE using this function?
All I ever get is this error:
"DCIM" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
My file structure from the chip is: /DCIM/100EOS5D/MVI_**.mov (and also) MVI_**.thm

have you loaded the canon plug in for final cut? this may be the simplest way for you to get those files into FCP.

  • Alert Log File Monitoring of 8i and 9i Databases with EM Grid Control 10g

Is it possible to monitor alert log errors in Oracle 8i/9i Databases with EM Grid Control 10g and EM 10g agents? If yes, is it possible to get some kind of notification?
I know that in 10g Database, it is possible to use server generated alerts, but what about 8i/9i?
    Regards,

    Hello
i am interested in a very special feature: is it possible to get notified if alerts occur in alert logs in an 8i/9i database when using Grid control and the 10g agent on the 8i/9i systems?
Moreover, the 10g agent should be able to get Performance Data using the v$ views or direct sga access without using statspack, right?
Do you know where I can find documentation about the supported features when using Grid Control with 8i/9i databases?

  • Configuring OID and logging into a database with a OID username\password

I've installed the Oracle database software (v9.2.0.2.1) and created a database called OIDDB. I then installed the "Management and Integration" portion of the Oracle database software which includes "Oracle Management Server" and "Oracle Internet Directory". All of this installation is on the same database box.
On another server, my other database (called: BAHDB) resides that I OID enabled. I've already used the "Database Configuration Assistant" to register it with the directory service.
What else needs to be done at this point to log into the database without a Oracle username and password? What high level main steps am I missing? Do I need to do anything with Oracle wallets?

There's now a difference when you use domains in your network configuration:
tnsping server.at.your.domain should get resolved through tnsnames.
tnsping server shoudl get resolved through the LDAP server.
The illegal userid/password error makes me suspect you try to logon with the fully qualified server name; LDAP should respond with something like "no nickname found".
Also - the guest user is only used as a "stub" - you should be able to login with a name, defined in OID - not defined in the database!
    Things to check:
    - rdbms_server_dn - DBCA should take care of it during registration of the database in OID, but it does not always do that. Setting it requires a restart. Remeember, it is case sensitive! Format is cn=SID,cn=OracleContext,dc=<your realm here>
    - Wallet. Was it created, what is in it?
    - User mapping (Use the Enterprise Security Manager - part of the client install); open Realms, open OracleDefaultDomain within Enterprise Domains, third tab ("Database Schema Mapping"), select "Add".
Navigate to cn=Users,dc=<your realm>. Make sure Subtree level is selected, and use your globally identified user (you used guest) for schema; click OK.
    Click Apply
You should now be able to logon as any user, defined in the OID under cn=Users,dc=<your realm> - orcladmin should do.
when logged on, show user will respond with "guest"; use select sys_context('userenv','external_name') from dual; to find out the real user.
The way you now set it up probably will fail to login with 'user lacks create session privilege' - for test purposes, grant create session to guest - in a 'normal' eenviroment, you would use enterprise roles, and assign these to the OID defined users, not directly to the "stub user" (guest in your example)

  • Manually apply archived log to standby database.

    Hi all,
I am working on oracle 10g EE(10.2.0.4).I am having a very difficult database switchover case in my hand.
1.> There are two database .one primary(prim) and another standby(standby).
2.> Initially both of them was configured as oracle data guard, where prim was primary and standby was standby using rman .(RMAN>duplicate target database for
    standby dorecover).
3.>But the rate of generation of archivelog is very high( 20 archivelog per hour with 200mb each).
4.> So automatic shipping of archivelog has been disabled from primary.(log_archive_dest_state_2=defer and nullifying the value of log_archive_dest_2).
5> Now after a period of time archived logs are shipped to dr site manually and applied manually.(alter database recover automatic standby database;)
6.> Now there is a hardware problem occured at primary..it will take 72 hours to come up.
How can i use standby database as primary for that 72 hour.As archive log apply is manually done and parameters are being changed, can i switch over these two?
Is it possible to switchover and switch back these two database with such a configuration?

How can i use standby database as primary for that 72 hour.As archive log apply is manually done and parameters are being changed, can i switch over these two?
Is it possible to switchover and switch back these two database with such a configuration?
As of now you can perform failover your standby to primary database. you should have flashaback enabled, so you have to create a restore point.
Then it can be opened in read & write mode, So once you finished again you can go back to that point.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/manage_ps.htm#i1017111
The above case applicable if you ready to loose, But it doesnt make sense. But in your case this doesnt work. Because once you start use of Standby as primary, there would be live/production data, which you need very much.
So there is lot of work to do.
You have to rebuild standby database and then switchover back to same location. So its a little trip work.
Have you enabled Dataguard Broker ?

  • Multiplexing Online redo logs, archive logs, and control files.

Currently I am only multiplexing my control files and online redo logs, My archive logs are only going to the FRA and then being backed up to tape.
We have to replace disks that hold the FRA data. HP says there is a chance we will have to rebuild the FRA.
As my archive logs are going to the FRA now, can I multiplex them to another disk group? And if all of the control files, online redo logs and archive logs are multiplexed to another disk group, when ASM dismounts the FRA disk group due to insufficient number of disks, will the database remain open and on line.
If so then I will just need to rebuild the ASM volumes, and the FRA disk group and bring it to the mount state, correct?
    Thanks!

You can save your online redo logs and archive logs anywhere you want by making use of of init params create_online_log_dest and log_archive_dest_n. You will have to create new redo log groups in the new location and drop the ones in the FRA. The archive logs will simply land wherever you designate with log_archive_dest_n parameters. Moving the control files off FRA is a little trickier because you will need to restore your controlfile to a non-FRA destination and then shutdown your instance, edit the control file param to reflect changes and restart.
I think you will be happier if you move everything off the FRA diskgroup before dismounting it, and not expecting the db to automagically recover from the loss of files on the FRA.

  • Can archive log backup influence database performance?

    Hi,
can archive log backup generally influence the database performance? I mean: users can view their query to go slowly during backup of archived redolog?

Are you asking about backing up the archived redo logs via rman or directly to tape or the actual archive process where Oracle backs the online redo to disk?
    -- comments on archive process
Normally the redo log archiving process should have no noticable effect on database performance. About the only way for the process to have a noticable performance impact while it is running is if you store all your online redo logs on the same physical disk. You would also want the backup to be on a different physical disk.
Check your alert log to make sure you do not have error messages related to being unable to switch redo logs and checkpoint incomplete messages. These would be an indication that your online redo logs are defined too small and you are trying to cycle around before Oracle has finished archiving the older logs.
-- comments on archived redo log backup
Archived reodo logs should not be on the same disk as the database so using rman or an OS task to back these files up should not impact Oracle unless you server is itself near capacity and any additional task effects the server.

Could someone please help me with this problem? Thanks.

I installed the database with the setup program and come to think of it, I don't think you can specify whether to create a system or demo database. So I probably didn't install a demo, which is what I wanted. I also ran the SQRs and everything showed the database was correct, so I thought I did it right.
If I could install a demo with the setup program, I would do that because I think I could run through it pretty quickly having done it once. I've read in this forum and other places that it's much better to install the db manually, so maybe I'll just do that.
In any case, thanks for all you help Nicolas.

  • Can I have a primary database and standby database with a different windows version?

    Hi
    I need your help.
We need to increase the memory in the server where is the standby database , but first, we need to upgrade the windows version.
The actual version is windows 2003 standard edition 64 bits
The new version will be windows 2003 enterprise  edition 64 bits
This difference in windows version  between primary and standby servers can cause a problem in the synchronization between primary and standby databases ??
What do you recommend? Have both servers in the same windows version?
The databases are in SQL SERVER 2005.
    Thanks.

This difference in windows version  between primary and standby servers can cause a problem in the synchronization between primary
    and standby databases ??<o:p></o:p>
There is no issue with database synchronization as long as SQL Server is of same version.<o:p></o:p>
What do you recommend? Have both servers in the same windows version?<o:p></o:p>
OS(Windows version) has no restriction for using SQL server 2005 database mirroring/log shipping. You can go with upgrade without any worries on SQL

You do not point to the standby database from your primary, in order to get the archivelogs transfered. You need to set at least the parameter LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 like this:
SQL>alter system set LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2='SERVICE=stdby VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=stdby';stdby has to be resolved by the tnsnames.ora on the primary server. Have a look here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/create_ps.htm#i67520
That explains all you need to do to create a physical standby briefly.

  • To clear db2 archive log after db2 database backup

After db2 backup archive log remains as it is.is there setting to remove archive logs after database backup.DAS is not installed.
    DB2 9.1 FP 6
    os HP unix

    Hello Anand,
If the archvied logs are not required, ie they are not required for restore
    you can remove them.
You can check this is by running
db2 list history all for db <sid>
The above command will give you a detailed overview of the backup
history and what logs were archived and what logs were included or needed for restore of backups.
If they are no longer needed for a restore, then it is safe to remove them.
    Kind regards,
    Paul
