Are any Thunderbolt portable storage devices available yet?

I have a fairly new MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt port, which is running Lion. I am wondering if there are any portable Thunderbolt disk drives available yet that I can use on that port? I would love to have an external disk drive to store backups of my photos and other documents while I am on the road to replace my painfully slow USB 2 disk drive. If anyone knows of any offerings in this area, please reply to this message. A google search has not been helpful.

I'd say a quick look at the link you cited would prove that the answer is no - there are no portable Thunderbolt drives available at the moment!
Ahhh, my bad. The "portable" somehow didn't register. Sorry.

  • FAT 32 & PORTABLE STORAGE DEVICES.

    HI
i'm looking to buy a portable storage device (psd) for my
digital camera - one where i can slot in the memory card &
save my photos on it while im away.
Amazingly, there are problems with these devices not being able
to be formatted on macs "because they use FAT 32.."
Could any one give me some advice about this subject.
What i want to do is a regular anti fradmentation routine of formatting
the psd every so often - All these types of product use FAT 32.
    What do i do...?
    d

First, to comment on the Disk Utility formatting as "DOS", when I take the drive I formatted on the Mac as DOS and hook it up to Windows XP, XP identifies it as FAT32. As I said before, I use a 40GB drive and format the entire volume as "DOS" and it works fine as a OTG device. And when I hook it up to an XP machine, it sees the whole volume as well. However if you try and format it with XP, because it is above 32BG, you are not offered a choice of "FAT" or "FAT32" as a format to use, only NTFS. Microsoft designed their operating system to only format drives as FAT32 if the drive is under 32GB, however it, XP, will happily use a >32GB FAT32 volume if already formatted that way.
I have looked at many of those other products you point to back when I was looking for something for this purpose. First and foremore, I use an Olympus camera that uses XD-Picture cards. Most of those devices that have built in card readers either do not support XD-Picture cards at all, or I couldn't get confirmation that the ones that can could read the newer 1Gig XD cards (many card readers won't).
But in addition, I found many of those solutions to be very expensive, most costing several hundreds of dollars. They do have the advantage of having some sort of display, so they should be able to give you some feedback if the transfer was successful before you delete your photos from your card. Mine is simply a drive that will take any information off any USB device plugged into it, but doesn't really give you any way to check your photos transferred correctly. There is a light that will blink red or something if there is some sort of transfer error, but that is about it. So you have to kind of go on faith your transfer worked, if you don't have a computer you can plug the drive into and check (which you probably don't or you wouldn't really need this sort of device). But I have found mine to work fine and haven't experienced any problems yet.
The Macally is a much cheaper solution since the enclosure is about $50 or so. Then you throw your own drive in. If you have one laying around already (say from a past laptp drive upgrade) your are ready to go. I bought a refurbed drive for about the same price so my total cost was roughly $100 for 40GB of portable OTG storage. You can probably find cheap smaller laptop drives to make your out of pocket price a lot less.
One nice thing I like about this one is that is has a USB connector for the OTG feature instead of a card slot. So I can plug ANY USB mass storage device into it and the drive will read all the data in from that device. So you can plug a digital camera in directly, a card reader, a USB Thumb drive, another hard drive, etc.
There are other OTG drives and drive enclosures out there. Here is a cheap one...

But I have no experience with it so can not tell you anything about it.

  • Vosonic VP2160 wont run on Firmware Driver Version 1.13, having problems in getting Firmware downgrade Version 1.07, has anybody out there had a similar problem with this Portable Storage Device?

I am having problems in Finding/Downloading Firmware for a Portable Storage Device (Vosonic VP2160). It has been suggested that I download Firmware Version 1.18, but that wont work.
I have noted some where else that there is a Downgrade Firmware Version 1.07 but I am having great difficulty in sourcing it from Vosonic.
    Any suggestions out there?
    Thanks in anticipation,

  • IMac cannot detect ANY usb mass storage device.

iMac Core 2 Duo (White) cannot detect ANY usb mass storage device including iPod. Only Mice and Keyboards work via usb. Any solutions? OS X shows absolutely nothing when any usb device is connected.

Try resetting the PRAM. Hold down Option-Cmd--P-R together at the startup chime. Wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Try an SMC Reset. Shutdown, unplug from power, wait ten minutes, still unplugged, hold power button in for five seconds. Reconnect to power.
Run the Hardware Test in extended.

Tried a different USB port, tried a different device besides the iPod?

  • Portable Storage Device

Does anyone know if there is a device similar to an prtable external hard drive that will store file/pics etc directly from a flash drive or memory card?  Would also have to use AC power not usb driven.  I am looking for something like this for vacation so as not to have to take laptop.  Thanks!

I'm confused as to exactly what you're asking for.
Are you looking to solely take photos with you, or are you looking for something that you can offload photos from your camera while you are on vacation?
First option > USB thumb drive. High storage, cheap, fairly durable
Second answer > You could look at a netbook if you're looking for something to offload photos from your camera, but doesn't take up much space.
If neither of those are close, please explain a bit more.

  • USB Port keeps crashing my portable storage devices

Ok no matter if it's an external hard drive or a usb flash drive, while transferring data my usb port will just die. The Device Removal window will pop up. If it's my flash drive then the light will keep flashing repeatedly. For the external portable hard drive i just keep hearing the disk start and stop spinning simultaneously. Anyone know how I would go about fixing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Dak

Hi Dave, not long winded at all.
I think you'vve narrowed it down to the OS & Install.
Does the Retrospect Installer have an uninstaller?
    Might try AppDelete...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html
Even if you have to Install Retrospect again to be sure of finding it's files.
    What Format is the External?
Also, WD MyBooks are not a good choice for PPC Macs...

  • Zen Micro as a portable storage devic

Does anyone know if it is possible to put anything but audio files onto a Creative Zen Micro? and if so could someone tell me/link me to somwhere telling me how?
Things im talking about are, files like word Documents etc... I-pod's are able to hold .txt files and you can view them on the screen, so id rather my i-pod owning friend didnt get one up on me...
    Cheers, in advance

You CAN store files one the device, but this is on another part of the harddisk then your music library. You must choose the capacity of this "Removable Disk"-mode when you first use it. It is found in Menu>Extra>Removable Disk. When you select this, music stops playing and you can only use this function unless you press the back button. If you use Removable disk mode you will be able to use it as a usb-device on every PC.

  • [solved] USB storage devices problem

Hello everyone. I have MSI Wind U270 and recently I've moved from Ubuntu 11.04 to Arch. I really like Arch so far but I have one quite big problem and I can't find any solution, so I hope someone here could help me.
After I'd installed Arch, I tried to copy some file from/to USB flash drive. After just few seconds, transfer failed with information about I/O errors and USB flash drive disappeared along with any other USB drives connected at the same time but logitech usb mouse and keyboard continue to work.
My first thought was that it's simply broken USB drive, but same thing was happening also when I tried to move some files from/to any other USB storage device that I have.
Here is sample dmesg output after I connect device:

Next I thought – computer is broken. But it simply couldn't be true because in Ubuntu it's working.
I wanted to test if USB transfer is working in other distros, so I downloaded few and tried:
Ubuntu 11.04 – everything is working
Ubuntu 11.10 – it's not working, exactly same errors as in Arch
    Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 – it's not working
    Mint 11 – it's working
    Mint 12 – it's not working
So one thing in common that I can think of is fact that USB transfer is working in distros using kernel <3.0 and is broken in those using kernel >=3.0.
In dmesg output I can see ehci_hcd errors. When I remove this module before moving files, than everything is working fine apart from very slow transfer but it's obvious.
I really hope that someone will be able to help with my problem.  I don't know if it's some bug or it's just some configuration error.
EDIT: problems were caused by rts5139 module (card reader). Blacklisting that module solved all the problems.

If you have several Apple devices feeding to the same iCloud account, is there an amount of storage made per device available free?  So that you are rewarded for the additional devices?
If this multi purchase if devices is not rewarded with a larger cloud storage being available, would it then be best to have several separate cloud accounts?
Would you lose the ability to mesh data between devices???  Of could you choose to share a smaller part of the data and yet save the rest of the device data to their own cloud?  So in other words, split a devices stored data between 2 different icloud accounts?   One community iCloud account for partial data and individual account for data that does not need to be shared with the other devices, however it needs to be backed up.  The simpler solutions would be If you have several Apple devices feeding to the same iCloud account, an amount of storage made available per device (ie: 5 units of storage free per device)
~ So that you are rewarded for the additional Apple devices by giving 5 more units of storage or backup space per device

Nobody here is an Apple employee, and my Christmas Season has been great, thanks very much. Neither am I jealous, I just abhor the fact that so many people these days expect more and more for free, in addition to what they already get for free. First world problems...
Obviously Apple do consider people with multiple devices, since the whole purpose of the service is to keep data in sync across multiple devices. Clearly, after consideration, Apple decided to give 5GB of storage for free and provide customers with the option to buy more storage if they want/need more, in line with competing services.
Everyone has their own set of unique circumstances but does that mean everyone should be rewarded with extras for free? At what point should it be considered acceptable to actually pay for additional extras you want?
And by the way, somebody expressing a different opinion, and discussing people's expectations is not being rude. Aren't you from the country that supposedly takes 'freedom of speech' rather seriously?

  • Are there any video capture devices available on Linux?

Are there any video capture devices available on Linux?

If you have a tv tuner card with either an s-video or av/ composite connection, then you can use that under linux with a digital video camera (dv camera). I can help if you are interested. Hope this helps!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
What size does it say your next back up will be.

  • Some Apps are not available yet.

Majority of the important apps are not available yet for Q5.  Any updates on when this will be available. Like Viber and WeChat. WeChat is already available and it says that it's compatible with OS 10 but why is it unavailable for the Q5 in specific? Isn't Q5 running on OS10 too!?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
App compatibility is the same as it has always been for BBs. All apps must be specifically ported to the exact device model number AND major OS level in order to function. That means a lot of porting for the developers, and sometimes they choose to not do so. An app that functions on Z10, for example, will not function on the Q5 unless the developer specifically ports the app for the Q5 (and pushes it correctly out via BBWorld).
Likewise, it's up to those app developers to choose what platforms they desire to support. If they do not support a platform that you desire, your channel to push for it is with the developer directly, contact information for which can normally be obtained in the BBWorld catalog.
    Good luck!

  • How can I connect 4 iMacs to 1 thunderbolt storage device

I work in a small photography studio. There are 4 of us with (thunderbolt compatible) imacs and we are tryinng to find a solution that we can access photos and videos for editing that are on one thunderbolt storage device that is connected to each of our imacs. I have only been able to find it possible to connect 2 imac but not more?

I'm pretty sure Thunderbolt-attached drives work the same way as any other kind of external direct-connect drive, which is that they can only have one attached host (ie, one computer that sees it).
Your best bet may be to keep the drive attached to a single Mac and share it out through regular Apple file sharing. By default, an admin login on that computer is able to see all external drives, but you can use the File Sharing system preference tab to control who can read and write to which shared folder.

  • No USB storage devices are recognized anymore - Code 28

    Hi,
since a few weeks except my usb mouse, keyboard, webcam and scanner no
    storage devices are working anymore.
So now flash drives, usb harddisks etc. are working - they just show up in device manager with error code 28.
I deleted one of my devices in the device manager, run the latest intel chipset driver setup but no change.
If I open VMware Workstation and start a virtual Windows 7 machine then I can access my usb storage devices inside the VM.
I also tried exchaning the usb.inf file from the virtual Windows7 to my physical machine, again no change.
And Windows Updates are also not helping - no new Updates are available.
    What else could I try?
    Thanks!
    (Win7 Prof, SP1 64Bit)

    Hi,
You can install the following hotfix to update some files to see how it’s going.
"0x0000009F" Stop error when you resume a computer from hibernation in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2720599
Meanwhile, I suggest you can try the steps below:
Make sure you update to latest BIOS.
        Reinstall USB controllers
First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:
     a. Click "Start" button, type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press "Enter". Click “Continue” if necessary.
     b.  In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
     c.   Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.
If the above steps cannot resolve the problem, try the steps below:
Turned the laptop off, unplugged it.
Pulled out the battery for a few minutes.
        Then power on the laptop.
Make sure the USB device is working, try changing to another USB port.
