Are previews deleted when photos are deleted?

After being confused for a while (as I'm sure many are) about not being able to delete photos from my memory card from Lightroom, I am trying to get into a "correct" workflow which I believe involves formatting the card when I have saved and backed up the images on it. So far I've come to this:
0) Start with an empty memory card and take photos with my camera
1) Import all photos, selecting to create 1:1 previews
2) Look through the imported photos, marking the ones I never want to look at again as Rejected
3) Delete Rejected photos
4) Backup everything that is left
5) Format memory card
This seems to work, but I just want to make sure that the 1:1 previews created during the import of the photos that I Reject are deleted at the same time as the Rejected photos are deleted, so that they are not part of the backup step. Is this the case?
Also, are there any other problems with this workflow?
Thanks,
David

Previews should not be in the same folder hierarchy as the actual images.
With regards to rejecting photos, there are pros and cons to each approach. I just import everything.
I don't know if previews are deleted immediately when the image is deleted, I don't worry about it, I have never had a need to see whether a particular preview exists in the preview cache, so actually I don't know the answer. Why does it matter? Is your disk so close to being full that you are worried about it? that's the only possible reason I can think of to worry about what exists and doesn't exist in the previews cache, and since Lightroom does a very good job of managing these preview files so the human user doesn't have to, I would recommend you not worry about it. There's enough to do managing your actual images so my advice is to not worry about what is and is not in the preview cache.

From the Finder menu select 'Secure Empty Trash'. If this or the suggestion above doesn't resolve the problem take a look at the various suggestions in this link:

OK, here are a set of screenshots with my step by step - maybe you will be able to spot where I've gone awry:
I find a photo in the Library that I will delete from an album:
I go down to my Albums and find the picture in one of them:
I hover over the pic so the little down arrow appears in the bottom right-hand corner. I click on it, then click on the Trash Can in the window that drops down:
    Gone from the Album:
    Gone from the Library:
    In the Trash:
    Whaddup with that?

  • Syncing to iPhone 3GS - Freezes when Photos are synced, after 1st sync

    Using iTunes 9.1.1.12 and iPhone 3GS 3.1.3.
When syncing, the sync freezes when Photos are included to be synced. It just hangs at the end of the sync process, and never completes.
If I don't include the Photos to be synced, it syncs fine.
If I then choose to re-sync the Photos and delete the folder: "iPod Photo Cache"... It re-syncs fine again (and places all photos on iPhone). But if I immediately sync again, without un-checking Photos to be synced, it hangs again at the end.
    Please help.

If you want help you’ll need to give us more information. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • When photos are deleted from photo stream on iCloud

    Hello,
When I delete photos from my Camera Roll on my iPohne 4 they are not deleted from the photo stream (icloud)....is there a reason for that?
Can I make it so photos i delete from my Camera Roll will also be deleted from photo stream or there is not such an option?
One more question, if I transfer photos from my PC to my iPhone and I save them in a new album on my iphone; can I save this album (or just the photos in it)  to the photo stream (so I will have a back up and also that i will be able to see those photos on my ipad)?
    Thank you,
    YoYo

To avoid any unwonted deletion before you have time to import your photos into iPhoto, you should set the automatic import in iPhoto preferences.

  • Attachments Not Being Deleted When Messages Are; Preference Set Correctly

I have multiple copies of attachments remaining on my hard drive after the associated messages have been deleted. These are almost all PDF files (which I know I haven't edited). My preference for this has always been set to "remove unedited downloads after message is deleted." Right now my workaround is to export the mailbox, then reimport it, which then cleans out the unassociated attachments.
Anyone else experienced this? I guess maybe I should try trashing the Mail preferences file to see if it's been corrupted somehow. Which one would that be? Any other suggestions?

I have done some more research and can clarify the problem. I use an IMAP account, but I save messages to folders on my hard drive. So right now in a certain local mailbox folder, the messages in my subfolder are numbered 118XXX.emlx, but I have a bunch of folders in my "attachments" folder numbered 107XXX (this is after a rebuild). For example, right now I have three copies of an attachment in the local mailbox folder and one in the "Mail Downloads" folder.
So this is the proximate cause. When I delete message 118904, then it will remove the attachment folder 118904, but the others remain. So then I have attachments without the messages. Similarly, when I archive the mailbox, only the existing messages pull their attachments to the archive, so the archived mailbox is repaired.
Now for the root cause (I think). In order to sync between home and work, I dump (just) my "Library/Mail/Mailboxes" folder on a USB stick and then take it to the other machine. (Yes, I know this is a bassackwards way of doing exactly what IMAP is supposed to do, but I am uncomfortable with having my messages on our work server, both for privacy reasons and because the server is notoriously flaky.)
So I'm guessing that in the context of just transferring this folder (in contrast to pickup some of the .plist files too), the tables of contents are getting messed up. I would prefer not to move the whole "Library/Mail" folder, because there is still quite a bit of stuff stored in the IMAC-associated folder. I could also just do an archive every night from Mail instead of a copy in the Finder (I did the latter because it was easy to automate).
Any other suggestions? Should I just copy the .plist along with the Mailboxes?

  • Edits are lost when photos are uploaded to web photo printing sites

I have been trying to troubleshot this using a variety of discussions on this and other forums. Nothing seems to work. I have adjusted color, saturation, sharpness, straightness, etc. using iPhoto's editing tools on all of my photos. I am now trying to upload them to sites like Shutterfly, Snapfish and Photobucket to order prints, and no matter what I do I always lose the edits. I have tried exporting them from iPhoto, uploading them from copies moved to the desktop, saved through Preview or Photoshop, or opened through 'Modified' images in the iPhoto folder. Nothing works. The images appear edited when viewed in both Photoshop and Preview, but once they are uploaded to Shutterfly or wherever (and I have tried them all), the edits disappear. I have tried using Firefox and Safari as browsers without any difference. Nothing seems to work. I am desperate for some help with these as I am trying to print 11 X 14 prints of a major portion of my library for an exhibit. Much much appreciated. Also, my iPhoto library is 25GB, so I would like to avoid making a complete second copy of it.
    Thanks for your feedback.
    Kat

Yes your issue is different (and would be better in a fresh thread)
Actually both the edited and unedited version of the photo show up on it.
This sounds like you are using the iPhoto burn (or Share menu ==> burn) command - this burns a "mini iPhoto Library" which includes both
If you just want the latest photos export them to a desktop folder (file ==> export or drag from the iPhoto library window to a desktop folder) and burn that folder to CD

  • What is saved in the iPhoto library file when photos are backed up?

I have been using an external hard drive to back up my Mac files. My Mac stopped working, so now I have a PC netbook. I am trying to get some photo files off my external hard drive, but I can't find the ones I want. Instead, I found the iPhoto library files. What is in those? How can I open them? If I open them on my friend's Mac, will it hurt her files?

Assuming you had a managed Library the iPhoto Library will contain your photos, and many databse files.
You photos are in the Originals folder.
No, they won;t hurt your friend's Mac.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' to choose which Library to open.

  • GPS EXIF data removed when photos are synced to iPhone?

I have manually added GPS EXIF metadata to photos that were taken by an old camera.
After I synced these photos with iTunes for Win 11.3 to my iPhone all location data was gone.
    Is this a known issue?
    Your help is much appreciated!

Nobody knows the answer? Yours was the third question like this I found by searching, yet none have been answered. I get the same results using Picasa. Once the photos are synced back to the iPhone, orientation is lost. Friends looking at the pictures on my iPhone have to keep rotating the device, cocking their head, or both. Some advanced device, that is!

  • Delete a Photo (Really Delete to Trash)

Is it possible to not just remove from a persons profile of faces but actually remove entirely to the trash a pic? I've found a couple of bad pics of my face and when I delete them......they just disappear from faces whether they are tagged or not....and do not appear in the trash....

TO delete photos from iPhoto select a photo(s) while in photo view or event view of the library and drag the photo(s) to the iPhoto trash in the source panel on the left and empty the iPhoto trash - iPhoto menu ==> empty trash
What are you trying to do
You have a library - each photo is in the library and can be viewed in different ways - events, photos, faces and places - you can not delete a photos from one view and leave it in the others - if it is gone from the library it is gone from all views
You can not delete a face thumbnail
Please describe what you are doing and what you want to try to do

  • Are pictures duplicated when they are imported?

    I am new to iMac.
All of my pictures are in a main folder called "The Photo Album", with many subfolders within it.
I placed the folder in the folder "Pictures." I then choose "Import to Library" from the File menu.
So my question is, were the pictures duplicated into the iPhoto Library file? Can I delete "The Photo Album" folder which is in "Pictures," and still have the full iPhoto library? I thought I was just telling iPhoto where to look for my pictures, but it feels like they were all moved / copied into the iPhoto icon under "Pictures," is this correct?
Along with that, if I want to do a manual backup of iPhoto, do I just copy the "iPhoto Library" icon in the Pictures folder to an external hard drive, and is that the whole thing?
    Thanks,
    -Lee

This is not necessary - you can import form anyplace including the original location

Yes - assuming that you have not changed the default settings

Yes - just drag the iPhoto library to an external drive intact as a single entity
