AS, JS, VB ... How to quickly differentiate?

Question

This may be a very simple and silly question, or it may open a whole can of worms, but I figured I ought to toss it out there just in case there is a relatively simple answer that a scripting neophyte may be able to understand.
I am trying to learn some of the basics of JS by reviewing many of the postings in this forum. Some of the objectives are very appealing to me, but when I open the thread of posts I can't always determine whether I am trying to understand JavaScript or another language. Are there some "dead giveaways" that you may be able to share that can help a newbie to quickly determine the type of script?

Also, Applescript doesn't use 'dot notation' like JS and VB. It uses 'Tell' to identify an object
Tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS3"
tell window 1
if myvariable = true then
end if
end tell
end tell
if you see a lot of 'Tell' and 'end tell', you're in applescript
An 'if' statement in VB looks similar to Applescript, whereas Javascript will use brackets
if (myvariable == true) {
} else {
