ASCII equivalent of CF's URLDecode?

Hello, everyone.
Even though I've been working with CF for over a decade, this is going to sound like a total n00b question.  I'm just drawing a blank, right now.  Google isn't much help.
Is there an ASCII equivalent of URLDecode??
Where I work, everything that is inserted into a database goes through a filter that changes certain characters to their ASCII equivalent (ie, the less than "<" is altered to "&lt;").  For displaying the data, I need to revert the &lt; back to < for formatting (there are <br /> in place of line breaks, in the data.)
If not, I suppose I should check cflib to see if there is a UDF.  Hmm..
Respectfully,
^_^

Well, first, that's not ASCII encoding, that's HTML Entity Encoding.
Second, no. There is not a built-in function for decoding HTML entities. The purpose of the function is to use it when displaying output to the screen, not to use it before sotring data for later use.
Obviously that doesn't help since you already have a system that encodes before putting data into the DB. So you need a way to decode it.
If you are using CF8 or CF9, with all of the security hotfixes installed, or you are using CF10, then you'll have ESAPI available to you via Java integration. ESAPI is a security tool from OWASP with built-in encoders and decoders. You can use those. Here is how.
<cfoutput>
          <cfset string = "&lt;hi&gt;" />
          <cfset list = createObject("java", "java.util.ArrayList") />
          <cfset htmlCodec = createObject("java", "org.owasp.esapi.codecs.HTMLEntityCodec") />
          <cfset list.add(htmlCodec) />
          <cfset encoder = createObject("java", "org.owasp.esapi.reference.DefaultEncoder").init(list) />
          #string#
          <br />
          #encoder.decodeForHTML(string)#
</cfoutput>
Hope that helps.

  • Latin characters such as 'à' must be replaced with the ASCII equivalent 'a'

    Hi,
    I struck up in my development at "Latin characters must be replaced with the ASCII equivalent".
    Do let me know the solution if any of you have implemented it before.
    Any kind of help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    OK, more in detail ..
    I'm generating user ID based on First and Last name, if user enters latin characters as a part of his name, i should replace those LATIN characters with ASCII equivalent while generating unique user ID in the portal.
    A requirement for legacy system is that the user id's must contain only ASCII characters, therefore Latin characters such as 'à' must be replaced with the ASCII equivalent i.e. 'a'.
    I hope it is more clear ..
    Thanks

  • How can I use LabVIEW to send the equivalent of a CTRL D (in VT 100 format) out the serial port of my computer?

    I am trying to write a vi that interfaces with a piece of OEM equipment that is set up to talk with a VT 100 terminal. I can't seem to locate the ASCII equivalent string (if there is such a thing) of a CTRL D. Is there a vi that emulates VT 100 commands?

    If I recall, CTRL-D is EOF on most ASCII tables.
    You'd probably have to use an escape sequence
    or if you can use an unsigned 8-bit that might be
    easier.

  • Non-ASCII WIFI Hex WEP Key in iPhone 1.1.2

    I am struggling to connect to my employer's WIFI network. I was able to do this back with older firmware of the iPhone when it would let me specify that the WEP key was Hex. That option doesn't seem to exist anymore.
    My employer's key is "1111111111" but it doesn't have an ASCII equivalent that can be typed using the iPhone keyboard. I've looked around and some people mention that if you put a "$" in front of the hex key that it will then force the iPhone to treat it like hex but that doesn't seem to be true.
    Please help me figure out what I am doing wrong.
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Matt Cooper1,
    WEP Password, and type password means the Mac is seeing it as ASCII password not a hex.
    Is your network using 128-bit or 40-bit encryption?
    If using 40-bit the ASCII password should be 5 characters, and 128-bit 13 characters to avoid potential hashing issues.
    This article discusses that in the "Multiplatform issue" and "Avoiding the issue" sections:

  • Plus sign

    I am having difficulties with the "+" (plus sign) in my URL variables. These are page titles that can sometimes contain various characters. I do have the URLENCODED in there...
    <a href="page.cfm?page=#URLEncodedFormat(rstitle.pagetitle)#">.....
    and using the.... value="#URLDecode(URL.page)#" on the recieving pages querry...
    How can I get around the issue of the user using a plus sign in ther page title?
    I am guessing its pretty easy...but I havent been able to find anything on it yet
    Thanks

    You could always use Replace("+","","all") to remove the plus sign.  Or replace it with the ASCII equivalent.

  • How to handle special characters in NWDI

    Dear All
    I am trying to update the Description from JSP form. Through JCO we are calling the RFC of ABAP. We are passing these description from Java to RFC of ABAP and this RFC update the text in Database.
    We have noticed that if there is some special character in description like as : š or ž, complete description is not getting updated in to the SAP database.
    Can anyone help me how to handle these special characters in Java. There may be N number of special characters. We want to generalize it. We want to replace these characters by s and z respectively.
    For example : We want to update this description.

    Regards
    Bhavishya

    Hi Bhavishya,
    Apparently your SAP database isn't configured to support Unicode. That would be the first solution to your problem, but I can imagine it's a bit drastic to convert your DB.
    A second solution would be to encode the input description to ASCII before storing it in the database. When reading from the database, decode again to Unicode. This way, no information is lost. A suitable encoding would be Base64. e.g.
    String description = "šunday žebra";
    String descriptionBase64 = new sun.misc.BASE64Encoder().encode(
      description.getBytes("UTF-8")); // ""
    // store descriptionBase64 in the DB
    // later, when reading descriptionBase64 from the DB
    String description2 = new String(
      new sun.misc.BASE64Decoder().decodeBuffer(descriptionBase64), "UTF-8");
    Instead of using Sun's implementation, a better alternative is to use the open source implementation
    org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64 from Commons Codec .
    The 3rd approach is indeed to normalize the description by replacing all special characters with their ASCII equivalent. A rather easy solution is as follows:
    String description = "šunday žebra";
    String descriptionNormalized = sun.text.Normalizer.normalize(
      description, sun.text.Normalizer.DECOMP, 0).replaceAll(
      "[^p{ASCII}]", "");
    sun.text.Normalizer decomposes the string, e.g. "éàî" becomes "e´a`i^", after which non-ASCII characters are being removed using a regular expression.Again, note that it's usually a bad idea to use sun.* packages, see note about sun.* packages. The above code only works with J2SE 1.4 and J2SE 5.0, but it breaks in J2SE 6.0 (where
    java.text.Normalizer became part of the public API ;-). A good open source implementation can be found here: ICU4J (com.ibm.icu.text.Normalizer).
    Kind regards,
    /Sigiswald

  • Prevent Non-English Characters on JSP forms

    I was hoping to get any programming tips/ideas to prevent users from entering non-english text on web-forms.
    Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I have a jsp page something like:
    <tr>
    <td colspan=2> </td>
    <td colspan=2>
    <textarea name="title" cols="<%=cols%>" rows="3" wrap><%= form.getTitle()%></textarea>
    </td>
    </tr>
    When the user submits the page, I do the form validation in the java formhandler. I was hoping that I could somehow compare the ascii codes of the character to ensure user is entering only english characters.
    The following is the code, I have written in java the form-handler
    for (int i =0 ; i < title.length() ; i++) {
         char c = title.charAt(i);
         System.out.println("c = " + c + ", ascii = " +(int)'c');
         if (int(c) > 127) {
              setErrorMessage(ID.QUESTION.TITLE, "Non-English characters are not allowed. Please enter the required information only in Enlgish.");
    But for some reason which I am not able to debug, is that no matter what character I enter english or non-english its ascii equivalent i.e. the int(c) value getting printed out is always 99. Moreover even if I enter a non-english character, in the system.out it is printing its english equivalent...if that makes any sense...
    I hope I was able to explain my problem...Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • PL/SQL XML Parser (problem getting text of a node)

    I am trying to get the contents of an ELEMENT (node with a CDATA section) using xmldom.getNodeValue(). However, it seems that there is a MAXIMUM number of characters that I can get back.
    I think I've found a work-around using xmldom.writeToBuffer() which seems to write all of the CDATA contents to a VARCHAR2 variable. Now my problem is that it is using strings like '&#60' and '&#38'. I recognize these strings as being "internal representations of '<' and '&' respectively. I'd not have to replace every occurence of these types of strings with the ASCII equivalent -especially since I don't know all of the possible '&#nn' strings that may crop up.
    Help!

    The use of "//" or "\\" appears to be a bug in JServer. It has
    been filed. You should not specify the path as a shared
    directory as a workaround.

  • Select a range of alphanumeric values

    hi,
    i have a column with values like this:

    You can change that as you require if it's not quite what you mean.

  • Internationization

    Hi,
    I am facing issue while displaying Japanese characters in the Text Box on an HTML/JSP page. When I take input from the user in the Text box , it shows proper japanese characters in the text box and also on the labels. But when the same is saved in the oracle database and retrieved next time and displayed in the textbox it shows the ASCII equivalent of the character . But the same appears fine when shown as the label.
    Character I see in text box is amp#12486;amp#12461; amp#12473; amp#12488; whereas on labels I see actual japenese characters equivalent of these acsii values.
    (Please read amp as &)
    I have tried
    <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=shift_jis">
    <%@ page contentType="text/html;charset=SHIFT_JIS" %>
    But with no success . Any clues where the problem is.

    Do you have some mechanism that escapes your strings prior to display on the HTML page?
    How are you actually inserting the strings containing Japanese characters in the text box? Do you use a taglib that inserts the HTML for the INPUT field or do you simply do something like: <input type="text" value="<%=myValue%>"> where "myValue" is a string? A code snippet might help.
    If you were to print the content of the string that ultimately gets inserted in the value of the input field using System.out.println(), what would the result be? A bunch of ????? or the sequence of characters "amp#12486;amp#12461; amp#12473; amp#12488;"

    Ok JPS, I see the problem now. I started an application to enroll a company named Münchkins. That string was accepted on the "Enter your company information" page, but was displayed as Mnchkins on the "Review your enrollment information and submit" page. Moreover when I went back to the first page, Mnchkins had replaced Münchkins in the Company Name field.
    The HTML source shows the symbol (65533) is in the file, so this isn't a problem with your browser's Text Encoding setting.
    There has to be an issue in the process of saving the data.
    I don't think we can say where the char is breaking. It might be a limitation of the text field used in that form. I don't know anything about how entry of extended chars should be handled in a web form. I think some pages might use JavaScript, but just guessing. I'll bet one of the other developers here knows chapter and verse. But without doing more research I don't know whether or not there's anything more you can do at your end (Oh.. I guess I can say one thing: Typing M&#252;nchkins doesn't work!).
    I might be tempted to try and submit the form with the and see what happens. If the software accepts it, maybe it will get someone's attention. Else maybe use an ASCII equivalent and contact the Dev Program people to correct it. Here's a link to the "Contact Us" page: [http://developer.apple.com/contact>. Based on my experience, someone will get back to you right away for this kind of problem. There's a link to a phone no. on that page too.

  • How to convert a integer into bytes!!!

    I am trying to pack the length of the data transamitted over a stream into 2 bytes (Each byte is a unsigned char in terms of 'C' language). When i am using the bytes in java any value greater than 127 is a negative number (I understand the very definition of 'byte' in java), my question is how to pack the length of the data the 'C' way still following Java rules??
    Example :: Length of the data is 168 say!
    the 2 bytes would be 0x00, 0x80 (the respective ascii values would be NULL, P) but with Java i get some thing different as we know??
    byte 1 = 00 and byte 2 = -88 ( i am not sure what would be the ascii equivalent of this??)

  • How to use Unicode characters with TestStand?

    I'm trying to implement the use of Greek characters such as mu and omega for units. I enabled multi-byte support in the station options and attempted to paste some characters in. I was able to paste the mu character (μ) and import it from Excel with PropertyLoader. However, I have not had any luck with omega (Ω). I found the HTML codes for these characters on a web page (http://www.hclrss.demon.co.uk/unicode/) so I could use those codes for HTML reports, but that won't work for database logging, nor does it display the characters correctly for the operator interface. The operator interface is not a major problem, but the database must have the correct characters for customer reports. Anyone know how to do this? D
    oes database logging support Unicode for stored procedure calls to Oracle?

    Hello Mark -
    At this time TestStand has no unicode support. The multi-byte support that we do offer is based on the Windows architecture that handles Asian language fonts. It really isn't meant to provide a bridge for unicode values in TestStand. Certainly, your Operator Interface environment will have its own support level for unicode, i.e. at this time neither LabWindows/CVI version 6.0 nor LabVIEW 6.1 officially support unicode characters. This is why you will see that the units defined in the TestStand enumerators are all text-based values.
    I have run a quick test here, probably similar to what you were doing on your end, and I am uncertain if you will get the database behavior you want from TestStand. The database logging steps and API all use basic char sty
    le strings to communicate to the driver. Even though you are reading in a good value from Excel, TestStand is interpreting the character as the nearest ASCII equivalent, i.e. "Ω" will be stored and sent to the database as "O". If you have a stored proceedure in Oracle that is calling on some TestStand variable or property string as an input, then it is doubtful you will get correct transmission of the values to the database. If your stored proceedure could call into a spreadsheet directly, you would probably have better luck.
