Automate file saving in Mail

Has anyone managed to get a work around for automatically saving files (based on a rule) in a predestined folder? Any thoughts would be very welcome!

This should be easily doable with an AppleScript. In your rule, set up whatever conditions are necessary to select the message in the normal way. Choose "Perform AppleScript" as the action. For initial testing, choose "Sample Rule Action Script.scpt" as the script, found at path /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts/Rule Actions/.
This script won't do anything useful except demonstrate the form necessary to pass message info to a script & tell you a bit about how to modify it for your own purposes. (You will want to store your own scripts in ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Mail/. You may wish to copy the sample script from the above location to this one in the Finder, rename it with something like "My Attachment Saver," & alter the rule to point to it once you are satisfied your rule conditions pick the appropriate messages. This will guard against accidental changes of the Apple-provided original & make it easier to test your version as it is developed.)
Follow the directions in the script to view it in Script Editor. Read the script, which contains more info that will help get you started. You will also find it instructive to examine other Apple examples found in the Scripts folders.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you all you need to know to write your own script, nor do I have the time at the moment to write an example. However, you will find that by opening AppleScript's Help topics, Apple has provided a lot of basic info about this & links to AppleScript web pages where you can find more. If you have a need or interest in creating a lot of automated work flows, you will find this well worth the time invested.
If you don't, or need immediate help writing the script, I suggest that once you understand the basics, you post a request for help in Apple - Support - Discussions - AppleScript, explaining in detail what you want the script to do. Some of the participants in that forum often post examples or even complete solutions for these requests, or at least will help guide you through parts you are having problems getting to work as expected.
If you go this route, it would be a good idea to post a link to your topic in that forum here, in this thread, so interested readers (myself included) can follow or contribute to it.

  • Default page size settings in TEXT FILES SAVED FROM MAIL

    I regularly save emails as rtf files (either with or without attachments) and sometimes return to print them with TextEdit.
    I'm in Ireland, where our standard paper size is as most European countries, i.e. A4.
    My 'Default Paper Size in Page Setup' is set in the Print & Fax pane in *System Preferences* as A4.
    If I select 'Page Setup...' in Mail to print direct from the Application, it defaults as you'd expect to A4.
    If I make a fresh text file with TextEdit, it also defaults to A4.
    But if I 'Save As...' from Mail and then open the resulting file in TextEdit (or Word, for example) I find it has been saved with a US Letter Page Setup. Can I change this setting? If so, where?

    I think I see where the confusion is.
    I'm not talking about file attachments (the 'Save Attachments...' function in the File menu). What I'm talking about is the saving of the email as an rtf file (the 'Save As...' function). When you select 'Save As...' there's a further pull-down menu for format that allows you to save it as one of 3 options: Rich Text Format, Plain Text OR Raw Message Source. I want to save it as Rich Text which preserves fonts, bold type etc.
    Mail clearly can create such files (I have several GB of saved emails that says so!) - what I want to figure out is if there's a way to control the way it sets the page size in those files as it does so.

  • How to Stop automatic file saving on IPAD Adobe Reader 11.2

    How can stop my PDF document being saved with the fillable form data when being using Adobe Reader 11.2 on an IPAD - the file is automatically saved when the user returns to the document folder.  The original pdf file was created from a Word document and then text,signature and date fields added using Adobe Acrobat XI and saved using Standard Save function. I am trying to achieve my users completing the template form using the IPAD and then emailing it. However each time the form is filled and emailed (which all works fine) and the user returns to the "documents" folder, Acrobat Reader 11.2 automatically saves the file with the form data

    I think the iPad forces a different way of thinking. In general, you don't have to save files on the iPad, and that's important. The iPad has complete liberty to quit an app when you want to run a different app, or just because it feels like it. When you restart a good app, things are as they were when it was quit.
    Resetting is a possibility, but remember that because of this automatic quit/automatic restart it might happen when you don't want it. A reset BUTTON seems entirely possible.

  • Files saving

    Hi, is there a way to deactivate the automatic file saving location to either documents, downloads or attachments? I want all my files to saved on the desktop, all the time?
    thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Each web browser has its own preference page as to where to save documents. Please be more specific as to which browser you are having trouble with?
    Attachments also are controled on e-mail programs preferences as well. So please be more specific as to which e-mail program you are using.
    As a workaround, you can make it easier to navigate downloads, attachments and documents by opening a File menu -> Save As in most programs, or clicking the Save As button next to the attachment in many programs. Put your favorite folder in the Finder menu's left sidebar, and it will also appear in the Save As dialog. Once clicked you will instantly be able to save files there.

  • Is it possible when saving the psd file to have an automatic jpg file saved at the same time?

    My work involves preparing images for printing lightboxes and window installations.  My clients require to pre-approve the photos before printing.
    I usually save my files as psd but since the files are very large in this format I usually save another copy as a jpg file that has a much smaller file size.  This makes it possible for me to add these to a presentation and and send them to my client.
    Is it possible when saving the psd file to have an automatic jpg file saved at the same time?  Or do I still have to do this manually?

    If you save the document manually as a PSD file in Phtoshop not from within an Action, Script, Plugin or Droplette.  You may be able to write a Photoshop that would do as save as Jpeg,  And you should be able trigger its execution by setting up a Script Save event using the Script event manager.  When You do a manual save  the script should be triggered.  I wrote may be able to for I have never tried to write that script or set up a Script Manager Save event.  I have only use open events.

  • My power went off and I have lost a word file I was working on. Was this file saved automatically anywhere where I can retrieve?

    My power went off and I have lost a word file I was working on. Was this file saved automatically anywhere where I can retrieve?

    It may have been if you had autosave activated.  I've never had that happen so I don't know where the file is put.  I would expect Word would ask you if you wanted to retrieve a saved version when you next started it in those circumstances.

  • Problem saving Excel files sent in mail

    This problem is since I upgraded to Maverick.
    I receive an Excel file ( file.xls ) in Mail as an attachment and when I try to save there is an existing file with the same name it then ask if I want to replace it and I answer Yes. The problem is is does not replace the file and I dont get any error messages. I must delete the old version of the file first then save the new version. I dont know if it is Mail or Excel that has a problem with Maverick. Doe anybody else have this problem?

    I am experiencing exactly the same problem, but with text files. It seems that the "replace" doesn't work, but with no explaination or warning. Extrememly frustrating. (Mail 7.0, Mavericks 10.9)

  • When I delete an e-mail, it automatically puts another e-mail in my inbox which says "no sender".  What am I doing wrong and how to get all these off my I-Pad?

    When I delete an e-mail, it automatically puts another e-mail in my inbox which reads "No Sender", thus I have numerous e-mails that have not really been deleted.  How can I delete all these e-mails and how to correct the issue of deleting e-mails?

    Here is one way of doing it. Left click on picture, list opens click on save as. In next window box apears save as type PNG(*.png). Then go to my pictures and print picture from there. I am not sure what print target is? That is in the list also. That may be how it is directly printed. Never used that short cut. Try it and see. I know for sure saving it to file works.

  • Can not open all .pdf files in Yahoo Mail.

    Three computers using Windows XP and Internet Explorer can open all .pdf files in Yahoo
    Mail. The fourth and newest Computer with XP Pro, Internet Explorer, and the latest Adobe
    Reader can only open some, but not all, .pdf files in Yahoo Mail. Nothing happens when
    the window is clicked to open file. How can this be fixed?

    Adobe Reader isn't my favorite, but neither are smug and uninformed assertions about Preview. There are PDFs that render only squares and marks under Preview (http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/24209/this-pdf-displays-with-question-m arks-instead-of-letters), which is a common problem in MS Windows Office generated PDFs, so you may actually need Adobe Reader for Mac.
    If you need to use Adobe Reader (as I do), then it may depend on the filesystem type where you save your PDF.  For example, our Macs are network homed.  Saving to desktop produced the error reported above no matter whether I used Safari:Save As, or the PDF save icon.
    However, when I saved to a local drive (such as /tmp), then it worked.  I don't know why file system makes a difference, unless Adobe is doing something with extended attributes that doesn't get written correctly to some filesystems.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I restore saved e-mail from time machine in 10.7.2?

    My saved e-mails just vanished. I have dire need to restore them. They contain vital information. Where are they in Time Machine and exactly how can I restore them? Thanks in advance for any help.
    Jim

    Hi James,
    sorry for my delay.
    You mean that you found the folders in your Library/Mail/etc...  ??
    Strange that you have the messages there and not in your Mail program. It is clear a matter of a database corrupted.  Inside Mail there is a command Rebuild. this should do the job but there is a risk of a demage to the present Mail.  Of course you can explore each single file in the librari folder but you see they are down in a comples structure and you may not find everithing.
    I am not so expert to give you a safe suggetion.
    Before tryoing a rebuilt I would do as follows to be more safe about the possible result.
    Create a new user Account in your Mac and copy your complete Mail folder into the Library of the new account.
    Then try the rebuild option in the new user account and see what happens. You today mail system will not be affected and you can decide what to do.
    To postpone a rebuilt can be an option but if you have a demaged database and you se you can live with the result of a rebuild in the "test" account I would rebuild also your.
    For some reason before doing any action I wouyld repair the permission and also check the HD to be sure you do not have any write-read problem.
    Let me know if it works.

  • How may I automatically stop and start Mail services at a set time please

    Hi folks. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to automatically stop and start Mail services (or any other services) at a set time please in Leopard Server? Is there a script someone has created which might help?
    Cheers, David ( a realy newbie when it comes to administering OS X server)

    launchd works through a series of XML documents that define tasks to run, either at launch, on a time schedule, in response to network events, etc.
    So you'll need to create two .plists - one to start the mail server and one to stop it. They should be saved in /Library/LaunchDaemons. I'd suggest something like:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.postfix.stop.plist:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple
    .com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
      <key>Label</key>
      <string>local.postfix.stop</string>
      <key>ProgramArguments</key>
      <array>
        <string>/usr/sbin/serveradmin</string>
        <string>stop</string>
        <string>mail</string>
      </array>
      <key>StartCalendarInterval</key>
      <dict>
        <key>Hour</key>
        <integer>1</integer>
        <key>Minute</key>
        <integer>00</integer>
      </dict>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    and /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.postfix.start.plist:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple
    .com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
      <key>Label</key>
      <string>local.postfix.start</string>
      <key>ProgramArguments</key>
      <array>
        <string>/usr/sbin/serveradmin</string>
        <string>start</string>
        <string>mail</string>
      </array>
      <key>StartCalendarInterval</key>
      <dict>
        <key>Hour</key>
        <integer>4</integer>
        <key>Minute</key>
        <integer>00</integer>
      </dict>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    You'll need to either use launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.postfix.stop (or start) to load the tasks, or reboot your server.
    I'm curious, though, as to why you want to do this. Mail is typically one of the services that people want to run 24/7 so they don't miss out on any emails (even though SMTP can tolerate this). Why do you want to shut yours down?

    Unless you are prepared to zip and email every folder and

  • Saving e-mails from Safari 2.0.3 to Appleworks 6.0

    We use Safari & Appleworks in our company. We often need to save e-mails we receive. Our ISP is AOL. We follow the following procedure: open AOL e-mail in Safari, select an e-mail, click print, copy the resulting window and paste it in a new Appleworks document. Two problems this procedure is very long and when we paste the text of the e-mail to an Appleworks document we get the message that this e-mail was not scanned for viruses and a virus was found and removed. How doe we eliminate the message? Is there a quicker method of saving e-mails while preserving the addresses in the saved text?

    Hi Hessinc,
    The need for automation would naturally allude to either an Automator workflow or an applescript. Do you necessarily have to use AppleWorks? If so, then you would probably have to go down the Applescript route. Automator doesn't have support for Carbon apps, as far as I know. For tutorials and extensive how-to's on scripting, please refer to MacScripter.
    If, however, you can use other text editing apps, then you have more options to choose from. For instance, have you thought of maybe printing the email to PDF (via the 'Print' dialog)? Or exporting the text selection to a TextEdit .rtf file (via the 'Services' sub-menu under 'Safari')?
