Automation with labview - Frequency Measurements

I'm trying to automate capturing resonance of a material. My current setup is this:
I have a plate with magnets attached to a material. There are coils around the magnets.
I have an accelerometer attached to the plate
I have a sony 5 channel amp that gives voltage to the coils which then excite the magnets which excite the accelerometer.
I read the acceleration output on multimeter.
I have an analog Global Specialties function generator that I sweep with
I find the frequency with the FG, at the peak accelerometer voltage, and I get a resonant frequency.
In addition, I have:
I have a NI-9174 with 4 slots.
I have a NI-9104
I have a NI 9215
My question is. Can I take the analog FG out of the equation and use labview to produce a sinewave which will then be powered to the coils? I want to automate this process where I can set a schedule and it'll sweep and find my peak acceleration.
I'm A CLAD at best ,so a starting point would be nice. First, do I have the capabilty to automate this with the hardware I have? If I do, how would I go about setting up a virtual FG to replace my old dinosaur analog FG?
I'd appreciate any input! Thanks guys.

I have yet to get an AO module...my typical frequency range is 15-120hz while inputing  9mv-20v. The analog FG I have is a Global Specialites 200khz 2001a. Seeing that I'm trying to do this without it, I didn't think that was pertinent.

  • Scxi 1126 frequency measurement along with other scxi modules

I want to measure frequency signal using sxci 1126. I have gone through the example code for sxci 1126. I am using NI-DAQ and Labview 7.1.
The example code is applicable when am acquiring only from 1126. I have to acquire data also from 1102 102B along with 1126.
In the example code along with AI config.vi and Ai Start.vi there are two additional vi's like AI paramete.vi and AI Trigger config.vi I understand that they are used for reading from 1126. My worry is how this is going to affect my acquisition from other scxi modules as all the modules are in multiplexed mode.

    Hi Bipin,
Looking at your code, I see that you are still using Traditional DAQ. Since you have LV 7.1, you can take advantage of the new features of DAQmx.
With DAQmx, you can create a virtual task that includes all of the different types of measurements you want to make. Once you set up the task in MAX, you can place it on the block diagram and automatically generate the code necessary to execute this.
To do this, open up the Measurement and Automation Exlporer (MAX). Select "Data Neighborhood" from the tree on the left. Then click the button labeled "Create New." Create a DAQmx Virtual Channel. Follow the series of menus to set up your first type of acquisition (1126 frequency measurement). When you are
done creating the task, you can add the second type of measurement to that same task. In the task config page, you will see a white box with the name of the channel you just created in it. Above the name you will see an "Add" button. Click on this button and follow the menus to set up your second measurement (1102 module).
Once they are set up, save the task and open LabVIEW. Place the DAQmx Task Name constant on your block diagram found in All Functions >> Data Acquisition >> DAQmx... the task name constant is a purple colored box. Clicking on the box once its on the block diagram will expand a menu that will let you choose your task. Once selected, right click on the task name and choose Generate Code >> Example. This will automatically generate the code necessary to run the tasks. Simply hit the run button and enjoy!
    Thanks,

You should connect the signal (whose frequency needs to be measured) to Ctr-1, and there gonna be an internal connection between the output of the first counter and the gate of the second counter (as described here).
You may want to check this link as well.

    Hi Leo22,
Does this error occur if you use any of the example programs that come shipped with LabVIEW? I would try opening one of the examples that write data to Word and see if those give you an error. Also, have you tried just putting down a New Report.VI and change the report type to Word? If this simple vi (that's all you need to open Word) breaks, I would check to see if there are any instances of Word still open. Check the task manager to see if any word processes are still open. There should not be a problem accessing Word 2003 from LabVIEW 7.0. If neither of these solutions work, please give some more detail about your application and we can research further. Thanks!

  • How to switch central frequency fastly with labview and USRP?

    Hello everybody,
Recently I was making a frequency hopping receiver with labview and USRP N210 and SBX. The transmitter works on the 2.4G band, and it changes from one central frequency to another every 65536us. As I think, if I start receiving at the correct time, and  change the central frequency of the USRP every 65536us, I should be able to receive the data.
But I find that, when usrp switch form one central frequency to a different one, it spends nearly 48ms and when it switch from one frequency to the same one, it only spends 3ms(I test the performance by modifying the niUSRP EX Rx Continuous Async Reconfig on the Fly.vi example). So if I want to follow the hopping sequency, I may can only receive 17ms data because I have to save time for switching central frequency.
My problem is that: why usrp changes central frequency so slow,  how can I make the process faster? If I want to follow the hopping sequency, can anybody give me some good advice? Thanks

There is an attribute "LO Frequency" that you can use to lock down the frequency of the local oscillator.  Then, when you set the "Carrier Frequency" attribute, the difference between the carrier frequency value and the LO frequency value will be realized by frequency shift in the DSP in the FPGA.  Changing this "digital" frequency shift value is much faster, since you don't have to re-tune the local oscillator.
Let's say you're sweeping from 2.44 GHz to 2.46 GHz.  Set the "LO Frequency" to 2.45 GHz then Commit.  Then, in your loop, program the "Carrier Frequency" attribute from 2.44 GHz to 2.46 GHz.  In the loop, it will only program the digital frequency shift, which will happen much faster.
Another tip is to use the property node to program only the attributes you want to change, rather than the niUSRP Configure Signal.vi (which sets many at once).
For more details, see the "Configuration:Advanced:LO Frequency Property" in the NI-USRP Help, and look at this example:

    Hi,
As you have described I've done the whole configuration. I am using MatrikonOPC for BACnet and as I've checked my device and the software are working properly. Now what I am trying to is that I am connecting the BACnet OPC server with LabVIEW so that the MatrikonOPC act as a connection layer between my device and LabVIEW. So that I will be able to change values directly from my LV vi. Now when I connect that Bacnet OPC with LabVIEW using the same procedure for PLC it gets connected because it is showing all the tags from the device. But after doing the whole procedure which is the same according to the tutorial 'connecting LV to any PLC using OPC' when I deploy the variables I am getting some error. I am attaching the screenshot of the error. Please let me know if I am doing any thing wrong.
PS: I am using a virtual machine and I've tried the whole thing with the NI OPC servers as well according to the tutorial but still when i deploy variables I am getting this error.

  • NI9411 frequency measurement with analogue output

I have an NI-9411 connected into a 9178 cDAQ module. I want to constantly measure the frequency of a digital signal then output this signal as an anlogue output using another of my NI modules. I am pretty new to the NI environment, does anyone know of a simple method using the DAQassistant?
    Thanks for your help.
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
Do you want to output a voltage that varies with frequency or just an analog signal with the same frequency as the digital?
The easiest way for you to do this is to use two DAQ Assistant VIs and wire the output from your digital module into the output of your analog module.
If you wanted to output a varying voltage with frequency you would perform some simple scaling on your measured frequency and wire it straight to the output.
If you wanted a varying frequency analog signal, you could use the Simulate Signal express VI and wire the measured frequency into the frequency input.
The reason you only see four channels for frequency measurement is that this particular function utilises the hardware counters on your device to count the time period between pulses to work out the frequency, your cDAQ 9178 has four of these hardware counters.
For direct voltage level measuring you will see six differential channels available.
Hope this is helpful to you.

  • Where can I found hardware to get analog signal from VCR and work with labview and then sample this signal in very high frequency?

I am trying to build a Digital Video Recorder using Labview. The problem is that I found that Labview sample the signal in the order of milisecond. I wanted it to be in the order of microseconds. Also I am looking for a cheap Hardware solution if it is possible

Your question does not make a lot of sense to me, so I will just point out a few things.
    1. The PCI-1411 works well with VCR signals. It has a BNC connector as well as a S-Video connector. The price is under $1000, so it is fairly reasonable. The amount of time you save getting it to work with LabVIEW is worth any extra cost.
    2. The PCI-1411 is sampling three colors at 30 frames per second, with an image resolution of 640x480. This is the best resolution you are likely to get from a VCR signal. The sampling rate for each byte in the image is about 28 MB/sec. This is in the microsecond range that you are looking for, I think. If you are only interested in the raw signal instead of the image, you could look at the high speed digitizing boards NI sell
s that acquire at higher rates.
If this information isn't really what you were looking for, perhaps you could clarify your question.

  • Continuous frequency measurement~

    Dear sir,
        How are you today?
I tried to program the "Measure Frequency.vi" in LabView 5.1 .  I've the simplified version
from "LabView Measurements Manual" in page 10-26. Basically, we want to measure the
frequency change within 20 ms (chirp). So I just naively added the "for loop" enclosing everything,
as the attached VI. But the testing result (please see the attached document) showed that
sometimes the counter/timer (AM9513) lost count. Could you please troubleshoot my VI and
tell me how I should improve?
In addition, I tried to use the oscilloscope to see the gate signal from counter-1 (counter 5)
OUT pin, but it showed 0.14V. The signal from GATE pin of counter (counter 1) showed 5V.
I was expecting what I would see is something like TTL signals with different pulse widths and
delay widths. Can you tell me what I was doing wrong?
Thank you for your previous answers!
    Best regards,
    Margaret

    Hi Margaret,
I think that there is one way to obtain a count every 20ms. What you will need to do is:
    1. Generate a 50 Hz pulse train
    2. Connect your signal to the a counter source
    3. Connect the 50 Hz pulse train to the counter gate
    4. You will obtain a series of counts over a 20ms period and you will be able to determine the frequency of the signal using post processing by dividing the count # by 0.02.
I noticed that you are using LabVIEW 5.1. This version of LabVIEW is no longer supported. I highly recommend upgrading to a newer version of LabVIEW. This will allow you to program with the DAQmx driver and creating your application with this driver would be significantly simpler and take a lot less time.
If you do not want to try this method, then I am attaching the screenshot for measuring the time the while loop takes to execute. I want you to know that the overall time will not have an effect measuring the signal's frequency. There really isn't anything you can do to decrease the execution time for the counter. I hope that you find this information helpful.

    Hal L.

  • Is axis ptz 215 ip camera compatible with labview?

Hi I am working with labview for my final year project and am trying to find a ip camera which will work in labview.
I wish to use the axis 215 ptz but want to make 100% sure that I will be able to capture video input from it before I purchase it.
    so
1, will i be able to capture video into labview with a axis 215ptz?
2, Will I be able to control the pan tilt and zoom controls of a axis 215 ptz labview?
and if so any help as to how would be great also thanks for your time.

I and a NI engineer tried various ways to get it to work in labview he was quite helpful.
After installing the camera and checking on internet explorer that it worked and was a valid IP for the computer we tried the following in labview.
Measurements and automation explorer under device interface and remote systems couldn’t find the Samsungs IP or name
Another way I tried was vision and motion vision express once again the camera couldn’t be found even though through the same method the Ni engineer could find his supported camera a different one to the Samsung.
Yet another way was through vision assistant in which we tried the acquire image from ip camera driver and once again the Samsung was not found.
On conclusion the Ni engineer concluded the Samsung wasn’t supported and thus after research we tracked down that apparently axis and basler cameras are supported. Of these specifically I wish to use the axis 215 ptz I emailed the same question above and an NI engineer replied
    Hi Nicholas,
You can use the Axis 215 pzt camera to control and use with LabVIEW there is no problems at all. Make sure you don't change the firmware that comes with the camera, As this can cause it not to work.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

  • How to use a photogate for frequency measurement using a NI USB-6211

Hello, I am extremely new to LabView and am having trouble using the counter feature (or if this is even what I should be doing). I am trying to use a photogate as a frequency counter when a voltage spike is created by blocking the sensor. This will then be put into RPM and used to evaluate a small motor dyno I am creating. If anyone has any help or previous vi's they dont mind sharing it would be greatly appreciated. The photogate specifications are for an optek opb930l55. Thanks

Configuring a counter input task will be a little different depending on the type of DAQ card that you are using to read the digital pulses.  You just need to wire the voltage from the photogate to one of the counter pins on the card.  Then follow one of the many examples for measuring the frequency of pulses.  If your card allows it, I would suggest choosing the Counter Input >> Frequency measurement from the DAQmx Create Channel VI.  If you have questions about how to do this with your specific DAQ device, please provide more information
