Automator permissions question

So I want to run some command-line commands to change the permissions. I know the command, but I don't know how the best way to implement them in automator. Any advice? when I try to enter them in the command-line action, it generates and error of the first command/.
Here are the commands I need to run:
chflags -R nouchg /Volume
chown -R rts /Volume
chgrp -R artserverusers /Volume
chmod -R ur+w+x,g+r+wx,o-r-w-x /Volume
Thanks,
Scott

You need to use the *do shell script* command, using administrator privileges, along with sudo. Detailed in the AppleScript Language Guide.

  • Repair Disk Permissions question...

I keep getting this after I repair disk permissions :
    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
    Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x ."
Can someone please tell me what this means?...and especially the Warning: SUID...something modified and will not be repaired?...is this something I should be concerned about?...
Wasn't sure where to put this question...if it's in the wrong place please tell me and i'll post it elsewhere...

  • DBA Studio / Permissions question

Sorry to ask this here, but I couldn't figure out the relevant forum and this one looked busy.
I am trying to use DBA Studio to grant permissions on tables, etc. I can't seem to create a connection that has permissions to grant priviliges to objects not owned by the connection. For example, when connected to DBA studio with the SYSTEM account, I am not able to assign select for BDMS objects to the BDMS_ALL account.
Is there any way to grant priviliges to SYSTEM or any other account where I can assign security permissions to objects owned by another user? I am going to write a permissions management application and would greatly prefer not having to create multiple connections / logons to set permissions.

Though i could not understand u r problem properly, but i am sure that if u use the 'system' account with loged in as a 'sysdba' not a normal user, u could be able to give the previleges on any obkect to any user.

  • CMC Automating Reports Question

Greetings and thanks for taking the time to look this over,
I am looking to automate reports in CMC but cannot find a step-by-step guide to do this successfully. Can anyone provide me with directions? If not, here's the problem:
1: When I import a Crystal report and set it to schedule, with an output of PDF and make that schedule reoccurring - the report does not run. The only reoccurring report that is successfully running is one set to reoccur "now."
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

The version reported in the "about" area is: Product: 12.0 © 2007 Business Objects
I am attempting to schedule specific uploaded crystal reports to run on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. This would seem pretty self explanatory, but somehow it's not working. Here's what I do now:
1: Inside the "Automated Reports" folder, I've created subfolders for the various companies that we report for.
2: I've created various user names for each of those companies. For example: The "Blue Company" folder has a "Blue Company" user name.
3: I upload the Crystal Report in question into the "Blue Company" folder.
4: I go into "properties" for the report.
5: In "default settings", I schedule the recurrence for "Daily" with Days(N) = 1, and the start Date/Time with Today's date and the time at 2:00 AM, with an end date 10 years in the future.
6: I try "Scheduling For" either myself or the username created in step 2.
7: Format is changed to PDF.
8: Destination: Changed to Email. From is set from a company email address. To are other confirmed email addresses. Subject is something like "%SI_NAME%%SI_STARTTIME%" and the Specific Name of something like "%SI_NAME%%SI_STARTTIME%.%EXT%"
9: I then Save the report.
I don't see any other steps to take to force the report schedule to take. If I run these reports "now," they usually run fine, but the recurrence part just refuses to work.
Does this provide you with enough information?

  • Disk utility permissions question

    Hello,
I am VERY happy with my Mac. However, since installing OS10.5 (upgrade from my 10.4) whenever I used my Disk Utility to repair permissions, I get a HUGE list of repairs. Every time I used the Utility, it comes up with this huge list that, as far as I can tell, is all the same.
So my question is, is it actually repairing the permissions?
I've never had this happen on my previous OS. If something showed up, it repaired it and then, when I run the utility again, it shows that all is well and no repairs are necessary.
Can anyone help me? I have also been having problems with my Toast Titanium 10 and my MOTU Digital Performer 5 since my OS upgrade.
I took a screen shot of my Utility permissions after it's been run. I could send that to you if you would need to see it.
Thank you for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Restore and Permissions Questions

I'm wondering what my restore options are going alllow me to do. Let me elaborate on my situation and it might reveal why I am posting a new topic.
I bought my macbook pro used, and it came with ilife and mac office installed. I used time machine to back up this OSX partition. The macbook pro is working perfectly, but small ghosts from the previous owner are bothering me.
When I received the macbook pro, I changed the user name and password. I logged out and came back in as my newly created identity to find that my home folder in finder was still the previous user account. It had created a new home folder for the user I created, but the "default" home folder was still set to the previous user. Looking in User Accounts, that previous user name isnt listed, yet I noticed in Activity Monitor that all the applications are being launched as that previous user account.
Its these ghosts that make me want to reformat for my piece of mind. My question is can I use Time Machine to preserve the software like ilife and mac office onto my new installation? Furthermore, will time machine handle reassigning the permissions from the old file system to the new? Or am I stuck with this previous owner's info?

I'm not sure what's going on, but if there's no "macpro" in the NetInfo database, then you've already changed something around when you tried renaming the accounts. Not being able to "see" what's there makes it difficult for me to know how to proceed. I'm not confident that what I may suggest will be correct without looking into these accounts which I can't really do under the circumstances.
The only sure thing I can recommend is erasing the drive and starting over from scratch, but I don't know if that's feasible for you to do. If not, then you could reinstall OS X doing an Archive and Install which doesn't require erasing the drive:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Keychain Slash Permissions Question

    Hello;
I am learning about my Keychain application and I need help to understand what it is I am looking at.
I have Keychain open with the "Show Keychain" button activated, and I have activated both "Search for .Mac Certificates" and "Search Directory Services for Certificates" in the Keychain preferences, and both those icons are visible in my Keychain listings, but they (the locks) are both shadowed over and cannot be unlocked.
    Question:
Am I not supposed to have access to those 2 icons, such that they are supposed to be locked and shadowed over, or should I have the option to unlock those icons?
    And a broader question:
Are there any ownership permissions in a mac that the user/mac owner may never change/access/or alter the permissions to, or is every permission and/or ownership technically changeable or alterable by the mac (admin and/or root) user?
    Thanks,

    And if I may ask;
How might I get mac in a position where I have full access to all the privileges and ownerships?
I have reinstalled and erased and reinstalled more times than I can count and to no avail. When I reinstall OSX over my current installation, preserving the user settings, then going for a clean install, the install process always quits due to an error.
I downloaded that Clix Unix application and and ran the show firmware password script, this is what was revealed - ÄÅÄÏ
    show OF password
    echo -e `nvram -p | grep password | awk '{ print $2 }' | sed s/\%/'\\\x'/g`
    ÄÅÄÏ
How did it get there? I cannot say for sure, but I am on a family network and there was at least 1 windows machine that needed a serious cleansing.
But any who, I am unable to reinstall OSX such that ÄÅÄÏ and all its buddy code does not simply reappear after the reinstall.
Or rather, how do I go about removing ÄÅÄÏ from my computer?
And I should mention, the same ÄÅÄÏ is in both my macs. The second of which was ÄÅÄÏ-ed right after purchased new and hooked into my family network, which has also been examined by tech people and found to be clean and not compromised, leaving me to presume that whatever allowed ÄÅÄÏ into my macs was allowed there by someone much more technically advanced than most.
So I got ÄÅÄÏ in both my G5 and my new powerbook. How to I help my macs recover from severe trauma and victimization?

    Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”

ACL found but not expected on "Applications".

I verified my permissions on my internal disk with all my externals disconnected... this is what I got as a report. what does this mean and what should I do?
fresh install of Leopard and FCS2
also I still have Tiger and FCS1 (carbon copy cloned) on an external drive and it was hooked up to my iMac while I did the clean install of Leopard. now whenever I run FCP it will sometimes spin up the external and search for something even though I do not have it set for a scratch drive or anything.... what is going on? should all externals be disconnected while doing a fresh format and install of OS and Apps?
    thanks for all your help.

  • Discoverer Report Scheduling Permissions question

    Quick question,
i have a report which runs fine for all users, however when scheduled for certain users the report fails to return data. The report uses a folder with a call to the GL_SECURITY_PKG in the SQL. I have removed this and the report appears to run when scheduled, the above package gets the responsibility info from the FND_GLOBAL.RESP_ID function and checks it against the GL set up for security when viewing GL data.
I’m thinking that whatever runs the scheduled workbooks isn’t picking up the user and responsibility that scheduled the report? This is a hunch – can anyone explain more?
    Thanks

Edited by: SolHill on 01-Nov-2011 09:45

    Hi Sol
That is correct. The user and responsibility are only used during the session when the user is connected to the database.
Whenever a scheduled workbook is run in an APPS-mode environment the user running it will be APPS. This user is a database user and does not log in with a responsibility therefore the FND_GLOBAL.RESP_ID will not be set.
    Best wishes

  • Pre-purchase: Permissions Question

In looking through the product details and this forum I can't
find mention of how a user signs in to Contribute.
I have a client that would like to purchase one license and
have it used on one computer by multiple users in the same office,
probably with different levels of permissions.
Is this possible? How difficult will it be to control access?
    Thank you in advance...

I know it's possible if your company uses Active Directory.
Ours uses AD, you use your AD LAN username and password to log into
the computer, and then the same when opening Contribute. Because we
set up the Contribute roles to use Active Directory (with the CPS),
opening Contribute causes a prompt for username and password, so it
knows who's currently using the software and what restrictions/role
    to impose on that person.

  • Time Machine and drive permissions question

I'm using Time Machine on a MacBook with two admin accounts (let's call them admin1 and admin2). admin2 is the account used daily. admin1 is the account used very infrequently.
Things were set up with admin1. I noticed today when I was logged in as admin2 that TimeMachine reported that the last backup was more than 2 week ago (when things were set up), and that the last backup failed because the user didn't have privileges.
I did a Get Info on the drive, and it seemed to confirm that (admin 1 had read/write privileges, but admin 2 had only read access).
To get around the problem I logged in as admin1 and turned Time Machine off. I then logged in admin 2 and selected the disk from there, and turned Time Machine on.
My question is - is this normal behavior? Or if there's something wrong, how to fix it?
    Thanks...

After a few minutes, an external drive that is mounted on the desktop will spin down--like it should. But...each time a "Save" or "Save As..." dialog box is opened in any application, things will grind to halt for a few seconds while the external drive spins up--even though I will not be saving files to that drive. I've always hated that, which is one reason I've always done manual backups.
Does that happen with Time Machine (either with a drive physically or wirelessly connected via Export Extreme) and is there any way to avoid that?
It happens with TM. I am not sure of any convenient work-arounds. You can of course eject the drive and reattach it when you want to make a backup, but that's a bit inconvenient, IMO.
Is it possible to manually turn on and turn off Time Machine (and the external drive) so as to only do manual backups like I'm doing now? I don't really care about looking up a prior version of file that I've changed. I just want a reasonably current whole-disk backup.
Yes, TM has an on/off switch. Just turn it off until you want a backup. It will simply continue where it left off. It will not create a completely new backup.

  • Yay! More Disk Permissions questions!

Ok so I've searched and I know that the WARNING thing is apparently no big deal, according to Apple. My main problem is that I've repaired permissions at least 2-3 times and each time I verify afterwards to see if everthing is fixed and lo and behold, NOTHING was fixed.
    Every time I get this:
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Frame works/QuartzComposer.framework", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

ACL found but not expected on "Library/Application Support/Apple/iChat Icons/Tribal Masks".
Granted most of that seems to be iChat icons (what does ACL mean, anway?) but I'm just annoyed that no matter what I do the problem won't go away.
I'm "repairing" from the hard drive because when I try to do it from the install disc, the progress bar is just like the candy cane spiral thing, like it's just getting ready. And it sits there forever. I've let it sit for around 5 minutes and it still doesn't start so I gave up on the disc. If that's what I need to do, then I'll just wait, I guess.
BTW, this is on a brand new Macbook, 2.2 ghz.
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
ACL means Access Control List, see
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accesscontrollist
Permissions are checked and compared with a list of permissions to see if they match. If they don't, they are repaired.
So in the case of these informative messages, they say that they are not in the list, so there's no repairing available, in fact we don't even know if there should be.
Only Permission Repair you have is this:
    +Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Frame works/QuartzComposer.framework", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .+
Permissions always look like this one.
All the rest is informative message and nothing to worry about.
About repairing permissions with the system volume's DU: no problem, it doesn't matter.
What has to be done from the Mac OS X DVD (or from another Mac OS X volume) is the *Disk Repair*.
It won't let you anyway from the very one it's booted from.

  • Disk Permissions Question

Not sure if this is anything, but I often repair permissions after software installation. If I run the repair a second time, all the same items that were 'repaired' all become 'repaired' again. This is what is appears in my log file, but for numerous items:
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets/Stickies.wdgt/version.plist. New permissions are 33188
Is this anything or is this normal? Thanks for your input.

Those 5-number-permissions shown are status messages that these special permissions are in use. Just for-your-info-notifications, nothing was changed. Those special permissions come from system updates which added them.
The meaning of those permissions is described in english here:

  • Disk Utility Verify permissions question

I have always done, since 10.x, repair permissions via disk utility by opening disk utility app, selecting the top most icon:
    "drive manufacturer and size" name
    and then underneath: "Macintosh HD"
and then under that "my disc drive" name
I have always just selected the top most and hit repair.
Should I have been actually selecting "Macintosh HD" instead of the top one?

Should I have been actually selecting "Macintosh HD" instead of the top one?
In your case, it doesn't matter. The distinction is only relevant for drives which have two or more partitions.
