B&W G3 won't boot OSX Panther

I have rev2 B&W G3/450, 640 mb RAM, 2 video cards (ATI Rage128 and ATY RV100) each connected to a Sony TFT display, and 2 scsi cards. The computer has the newest firmware. ATA drive has OS 9.2 which works fine. I want to be able use Panther on that computer. The problem: it won't boot into OSX Panther, be it a scsi drive or install CD. I have installed (commercial black CDs) OSX on a G4 and the system works fine on that computer. It fails when using same hard disk as startup on G3: the system starts booting, shows gray apple logo (on display connected to ATY RV100), then after a long pause it displays the "nogo" sign (crossed circle). When booting from CD, it just runs the circle forever. I tried OSX installer CD as well as DiskWarrior CD with the same result. IS there any trick to get it booting into OSX? Theoretically, it should work.

@Thomas: good shot -- the problem is scsi related but not as simple as card compatibility
@Ali: as I said, firmware is uptodate. Rev2 has NewWold ROM so KB Article you refer to does not apply.
I spent a few hours fiddling with hardware, starting by installing the card I used in G4 to install OSX. It worked just fine in G3, so I rebuilt original configuration step by step. To make the story short, I have 2 SCSI drives and 1 ATA drive. If both SCSI drives are on the same bus, the boot hangs. If I put them on two different buses, OSX boots fine. At first glance it looks like SCSI ID conflict but it ain't -- each drive has a unique ID. Also, G3 boots fine into OS9 with both drives on the same bus. The OSX boot hangs also if I put a SCSI scanner on a bus with a hard drive, but works fine if I put it on another bus. No such problems under OS9. So, it seems that each SCSI bus can handle only one physical device under OSX.

Thanks for the target mode article. An earlier attempt to run the iBook G3/10.4 as a target disc resulted in the MacBook Pro not being able to recognize/see the G3's drive, which seems to confirm my suspicion that there is major corruption or disc failure on the iBook.
My needs now seem to center around data recovery (if possible) and then attempting to replace the iBook HD.
As regards data recovery/disc repair, have you used or had success with TechTool Pro 4? I have TechTool Deluxe as part of my MacBook AppleCare program and may decide to upgrade to the Pro version, if merited. The app should work with my G3, which runs OS 10.4 (but not 10.5).
Also, have you attempted a HD replacement on a G3? iFixit.com offers detailed instructions. While it seems do-able for a layperson like myself, it does involve a near complete disassembly of the case, shield, housing, etc.
Finally, and apropos of nothing, have you attempted to put 10.5 on your G3? My understanding is that 10.5 exceeds the G3 specs.

My 27" iMac (2009) won't boot OSX from the internal drive

Here's a fun problem. After installing Sophos anti-virus and starting a (VERY slow) full scan, a day or two later I found my iMac frozen at the screensaver. It was completely unresponsive so I did a hard reboot, at which point it got as far as starting to boot Lion (apple logo on screen, spinning indicator showing) before stalling indefinitely in that state with the indicator spinning.
I restarted and booted from the recovery partition, launched disk utility, and discovered that the SMART status of the drive was "failing". The machine would still boot from the recovery partition and my boot camp partition, but I assumed that the disk failing was why the OSX partition wouldn't boot (the recovery partition worked, as did the windows 7 bootcamp partition). I replaced the factory-installed internal HDD with another of the same make, model, and capacity (Seagate 1TB), and performed a restore from the Time Machine backup on my Drobo.
The result was the same as the original problem - it wouldn't boot, hung with the indicator spinning. Thinking that the Sophos scan was somehow responsible (in-progress when the last TM backup was made) I tried restoring to a backup a few days older, (to the best of my recall from BEFORE I downloaded Sophos) only to have the same result.
Anyone have any ideas? I made a clean install of Lion (using the recovery partition on my old internal HDD, now connected externally via USB) to an external drive while I was waiting for the replacement hard disk to arrive, and it boots fine from that. I haven't tried a clean install to the internal HDD yet, as I'd obviously prefer to recover my installed apps as they were before, that being the point of a Time Machine backup, right?

You have a serious drive issue that likely can't be repaired that way.

If you have your data off the machine, to a storage drive (or earlier with TM)
then hold command r keys and use Disk Utility to Erase the Lion Partiton with Zero option, and reinstall Lion from Apple's servers.

Macbook Pro won't boot OSX after Yosemite upgrade 10.10.3

I downloaded the update to 10.10.3 this morning before driving my daughter to daycare. When I came back, my Macbook Pro had rebooted into Windows 7 (Boot Camp). I restarted it by telling it to reboot to OSX, but it boots Windows again. If I turn it off completely, and then turn it on again, there's no chime... just a black screen for about 30 seconds, followed by "Starting Windows". I'm about to reboot to try resetting NVRAM and SMC, but I don't know if that's going to work without the chime...
I really need OSX to get going, so any help appreciated.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

MacBook Pro mid 2009 won't boot OSX

Since today i have a strange problem booting into Mac. This is how it started out:
I was inside of Mac, and decided to reboot to Windows, to play a match of MW2. I forgot to use the ALT button, so Mac was already booting. I used the on/off switch to turn it off before i started it again. This time i did use the ALT button, and i booted into Windows. I decided later on to boot back to OSX, and it didn't give me any problems.
I wanted to mount a DVD ISO file to watch, and when i mounted it my user account got logged off. I logged back in and tried it again, same problem.
I decided to reboot the system, but this time something wierd happend. Along with the Apple logo i got a grey progress bar, wich went till about 25%. After this bar dissapeared it was just the Apple logo with the rotating gear, and it didn't go any further.
I tried using the installdisk to repair my OSX partition, but whenever i try to repair i get the following:
Repairing volume completed.
Updating startup support partitions where necessary.
Error: Diskaid cannot repair this disk
(original messages were in dutch, so in translated it. Could be different from the english messages)
Diskaid also shows my OSX partition as grey, instead of the normal black. I can't seem to be able to activate tis volume in Diskaid
After this i tried running Apple Hardware Test, and it didn't give me any errors.
The strange thing is that Windows(bootcamp ofcourse) runs fine. It's Mac OSX that cannot boot.
I don't have backups, and no Time Machine either. Is there a way to get my OSX back up again without having to reinstall everything? Especially because of certain installed Audio Units. I don't have the original license codes anymore of same AU's, so it would be a real pain if i need to reinstall this again.

I have bought 2 late 2012 21.5 iMacs last year and have used both the same way. Here is what happened with one of them recently.
Fisrt af all I've installed bootcamp 1 year ago in both iMacs without issues and was ok so far, and was using exclusively Windows 7 partition. The trouble iMac started with some startup issues during boot/reboot (screen was frozen with green/grey horizontal lines), but worked fine after following manual start up.
Lately I've been trying to boot from OsX partition and it freezes in the apple logo every time.
I have already done the SMC / PRAM procedures, without success.
I have tried to download and do a fresh OsX install (Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite). Can't boot from Mavericks / Yosemite flash drive install (both freeze at apple logo - horizontal lines), and only had partial success with one Mountain Lion 10.8.5 flash drive install that booted all right and the first part of the installation process was ok, but after the initial reboot, it happened to freeze the same way before.
The iMac failed to boot in safe mode (stops booting at 25% and then freezes on apple logo), and show no issues with AHT tests.
I can boot in single user mode, but it reboots after a few seconds. I noticed some errors messages during this boot.
It fails to boot in verbose mode, showing a few lines of errors (images attached), and then freezes in a green horizontal line screen.
I can still boot from Bootcamp flash drive and Ubuntu Flash drive, and install both OS. The only issue is with OsX itself. I have used Gparted in Ubuntu to Format the hole partition to HFS+, and can't find any errors in hard drive tests.
I thought about buying a thunderbolt cable and try to do a Clone of my other iMac, but don't know if it will work.
Any other tests/suggestions about this issue?

Of course this means i just lost 4GB.
Let me tell the full story.
In the beginning, long ago, once upon a time. My iMac had 2x2GB ram sticks which were in the two DIMM1 Banks. I then told myself "I WANT MORE RAM BECAUSE LOLZ". So i bought 2x4GB ram sticks. The two empty slots were Bank 0/DIMM0 and Bank 1/DIMM 0. and I added them in there. having done that, I booted OS X up, worked great, had 12GB, everything was shiny and beautiful. Soon after I wanted to try it out on windows. I restarted my computer and BAM the blinking cursor just sits there, being stubborn and all. I then told myself "holy balls, this new ram i got is bonkers" (them words, I blame the language filter). Then after giving it a little thought, i just asked myself if it was because I had ram from two different manufacturers. I removed my old ram, which has nice Samsung stickers on them, and booted it up on windows. Still had the same problem, I then decided that maybe this is all really mentally challenged so to win I had to think like a retard. I took my new ram and inserted it in the same slots where my old ram sticks were (DIMM1 Banks), booted windows up and IT WORKED.
I still hold all of my WHYs on this subject but I will keep messing around to see if I find a better solution than just leaving both DIMM0 banks empty

Main drive won't boot reliably

If I have a duplicated ( via SuperDuper) external drive attached, the OS will boot from that drive, even if I have my main drive selected in prefs as the startup drive.
If I disconnect the external drive, my mac will boot from DiskWarrior DVD, in the Superdrive.
If I remove the disk, my drive gets me a flashing question mark.
I have DiskWarriored and TechTooled and they pass the drive, yet all the above indicate that all is not well with my main drive.
Yet in each case, if I start with 'Option' key pressed, my main drive appears in the list and will then boot happily and will run all day.
Any ideas as to why the drive won't boot OSX straight away?

good job on having firewire ports, you can run tiger.
to upgrade the firmware, you need to install a harddrive that has OS 9 on it. doesn't matter if the drive is in that computer at the moment, it can be a friends that has it installed already. you just need a installation of OS 9. Connect it to the internet after its booted, run the software update, it'll reboot some times and some junk and do it for you. Be nice and give the hard drive back to whoever was nice enough to lend it to you. They are SUPER easy to swap.
My impression of your hard drive is that it is failing its SMART crap. The problem with these things is that the heat they live with (cause of the proc and the crt in there, not to mention the psu) make them "stretch" as they work. you "can" dent the little disc/circle lookin part on the top of the hard drive with a hammer very lightly and sort of "force" it back in to a more optimal position for old age. Since i saw you just ordered a new hard drive from ebay (newegg would have been more trustworthy, ata 100 backwards compatability for the win), when you get that, put it in and come up with an OS 9 install disc. Gotta be one for your computer or a retail, which did or does come with tiger when you buy it.
I installed OS X Tiger on my iMac G3 400dv without doing the firmware update first and i updated it to the current version, did it break my monitor? nope. BUT, it says it can, so i'd install OS 9 first and do the firmware update like a good person would. I have since installed OS 9 and fixed the error on my part and reinstalled Tiger.

Beige G3 Won't Boot After Installing Xpostfacto & Panther

I successfully installed OSX panther on a powermac G3 233mhz. While installing Norton utilities, it locked up. Now I can't get it to boot on anything.
I've removed all cards, tried swapping ram, replaced the battery, zapped the pram, hit the reset, it will not start up off any cd, tried starting up with shift, option, shift-option-command-delete, nothing seems to work. I even unplugged the drive, and put in another drive and it won't start up on anything. The farthest it will go is the gray OSX screen with the apple and then I get a no symbol.
If I hold down the option key, I will get a gray screen with a OS9 happy mac face, then it restarts over and over.
If I hold down the command-V I can get into the verbose mode, where I do not see any errors, but get the "Still waiting for root device" and then no matter what cd or tape I put in, nothing.
Anyone have any suggestions? The machine was working fine before I installed the xpostfacto.

My first thought is that Norton has a history of not playing nice with the Beige.
Also, which version of XPostFacto did you install? Version 4 on the Beige is best for Tiger only. If you go to the download page, and scroll WAY down to the bottom section showing Version History, you'll see version 3.1. That's the version to use when installing Panther. Ok, now, to get you started up in anything. I'm assuming you have OS9.2.2 installed?
Panther needs to be installed on a drive or partition of less than 8 GB. If your drive is larger than that, you'll need to partition it, with the first partition set at 7.9 GB. That's where Panther needs to be.
Please post back with info on what your Beige contains -- PCI cards (USB? Firewire? Video?). When installing you should have nothing connected to any Firewire ports.
Also, try inserting an OS9 install CD and restart, but do NOT press any keys, not even the C key. Sometimes this will get the Beige to boot from the CD (don't ask me why, but it works for me and others).
Also, what kind of Panther install CDs were you using? If they were grey, and not the white ones with big Black/Silver X on them, they are not full retail install CDs and may not properly install Panther on your Beige. The grey CDs are machine-specific. You'll need full retail install CDs to be sure to have a correct install.
Please post back and tell us the specs on your Beige and how it's going. Fear not, I'm sure we'll be able to get you up and running again!

Reset PMU and Powerbook won't boot past the blue screen with "Mac OSX" box

Hi-
Problem: I tried to reset my PMU, and now when my computer restarts it won't go past the blue screen with the "Mac OSX" logo in the box (and progress bar, that never fills up). I then also tried to reset PRAM, but it still won't boot properly.
Backstory--
I've had my 12-inch Powerbook G4 for about 3.5 years already, so things are starting to get a bit out of whack. I replaced my battery about 3 months ago, which has been great, but recently my power-cord has been wonky (having to unplug it and replug it in to make sure it actually charges the computer, the light flickers on and off, etc). Today it actually started producing SPARKS at the place where the thin white wire meets the white plastic power brick, so I decided it was time to get a new one. Brought it home, plugged it in, and since it seemed like the battery indication icon on the menu bar was all out of sync with the powercord colored-light, I tried restarting it a few times, but still the same. Then, I decided to reset the PMU, which may have been a huge mistake. And now it won't boot past the blue screen... Any advice? I'm going to try restarting it in "safe" mode, but I'd be so grateful for any recommendations. Hope I haven't done something irreversibly stupid with the PMU reset.

Thanks for all of your great suggestions and info-- here are a few responses.
1) The disk I just borrowed from my friend appears to be the full retail version-- it looks just like the links that Ali B sent, and is in a large box saying "Mac OSX Tiger, version 10.4"... will this be the proper disk to do an Erase and Install? The only other disks I have came with my Powerbook when it was originally purchased, when it came Panther (I think, 10.3?). Would I use both sets of these disks to do erase and install? Or only the Tiger OSX disks?
2) I get the sense that Disk Warrior or Tech Tool might be necessary, but does it make sense to TRY to do erase-install before buying them? Also, are there any downloadable (for pay) versions of this, or would I need to track down the actual physical disks in Hong Kong or wait for them to be shipped?
3) I haven't yet tried the S.M.A.R.T. test, should I do that first? What is the procedure? Are there any results or ways to know if the drive is too far gone (so that I might instead replace the internal hard-drive) instead of pay 100 USD first to do the disk repair?

MacPro, OSX 10.7.4 Safari 5.1.7 won't boot keeps crashing. How do I install another version? It won't let me.

In my Applications folder, I have Safari 5.1.6. When I try the manual install of of 5.1.7 it won't let me because it says I have a "newer" version of Safari already installed! ???
I tried reinstalling OSX 10.7.4, but still have the same problem. You can't throw it out or replace it either, or restore from Time Machine.

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying. If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:

This is called a kernel panic, similar to s 'blue screen of death' on Windows. When you say you reinstalled 3 times, do you mean the OS or the Update?
When does this kernel panic appear? You may have a hardware issue if it's happening on boot.

Mac won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4

I am on my 3rd Mac that won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4. One MacBook Pro and two iMacs. I fixed one but the last two are getting the better of me. HD is not fried. Have tried every keyboard shortcut on startup, Disk Warrior via. Target Disk, repairing permissions in single user mode. The machines will not boot off of a CD or DVD and it will not boot up in safe mode. Something in the startup files is preventing startup. I am suspecting Sophos antivirus. I tried to uninstall it and trash it but I think it's still blocking something. Any help would be appreciated.

Got it! Not sure if removing Sophos had anything to do with it but here's what I did.
1) boot dead machine in Target Disk Mode (iMac)
2) boot good machine off Snow Leopard disk (MacBook)
3) install OS to dead machine- I found this next part very curious. When the install was complete the MacBook restarted as the iMac.
4) ran software updates
5) shut down MacBook then shut down iMac
6) rebooted iMac- all was good
I actually did this twice because a co-worker had the exact same problem on her MacBook Pro. Got both fixed today.

IMac won't boot to OS 9, boots Panther fine

Bought an iMac G3/500/128MB/CD-RW off Ebay for super cheap (this is the Indigo 500 with 64MB base RAM). Loaded OS 10.3.3 with no probs, tested it out with no probs. (I know the 128MB RAM is less than recommended/required for Panther, the machine was supposed to have 256MB and the seller is sending that to me). Next step was to load OS 9.1 from the CD. The iMac won't boot from the OS 9.1 CD (It boots fine from the Panther CD). Also tried booting from a firewire CD drive, same result. The result is a folder with a question mark, then a folder with a smily face, repeated twice before it aborts the OS 9 boot and goes into Panther.
Repaired permissions, no luck, wiped Panther off the drive and tried booting to OS 9 with blank drive, and still no luck.
As stated above, the machine was supposed to have 256MB RAM, and it also has a 20GB HD when it was supposed to have a 30GB HD. I declined a new HD as the seller offered me $20 as an option (bringing the total shipped down to $69.00), but now I'm wondering if I should replace the HD with the 30GB he offered? I don't think it's an HD issue though and replacing it looks like more trouble than it's worth.
I'm not too bummed if I have to stick to Panther, I just have a few OS 9 apps that I'd like to have access to.

Does the CD drive boot from the Panther installation disk? I'm wondering if the CD drive is faulty, and it's not a Mac OS 9 specific issue.
Also, in combination with that problem, the hard drive may have been partitioned without the Mac OS 9 drivers. If you haven't tried already, use Disk Utility to partition the drive. You can keep it at one partition, but be sure that the "Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed" check box is installed. [NOTE: partitioning will wipe the drive clean.]
Other than that, I don't have a clue...
If you can't boot directly from Mac OS 9, most "classic" apps will run fine under Mac OS X in the "Classic" environment. If that works, it's actually a better way to access to Mac OS 9 programs.

IBook G4 suddenly won't boot past the "booting OSX" screen.

My iBook G4 suddenly died and now won't boot past the "Starting OSX" screen. The blue bar goes all the way across but never moves to the next screen. I have my original disks, containing OS 10.4.5. I am trying to boot from the disk, but just keep getting the Installer program. When I try to choose a startup disk, it still won't start. Any help or ideas? This is urgent.
BTW, I am a photographer and was workig in PhotoShop7 -- a program I use all day, every day.

Start from the install disc again and choose Disk Utility from the menu. Highlight the drive on the left and click Repair Disk. If it reports errors and repairs made, repeat the process until no errors are reported.
